VOTE YES FOR PROP A Advocacy Campaign Rally Held
Wednesday morning, I was a guest on a show talking about voting and how we can get folks to the polls.
Prior to the show, I was thinking about what the heck I was going to talk about. What could I say that would be considered as intelligent, thought-provoking, profound and actually having an impact on potential voters?
I knew that host Stacy Brown, of Let it Be Known, the show representing the Black Press of America, would be addressing the key issues and races across the country. I just wondered what could possibly be said that would make folks rush to the polls like in the movie, Head of State, featuring comedians Chris Rock and the late, great Bernie Mac.
In the scene, reporters an nounced that the polls were closed on the East Coast and there was a chance that a Black man could become president. Next thing you know the cam era switches to scores of white people running from their homes to the polls.
Oh if there is something we could say or do to get that re sponse from our audiences! Which brings me to my truth.
I am going to be on the phone every day for the next week. I am going to call people I know and ask them to get up and go vote. Every conversa tion that I have with anyone is going to include some dia logue about voting.
This is the least I can do.

Public urged to donate to new SMU Human Rights Scholarship honoring Thomas Muhammad
By Norma Adams-WadeSometime before he joined the ancestors in August this year, the late Thomas Muhammad had said he expected his legacy to be a film he conceived and co-produced about the life of Malcolm X, his personal warrior also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz.
The 2017 film – Malcolm X: An Overwhelming influence on the Black Power Movement -- is, indeed, a permanent feather in his cap. But Muhammad’s friends and admirers have decided to take his legacy a step further.

The ballot measure known as Proposition A asks citizens to vote FOR a 2% increase in the Hotel
Occupancy Tax, which is paid by overnight visitors to Dallas hotels and motels. Known as the “tourist tax,” it will repay the bonds for the renovations. This means no in crease in property or sales tax for Dallas residents will occur.

By Dorothy J. Gentry Sports EditorTennis sensation Coco Gauff is living the dream as a professional tennis player. Being an inspiration is her personal dream.
“My personal dream, I mean, it's just to inspire people just to do anything, not tennis, per se, but just inspire them to know that every day, you have a chance to be a better version of yourself,” said Gauff. “Life is ups and downs. And I think for me, I want to remind people that, your progress and your journey to your goal is not going to be linear, you're going to go down for a bit.

I WAS JUST THINKING...
It’s that time of year again
MY TRUTH
Human Rights Scholarship cont. from page 1
At a tribute Saturday, October 29, commemorating his brimming life of servant, his friends and admirers announced the Thomas Muhammad Human Rights Scholarship that has been launched at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
“I wish we could name a building or school after Thomas,” said Imam Emeritus Khalid Shaheed, who retired in 2020 after nearly 20 years of service at Masjid AlIslam south of Downtown.
I was just thinking…, for someone to have the distinction of a scholarship named in their honor, it’s logical that that person would have lived an exceptional life. Comments speakers made about Muhammad bear that out:
• Bob Ray Sanders: “This community is indebted to Thomas. He understood power. He wasn’t afraid of people in power. He could not be bamboozled. Up until the day he died, he was fighting.”
• Dr. Frederick Haynes III: Quoting rapper Drake’s lyrics, Haynes said of Muhammad: “Thomas was always down for the cause, never down for the count.”
Moving Into the Future
Dear Dallas County,
We are at a crossroads. As you know, I am Faith Johnson and I am running for Dallas County District Attorney against the current District Attorney John Creuzot.
tough decisions or if they are incompetent. Lack of courage, incompetence, ignorance, apathy, and even corruption all yield the same thing: toxic environments for the staff and The People. It is time for change in Dal las County leadership.
This is serious stuff and we are in desper ate times. I am not only asking for your vote on November 8th but I am also asking you to share my story with your friends, family, and neighbors.
Police chief Eddie Garcia was recently quoted as saying:
The Imam was among more than a dozen friends, relatives and admirers who spoke at the tribute at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) in downtown Dallas.
• Dr. Teresa Jackson: She said Muhammad’s transition left a void, but others must carry on for him. “ A void leaves an empty space. But let’s not focus on the emptiness left behind. Let’s fill it.”
• Akwete Tyehimba: “Thomas was always aspiring to be impactful…He heart was always in the right place.”
Thomas Muhammad
But while the public is thinking of other ways to continue Muhammad’s legacy, Shaheed and other leaders are urging the public to support the new scholarship that will help finance the education of SMU students majoring in human rights – a cause into which Muhammad poured his heart and passion. Creators of the scholarship say it will help educate students about all aspects of human rights so that they may continue the work Muhammad deeply treasured.
Among others who helped organize the commemorative program for Muhammad and who urged the public to help contribute to the scholarship were former Dallas city council member and deputy mayor pro-tem Diane Ragsdale, TBAAL founder and president Curtis King, and broadcast and print media veteran Bob Ray Sanders.
Organizers say $100,000 is needed to endow the scholarship that will be awarded to selected students whose families earn $50,000 or less. All donated funds go to SMU to maintain the scholarship. To learn more and contribute to the scholarship, email Imam Emeritus Khalid Shaheed at 469-766-2208 or email rizak1@mmsn.com

