Now, while I studied journalism, I don’t have the receipts to present myself as a weatherperson, meteorologist or even weather anchor. However, I can tell you this — things are about to heat up in Texas! Just this week, for instance, former United States Representative Beto O’Rourke announced that he is a candidate for Texas Governor and U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson says she will be making an important announcement this Saturday at Kirkwood Temple Gymnasium. Mr. O’Rourke, who also ran for Senate and the Presidency, will host a rally and town hall meeting at Paul Quinn College and a huge crowd is expected, many will also be candidates for November 19, 2021

Will the Democratic Party (nationally and locally) avoid endorsing in the primary? Will the Black female vote be respected? Will candidates advertise in the Black press, where some of the most loyal Democratic voters look for information? So many questions and so few answers. Time and time again I have been told that Democrats like to slaughter their own; that they fight hard against one anoth-

er but are really scared to fight Republicans. I know some tough Democrats, some really tough ones; but I also know some wimpy, lazy ones also, and we need them all! Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church Installs New Senior Pastor Historic Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, where he served as senior pastor for eight years. He was selected to serve as senior pastor of Pilgrim Rest earlier this year and began leading the church in August. Dr. Williams attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA but completed his Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Pastoral Ministry from the Birmingham-Easonian Baptist Bible College in Birmingham, AL. He also obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and a Master’s

degree in Theological Studies from Faith International University and Seminary in Tacoma, WA. Pastor Williams enrolled as a Doctoral Student at Virginia University of Lynchburg, Virginia (HBCU) in 2018 and completed his Doctor of Ministry degree in 2021. Pastor Williams’ dissertation was “Equipping Informally Trained Christian Educators with the Principles of Biblical Exposition.” Rev. Dr. Williams is married to the former Joannie Dionne Holiday and they have two sons.

The installation celebration will kick off Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. with a DFW service featuring Pastor William T. Glynn of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Worth as the guest speaker. An author and prize-winning writer, Orion Jean begin making headlines in 2020 after winning the National Kindness Speech Contest; and equally impressive was his donation of his $500 prize to Children’s Medical Center Hospital in Dallas. Saturday, Orion was in South Dallas, at the Ideal Neighborhood Association area’s T.R. Hoover Community Center, spreading kindness to the tune of thousands of books distributed to a steady stream of children of all ages. Accompanied by his parents, McDonald and Kherri, and younger sister, Crown; the author of “A Kids Book about Leadership,” shared his message of kindness and making this world a better place. I now know what was Lucille “Big Mama’ Allen saying to me and others when she stated, “you must pour into those who pour into you!” I learned that this lesson was about deciding who you give respect, trust and honor and who receives it from you. It was about giving yourself the permission to grow, learn and bond with those who grown learn and bond for your life lessons. Throughout your life, you will meet people who will only care for you temporarily. There are people whose spirit will entwine with yours for a moment, then wither and walk away. We all know people who, under the guise of mutual engagement, will only take from you. Big Mama said be very weary of fair-weather friends – she told me that those are people who all around you during your good times but are completely unavailable during your bad times. Big Mama said they were “rough patch” absent. The COVID-19 pandemic surely allowed us to see who our

fair-weather friends were. I am reminded of the very famous song penned by writers, McFadden and Whitehead, as sung by the O-Jays, called “Backstabbers.” The song referred to those people who praise you in person and were poised to take what you have and undermine your progress when you are not in the room. Big Mama never gave us a lesson without a bright light at the end of the tunnel. She said the good thing about temporary people is they cannot steal your joy without your permission. All of these temporary people and their eventual departures don’t determine the worth of your life. Currently, the death of Floyd and the “Woke” moment caused our young BIPOCs to rise up as navigators of change just as Emmett Till’s murder set off a wave of activism and resistance during the Civil Rights Movement in 1955, especially in the segregated South. Floyd and Till’s death exposed the longstanding violence against Black men and women. Yet, what also surfaced is that the activists of Till and the activists of Floyd are not collaborating at the optimum level. The purveyors of institutionalized racism

The Three G’s: Gluttony, Gossip and Greed FAITHFUL UTTERANCES BY DR. FROSWA BOOKER-DREW

