ENGLISH LANGUAGE & ENGLISH LITERATURE

What will you study?

All students will study for GCSEs in both English Language and English Literature, building on the knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 3.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Course outline

Students use and develop skills across units including:  Learning to read texts actively and critically  Making inferences and giving informed comments on language in use  Producing texts that are fit for purpose and audience  Comparing non-fiction texts

ENGLISH LITERATURE: Course outline

 Students respond thoughtfully and critically to literary texts – novels, extracts, plays and poems. Our set texts are Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein, Macbeth and Power and Conflict Poetry  Students explore and compare themes and ideas through literary texts

AQA 8700 (Language) and 8702 (Literature)

How will you be assessed?

ENGLISH LANGUAGE:

This course has two exams.  Unit 1 – Exam: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50%)  Unit 2 – Exam: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives (50%)  Unit 3 – Non examined: Spoken Language (formal presentation)

ENGLISH LITERATURE:

The course has two exams; these are closed book exams.  Unit 1 – Exam: Shakespeare and the 19th Century Novel (40%)  Unit 2 – Exam: Modern Texts and Poetry (60%)