• Jorge Baldor: “I miss my friend Thomas. He left the world a little better than he found it.”
• Kofi Taharka with National Black United Front-Houston Chapter: Said he met Muhammad in Jasper. Texas while protesting the heinous 1998 dragging murder of James Byrd Jr. “When I describe Brother Thomas, I must use the word ‘Class’.”
• Dominique Alexander: Said once when he was discouraged, he considered shutting down Next Generation Action Network that he founded. But Muhammad -- his mentor who called him ‘Young Blood’ -- encouraged him. “He said, ‘No. You can’t do that.’ I loved and admired Thomas.”
• Jackie Mixon: “Thomas always said, ‘Somebody’s got to stand. He was our warrior for justice.”
• Vincent Hall: “We were pen pals who wrote newspaper articles about issues. Thomas about changing policies (to fix problems.) That’s what he did probably better than anybody else.”
• John Fullinwider: “Thomas was an activist for all seasons. He was my friend and counsel.”
• A. Peter Bailey: “This brother made a major contribution… His film about Malcolm X is a must-see for everybody.”
• Rev. Zan Wesley Holmes: “He was a great friend who called me Pastor…I’m grateful that part of his film was recorded at St. Luke (Community United Methodist Church), showing our image of Malcolm X in one of our stained-glass windows.”
• Cheryl Smith: “He loved showing appreciation for his friends…I was selected as one (that he honored).”
• Norma Adams-Wade: “For us in media, Thomas was our town crier as well as our Griot.”
• Diane Ragsdale: “One of Thomas’ primary goals was to create better relationships between Muslims and the African-American community. He sought to prevent people viewing Muslims as terrorists.”
• Curtis King: Not everyone knew that “Thomas was a lover of the arts…He is one of persons responsible for us being (in this building) on this corner.”
Thomas Muhammad did, indeed, leave the world a better place than he found it.
I am sure you recently heard of the gut-wrenching news of an open shooter at Methodist Hospital in the maternity ward of all places. A place that is to represent the joy of new life entering our county, a place for new mothers to heal and restore after 9 months of housing a human in her own body, and a place for families to gather to celebrate new life. And then there are the nurses, doctors, and hospital staff who give their lives to serving others, often into the wee hours of the night and often at the ex pense of their own families and lives to help, save, & serve others.
What is Good for Dallas County
The least we can do is provide them safe places to do what they are gifted and trained to do. The saddest part is that this is not the only incident of this kind—violet crime like this is happening all over our county. Some will say that statistics show crime is down. However, statistics do not mean squat when a proven violent criminal walks into a hospi tal and opens fire killing two people.
Like so many, I am sickened and sad dened by the constant shape shifting and blame game of our leaders. Here is the bottom-line truth: it is up to the leaders of this county to get together, collaborate, and execute on proven procedures and protocols that keep the people safe and violet crimi nals off the street as much as at all possible.
It is simple. It is not as complicated as some would have us believe. The truth is that the policies of our top county leaders are either knowingly or unknowingly breed ing violent crime and vagrancy and The Peo ple are suffering for it. It is time for smart on crime policies and true execution of those policies.
It does not matter if our leaders are good people, simply lacking courage to make
“Our hearts @DallasPD go out to the those affected by this tragedy, I’m outraged along with our community, at the lack of ac countability, and the travesty of the fact that under this broken system, we give violent criminals more chances, than our victims. The pendulum has swung too far.”
Our law enforcement is hurting and needs our help. Our county and municipal employees are hurting and need our help. The citizens of this county are hurting and need our help.
How can we help? By voting into leader ship a competent, strong, courageous leader that answers to only God Himself, the oath of office, The People, and the Constitution of the United States, designed to PROTECT & PRESERVE the God given rights of all citizens of this great land.
While my heart is so heavy with senseless tragedies that absolutely can be prevented, I am also so very grateful for the people of this county. As I walk into my final week of campaigning and I reflect on the countless volunteers who have given so much of their time and their heart to support me and all the people I have met knocking on doors, my heart longs to protect this county and her people.
With the right team in place, we can absolutely change the course of the entire county for generations. Even small shifts in the rudder of a large ship can change the trajectory of the whole ship. NOW is the time. We cannot afford one more day with the current leadership. Dallas deserves better.

