BERKELEY PLANTATION A Destination for Local Tourists By Averill P. Byrd

o many locals make the mistake of never visiting historic landmarks in their hometowns. But sometimes, you stumble upon a gem – a place that surprises you and offers a unique glimpse into the long and complex history of a place, and even of the country, that you just can’t pass up the opportunity. One such place is Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, just 40 minutes outside of Richmond. It has been described by guests as “a hidden treasure,” a place where history “comes alive.” The magnificently restored property sits on the bank of the James River, with a three-story mansion and sprawling grounds and gardens. Here, you step back in time as tour guides in period costumes welcome you to the estate. They take you through the historic events that took place in this space — from the first official Thanksgiving and the birth of a man who would be among those who signed the Declaration of Independence to the occupation by Union troops during the Civil War, the composition of “Taps” and Berkeley’s own winding journey to its restoration. had served as a drummer boy in the Union army and had once encamped at Berkeley. Decades later, he chanced upon the notice of sale and purchased the property with the vision of someday restoring it. This landmark boasts of a deep connection not only to Virginia’s past, but also to its present community and future development. On its website, Powhatan County provides an itenary for an informative tour. The following article, which details the stops along the way, was first published in the Powhatan Shopper in March, 2015.

A Three-Hour Tour Back in Time by Steve Cook

hether you’re new to the county or a lifelong resident, chances are there are many historical sites, and other attractions with which you are not familiar. On its website, the county provides the details for an informative and enjoyable three-hour driving

tour. Of course, it’s your tour and your car, so you can feel free to start and stop wherever you wish. However, if you follow the county’s suggested tour and take a somewhat leisurely approach, you should be able to take in the sights and the history within about three to four hours. You can find the tour and map at PowhatanVA.gov — search for “driving”. In keeping with the route provided online, the tour starts at Powhatan Courthouse Village, centered at 3880 Old Buckingham Rd. Since this is somewhat centrally located, no matter where in the country you might live, this a good place to begin your tour. The courthouse, completed in 1849, was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, who was viewed by many as America’s greatest architect of the mid-19th century. The building features Greek Revival style architecture. Behind the courthouse sits the old jail, which now houses the county’s historical society and features a small museum. The Powhatan County Historical Society is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Just a short ways from the Village, you’ll find stop number three on the tour — Nichol’s Store. As you approach, you may feel you’re driving on to the set of a Western movie. The old store served the community from 1920 until 1996. Currently, the site is used for antiques auctions. If you have never been to this somewhat off-the-beaten-path site, you’re in for somewhat of a surprise. Stop number five take you even further back in time. French’s Tavern (6100 Old Buckingham Rd.) was built between 1730 and 1734. Thomas Jefferson once owned this property. It was named for Hugh French, who operated a tavern here for 28 years. The tavern is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is now a private residence. Several other stops on the driving tour are also on the National Register of Historic Places, including Mosby Tavern, Bellmead Mansion, and Provost, and it would surely enhance your enjoyment of the tour if you did a bit of research prior to starting the drive. For instance, did you know that one of the spots was once a world-class spa, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy the healing waters of a sulfur spring? Or that another stop on the tour is deemed the spot where, after the Civil War, Robert E. Lee wrote letters urging Southerners to put the past behind them and to work towards reunification of the nation? There’s so much history to see throughout the county. Now would be the perfect time to get the family together, hop in the car and discover Powhatan.

Ground black pepper 1 dash Ground white pepper 6 (1 oz. each) Mini whole-wheat rolls (small dinner roll size) Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 1 hour 20 minutes Makes six sliders 1 slider provides 2 oz. equivalent meat/meat alternate, and 1 oz. equivalent grains.

1.) Preheat oven to 350 °F.

2.) Combine brown rice and ½ cup water in a small pot and bring to a boil. Turn heat down to low. Cover and cook until water is absorbed, about 30-40 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Cover and refrigerate until completely cooled. A rice cooker may be used with the same quantity of brown rice and water. 3.) Heat canola oil in a small skillet. Add onions, celery,and garlic. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat. Cover and refrigerate until completely cooled. 4.) In a medium mixing bowl, combine turkey, egg, cranberries, spinach, Worcestershire sauce, salt, peppers, brown rice, and sautéed vegetables. Mix well. Shape into 6 patties. 5.) Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Place patties evenly spaced on baking sheet. 6.) Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes at 350 °F to an internal temperature of 165 °F or higher for at least 15 seconds (use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature). Do not overcook. Remove from oven and serve on a mini whole-wheat roll. Serve immediately. 7.) Serving suggestion: Serve with onion, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, and mustard.
