WWW.GARLANDJOURNAL.COM #LOGOUTFACEBOOK, TUESDAY DEC. 18, 2018 Facebook needs to do better. If the revelations over the past few weeks about Facebook hiring an opposition research firm and working with other deeply partisan strategy firms were not problematic enough, we learned just yesterday that Russian operatives used Facebook and the Facebook-owned Instagram to specifically target African Americans during the 2016 election. It’s time for Facebook to be held accountable. The NAACP is stepping up to take on this challenge, and we’re calling on all of our supporters to join us. We’re asking supporters to log out of Facebook and Instagram in protest today to let Facebook know that the data and privacy of its users of color matter!

MY TRUTH By Cheryl Smith Publisher

IF ONLY I KNEW

Wouldn’t life be so much easier if you could take everything you know by the age of let’s say 40, and go back in time and apply to the beginning of your life? Well that’s just not the way it is. We live and learn and keep it moving. It’s amazing how smart we thought we were until we get older and realize that we really were clueless and sometimes reckless. Well for those who “get it” we have to share the knowledge. We have to equip others and help them to realize some things we wish someone had told us. Which brings me to my truth. I was laying in a hospital bed. Alayna was 13 (going on 30), Annya was 7 (going on 20) and Ayanna was living life like it was golden at 4. My mother was holding my hand and talking about how she had gone through the same ordeal as I had, dealing with those abominable fibroid tumors. I asked her why she didn’t tell me. Gosh if I had known about them painful, uncomfortable and life threatening critters, I think I would have tried to beat them at their own game. See, when I went to Dr. Bill Glaze and was diagnosed with the tumors; I opted to participate in a study at UT Southwestern, to shrink the tumors. As part of the study, I couldn’t indulge in hormone-induced meats, dairy products or caffeine. Bulletin They aren’t good for you. I learned that although Mother had fibroids did not mean that I would have them. I was told you don’t inherit fibroid tumors, but if you have the same diet as others who have them, you are likely to also! If only I knew what I know now, I’d eat better, exercise more and avoid stress. One time I wrote a story about a young man who after the second attempt, was successful in committing suicide. His relatives said he kept telling them that he was going to kill himself, but they didn’t believe him; even after the first attempt. I don’t know what the young man was going through and I don’t know what goes through the mind of someone who takes another’s life. I feel they don’t value their lives or just can’t seem to get to the top of the mountain to see hope on the other side. If only I knew what I know now, when times were tough for me, I would get professional help, meditate and also probably take up yoga. Luckily for me, when in college I lived a very simple life. No credit cards or overindulging. It was amazing what I could whip up with a few dollars. My sorority sisters and friends loved my baked beans and tuna/mac salad! If only I knew what I know now, I probably would have invested the extra money I got from either work study or student loans. There were some things I didn’t need. I remember crying to my mother that I wanted a “perm” like the other girls at school. She said no. I begged. She finally said yes, and the woman who would eventually become my stepmother put the perm in my hair. If only I knew what I know now, I would have listened to my mother and went and read a book or something. The last thing I needed was those chemicals seeping into my body! When I bought my first home, I was so excited. The street reminded me of New Jersey streets, lined with trees. Andre, Alayna and Annya were happy too; while Ayanna was enjoying her first year on this earth. If only I knew what I know now, there are so many things I could have done, to pay the house off early, to See MY TRUTH, page 6

Michelle Obama visits Winspear Former First Lady surprises students at Inaugural Young Women’s Leadership Conference

Former First Lady Michelle Obama at Young Women's Leadership Conference

Former First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House to welcome students and help kick off the first annual Young Women’s Leadership Conference: Leadership Lessons Learned through the Arts. The program, produced by the nonprofit AT&T Performing Arts Center, included 150 young women from nine North Texas high schools and organizations who - thanks to donors and underwriting - participated free of charge. Mrs. Obama spoke briefly to the full group. She also spent time with a small group of students during one of the conference’s breakout sessions, moderated by business executive Matrice Ellis-Kirk, Chair of the Center’s Board of Directors. The girls had all received a signed copy of Mrs.