Anxiety? – It’s Gon Be OK!
graphed dancer and model. She graduated this year, from Texas Southern University!
By Vincent L. HallThey keep sayin' I should get help But I don't even know what I need They keep sayin' speak your truth And at the same time, say they don't believe!
Megan The Stallion is official ly one of mine. Now I have four daughters. Megan continues to flash the level of intelligence, insight, and intrigue that I love to see in entertainers.
"Anxiety," one of her newest drops, hits home with those who understand what Gen Z’ers live through. Underneath the surface, this generation is burdened with thoughts of in adequacy and confusion. They don't use the victim card, but they feel the world's weight on their shoulders.
Megan Jovon Ruth Pete is a native Texan according to the thumbnail bio in IMDb.
“Megan Thee Stallion was born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Houston. The se ductive femcee was a full-time college student and a choreo
Under her mother's manage ment company, Pretty Time En tertainment Management, she gained notoriety after meeting super producer TA and releas ing her first single, "Like a Stal lion," in April 2016.
After dropping several hot verses on a few Texas Cyphers, her verse on 'The Houston Cy pher' over Drake's 4PM in Cala basas placed her as a top trend ing topic in Houston on Twitter. Soon after, she released her mixtape 'Rich Ratchet' and then her first EP "Make It Hot" soon followed.”
You would think Megan had it all. But as you listen to Anxiety, you sense that success is not synonymous with peace and tranquility. Like all of us, Gen Z must deal with fears, insecuri ties, and "Bad days!"
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Bad bitches have bad days too Friday, Saturday, Sunday, bounce back How a bad bitch always do!
Everybody has bad days, but our own bad days seem the worst. An article published by “Health Match” this past September carried a somber headline. “The Gen Z Mental
Health wave - what is causing the surge?” Look at the litany of concerns.
Gen Z'ers are more likely than previous generations to report mental health concerns, be aware of racial inequality, be racially and ethnically diverse, and be immigrants' children. They are also more socially progressive (comfortable using gender-neutral pronouns and support same-sex marriage). “
The “norms” we accepted were not complex or far-reach ing. Our worlds were Black and White. Their worlds are global and much more demanding. Gen Z’ers take social respon sibility seriously, and COVID heightened their anxieties ex ponentially.
“The American Psychological
Association (APA) reports that 90% of Gen Z experienced psy chological or physical symp toms due to stress in the last year. At the same time, 70% of Gen Z say that Anxiety and de pression are significant prob lems among their peers.
Even 30% of parents surveyed felt that their child was experi encing negative effects on their emotional or mental health due to social distancing and school closures.
Additionally, McKinsey In sights notes that 25% of Gen Z report experiencing emotion al distress—nearly double the levels reported by older gener ations During the pandemic, those between 20–24 years old showed the biggest leaps in anxiety.”
The takeaway Megan pro vides is as simple as it is per plexing. All she wants to hear is that she will be OK.
Check on your Gen Z family and try to see life as they do. Talk and text them regularly. And please, quit interjecting all of your self-righteous biases and Bull$h!t!
If I could write a letter to Heaven
I would tell my mama that I shoulda been listenin'
And I would tell her sorry that I really been wildin'
And ask her to forgive me, 'cause I really been tryin'!
Megan’s mother died of brain cancer in 2019, but she left her some advice; “Don’t Stop!” Megan ends this missive with equal portions of misery, reality and hope.
All I really wanna hear is, "It'll be okay" Bounce back 'cause a bad bitch can have bad days!
Quit Playin' like our 15-25’s don't have apprehensions. Talk to your children, but don’t lie. Gen Z’ers have anxiety but are honest and can detect a lie be fore it leaves your lips!
Love you Megan, and It really is gon be OK!