I’ve witnessed several friends leave the faith. They have talked about the hypocrisy they experienced at the church. One of my friends calls it ‘buffet Christianity’—when we pick and chose what sins we are willing to condemn and others we want forgiveness for. I’m often stunned at how there are certain sins that we are so willing to call out and find scripture to quote to prove our point and yet, fail to see the shortcomings we have. One of the sins that I’m guilty of along with so are many is gluttony. Gluttony is defined as “habitual greed or excess in eating.” I’ve used food at times to comfort me and in my pain, food can be the go-to instead of God. Food can become our God, an idol. I’m stunned that as the body of Christ, we can call out those don’t live the way we do, but we don’t focus on issues like gluttony, greed, and murdering others with our tongues. We host more church events that have fried food and sugar only to offer subsequent health fairs instead of addressing the root cause. We label gossip as just telling it like it is and sharing the truth--never mind how many reputations are destroyed. We’ve pushed prosperity preaching without focusing on character, kindness, and November 19, 2021

helping others. It’s only about how much money we can make without realizing God wants your soul to prosper— and wants us to thrive in every area of our lives (3 John 2). There are several scriptures that speak about those things that we tend to not discuss in the church: Gluttony “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:19) “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat.” (Proverbs 23:20) Gossip A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. (Proverbs 16:28) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29) Greed Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15) No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24) From my understanding, if we are going to call out others you better be prepared to look in the mirror and be honest about your faults and failures. What’s causing so much chaos is the fact that we will

not address those things that we think are small and yet, they can cause a separation from God’s plan for our lives and from those we interact with. Song of Solomon 2:15 says, “Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards, for our vineyards are in blossom.” It’s those little things that we ignore that can destroy the growth that God can provide and give to us. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of

liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:2325) It’s not a buffet to pick what you want to follow and condemn what isn’t your issue. Let’s all take a look in our mirrors and pay attention to those little things that steal the life we’ve been promised. The Art of Mentorship has been recognized as the most crucial component within the entire mission of affectively developing youth toward successful lives out of low-privileged communities and neighborhoods. Please observe one North Texas family that is mastering that craft, as it stands on the rock-solid shoulders of a passionate Tennessee-based patriarch and matriarch that have represented and emulated, at a high level, not only strong family values, but far beyond that, a world of education and community service. As if having already mentored, inspired and educated thousands of young Black women and girls over the past decade was not enough, the Werthing/Reynolds family and their institution, the Werthing Foundation, has even added a new chapter to their endeavors, while at the same time pulling triumphant conquest out of the jaws of tragedy. The two sisters are not by any means resting on their laurels and in fact have tapped into new sources of motivation to take their count of young beneficiaries into the tens of thousands and beyond. Werthing’s projects and programs have established an undeniable track record of taking young Black women and girls from a state of hopelessness and negative outlook in their lives to embracing self-discovery and self-empowerment, thus transforming themselves into productive community leaders, averting potential self-destruction and replacing it with engaging in ultimate self-fulfillment. “If they see it, they can believe it,” said Reynolds. “If they can believe it, they can touch it. If they touch it, they can become it.” Study after study consistently confirms the positive and lasting impact of strong mentoring of youth and young adults, especially with young African Americans of color, boys and girls. It makes sense when adequate thought is applied: How can one expect to achieve a certain level of success if they have not seen anybody who “look like us” excel at any of the various levels of society?

“It was important to see people who look like me accomplishing great things,” said Felisha Burleson, a foster care alumnus, who went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Sociology at Texas Woman’s University and has become the founder of The Patchwork Society, which provides youth services and professional development for young adults. “I aspired to be like them. Granted, I could turn on the TV and see a few women of color doing good things, but in my mind, those were not ‘regular people.’ Seeing regular people go on to accomplish things provided me with hope and introduced me to a world of opportunities that I did not know were available.” A report by the Office of Juvenile Justice Programs showed that 87 percent of young women who attended mentoring programs went to college within two years of high school graduation; 52 percent were less likely to become pregnant during their teenage years; and 46 percent were less likely to use illegal drugs and alcohol. The Werthing Foundation has experienced and practiced time-proven formulas for several years, with remarkable results. Statistics on their website indicate their work has possibly exceeded the above-mentioned numbers.

