If You Want to Hear God Smile, Tell Him Your Plans THE BLACK CARD BY TERRY ALLEN I told you many times over, Lucille “Big Mama” Allen would be trending over everybody else. Big Mama’s lessons are always appropriate for the time. The great thing about her wisdom is re-stated over and over again in others wherever I go. Just recently, as I hosted In the Spirit Entertainment, Inc. Dallas Lit event, where I asked the panel a question made publicly known when Denzel Washington reacted to Will Smith after that famous slap and said to him, “When you are at your highest, that is when the devil comes for you.” Big Mama would offer an alternative for Will she tell him to reach inside and remind him of Jeramiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you,” myimessenger.com
declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Big Mama knew The Bible showed a very direct route to your best self and your internal gift and the execution of your intentional assignment. Spiritual leader, Iyanla Vanzant flips the statement and says, ‘If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans.” While we go about planning our days and lives, we sometimes learn that God or our higher power has another plan for us. It’s a saying that resonates with the year-plus lost to COVID and the ravages of the Pandemic. This is also a quote from Woody Allen, I believe the original is an old Yiddish proverb “We plan, God laughs.” But you get the idea. Every time I heard this sentence I would laugh; I could always relate to it but not as much as I do right now. The meaning of this saying
struck me in a different way. It might mean that even with the best of plans, things can change with the blink of an eye due to an illness, injury, or even death. Now that I think

Leaders represent citizens’ interests and represent their ideas, and citizens vote for them in elections. In addition to the right to vote, U.S. citizens have the right to run for office at the federal level. So, if you want to sustain democracy, protect the ballot and hear God smile, then vote as if Obama is on the ballot. MY TRUTH by Cheryl Smith Publisher
It’s that time of year again Wednesday morning, I was a guest on a show talking about voting and how we can get folks to the polls. Prior to the show, I was thinking about what the heck I was going to talk about. What could I say that would be considered as intelligent, thought-provoking, profound and actually having an impact on potential voters? I knew that host Stacy Brown, of Let it Be Known, the show representing the Black Press of America, would be addressing the key issues and races across the country. I just wondered what could possibly be said that would make folks rush to the polls like in the movie, Head of State, featuring comedians Chris Rock and the late, great Bernie Mac. In the scene, reporters announced that the polls were closed on the East Coast and there was a chance that a Black man could become president. Next thing you know the camera switches to scores of white people running from their homes to the polls. Oh if there is something we could say or do to get that response from our audiences! Which brings me to my truth. I am going to be on the phone every day for the next week. I am November 4, 2022

going to call people I know and ask them to get up and go vote. Every conversation that I have with anyone is going to include some dialogue about voting. This is the least I can do. I have already voted.
For the first time in ages, yes! And sadly I chose whether or not to vote for some people who look like me but have not done much to make life better for people like me. You get the picture?
Prior to the show, I was thinking about what the heck I was going to talk about. What could I say that would be considered as intelligent, thought-provoking, profound and actually having an impact on potential voters? Did I vote the entire ballot? Yes, I did! Was I challenged with some of the races where I had to make a choice? Sure was! Were there some races where I wished the person had a challenger? Heck yes? Did I write in names for some races?
4
I need people to understand that voting is critical, that each vote matters and can make the difference — just like a non-vote can do. What we do today will have a definite impact on generations to come. We want them to be proud of us. Not voting will do nothing but embarrass them and they’ll be lying like other descendants who try to deny their history. myimessenger.com