Obama’s new memoir Becoming and are attending her engagement at the American Airlines Center that evening. Mrs. Obama previously visited the Winspear Opera House in March for “A Conversation with Former First Lady Michelle Obama” as part of #hearhere, the Center’s popular speaker series. “These young women have been studying Mrs. Obama’s book in advance of the conference but did not know she would show up here in person, so you can imagine the excitement,” said Debbie Storey, interim president and CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. “This conference leverages the arts to build creativity, improve educational outcomes and develop strong leaders. Having Mrs. Obama share her lessons on leadership was really one of the high-

lights of the day!” The day-long program included a Women in Leadership Panel which featured Pat Smith, Founder & CEO of Pat Smith Enterprises; Matrice El-

lis-Kirk, Dallas Managing Director of RSR Partners and Chair of the Center’s Board of Directors; Denise Lee, See OBAMA, page 3

We Shall Protect Your Healthcare

From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The latest attack on vulnerable Americans who need assistance to ensure that they, and their families, have adequate and affordable health insurance comes not from the United States Congress, where the law providing such insurance was challenged more than sixty times by the Republican Party. This time it comes from a federal judge in North Texas who ruled recently that the law was unconstitutional. Fortunately, the judge’s ruling will be appealed to a higher court where I hope and pray more prudent thinking will prevail. If the

judge’s ruling stands, more than 20 million men, women and children will find themselves without health insurance, which should be considered a fundamental right in our country. As soon as I received notice of the judge’s ruling, I was in contact with my colleagues in Washington, members of the Democratic Party, who will make up the majority in the House of Representatives that will be seated during the first week of January. One of the reasons that our party experienced such an overwhelming victory in the November congressional elections is we

made healthcare a major issue, telling voters that we would protect the Affordable Care Act, and make Improvements to it. The local judge’s ruling comes in the face of a decision by the United States Supreme Court that the law, signed by President Obama in 2010, was constitutional and national polls showing that the favorability of the Affordable Care Act continues to rise. Even Republicans legislators promised voters that they supported the law during the election. A poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that more than 70 percent of Americans, Democrats and Republicans, have a favorable opinion of the Affordable Care Act, demonstrating that the legislation had become a significant part of the American

fabric. The Affordable Care Act also allows for Medicaid expansion, providing additional people with healthcare. The holiday season can be a very stressful time for everyone. Those secure with the knowledge of having healthcare because of the Affordable Care Act do not deserve the extra worry that the judge’s ruling has created. I want each of you to know that my colleagues and I are with you, and we will do everything in our

power to protect your healthcare. We are consulting with some of the best legal minds in the country who will argue in the next judicial forum or forums on your behalf, and on behalf of equity and fair-

ness. Having you and those you love without healthcare insurance is like leaving a newly-born infant alone in the midst of a harsh winter storm. We will not allow that. We shall assist you. We shall protect you from the cold! Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’s 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. Serving as a representative since 1993, when she was the first registered nurse elected to Congress.

First Lady Obama returns to Winspear continued from front page award-winning actress and singer; and was moderated by Debbie Storey, Interim President and CEO of AT&T Performing Arts Center. The young women also participated in three breakout sessions, including Leadership Lessons Learned through Improvisation with Amanda Austin; The Art of Storytelling with actress Liz Mikel; and Effective Communication through the Voice and Body with Jenni Steck. Participating schools and student groups include David W. Carter High School; The Hockaday School; Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School; L.G. Pinkston High School; Ursuline Academy of Dallas; Qalam Academy; Young Women’s Leadership Academy at Bill Arnold Grand Prairie; Young Women’s Leadership Academy Fort Worth; and The Links, Inc. The conference was made possible by the generosity of underwriters Fossil Group, Lyda Hill and Lynn Mc-