But as Gloria was building a successful career as a computer software engineer and technology specialist with corporations such as EDS, Cigna and Aetna, she said she continued to deal with deep feelings to find a way of transferring the same passion of education she adopted from her parents into the grassroots community. She then saw an open door. “I had a gap in my corporate world and I welcomed that gap,” she said. “I could not avoid my calling, making the transition first as an entrepreneur, then to the non-profit field and the forming of the Werthing Foundation. “I accepted that calling of family education and giving back.” Immediately, the Foundation hit the streets running, November 19, 2021

They sought out the “young, gifted and Black,” that showed distinct needs of mentoring to counter the environment that could steer them in a negative direction. “We went where the kids were; anything south of I-635, we were on top of it,” said Gloria. “We let them know that they would each have the opportunity to be successful if they followed the right leaders.” The Werthing Foundation comes to a community equipped with every societal resource available – mentors, staff, volunteers, sponsorship and donations from corporations and other businesses, youth agencies, guest speakers, educators, internships, counselors, church leaders, etc. Programs implement-

ed have included L.E.A.D. (Learn, Experience, Apply, Demonstrate), Girls’ Day, and Girl Power Academy. Recently, however, a family tragedy shook the Werthing Foundation to its core and possibly challenged its role in the community. On February 12, 2020, Gloria’s and Willie’s 30-year old daughter, Gabrielle Lamiah Reynolds, died from the effects of a blood clot. The Reynolds family notes that Gabrielle’s death was not related at all to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet her untimely and sudden death simply devastated Gloria’s spirits. “My world came crashing down,” Gloria said, adding that she could not stay in the doldrums. “I knew I had family and my parents and that I had to do something to get me out of bed every day.” Thus, as Gloria stated, “before Gabrielle’s obituary came out,” she founded and started

D and medical degrees – and all from HBCUs – the Werthing/Reynolds family continues to stroke the power of education and giving back to forge a bright future for everyone. Funded by the City of Dallas to mitigate the impact of closing the current Linfield Road at-grade crossing, the program will serve residents of the Joppa neighborhood, located six miles southeast of Downtown Dallas.

It was my ticket out, along with countless others who didn’t have the options of college or sports as an escape from the city and circumstances that lead to no happy endings. Ironically, I had a scholarship to Morgan State University and an acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, but mom could not wrap her mind around the idea of a free education. She still imagined bills arriving in the mail for room,

One more would be more than she could manage as a single mom. I get it! Poor has layers to it-- it’s not as simple as missing meals. I left for basic training in February of 1976. AIR FORCE BAND ing of the 18th and off I went to a new life, a new world. I don’t think my mom believed I would actually leave home, although I think she needed me to go. I lived at home while I attended Brooklyn College and there were no family discussions about enlistment. I enlisted on my own in early November of ‘75 and once I celebrated my 18th birthday, I was of age, and on my way to basic training a few months later. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, the family discussions had been about relocating me to Syracuse to live with dad while attending Syracuse University. That might have actually worked out but for one major hitch-- dad wasn’t having it. He was entirely against the idea. Feeling rejected by both parents, I looked for the quickest way out. Who wants to feel unwanted… like a burden? Not me! I wanted out, so off I went, angry at the world around me. Angry at my family, I was determined to show them that I didn’t need them. That’s youthful hubris. Problems seem simple to adolescents-- they don’t love me. For the adolescent, solutions tend to escalate to the

extreme… they don’t love me, so I’ll just leave, split, bounce. Hubris of the young… that was me! Homelife was confusing. I was too young to appreciate or understand that mom was justifiably exhausted from raising three kids by herself in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. I couldn’t grasp how overwhelmed she must have been as a human being, struggling and persevering day after day. Not only did she send my older siblings off to college, sister graduating from Boston University, brother graduating from Drexel, but she provided me with orthodontic braces and violin lessons. To the adult me, mom was heroic. I hated most of my five years in the military and I’m so glad I enlisted. I grew, I matured, I traveled the world, and learned to see the world through eyes that have helped me navigate through the ups and downs of grown folks’ life challenges. My time in the Air Force gave me time to build an inner-core and outer-armor that allows me to sustain through challenges I encounter every day in the music business. I have no doubt that I’m the man I am for having experi-

enced the world in uniform. Whenever I visit a VA hospital or clinic, I know I’m part of a tradition, an American history, an African history, a world history, a Biblical history of soldiers. I’m also part of a family legacy. My son was an

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, Witherite Law Group, Fiesta and Fort Worth ISD Family Action Center have partnered to provide 1,000 free turkeys to families facing food insecurity on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 a.m. at the Fiesta Store located at 4245 E. Berry Street, Fort Worth, TX 76105. According to recent media reports, turkey supplies are down more than 24% and the prices are up. However, Witherite Law Group and Fiesta have plenty of turkeys, 1,000 in fact, to make sure Fort Worth families and elderly in need have turkeys this Thanksgiving.