The Black Press believes that America can best lead the world away from racial and national antagonisms when it accords to every person, regardless of race, color or creed, full human and legal rights. This week we have new numbers suggesting that the homeless population is grow ing in spite of efforts to make more housing available. This is in spite of efforts that are un derway to open more shelters. There is discussion about the growing numbers of homeless without talking about why and how. The numbers are growing because of two reasons: (1) the increasing high cost of rentals with no real controls on land lords or what they charge; and (2) the rising cost of living out pacing minimum wages.
In a county with a popula tion of 49 percent renters, one would think there would be a real effort to get the homeless registered as voters to partici pate in the coming election. The reality is that every day we see more and more high-rise apart ment buildings going up as apartments and condos. Yet we

Until renters become voters, one can not expect to see real efforts to move more homeless into existing vacancies. The va cancies are not created for the

The point here is that those who vote can influence the policies and actions of those elected to office as well as those who sit as judges on landlord
homeless, but for those who can afford the high cost of occu pancy. “Affordable” housing is, too often, a diversionary carrot to have both the public and the homeless focus on anything ex cept existing vacancies.
A recent report on homeless
ness among Black San Diegans details a number of historical factors influencing homeless ness. And it is not all about drugs and mental illness. However, the changes and recommen dations detailed in that report appear to provide a pathway to change. But those changes do not include developing the kind of civic responsibility that could lead the homeless to becoming voters and therefore taking long term steps to not only improve their personal condition, but also the quality of life for those who will follow them, unless some real public policies are made by those who are voted into office.
Perhaps all of this is too late for November 8th participation, but let’s think about it anyway.

FAITHFUL UTTERANCES
By Dr. Froswa' Booker-DrewThe problem is getting worse and debating over guns hasn’t made a difference. 21-year-old Asia Womack was murdered by a male friend in Dallas because she beat him in a basketball game. "But this is so senseless," said Pastor John Delley. "You become embarrassed basically because a female beat you in basketball." According to the family, the shooter took his kids and brother home and came back to the park, shooting Asia five times.
30-year-old Nestor Hernan dez was in Dallas Methodist Hospital’s labor and delivery area about 10:20 a.m. on Sat urday, October 22. That's when Hernandez entered the hospi tal room where his girlfriend
had given birth the day before. While in the room with his girl friend and newborn child, Her nandez began to act strangely and accused his girlfriend of cheating on him, according to documents. Two hospital em ployees were shot and killed by Hernandez as they entered the room to do their job.
Both of these men are not the exception. There are countless incidents that we can all refer ence that point to the increase of mass shootings and domestic abuse. Much of this is steeped in a warped view of manhood. I must admit that I’m blessed to know some amazing men who defy what we see in the news.
Yet, we must acknowledge that there is a problem and quite often, it starts in the home.
It’s how we are taught to think about what makes one mascu line and often, it’s a view that includes power, violence, and dominance. According to the New York Times, “toxic mascu linity,” or “traditional mascu
linity ideology,” is defined it, in part, as a set of behaviors and beliefs that include the follow ing:
• Suppressing emotions or masking distress
• Maintaining an appear ance of hardness
• Violence as an indicator of power (think: “tough-guy” behavior)
Please know that it doesn’t mean that all men are inher ently toxic. I want to make sure that we also understand that there are women with anger is sues who attack and fight men--all of it is a problem.
I’ve discovered that many of us are struggling because we do not have an emotional vo cabulary. We go from 0 to 100 because we don’t understand our feelings. We often mistak en anger for betrayal, disap pointment or neglect. We don’t take the time to process how we feel and move from feelings to reacting often negatively, ignoring the consequences of
our behavior. It’s critical that we normalize therapy. People need help!
It’s important that we un derstand the magnitude of this issue. Our views of both wom en and men are limiting. This perspective is a matter of life and death. PlanStreetInc states, “More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced either physical violence, rape, or stalking by an intimate part ner in their lifetime. Victims are commonly abused by those who are closest to them.” We’ve become desensitized and ac cepting of this behavior.
Something must change and soon.
It’s important to establish God views both men AND women as important:
• “So God created man in his own image, in the im age of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 ESV)
It’s also important that we recognize the value in one an other:
• “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more signifi
cant than yourselves.” (Phi lippians 2:3 ESV)
When we value others, we will treat others well. Unresolved anger is dangerous.
• “For the anger of man does not produce the righteous ness of God.” (James 1:20 ESV)
It’s also important to realize that the way we see others is tied to how we feel about ourselves. When we don’t see our own val ue and the way God sees us, it’s easier to dismiss and even hurt those closest to us.
The Bible gives us the knowl edge on doing things different ly:
• “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every per son be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19 ESV)
The solution can’t be legislat ed. It requires a change in our thinking and in our behavior.