Bee. Additional support was provided by Vicki Blanton, Debra Hunter Johnson, Jill B. Louis, Mark Malveux, Lisa Montgomery and Regina Montoya. The annual conference is now the newest of the Center’s education and community engagement initiatives, which include Open Stages, where students visit the Center for shows and educational experiences; Backstage Spotlight, where students learn technical theatre skills and build a professional portfolio; Community Partners, which provides free tickets to underserved individuals and families; Disney Musicals in Schools, where Dallas ISD elementary schools produce a Disney musical; and ArtsBridge – Powered by Toyota, which connects West Dallas residents with cultural experiences both within their community and at the Center. All of this is made possible by generous donors and sponsors.

Trump voters must reapply

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall “Someday at Christmas there’ll be no wars. When we have learned what Christmas is for. When we have found what life’s really worth. There’ll be peace on earth. Stevie Wonder – Thanksgiving 1967 At 17 years and 5 months of age, Stevland Hardaway Judkins’ rushed his first Christmas album to press. “Someday at Christmas debuted on November 27, 1967, but it’s been a standard ever since. It means more to me this year than ever before. The album title and track unpacked Stevie’s wish list for a world he couldn’t see,

but could feel. The wishes he posited are still wanting and errant, but no less profound and admirable. Unfortunately, that “Somedayâ€? is not today, and we’re nowhere close. This Christmas we still have wars. Babies are being maimed, murdered and displaced in Yemen; and America is complicit in the mĂŠlange of inhumane maladies. Russia’s Premier and Donald Trump’s pimp, Vladimir Putin, has never heard Stevie. Putin is “doing the foolâ€? in the Middle East while he has cover at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The Russians have one foot in Ukraine and the other toe is testing the waters near Caracas. Two nuclear-capable Tu-160’s have been dispatched and signal the commencement of a new Cold War. God save us from an allout conflict. We have a commander-in-chief who uses troop movement as political diversion. Someday at Christmas

we may glean what life is worth, but this Christmas won’t be the one. Professor Eddie Glaude Jr. of Princeton penned a book that pronounces the devaluation of Black bodies. In ‘Democracy in Black; How Race Still enslaves the American Soul,â€? Glaude reminds us how far we have to go. “We talk about the achievement gap, we talk about the empathy gap, we talk about the wealth gap, and the value gap is this: the belief that white people matter more than others. And to the extent to which that belief animates our social arrangements, our political practices, our economic realities‌democracy will always be in abeyance in this

country. This Christmas Glaude’s racial caveat reads like international prophecy. Whites around the world feel pressured and follow “populist leaders. Just consult with Merkel, May and Macron. By the way, that’s not a law firm; they are the bewildered heads of state in Germany, The United Kingdom and France. Collectively, their greatest common challenge is convincing their White citizenry that the world is browning and separatism is not an option. There is no safe exit from Brexit and Trump’s Nationalism is toxic to the stock market, international trade and to the cause of worldwide diplomacy. Someday at Christmas there will be no terrorists; for-

Tragedies like the carnage at Parkland High School in Florida, the execution of Jewish worshippers in Central Ohio and the Nashville Waffle House shootings, prove that our fears are wrongheaded. Chris Rock is the master of converting social commentary into laughter, but one of them has been more true that funny. “I’m not worried about Al Qaeda; I’m worried about Al Cracker. America trains us to fear brown men with turbans, but White men with fully-loaded turbines are the more likely problem. According to Business Insider, America had 307 mass murders by mid-November, mostly committed by “lone wolves toting high-powered rifles while being burdened with low self-esteem. More than 12,000 dead and twice that number were injured. Someday? Meanwhile Trump; bent

Nancy WIlson the Classy Lady By Congresswoman Maxine Waters Congress Speaks By Rep. Maxine Waters