The problem is getting worse and debating over guns hasn’t made a difference. 21-year-old Asia Womack was murdered by a male friend in Dallas because she beat him in a basketball game. “But this is so senseless,” said Pastor John Delley. “You become embarrassed basically because a female beat you in basketball.” According to the family, the shooter took his kids and brother home and came back to the park, shooting Asia five times. 30-year-old Nestor Hernandez was in Dallas Methodist Hospital’s labor and delivery area about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 22. That’s when Hernandez entered the hospital room where his girlfriend had given birth the day before. While in the room with his girlfriend and newborn child, Hernandez began to act strangely and accused his girlfriend of cheating on him, according to documents. Two hospital employees were shot and killed by Hernandez as they entered the room to do their job. Both of these men are not the exception. There are countless incidents that we can all reference that point to the increase of mass shootings and domestic abuse. Much of this is steeped in a warped view of manhood. I must admit that I’m blessed to know some amazing men who defy what we see in the news. Yet, we must acknowlNovember 4, 2022

We don’t take the time to process how we feel and move from feelings to reacting often negatively, ignoring the consequences of our behavior. It’s critical that we normalize

therapy. People need help! It’s important that we understand the magnitude of this issue. Our views of both women and men are limiting. This perspective is a matter of life and death. PlanStreetInc states, “More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced either physical violence, rape, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Victims are commonly abused by those who are closest to them.” We’ve become desensitized and accepting of this behavior. Something must change and soon. It’s important to establish
6
God views both men AND women as important: • “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 ESV) It’s also important that we recognize the value in one another: • “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3 ESV) When we value others, we will treat others well. Unresolved anger is dangerous. • “For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (James 1:20 ESV) It’s also important to realize that the way we see others is tied to how we feel about ourselves. When we don’t see our own value and the way God sees us, it’s easier to dismiss and even hurt those closest to us. The Bible gives us the knowledge on doing things differently: • “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19 ESV) The solution can’t be legislated. It requires a change in our thinking and in our behavior. Anxiety? – It’s Gon Be OK! QUIT PLAYIN’ BY VINCENT L. HALL
They keep sayin’ I should get help But I don’t even know what I need They keep sayin’ speak your truth And at the same time, say they don’t believe! Megan The Stallion is officially one of mine. Now I have four daughters. Megan continues to flash the level of intelligence, insight, and intrigue that I love to see in entertainers. “Anxiety,” one of her newest drops, hits home with those who understand what Gen Z’ers live through. Underneath the surface, this generation is burdened with thoughts of inadequacy and confusion. They don’t use the victim card, but they feel the world’s weight on their shoulders. Megan Jovon Ruth Pete is a native Texan according to the thumbnail bio in IMDb. “Megan Thee Stallion was born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Houston. The seductive femcee was a full-time college student and a choreographed dancer and model. She graduated this year, from Texas Southern University! Under her mother’s management company, Pretty Time Entertainment Management, she gained notoriety after meeting super producer TA and releasing her first single, “Like a Stallion,” in April 2016. After dropping several hot verses on a few Texas Cyphers, her verse on ‘The Houston Cypher’ over Drake’s 4PM in Calabasas placed her as a top trending topic in Houston on Twitter. Soon after, she released her mixtape ‘Rich Ratchet’ and then her first EP “Make It Hot” soon followed.” You would think Megan had it all. But as you listen to Anxiety, you sense that success is not synonymous with peace and tranquility. Like all of us, Gen Z must deal with fears, insecurities, and “Bad days!” myimessenger.com
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Bad bitches have bad days too Friday, Saturday, Sunday, bounce back How a bad bitch always do! Everybody has bad days, but our own bad days seem the worst. An article published by “Health Match” this past September carried a somber headline. “The Gen Z Mental Health wave - what is causing the surge?” Look at the litany of concerns.
that 25% of Gen Z report experiencing emotional distress—nearly double the levels reported by older generations During the pandemic, those between 20–24 years old showed the biggest leaps in anxiety.” The takeaway Megan provides is as simple as it is perplexing. All she wants to hear is that she will be OK. Check on your Gen Z family and try to see life as they do.
Gen Z’ers are more likely than previous generations to report mental health concerns, be aware of racial inequality, be racially and ethnically diverse, and be immigrants’ children. They are also more socially progressive (comfortable using gender-neutral pronouns and support same-sex marriage). “ The “norms” we accepted were not complex or far-reaching. Our worlds were Black and White. Their worlds are global and much more demanding. Gen Z’ers take social responsibility seriously, and COVID heightened their anxieties exponentially. “The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that 90% of Gen Z experienced psychological or physical symptoms due to stress in the last year. At the same time, 70% of Gen Z say that Anxiety and depression are significant problems among their peers. Even 30% of parents surveyed felt that their child was experiencing negative effects on their emotional or mental health due to social distancing and school closures. Additionally, McKinsey Insights notes
Talk and text them regularly. And please, quit interjecting all of your self-righteous biases and Bull$h!t! If I could write a letter to Heaven I would tell my mama that I shoulda been listenin’ And I would tell her sorry that I really been wildin’ And ask her to forgive me, ‘cause I really been tryin’! Megan’s mother died of brain cancer in 2019, but she left her some advice; “Don’t Stop!” Megan ends this missive with equal portions of misery, reality and hope. All I really wanna hear is, “It’ll be okay” Bounce back ‘cause a bad bitch can have bad days! Quit Playin’ like our 15-25’s don’t have apprehensions. Talk to your children, but don’t lie. Gen Z’ers have anxiety but are honest and can detect a lie before it leaves your lips! Love you Megan, and It really is gon be OK!