It’s in their nature like the scorpion
conscience should consider what a Republican majority in even one of the two houses would mean.
By Dr. E. Faye WilliamsIn this campaign season, I am reminded of the fable of the scorpion and the frog. For those unfamiliar, a scorpion asks a frog to carry him across a river on his back.
The frog fears being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, both would sink and drown. The frog agrees, but midway the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. Before they drowned, the frog laments the treachery and asks why.
The scorpion said, “You know who I am! It’s just in my nature.”
One of Maya Angelou’s most famous quotes is, “When some one shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” As Republicans anxiously prepare to regain control of Congress, voters of sound mind and good
From my vantage, I can only predict turmoil and misfortune. Hopefully, better voter judg ment and choices will prevail.
For years, the Republican Party has shown that its primary concern is in the interests of the privileged, wealthy, big busi ness, and, under any and every circumstance, the raw excess of retaining power and control.
Its acceptance and defense of the criminal excesses of the disgraced, twice-impeached ex-president is itself criminal, and disrupts the design of so cial equilibrium inherent in a system of democracy.
Moreover, those who support the criminality increasingly accept its profitability and en hancements as perks to which they are also entitled.
The political threat
Violating Constitutional emolument provisions, The Trump Organization grossly overcharged the government
for services provided to Secret Service protective details for Trump and members of his family.
Trump properties became a hub for foreign influence and resulted in a source of personal enrichment.
Taking a cue from their lead er, the current threat to our fu tures comes from the Republi can Congress. While claiming alarm at the rising inflation, Republicans are planning to extend the $1.5 Trillion Trump Tax Cut to the benefit of the 1 percent.
In order to offset the loss of this tax revenue, prominent Re publican Senators are propos ing to require reauthorization of the Social Security System every five years. Even more radically, Johnson of Wisconsin advocates an annual reauthori zation.
Republicans have already promised to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. This would end the infrastructure construc tion/revitalization provisions of the act, as well as the provisions
protecting consumers from the burdensome excesses of phar maceutical purchases.
This course of action would mean that caps on out-of-pock et expenses for medical treat ment and $35 per month cap on Insulin would disappear.
The cultural threat
The Republican success in the coming election not only poses a physical threat to the underserved and people of col or, but it also threatens the psy che, self-esteem, and critical thinking skills of generations of our children. We have already witnessed a revisionist white washing of ethnic history in public schools to appease those made uncomfortable about the truth of our nation’s history.
They would have you erase the truth of the historical bru tality of human enslavement, the slaughter of Native Amer icans, the immigration exclu sion of Asians, the generalized “Otherization” of people of col or, and the continuing legacy of hatred spawned by these acts.
Like Nazi Germany,
book-banning is becoming increasingly popular, and hu mans of all ages are shamed and victimized for their gender orientation.
In the face of increasing vi olence, Republicans have pledged to protect unfettered access to guns.
They have stripped the right of women to make independent reproductive health decisions.
Like the scorpion, Republi cans have shown their true col ors.
They have announced their intentions, --intentions which can only have a malevolent im pact upon those they consider dispensable. It’s in their nature! Will intelligent voters choose to yield to the Republican “na ture” or will they vote to protect our collective futures.

Big Mama Said
By Terry AllenI told you many times over, Lucille “Big Mama" Allen would be trending over everybody else. Big Mama’s lessons are always appropriate for the time. The great thing about her wisdom is re-stated over and over again in others wherever I go.
Just recently, as I hosted In the Spirit Entertainment, Inc. Dal las Lit event, where I asked the panel a question made public ly known when Denzel Wash ington reacted to Will Smith after that famous slap and said to him, “When you are at your
highest, that is when the devil comes for you.”
Big Mama would offer an al ternative for Will she tell him to reach inside and remind him of Jeramiah 29:11; "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Big Mama knew The Bible showed a very direct route to your best self and your internal gift and the execution of your in tentional assignment.
Spiritual leader, Iyanla Van zant flips the statement and says, 'If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans.”
While we go about planning our days and lives, we some times learn that God or our high er power has another plan for us. It's a saying that resonates with
the year-plus lost to COVID and the ravages of the Pandemic.
This is also a quote from Woody Allen, I believe the orig inal is an old Yiddish proverb “We plan, God laughs.” But you get the idea. Every time I heard this sentence I would laugh; I could always relate to it but not as much as I do right now.
The meaning of this saying
struck me in a different way. It might mean that even with the best of plans, things can change with the blink of an eye due to an illness, injury, or even death. Now that I think about it, I see this quote as a message to be honest and realistic about our plans and goals. Make God Smile!
If You Want to Hear God Smile, Tell Him Your Plans VOTE LIKE OBAMA IS ON THE BALLOT!
I now tie this to those who cry out that our democracy is at stake but do nothing to elim inate the fear tactics and lies (also known as disinformation) like vote and enact laws and amendments. They outcry but they do not vote or bring others to the polls to protect democra cy and ensure fairness happens at the Ballot.
Citizens participate in the democratic process by voting. Leaders represent citizens' in
terests and represent their ideas, and citizens vote for them in elections. In addition to the right to vote, U.S. citizens have the right to run for office at the fed eral level.
So, if you want to sustain de mocracy, protect the ballot and hear God smile, then vote as if Obama is on the ballot. He won both his terms successfully so, in the spirit of “Big Mama” someone said, “Please vote like Obama is on the ballot.”
Will you take 5 people to the polls? If so, post it on so cial media and use the hashtag #Gimme5. Email your pictures to Terryallenpr@gmail.com