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued a statement on the death of legendary “song stylist, Nancy Sue Wilson, who died at age 81. “I am heartbroken by the passing of my beloved friend, the legendary Nancy Wilson. Nancy was a ‘song stylist’ without peer. Her unmatched mastery of numerous genres of music, including jazz, R&B, gospel, blues, soul and pop, has etched her name in history as

one of the most ‘formidable’ vocalists of all time. “Nancy began singing in church at the age of four in her home town of Chillicothe, Ohio. For more than five decades, she captivated audiences across the globe with her soul-stirring performances that would send chills down your spine; her more than 70 critically acclaimed albums, many of which I own; and her chart-topping hits such as ‘Guess Who I Saw Today,’ ‘Save Your Love for Me,’ and ‘Face It Girl, It’s Over,’ which are considered classics by generations of musicians and fans around the world. “Nancy is also a pioneer and trailblazer for women and entertainers of color. She hosted the National Public Radio program ‘Jazz Profiles’ for nearly a decade, won an Emmy for her starring role in NBC’s ‘The Nancy Wilson

Show’, and served as one of the first African American spokeswomen for major national brands, including Campbell’s Soup. “Due to her brilliant talent, poise, and grace, Nancy was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including, three Nancy Wilson Performing in Amsterdam, March 1968, Nationaal Archief, the Dutch National Archives Grammy Awards, an NAACP LifeIn 2004, Nancy also received the covtime Achievement Award, and the eted National Endowment for the Urban League’s Whitney Young Jr. Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters Fellowships Award. She also received a star on the Award, which is the highest honor Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was recgranted to jazz musicians by the U.S. ognized by the Martin Luther King, Jr. government. Is criticism of Israel forbidden? Speaking Truth to Power by Bill Fletcher, Jr.

It may seem like a strange question, but after CNN’s termination of Marc Lamont Hill, I have to ask that question. Let me go further: If criticism of Israel is not forbidden, is there a booklet somewhere with appropriate guidelines on what can be criticized and how criticism is supposed to be offered?

He made reference to a phrase “from the river to the sea which some pundits have suggested refers to an alleged support for eliminating Jews

I was outraged by the termination of Marc Lamont Hill. Coinciding with the bogus charges of anti-Semitism against Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour, one gets the growing feeling that allegations of anti-Semitism are primarily being used against anyone who supports Palestinians’ rights. And, while I am at it, is there any preface to these guidelines that explains why this only applies to Israel? I was outraged by the termination of Marc Lamont Hill. from Israel. How anyone can draw that conclusion is far from clear, particularly when one looks at the larger context of Hill’s speech. Hill spoke out in favor of Palestinian rights and also called for non-violence. His position was very clear. He was also calling for the respect of Palestinian rights in the total territory controlled by Israel, whether it was the Occupied Territories—which go to the

Jordan River—or the state of Israel—which goes to the Mediterranean Sea. There is nothing surprising in these comments particularly in light of the apartheid conditions that Palestinians face in both Israel and the Occupied Territories. The attack on Hill and on Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour are an attempt to divert attention away from the real sources of contemporary anti-Semitism, i.e., the emerging right-wing populist movement in the USA. Rather than focusing on the right-wing populists, including the neofascists, who regularly call for marginalizing or exterminating Jews, pro-Israeli hawks are using the term as a way of stifling criticism of the barbaric treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli government and their supporters. The suggestion that criticisms of Israel are anti-Semitic is as ridiculous as suggesting that a criticism of the Russian government is anti-Slavic or an attack on Morocco for occupying the Western Sahara is anti-Arab or anti-Muslim. Israel’s internal and external policies should be as subject to criticism as those of ANY other country on this planet. If they are not, then I, for one, want to know why. DEMOCRATS 2020 – NOT THE PERSON, BUT THE PROGRAM