Moving Into the Future
What is Good for Dallas County Dear Dallas County, We are at a crossroads. As you know, I am Faith Johnson and I am running for Dallas County District Attorney against the current District Attorney John Creuzot. I am sure you recently heard of the gut-wrenching news of an open shooter at Methodist Hospital in the maternity ward of all places. A place that is to represent the joy of new life entering our county, a place for new mothers to heal and restore after 9 months of housing a human in her own body, and a place for families to gather to celebrate new life. And then there are the nurses, doctors, and hospital staff who give their lives to serving others, often into the wee hours of the night and often at the expense of their own families and lives to help, save, & serve others. The least we can do is provide them safe places to do what they are gifted and trained to do. The saddest part is that this is not the only incident of this kind— violet crime like this is happening all over our county. Some will say that statistics show crime is down. However, statistics do not mean squat when a proven violent criminal walks into a hospital and opens fire killing two people. Like so many, I am sickened and saddened by the constant shape shifting and blame game of our leaders. Here is the bottom-line truth: it is up to the leaders of this county to get togethmyimessenger.com
er, collaborate, and execute on proven procedures and protocols that keep the people safe and violet criminals off the street as much as at all possible. It is simple. It is not as complicated as some would have us believe. The truth is that the policies of our top county leaders are either knowingly or unknowingly breeding violent crime and vagrancy and The People are suffering for it. It is time for smart on crime policies and true execution of those policies. It does not matter if our leaders are good people, simply lacking courage to make tough decisions or if they are incompetent. Lack of courage, incompetence, ignorance, apathy, and even corruption all yield the same thing: toxic environments for the staff and The People. It is time for change in Dallas County leadership. This is serious stuff and we are in desperate times. I am not only asking for your
Faith Johnson
vote on November 8th but I am also asking you to share my story with your friends, family, and neighbors. Police chief Eddie Garcia was recently quoted as saying: “Our hearts @DallasPD go out to the those affected by this tragedy, I’m outraged along with our community, at the lack of accountability, and the travesty of the fact that under this broken system, we give violent criminals more chances, than our victims. The pendulum has swung too far.” Our law enforcement is hurting and needs our help.
11
Our county and municipal employees are hurting and need our help. The citizens of this county are hurting and need our help. How can we help? By voting into leadership a competent, strong, courageous leader that answers to only God Himself, the oath of office, The People, and the Constitution of the United States, designed to PROTECT & PRESERVE the God given rights of all citizens of this great land. While my heart is so heavy with senseless tragedies that absolutely can be prevented, I am also so very grateful for the people of this county. As I walk into my final week of campaigning and I reflect on the countless volunteers who have given so much of their time and their heart to support me and all the people I have met knocking on doors, my heart longs to protect this county and her people. With the right team in place, we can absolutely change the course of the entire county for generations. Even small shifts in the rudder of a large ship can change the trajectory of the whole ship. NOW is the time. We cannot afford one more day with the current leadership. Dallas deserves better. VOTE FOR FAITH JOHNSON on November 8th and please spread the word! Investing in Fair Park will bring attention, tourists, resources, jobs and economic development to South Dallas. Funding will enable the upgrading of six of the largest buildings and the addition of needed amenities like dining, shopping and restrooms. A modern Fair Park in South Dallas means bigger shows, more entertainment and consistent local and tourist traffic flowing through our community. The upgrades will spur neighboring economic development. Homelessness and the November 8th Vote OUR VOICES DR. JOHN E. WARREN
This week we have new numbers suggesting that the homeless population is growing in spite of efforts to make more housing available. This is in spite of efforts that are underway to open more shelters. There is discussion about the growing numbers of homeless without talking about why and how. The numbers are growing because of two reasons: (1) the increasing high cost of rentals with no real controls on landlords or what they charge; and (2) the rising cost of living outpacing minimum wages. In a county with a population of 49 percent renters, one would think there would be a real ef-