I have already voted.
Did I vote the entire ballot?
Yes, I did!
Was I challenged with some of the races where I had to make a choice? Sure was!
Were there some races where I wished the per son had a challenger?
Heck yes?
Did I write in names for
some races?
For the first time in ages, yes!
And sadly I chose whether or not to vote for some people who look like me but have not done much to make life better for people like me.
You get the picture? I need people to un derstand that voting is critical, that each vote
matters and can make the difference — just like a non-vote can do.
What we do today will have a definite impact on generations to come. We want them to be proud of us.
Not voting will do noth ing but embarrass them and they’ll be lying like other descendants who try to deny their history.
through Nov. 7th.
The 18-year-old (and 239 days) will make her debut appearance at the prestigious season-ending tournament. She is the youngest player to compete at the season finale since 2005 when Maria Sharapova reached the semifinals aged 18 and 208 days. Gauff will also be the youngest American to contest the event since Lindsay Davenport's runner-up finish in 1994 (aged 18 years and 165 days).
Gauff will compete in both the singles and the doubles (with partner Pegula) categories. She and Pegula will be the first Americans to feature at the WTA Finals in both singles and doubles since Serena and Venus Williams in 2009.
The WTA Finals is the last WTA competition of the year and is reserved for the top 8 singles players and doubles teams in the world, based on their 2022 rankings. Coco is one of a few players who will play in both doubles and singles.
Texas Metro News asked her which category she prefers, doubles or singles.
“I prepare (for each) completely different. I would say, I like singles a little bit more. But also at the same time, I love doubles. Like, like they're really close to each other,” she said. “I just love tennis in general. So, I love being on the court.
“However, there’s something about (playing) singles. Me personally, I'm a very independent person, I like to be alone, to be honest, as a kid, that's why I gravitated towards it,” Gauff continued. “So I like that aspect of figuring things out a lot on the court and, you know, battling your inner thoughts and yourself, but also doubles, it provides a more relaxed environment.”
Gauff said playing doubles also helps when things go awry during the singles matches. “I honestly think I probably wouldn't have survived this year if I didn't play doubles because it's just… when you lose the singles match it's something about coming back out on the court and try to fight to win doubles,” she said. “And I think it helps me mentally a lot because sometimes, you know, when you lose, you just want to leave and go to the hotel and go home.
“But I think doubles has helped me mentally become stronger, because I have to push away those emotions that I'm feeling for singles to focus on trying to win the doubles match. So I like both pretty much almost equally, but singles just a little bit more, because that's just how I started.”
Gauff calls her parents and grandfather are her biggest influences personally and professionally. “I mean they (my parents) know me probably better than anyone, sometimes better than myself. And I say my grandfather, because he's very, anybody knows him, he's very by the book, very professional type of guy, gives it his all, but he also has a rough side. And I think that just
describes me perfectly.”
Gauff has enjoyed a phenomenal year on the Hologic WTA Tour to secure her debut singles qualification, reaching her first Grand Slam singles final at Roland-Garros and two further semifinals at the WTA 250 Adelaide International and WTA 500 Bett1Open (Berlin).
She boosted her qualification hopes further by reaching the last eight at the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open (Doha) followed by a strong summer with quarterfinal runs at the WTA 500 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic (San Jose), WTA 1000 National Bank Open presented by Rogers (Toronto), the US Open and WTA 500 San Diego Open. Her last eight appearance in New York in September propelled her into the Top 10 for the first time in her career, and she peaked in the rankings at No.7 on October 17.