The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Now that the midterm elections are over, and Democrats are savoring their victory, more than a dozen Democrats say they are considering running for President in 2020. The Democratic Party needs to get its act together if any of them has even a prayer of beating the clown that white conservatives love to love. The fact that Republicans stole an election from Stacey Abrams in Georgia suggests that our electoral infrastructure isn’t what it ought to be. The fact that Republicans in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina are attempting to change electoral rules suggests that the Party and civil society organizations need to spend some money ensuring fair elections. From where I sit, the focus on personalities is poorly placed. We ought, instead, think both about our election mechanics and an economic agenda to empower the majority of our citizens who live in an economically precarious situation. Too many of us struggle to

survive on the minimum wage, and too many unions have seen their influence erode in the face of hostile legislation. Too many do not have access to health care. Too many cities and states are willing to offer exorbitant tax breaks to attract a few jobs. Meanwhile, our infrastructure is crumbling, our environment is decomposing, and civility is a thing of the past. There’s a lot

of rhetoric, but Democrats have to explain what they stand for more clearly. Democrats have been so reactive, so anti-45, that they’ve not spun out a positive agenda. Oh, they say they stand for a living wage, for criminal justice reform, for access to health care and education, for racial economic justice (actually, they didn’t say that I did), and more. But too often, Democrats have gone with the status quo instead of looking at the changing needs of our nation. And the party is expert at grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory, failing to support progressive candidates who sometimes upset the status quo. Now, former Vice President Joe Biden says he is the most qualified person to be Presi-

Whenever and wherever we needed her, Nancy would be right there. “The incomparable Nancy Wilson. A musical genius, trailblazer, and hero who was loved and adored by so many. dent. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren took a blood test to prove that she is 1/1024 Native American, falling for 45’s BS. New Jersey Senator Corey Booker, also known as Spartacus, is considering the race, as is the incandescently intelligent California Senator Kamala Harris. Bernie Sanders, the 2016 independent candidate, keeps threatening to run again. That’s a non-starter for me! There are another couple of dozen potential candidates, from the very well known to the lesser known. Democrats run the risk of having a Republican-style circus during the primaries unless the field narrows. Already, two who were considering the race have dropped out. Nobody will miss Michael Avenatti since many of us did not know why he was in the race in the first place, but former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, who has just announced that he will not run, might have brought gravitas to the primaries. Patrick told Obama advisor David Axelrod that “It’s hard to see how you even get noticed in such a big, broad field without being shrill, sensational or a celebrity, and I’m none of those things. Our current President is shrill, sensational and a celebrity in his own mind. Can women be head coaches of NFL teams?

Jenny Ziegler, Miami Times Zsportsreport@gmail.com This [NFL] is a man’s world, but it would be nothing without a woman or a girl … (speaking in my James Brown voice) Sure, we are on the sidelines as cheerleaders, owners, reporters and such, but there has never been a female head coach manning the sidelines in any male professional sport. There’s always a first time for everything. Well, hold that thought as we are not there yet. Recently, Condoleezza Rice was trending on social media when it was reported by NFL insider, Adam Schefter that the Cleveland Browns were considering the former secretary of state for its most recent head coaching vacancy. Recently, Condoleezza Rice was trending on social media when it was reported by NFL insider, Adam Schefter that the Cleveland Browns were considering the former secretary of state for its most recent head coaching vacancy. Rice, though hailed as being intelligent, a great leader and a woman of great character, is an unrealistic candidate for the head coaching gig with the Browns, yet she has brought the discussion of coaching opportunities for women in male professional sports to the forefront. Condi, as she is affectionately called,

is also an adamant Cleveland Browns fan. “I love my Browns,” she said. Her love for the team stems from times when her and her father watched games together and cheered on Hall of

