Michael said the “White Only” sign had nothing to do with reality.

White Water is the story of a 7-year-old Black child in segregated 1963 Opelika, AL, who becomes obsessed with the desire to taste the water from the “white’s only” drinking fountain and sets out on a quest to do the un thinkable: drink from it.

We need to do like the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey urged, “fall in love with ourselves and our peo ple,” then we won’t think that everything from or by someone else is better than that coming from or made by someone who looks like us.

Michael drinks from “White Only” Fountain

Some thought that was a powerful statement because in essence, I was saying that no one else’s ice is colder.

Recently during a speech, I praised the Black Press:

From that point on, Mi chael wanted to taste the white water.

Michael drank from the “Colored” fountain, his young white “friend” drank from the “White Only” one.

Yep, Michael drank from the white only fountain and immediately said, “Tasted like the same rusty, hot wa ter from our fountain.”

For some reason, or at least from his observation, Michael surmised that the water had to be different because his friend seemed to be enjoying the water so much more than he was.

Seek God’s kingdom first. When you take care of God’s business, God takes care of yours. Sometimes, we forget that our purpose isn’t just about us. It’s so much big ger and it’s always connect ed to others through God’s plan for our lives. Matthew 6:31–34 (NIV) tells us “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or “What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

• Three quarters of minori ty beneficiaries rely on Social Security for at least half of their retirement in come. That’s true for only half of whites.

• A third of Black Social Se curity recipients depend on Social Security for all of their income, compared to 16 percent of whites. Keep in mind that the av erage Social Security check in 2022 is only $1,614.

The point is that you have options - if you think about retirement when you are still young enough to make a difference in your future. Or you can sit back and wait for Social Security to kick in. But that may mean a dra matic reduction in your life style or being forced to work into your 70s or 80s.

If you wait until 70 you can increase your benefits an other 30 percent.

Still, there are steps you can take to make sure you are not entirely depen dent on that Social Security check when you retire.

Wage disparities. Black Americans are locked into low-paying service jobs, and your Social Security check depends on the amount you pay into the system. On average, Black Americans earn about half as much as

White Americans. But when it comes to Social Security, the more money you make, and the more you put into the system, the higher your monthly check when you retire. Low wage earners put less into the system and are stuck with considerably lower Social Security bene fits as a result.

If nothing else, these numbers should point out that before deciding on So cial Security, you must have a plan. Here’s the basics. The ear liest you qualify for Social Security is 62, and 37 per cent people take it at that age. The problem is that by taking it early, instead of

1. 401(k). Company pen sions are pretty much gone. Instead, companies off employees self-direct ed defined contribution plans like 401(k)s and 403(b). The problem is too many people say they can’t afford to save and don’t contribute. If your employer offers at 401(k) or 403(b), utilize it. Find the money, even if it’s $25 or $50 a month. The mon ey adds up. And if there is an employee match, you should contribute at least up to that match. Other wise, you are passing up free money.

But let’s not kid ourselves. There is a reason most Black Americans take Social Se curity early and lock them selves into those lower pay ments for life.

Deciding when to take So cial Security is a huge issue, and a very complicated one. A wrong decision can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime. 4. Reverse mortgage. I’m not a big fan of reverse mortgages, unless there is no other option. Con sidering the dire state of Black homeownership, we want to leave a legacy for our heirs. But if there is no other option, a person can tap into the equity in their homes and receive payments until they die. Then, generally the house is sold and whatever equi ty is left goes to your heirs. Before you do a reverse mortgage, make sure you get some financial advice from a pro.

Health disparities. Black Americans suffer higher rates of eight of the top 13 top causes of death in the United States – heart dis ease, stroke, cancer, influ enza and pneumonia, dia betes, HIV disease, kidney failure and homicide, said Dr. Ebony Hilton, anesthe siologist at the University of Virginia in Charlottes ville, Virginia. They often are forced to retire early for health reasons – either their own issues or to take care of a loved one with health issues. This is especially true of Black women, who are more much more likely to be caregivers than Black men, and also more likely to be the lone caregiver.

Officials aim to save lives, reduce stressors and improve policing

Since the network’s creation in Jan uary 2022, 325 peers across the state have been trained and registered.

The TLEPN was established in 2021 by the Texas Legislature, in response to a rising number of officers dying by suicide. In 2019, the number of officers in the United States who died by suicide was nearly double the number killed in the line of duty.

“Time and time again, the greatest barrier to help has been the stigma of job loss and the negative connotation of someone finding out that you need help. Our program is protected by law and offers an anonymous way to vent and discuss the hardships encountered,” said Schellenger. “The anonymity is a cornerstone of how we teach and pre pare peers to help one another. We will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of the officers of this state one step at aUNTtime.”Dallas President Bob Mong said, “UNT Dallas is proud to join others in this important effort to reduce first re sponder suicides. We will not look away, we will act.”