But those changes do not include developing the kind of civic responsibility that could lead the homeless to becoming voters and there“Until renters become voters, one fore taking long term can not expect to see real efforts steps to not only improve their personal condition, to move more homeless into but also the quality of life existing vacancies.” - Dr. John E. Calling Out Global Anti-Blackness THE LAST WORD BY DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX
In Los Angeles, City Council President Nury Martinez resigned both her Council Presidency and later her seat after someone leaked vile racist sentiments that she shared with members of a Latinx cabal that included other council members, Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo. Also present was the now-resigned President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Ron Herrera. As of this writing, de Leon and Cedillo retain their seats, but Martinez’s goose was cooked when President Joe Biden, Governor Gavin Newsom, and dozens of others condemned Martinez’s racist comments and those who concurred with them with their silence. While I am glad that Martinez is gone, I am not so sure that her resignation is quite a victory. In resigning, she addressed “little Latina girls” and said, “I hope I’ve inspired you to dream beyond that which you can see.” What did she hope to inspire them to become? Racists like herself? If she is an inspiration, I am fearful. Disgraced politicians often go on to teach at universities, establish policy institutes or mentoring programs, or find lucrative jobs in private industry. While everyone deserves a second chance and nobody deserves to be outright canceled, apologies and resignations mean nothing if there is no honmyimessenger.com
est accounting of what was wrong and if there is no remediation. Martinez seems to lack the capacity to recognize what she did wrong and to correct it. Thus, anyone who hires her, offers her an award, or lifts her up is as racist as she is until and un-
or two, or even five or ten, resignations are not enough. Dismantling anti-Black structures is the only way to eliminate them. Too many embrace anti-Blackness and anti-Black structures. Consider Alabama Senator Tommy Tu-
Sen. Tommy Tuberville
less she provides more than tepid apologies and self-justifying resignations. Nury Martinez is Hydra, and Greek mythology describes Hydra as a many-headed serpent Hercules beheaded only to have two more heads replace it. Nury and other racists can resign, but the tragedy of her hope that she “inspired” little Latina girls set the stage for other Hydras, some younger, some more subtle, to replace her. Hercules finally killed the Hydra snake by killing it with a burning torch. The same torch that killed the mythological snake must destroy the structures that support global anti-Blackness. One
berville (R), who shamefully described Democrats as “pro-crime” because they support reparations. “They want reparation because they think the people that do the crime are owed that.” It is tempting to say that Tuberville, a former football coach, too often played his sport without a helmet. Was the entire Republican Party engaging in the same foolhardiness? Where are the Republicans of conscience (are there any) calling Tuberville on his foolishness? In contrast, President Biden, perhaps risking some Latinx support, swiftly called Nury on her racism. As Biden’s press secretary, Kar-
17
ine Jean-Pierre, said, “Here is the difference between Democrats and Republicans. When a Democrat says something racist or antisemitic, we hold Democrats accountable. When a MAGA Republican says something racist and or antisemitic, they are embraced by cheering crowds and become celebrated and sought after.” One of the ways we combat global anti-Blackness is to name it, then claim it, then dismantle it. Too many white allies are reluctant to discuss anti-Blackness, much less work to dismantle it. Too many squirm when anti-Black racism is mentioned. It’s too much for some to discuss in “polite society” but not too much to practice. One of the most uncomfortable conversations comes when our “allies,” the Latinx folks eager to tout “Black and Brown” coalitions when it strengthens their base, are far less willing to combat the cracks in the foundation of the base. Our Latinx allies must condemn folks like Nury (and some have), whose spoken anti-Blackness (she called a Black child a monkey!) is only dwarfed by the things they do, not just the things they say. Global anti-Blackness stops when people of conscience, regardless of political party, call people out. Until then, the Nurys of the world, whether in elective office or not, win because Hydra’s head will multiply unless it is burned off. It’s in their nature like the scorpion WAKE UP AND STAY WOKE DR. E. FAYE WILLIAMS, ESQ.
In this campaign season, I am reminded of the fable of the scorpion and the frog. For those unfamiliar, a scorpion asks a frog to carry him across a river on his back. The frog fears being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, both would sink and drown. The frog agrees, but midway the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. Before they drowned, the frog laments the treachery and asks why. The scorpion said, “You know who I am! It’s just in my nature.” One of Maya Angelou’s most famous quotes is, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” As Republicans anxiously prepare to regain control of Congress, voters of sound mind and good conscience should consider what a Republican majority in even one of the two houses would mean. From my vantage, I can only predict turmoil and misfortune. Hopefully, better voter judgment and choices will prevail. For years, the Republican Party has shown that its primary concern is in the interests of the privileged, wealthy, big business, and, under any and every circumstance, the raw excess of reNovember 4, 2022
taining power and control. Its acceptance and defense of the criminal excesses of the disgraced, twice-impeached ex-president is itself criminal, and disrupts the design of social equilibrium inherent in a system of democracy. Moreover, those who support the criminality increasingly accept its profitability and enhancements as perks to which they are also entitled. The political threat Violating Constitutional emolument provisions, The
this tax revenue, prominent Republican Senators are proposing to require reauthorization of the Social Security System every five years. Even more radically, Johnson of Wisconsin advocates an annual reauthorization. Republicans have already promised to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. This would end the infrastructure construction/revitalization provisions of the act, as well as the provisions protecting consumers from the burdensome