Rice went on to say, “One doesn’t have to play the game to understand it and motivate players, but experience counts – and it’s time to develop a pool of experienced women coaches.” Though Rice never played the game

enough to know that though she is not ready to be a coach in the NFL, there are women who can do the job with the proper training and opportunities. She has expressed an interest in the role of NFL commissioner. If she can broker peace deals in the Middle East, ceasefires and deal with terrorists and drug lords on behalf of our country — then why not? She ended her post by saying, “BTWI’m not ready to coach, but I would like to call a play or two next season if the Browns need ideas!” At 4-6-1, the Browns could perhaps use a few plays this season as opposed to waiting until next season. I’m just saying. The league however is making strides, as there are few teams that have opened their doors and are affording women the type of on-the-job-training required to be able to take that next step toward coaching in the NFL. The Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and the New York Jets all have hired females in some form of football Recently, Condoleezza Rice was trending on social media when it was reported by operational capacity (offensive assisNFL insider, Adam Schefter that the Cleveland Browns were considering the former tant, special team’s coach, strength secretary of state for its most recent head coaching vacancy. and conditioning coach, and assistant coach). Endless Entertainment Options

NIELSEN REPORT

By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil NNPA Columnist

Remember back-in-the-day when you used to poke your mouth out, bug your parents (or whatever adult was in charge) about being bored? Well, today’s kids can’t use that tired, old excuse. Neither can we, as grown folks, for that matter. We’ve been spoiled rotten and have access to endless entertainment options at our fingertips, 24/7. So, I’m excited to share with you insights from Nielsen’s first-ever Entertainment Consumer Report, which breaks down, in detail, the myriad of ways we are entertained – whether it’s game playing, watching movies or other video content, listening to music or reading a book. As entertainment consumers, we fall into three categories: high, moderate

and low entertainment spenders. Although just one-third of the population qualifies as high entertainment spenders, they account for more than 70 percent of entertainment spending. This segment of spenders are more likely to be ethnically diverse and women with young children than moderate and low entertainment spenders. Makes perfect sense to me since moms are usually the ones charged with keeping the kids occupied. When it comes to how we listen music, long gone are the days portrayed in the musicals “Cadillac Records” and “Dream Girls.” But wait. Though digital music leads overall music sales with 118 million digital albums and 1.3 billion tracks purchased last year, the sales of old-school vinyl LPs jumped nearly 18 percent over the last year. As the saying goes, “everything old is new again.” African-Americans index on the lower end of the demographic spectrum of digital music buyers. We, however, index slightly higher than other consumer groups in purchasing physical CDs. We make up 12 percent of on-demand music streamers. And, although all age groups enjoy music across all platforms, young adults between 18 and

Facebook needs to do better

24 spend the most time listening to music, about six hours a week, which is an hour more than those 25 and up. You know how big companies sponsor concert tours and pay big bucks for an artist to endorse their product? It’s good business. Hitching to a star’s wagon has been shown to increase buy rates of a product by as much as 28 percent among the artists’ fans. Switching gears to what and how we watch video content at home, well, the sky is pretty much the limit with multiple devices to choose from. Some examples of those are: DVR/Blu-Ray, video-on-demand, plus subscriber servic\ es like Netflix and/or Hulu. There are also video game consoles, computers, tablets and/or mobile devices. Here are some quick facts: 25-34 year olds are the biggest buyers of movie/TV DVDs and streaming video. African-Americans index lower than other demographics in movie/TV DVD and streaming video purchases. Females index higher than males in movie/TV DVD purchase, while men outrank women when it comes to buying streaming video. What are some other forms of entertainment we have available to us? Well, I am glad you asked. Some, like

me, still love the feel of a good book in your hands. But, I know some of you may also appreciate the convenience of e-readers. Turns out, there’s not much difference between print and eBook buyers. Among adults online surveyed in this report, both groups of readers are more likely females between the ages of 55 and 64. African-Americans index slightly higher with purchasing eBooks than print books. Can you guess at our favorite books from last year? If you guessed E.L. James’ Fifty Shades trilogy, followed by Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games series, you were correct. And, when we like something, we want to enjoy the experience in all ways possible. Case in point: “The Hunger Games,” which was also a box office success, was the fourth best selling print book of 2012, the top selling music soundtrack and the third most-purchased DVD. Ask ALMA By Alma Gill