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, UNT Dallas Caruth Police Institute Vice Chair Zachary Flores, State Senator Royce West, TLEPN State Director Dustin Schel lenger, and University of North Texas at Dallas President Bob Mong spoke at the event.Senator Royce West said, “Our of ficers routinely witness firsthand our society’s most tragic events and most heinous acts. I am grateful that this resource is now available to them and proud to have co-authored the bill that created it.”

“The Caruth Police Institute’s Exec utive Advisory Board envisioned the Texas Law Enforcement Peer Network as a resource for law enforcement offi cers across the State who have nowhere else to turn for help,” said Flores. “With the support of our Governor and the Legislature, we have now launched the Network and can see the positive impact it is having on our profession. We know the Network will save lives and will en able our officers to remain healthy and productive throughout their careers.”

First of its kind in the country, the Peer Network is a statewide program de signed to give every Texas law enforce ment officer access to a trained peer to address stressors, trauma, fatigue, and other needs to combat workforce burn out and end police suicide and self-harm.

There have been 424 potential law enforcement users that have created an account, and the network has been utilized 44 times.

In conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Week, officials from law enforcement, the Texas Legislature and the UNT Dallas Caruth Police Institute gathered last week to raise awareness of the Texas Law Enforcement Peer Net work (TLEPN), an innovative, potentially life-saving resource that is available to Texas’ law enforcement officers.

“critical race theory,” a legal concept rarely injected into k-12 education but feared by those who also fear the truth about the flawed foundations of our nation. Other states have forbidden teaching about race or concepts that make students “uncomfort able.” In Colleyville, Texas, a Black principal of a majority white high school was forced to resign because of disputes about critical race theory. This contributes to the teacher shortage, which The Economist magazine de scribes as “neither new nor national.” Indeed, for the past several years, each fall has seen widely publicized scarcity in some areas. There has always been a shortage of teachers in inner-city schools, many forced to use substitute teachers when they can’t find permanent staff.

Who wants to teach in an environment taken over by conservative truth-deniers who don’t want to have stu dents learn about enslave ment, the unequal treatment of women, or the invisibility of LGBTQ folks? Addressing these issues is not political; it’s factual., but the conser vative presence on school boards has made the class room increasingly uncom fortable for many teachers.

This year, Texas has about a thousand vacancies. In Mary land, 5500 teachers left the profession. Nevada schools opened on August 8 short 1400 teachers. The federal Department of Education has issued a fact sheet factsheets/teacher-shortage)www.ed.gov/coronavirus/(https://

This August, you can’t turn on a television or open a newspaper without reading or hearing about the teacher shortage. And it is clear that current shortages are being highly publicized and politi cized, with reasons for short ages ranging from low pay to teacher burnout, to teacher dissatisfaction, to COVID, and the aging of the teach er workforce. Some teachers talk about classroom condi tions, a decline in respect for teachers, or the challenges of dealing with unruly students with little administrative sup port. Others are frustrated by the presence of so-called “law enforcement” officers in schools and the ways these officers treat Black and Brown students differently than others. There is a crisis in educa tion, and the teacher shortage is one manifestation of the many ways that teachers and students are devalued as “ed ucators” pursue a false and degrading narrative. If edu cation were more reflective of reality, people would flock to classrooms instead of fleeing from the frustration of being forced to embrace a curricu lum that distorts the truth.

detailing responses to the teacher shortage, including innovative ways to recruit and supportAbsentteachers.frommuch of this discussion is the attack on Black teachers and the ex treme shortage of Black teach ers in many inner city school districts where most students are African American. Data on the differential discipline for Black students, which includes disproportionate suspensions and expulsions, reflect the cultural biases that too many white teachers bring to the classroom. The educational achievement gap is partly a function of how academic hi erarchies discriminate against Black students and teachers.

In addressing the so-called teacher shortage, it is essen tial to consider the purpose of education and the fact that too often, students are be ing taught to go along with a structure that oppresses them. Education is often a political tool to force assimi lation. Consider how Indian boarding schools were often violently forced to abandon their Indian and Indigenous identities to access education.

as a Black kid under “separate but equal” laws that were anything but equal. My peers and I had to hear and experience the tough lessons of a society that treated us differently. Yet I believe we were made stronger because of those experiences. We heard about mobs and the KKK lynching Black men with out a trial — including the 1910 Allen Brooks lynching from the downtown Elks Arch in Dallas where I still live — and the hateful and still painfully memorable murders of mainly Black males, such as Emmett Till and Medgar Evers nearly a decade apart in Mississip pi.My childhood peers and I lived with knowing that we could not try on clothes in downtown Dallas retail stores or drink from cer tain water fountains la beled “Whites Only.” Con versely, we were not taught that when the Fourth of

Many of the main eight concepts of your “Stop WOKE Act” sound reason able enough. Yet, in your public comments, you speak against conditions that you have described as “revisionist history” and “woke indoctrination.” Could it be that these re visions are simply telling more truth? I take your use of “revisionist” to mean that it is wrong to revise American history that was taught to me as a youth. Also, that indoctrination only is wrong now and not when I experienced it many moons ago.

