Rosenwald School Celebrating a Century of Promoting
Racial and Educational Equality by Richard Carchman and Mary Turner-Day
I
n the western part of Goochland County, sits a small white, two-room structure known as Second Union School (later incorporated as Second Union Rosenwald School (SURS)). The school was built in 1918 to educate rural, Black students in grades one through seven who were excluded from the same educational opportunities as White students in Virginia. The story of this little schoolhouse offers an account of the history of the United States and represents one stepping-stone that was put in place earlier by others who preceded its construction. Though Second Union School was facilitated by Julius Rosenwald, it was the local citizens who supplied the majority of the funds and labor for its construction. It

is a story that continues today, as the little schoolhouse has been transformed into a museum designed to highlight the history of African American education in Goochland County. This museum does not simply preserve the past, but also illuminates the efforts and struggles of the dedicated individuals who embraced the aspirational thoughts and documents of those who laid the foundation for educational equality. The undertaking continues as our country remains “a work in progress.” Progress is what this school’s story and other such schools speak to, both educational and racial. This year, on October 6th and 7th, the museum will celebrate the 100th Year Anniversary of SURS. The celebration begins Saturday at the School with food, drink, music, and games. The following day, a banquet at the Central High Cultural and Educational Complex will feature Kenneth B. Morris, Jr. as guest speaker. Morris is a prominent and well-recognized authority on the history of Black struggles in the United States. His family background is quite impressive with both Fredrick Douglass and Booker T. Washington as part of his lineage. Morris is the founder of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI). Second Union Rosenwald School has many friends and supporters whose roles will be noted in the celebration, which will feature former attendees and graduates of this and other Rosenwald schools. A fascinating aspect of the story is the remarkable friendship that existed between Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington. Rosenwald was one of the richest men in the United States and a prominent philanthropist. Washington, who played a pivotal role in creating the Tuskegee Institute, is well known as one of the most influential Black leaders in promoting Black education and welfare. Their mutual interest in providing education for Blacks in the south resulted in the building of over 5,000 African American schools. Washington, born into slavery, powerfully demonstrated what a person can achieve not only for themselves but for the greater good. The message of the October celebration is that “good people can come together to serve a higher purpose that enhances the lives of others who otherwise would have been denied the opportunities for happiness and success.” The Second Union Rosenwald School Museum is located at 2843 Hadensville-Fife Road in Goochland. Cameron Mackintosh presents the new production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables, direct from an acclaimed two-and-a-half-year return to Broadway. With its glorious new staging and dazzlingly reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, this breathtaking new production has left both audiences and critics awestruck, cheering, “Les Miz is born again!” Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.