Starting out LYING! Dear Alma, I’m getting married in three weeks and I couldn’t be happier. My fiancé is the best man I’ve ever met and he loves me like a queen. All of our wedding arrangements have been made and he is so loving and generous; he paid for everything. I knew from the moment we met, that I wanted to be with him and I want to spend the rest of my life loving him. Our relationship is perfect except for one thing. I know he wants to have children, that’s all we talk about and I wish I could, but I can’t. I’ve known since I was 23 years old. This has been a heartbreaking reality for me and the only other person who knows is my sister. I didn’t tell him when we first met, it just never seemed like the right time. I can’t tell him now that we can’t have children, because I don’t want to ruin our life together. I know that we’re meant for each other. I am praying that I may be able to have a miracle baby; I know it happens. I’m 37 and I know if we don’t get married now, I never will. I don’t want to live my life alone. I want to be happily married and have my husband for the rest of my life. My sister is my maid of honor and she’s threatening to tell him. I told her, I will disown her if she does. I think she’s just jealous of my future husband and our relationship. How can I stop her from ruining my life? Hiding a Terrible Secret Dear Secret, Um, did I miss a sentence? How is your sister, the one who’s telling the truth, ruining your life? Oh no, Miss Thing, you gotta own your decision of deceitfulness. You’re absolutely “azzbackward” in this treacherous portrayal of a partnership and I promise you that your “azzbackwardness” will come back to haunt you. Having a child is a sacred bond between two people and should not be taken lightly. I could see if you didn’t know you couldn’t have children, that’s one thing, but to already be aware of this information and not share it with your future husband is vicious and vindictive. Yes, I said it, you’re selfish, self-centered, shim-shammy and not to be trusted. The only happiness you’re willing to acknowledge is your own. How one sided is that and who wants to be in a relationship with someone who is constantly tilted to the left? You’re so blinded by what you want and what makes you and only you happy. That’s pathetic. I hear you when you say there have been miracle babies, yeah, um, it happens, but it also doesn’t happen, more than you want to admit. Tell your fiancé, now, right now. He has a right to know about your medical condition. If you had been up front the entire time, I’m sure he would understand and remain committed to walking this path of life with you. I find the fact that you’re comfortable drowning in a sea of “conniving and cunning” quite troubling. In your head, disowning your sister is the “right” thing to do, if she discloses your secret. So, much so your logic is to disown your sister. Chil’ please. You made your bed and now you have to lie in it. Whatever comes your way is what you deserve. SMDH, I hope your sister does tell him the truth and I hope you keep your promise and disown her, both of them will be all the better for it. by Caren Rodriguez prepare for the future and to not work so hard! One day my mother called and asked me to come and get her and bring her from New Jersey to Dallas. I was shocked. She had spent 60 years of her life “up North” and she didn’t care too much for Texas heat. Still, I went home, loaded her up and she moved to the Big D. If only I knew what I know now, I would have heard what she wasn’t saying and I would have prepared better, if that is possible. I would have her for 18 months and there are so many things I could have done, but to do many would have meant acknowledging that her time was limited. Thanks to John Beckwith and Golden Gate Funeral Home, I was able to honor her wishes. I could go on and on with my “If only I knew” vignettes; and I will in the future. I encourage you to join

HOLLY WOOD ON THE SCENE:

Hollywood's Golden Globe Picks

By Hollywood Hernandez

Nominees for this year’s Golden Globes were announced last week, with a very diverse list of movies and actors (four out of 10 of the top movies featured people of color including Black Panther, Blackkklansman, and Crazy Rich Asians), so I figured I’d join in with my nominations for the best of 2018. Hands down, the best movie for me was Green Book. It’s based on a true story about an African American pianist, Dr. Don Shirley, played by 2016’s Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, who embarks on a tour of the old “Jim Crow South” along with his driver “Tony Lip”, played by Oscar nominee Viggo Mortenson. The movie paints a very rich tapestry of the history of the civil rights era, where Blacks, even talented artists like Dr. Shirley, were second-class