My school books, Gover nor, were hand-me-downs from the Dallas white schools. Some pages were torn out, and the tattered ones that remained often were filled with graffiti and someone else’s notes in the margins. Still, many of my peers and I went to college and thrived. As students, we were not given blind folds to protect us from seeing the realities of life.

So why is “being woke” such a terrible thing? As I see it, being woke is simply looking truth in the face and walking away more informed; and yes, free to

make your own final judg ment. Indoctrination, as I see it, is knowing that his torical “facts” in textbooks — more likely than not — have some history writer’s interpretation woven in. Yes, Rufo’s research does reasonably suggest that some educators’ and em ployers’ critical race theory and 1619 Project interpre tations are extreme and

Since 1995, DART and Parkland Hospital have had an ongoing partnership to provide shuttle services to rail stations and transit centers adjacent to the Parkland campus to serve patients, staff, and visitors. For a variety of reasons—including shifting of employee locations during the pandemic plus related construction issues—Parkland has chosen to discontinue funding for Routes 434 and 435.

I didn’t know that I was an ESG company – environmentally and socially conscious when I started. I was always interested in investing in things that impacted the communi ty, impacted the family, and had a chance to make sure there was some legacy coming behind. My eco nomics teacher told me to invest in things that I like. So, one of the first investments was popcorn because it was a staple in my home. No one is expecting Rush to rush out and pick up where he left off against the Vikings. Particularly since Prescott had unimaginable struggles against the Bucs while working with a revamped offensive line and a group of young receivers.

Two years ago when Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury, the Cowboys posted a 4-7 record the rest of that season and missed the playoffs. But coach Mike McCarthy doesn’t want his team over-reacted to another serious injury by Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) looks at his throwing hand after hitting it on Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett’s hand as he released a pass during the fourth quarter of their season opener at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, September 11, 2022. Prescott left the game. The Cowboys lost, 19-3.

Prescott injured his thumb in the fourth quarter of this past Sunday’s season-opening 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His injury sent shock waves throughout Cowboys Nation, with some fans fearing the season was already a loss cause before it could get off the ground.

“We’ll have to have Cooper step up. He’ll be getting all the reps and we’ll go from there.”

“He’s really smart,” offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said of Rush. “He has a great ability to process defenses very quickly and get the ball out of his hands.

Cowboys quarterback’s injury may not be as bad as previously thought HOPE FOR PRESCOTT

Rush is steadfastly ready for the tall task ahead.“You’ve got to make things click as if (Prescott) was in there,” he said. “We’ll draw on that experience last year big-time.

“We knew that we were going to have chal lenges. You can’t get to where you want to go without them, and we had a bunch in week one.”Jones is just hopeful that his timetable for Prescott’s return will ring true.

“If we thought he wasn’t going to be ready to go until after four games, we would put him on IR (injured reserve),” Jones told The Fan. “We’re not doing that.

It was a start that turned out to be a punch in the gut for the Cowboys.

Prescott had surgery Monday on his injured right thumb and was told by doctors that he will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. But on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, owner Jerry Jones said not so fast.

The Cowboys, who host the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, are hoping for some similar magic from Rush un til Prescott returns.

“We think he can come in and play, so we don’t want to not have him out there practic ing. We want him getting prepared and we’ll see how he handles this thing, how it heals –mainly his strength.”

“Let’s not hit the panic (button) as if we just can’t do anything on offense,” Prescott said. “The coaching staff will find the best position and best spot to put Cooper Rush in each and everyJonesgame.”said the Cowboys would not rush out and acquire another quarterback while Prescott is on the mend. “How he can grip the ball (will primarily decide) what his status is,” Jones said. “The proof is that we got a good surgery, got good technique and feel better about it than we did Sunday night.”

Cooper Rush will step in and fill the void vacated by Prescott. And his job is to jumpstart a Cowboys team which was the only one in the NFL team that didn’t score a touch down during the season’s first week.

“I’ll just say this: Stick to the journey,” Mc Carthy said. “Our theme this year is resilience.

In all, Prescott had one of his worst games ever as he completed just 14 passes in 29 attempts for 134 yards and an interception against Tampa Bay. And as he reflects on the immediate future, Prescott said, “Obviously, I’m going to miss some time and not be there for my team. And that’s what hurts more than anything, especially after the start that we just put out there.”

By Jones’ calculation, the Cowboys won’t put Prescott on the injured reserve list. He added that his star quarterback could invari ably return to the lineup as soon as the Oct. 9 game against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