Trump properties became a hub for foreign influence and resulted in a source of personal enrichment. Taking a cue from their leader, the current threat to our futures comes from the Republican Congress. excesses of pharmaceutical purchases. This course of action would mean that caps on out-ofpocket expenses for medical treatment and $35 per month cap on Insulin would disappear. The cultural threat The Republican success in the coming election not only poses a physical threat to the underserved and people of color, but it also threatens the psyche, self-esteem, and critical thinking skills of generations of our children. We have already witnessed a revisionist white washing of ethnic history in public schools to appease
those made uncomfortable about the truth of our nation’s history. They would have you erase the truth of the historical brutality of human enslavement, the slaughter of Native Americans, the immigration exclusion of Asians, the generalized “Otherization” of people of color, and the continuing legacy of hatred spawned by these acts. Like Nazi Germany, book-banning is becoming increasingly popular, and humans of all ages are shamed and victimized for their gender orientation. In the face of increasing violence, Republicans have pledged to protect unfettered access to guns. They have stripped the right of women to make independent reproductive health decisions. Like the scorpion, Republicans have shown their true colors. They have announced their intentions, --intentions which can only have a malevolent impact upon those they consider dispensable. It’s in their nature! Will intelligent voters choose to yield to the Republican “nature” or will they vote to protect our collective futures. Dr. E. Coco Gauff In D/FW Metroplex for Women’s Tennis Association Finals By Dorothy J. Gentry Sports Editor
Tennis sensation Coco Gauff is living the dream as a professional tennis player. Being an inspiration is her personal dream. “My personal dream, I mean, it’s just to inspire people just to do anything, not tennis, per se, but just inspire them to know that every day, you have a chance to be a better version of yourself,” said Gauff. “Life is ups and downs. And I think for me, I want to remind people that, your progress and your journey to your goal is not going to be linear, you’re going to go down for a bit. “But as long as you’re looking forward to going up, it will happen,” she said Gauff made the remarks Thursday to media shortly after arriving in Fort Worth for the 2022 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Finals Tournament which began play at Dickie’s Arena on Monday Oct. 31 and runs through Nov. 7th. The 18-year-old (and 239 days) will make her debut appearance at the prestigious season-ending tournament. She is the youngest player to compete at the season finale since 2005 when Maria Sharapova reached the semifinals aged 18 and 208 days. Gauff will also be the youngest American to contest the event since Lindsay Davenport’s runner-up finish in 1994 (aged 18 years and 165 days). Gauff will compete in both the singles and the doubles (with partner Pegula) November 4, 2022
categories. She and Pegula will be the first Americans to feature at the WTA Finals in both singles and doubles since Serena and Venus Williams in 2009. The WTA Finals is the last WTA competition of the year and is reserved for the top 8 singles players and doubles teams in the world, based on their 2022 rankings. Coco is one of a few players who will play in both doubles and singles.
out a lot on the court and, you know, battling your inner thoughts and yourself, but also doubles, it provides a more relaxed environment.” Gauff said playing doubles also helps when things go awry during the singles matches. “I honestly think I probably wouldn’t have survived this year if I didn’t play doubles because it’s just…when you lose the singles match it’s something about coming back