citizens who could play in upscale concert venues but who couldn’t eat or use the toilets there. But more than any other subject in the film Green Book is a movie about the friendship that develops between two men of different backgrounds and races. I found the inspiring message in the movie to be the world would be such a better place if we could all just get along. My runner-up for best movie of the year is The Hate You Give. It’s based on a novel by a young African American writer, Angie Thomas, that tells the story of a tragic police shooting of an African American teen boy which is witnessed by a young black girl, Star. Her character is well played by Amandla Stenberg, who gives a very strong and emotional performance. These two movies are playing in

theaters now. I urge you to please support some great filmmaking in these two Black films. Just a few footnotes about this year’s Golden Globe nominations; Spike Lee is nominated for Best Director for Blackkklansman and Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington is nominated for Best Actor for his work in the same movie with Spike Lee. Crazy Rich Asians has two Golden Globe nominations; one for Best Movie and a Best Actress nomination for Constance Wu, an American born Asian actress. The 2018 Oscar nominations come out in January. My hope is that they follow suit with such a diverse group of nominations as did this years’ Golden Globes.

THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW: Tia Mowry

The Valder Beebe Show Fvery day God’s blessings are renewed and I can count on His direction, guidance and blessings. My blessings come in many forms, yet I am most delighted by wonderful guests for the Valder Beebe Show. I am delighted that you may read [Garland Journal News], connect digitally [IMESSENGER newspaper] or view on ValderBeebeShow. com, my interview with Tia

Mowry, a young successful actress, author and entrepreneur talks about her role as mom to her oldest who has peanut allergy. Actress Tia Mowry, best known for her role in the sitcom Sister, Sister and her digital series Quick Fix. Tia is married to actor Cory Hardrict [Battle Los Angeles] and they are parents to two, Cree and their daughter Ciaro, a toddler. Tia is now a part of a new educational awareness campaign, “Talking Peanut Allergy,” aimed to ignite a conversation around the challenges of living with a peanut allergy. Mowry shares her journey and the challenges of protecting her son Cree with peanut allergy while helping ignite a national dialogue on the condition. Mowry is joining the

‘Talking Peanut Allergy’ campaign to share her story with the hope that parents of children with a peanut allergy realize they’re not alone. She hopes the campaign can help create a community where people can inspire, educate and support each other. VBS: Tia, you are lending your celebrity and your voice to this campaign, “Talking Peanut Allergy,” TM: I just want to ignite and spark a conversation about children with peanut allergy. My son Cree has had peanut allergy since he was three, now he’s 7. There are actually 1.5 million children in the U.S. with peanut allergy. VBS: Your cookbook, Whole New You: How Real Food Transforms Your Life, for a Healthier, More Gorgeous You is #1 on New York best seller

list. Congratulations! I have Whole New You, at my home. TM: Yes, its number one in the endometritis category that is one of the main reasons I decided to write this book is because I suffer from the condition of Endometriosis. I’m happy you have the cookbook, what’s your favorite in the book? VBS: I’m a healthy eater so your veggie focus is my favorite. TM: I really appreciate you loving my book………. Malveaux, continued from page 4 that level of insanity that 45 brings to the table. The issue, also, should not be one of who is the most sensational, but who has the most focused program, and the basis of the Democratic program must be economic justice for working Americans. Back in the day, we used to say, “It’s not the man, it’s the plan.” In gender-neutral terms, it’s not the person, it’s the program. For Democrats to build on the momentum of the midterm election, they must drill down on communicating dynamic economic programs. I’m encouraged by folks like LaTosha Brown and Black Voters Matter. They are doing ground up, not top down, organizing, going into commu-

nities and focusing on the races they deem essential, which are not always national or statewide races. When people come out for a key local, they will also vote in the “big” races. But too often the Democratic Party focuses only on the biggest elections, with an agenda people can’t necessarily identify with. Democratic Party leaders need to sit down with Black Voters Matter as soon as they can and learn how to connect with the voters who can make a difference in 2020. Or, they can continue with business as usual and experience the consequences.