Texas Metro News asked her which category she prefers, doubles or singles. “I prepare (for each) completely different. I would say, I like singles a little bit more. But also at the same time, I love doubles. Like, like they’re really close to each other,” she said. “I just love tennis in general. So, I love being on the court. “However, there’s something about (playing) singles. Me personally, I’m a very independent person, I like to be alone, to be honest, as a kid, that’s why I gravitated towards it,” Gauff continued. “So I like that aspect of figuring things

out on the court and try to fight to win doubles,” she said. “And I think it helps me mentally a lot because sometimes, you know, when you lose, you just want to leave and go to the hotel and go home. “But I think doubles has helped me mentally become stronger, because I have to push away those emotions that I’m feeling for singles to focus on trying to win the doubles match. So I like both pretty much almost equally, but singles just a little bit more, because that’s just how I started.” Gauff calls her parents and

grandfather are her biggest influences personally and professionally. “I mean they (my parents) know me probably better than anyone, sometimes better than myself. And I say my grandfather, because he’s very, anybody knows him, he’s very by the book, very professional type of guy, gives it his all, but he also has a rough side. And I think that just describes me perfectly.” Gauff has enjoyed a phenomenal year on the Hologic WTA Tour to secure her debut singles qualification, reaching her first Grand Slam singles final at Roland-Garros and two further semifinals at the WTA 250 Adelaide International and WTA 500 Bett1Open (Berlin). She boosted her qualification hopes further by reaching the last eight at the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open (Doha) followed by a strong summer with quarterfinal runs at the WTA 500 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic (San Jose), WTA 1000 National Bank Open presented by Rogers (Toronto), the US Open and WTA 500 San Diego Open. Her last eight appearance in New York in September propelled her into the Top 10 for the first time in her career, and she peaked in the rankings at No.7 on October 17. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women’s professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women’s tennis. myimessenger.com
