Across town Taylor Hunter, a young, struggling mother of two, was finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. She was happy because she finally had a home for her family and on Tuesday she was set to start a job that was paying well over the Texas minimum wage. She also had a new car, which she was using Monday to transport her children to
doctor’s appointments. That is until two young men hopped into her car and sped off, she said.
In over 65 years in the funeral business –more than 40 as founder of the Golden Gate Funeral Homes – John E. Beckwith, Sr. and his family business have comforted literally thousands of families as they helped them bury their loved ones.
Hunter admits she shouldn’t have left the keys in the car but she was running into her apartment for a quick moment between errands

I experienced it many moons ago. I clearly remember being indoc trinated with the often sappy and hard-to-believe lessons taught to me in history, civics and govern ment classes: President George Washington’s cherry tree story — that as a boy, he never told a lie; that Christopher Columbus dis covered America even though Na tive Americans were already here; that the law of separate but equal was just and equitable; and that enslaved Africans were “happy

I’m writing to tell you, Gover nor, about my own experiences as a Black student growing up in the Jim Crow South before and during the early stages of racial integra tion. I experienced much of what you seek to protect white students from, and from which I’m grateful that leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others fought to “free” me.Many of the main eight con cepts of your “Stop WOKE Act” sound reasonable enough. Yet, in your public comments, you speak against conditions that you have described as “revisionist history” and “woke indoctrination.” Could it be that these revisions are sim ply telling more truth? I take your use of “revisionist” to mean that it is wrong to revise American history that was taught to me as a youth. Also, that indoctrination only is wrong now and not when
“He often said to me, ‘Rever end, funerals are for the living, not for the dead,’” said Davis. “He meant that whatever you do, it ought to be for the strength, encouragement and edifying of the living. Earlier this year, you signed Florida’s HB 7 Individual Freedom Bill, said to be the nation’s first of its kind and commonly called the “Stop WOKE Act.” Media cover age has kept the public informed about raucous support and chal lenges to the bill, including a federal judge saying the bill may violate First Amendment rights to freeOfspeech.course, the whole matter started with the volatile debate about teaching the controver sial critical race theory and The New York Times’ 1619 Project in schools. Of course, we know now that there have been myriad revisions to those and hundreds of other supposedly historical “facts.” Your effort to protect white and other students from uncomfortable his tory may be noble, but it seems partisan. When you signed the In dividual Freedom Bill (aka “Stop WOKE Act”), you said: “There is no place for indoctrination or discrimination in Florida.” Yet, in doctrination and discrimination were tenets of my civil rights era childhood education and life ex perience.Igrew up as a Black kid under “separate but equal” laws that were anything but equal. My peers and I had to hear and experience the tough lessons of a society that treated us differently. Yet I believe we were made stronger because
“We will miss Mr. Beckwith Sr. but the angels from Heaven have surrounded him and cheered him on to a higher calling,” said Constable Gulley. “We know he has fought a good fight, kept the good faith and ran one heck of a race.”
Critical race theory is an aca demic framework dating to the 1970s that centers on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation’s institutions and that those insti tutions maintain the dominance of white people. The theory is a way of analyzing American his tory through the lens of racism. Critics say the it divides society by defining people as oppressors and oppressed based on their race. They call it an attempt to rewrite American history and make white people believe they are inherently racist.

All roads lead back to our re claiming the ballot as Dr. King stated in that May 1957 speech in Washington, D.C. We remind you once again that he said if you give us the ballot, we will elect the right people to judges and legisla tive offices. Well, we have had the ballot and we are about to lose it because we are not fully using it.

“buy one get one half off” only save 25%. "Buy two get one free” is 33% off and only qualifies as a bargain if you can use three. Banks and credit unions make upwards of 30% of their profit on fees. The warning signs for “hot” check writers are gone. Bankers these days are much more de mure and much more dastardly.Financial institu tions provide over draft protection on your checking and credit card accounts at an average of $25 per occurrence. The police knew his name. They knew where he lived. His vehicle was under police control. His apprehen sion could have been made under “cooler” circumstanc es. I believe that every police of ficer deserves to return home from duty without being in jured. I believe that every officer is sworn to the oath of uphold ing the law. I accept that the du ties of the police often involve life-altering, instantaneous de cisions. With those facts given, I must agree with the assessment that race was absolutely a part of the outcome. In this case, I believe that race AND ego were integral to the outcome.

For approximately 41 min utes of questioning, the en counter was civil and Mr. Brooks complied with the offi cers’ requests. It was only after he failed a breathalyzer test and was threatened with arrest for drunk driving that the encoun ter became hostile. A struggle ensued and Mr. Brooks wres tled a taser away from one of the officers and began to flee. In response, the other officer shot Brooks in the back —twice.
During a difficult season in my life, a friend asked me a very poignant question: How does an eagle get her birds to leave the nest? I had no response. She said eagles place rocks in the nest and remove the straw. In essence, they make it uncom fortable so that the fledging will soar. It’s interesting that God will often allow challenges to al low us to activate our faith. Yet, I believe our struggles shouldn’t become endless suffering.
For many of us, we can justify the discontent to remain in dys functional situations because at least the ‘rocks’ in our lives are familiar. Instead of pursu ing the new and unknown, we settle for what we know. There’s no shame in my game, I’ve done it, too. I remember the old folks would say ‘when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you’ll do something’. The problem is that we sometimes allow ourselves to get so tied to the chaos and confusion that
can incapacitate the officers.” He added that race was not be lieved to be a factor. The lead er of the local chapter of the NAACP criticized the ruling, saying: “Race is absolutely a part of it.”

Like me, critical ob servers have come to expect decisions favoring police in cases involving Black men, and, increasingly, Black wom en. Despite assertions by law enforcement executives that there is a reformation in polic ing, evidence suggests that the reformation is principally ad ministrative and has little con sequence on the street.
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Fa ther knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. build a community that can speak into your life based on Godly wisdom and instruction. Everybody who is older is not necessarily wise. Proverbs 12:15 states, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
Life has difficulties. I think Christianity has given uninten tionally this narrative that as Believers, things get easy. That’s not true. The rain falls on the just and the unjust. (Matthew 5:45) No one is exempt. Yet, we can rest in knowing: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Isaiah 41:10 tells us “So do not fear,

For some reason, or at least from his observation, Michael surmised that the water had to be different because his friend seemed to be enjoying the water so much more than he was.

So why is “being woke” such a terrible thing? As I see it, being woke is simply looking truth in the face and walking away more informed; and yes, free to make your own final judgment. Indoctrination, as I see it, is knowing that his torical “facts” in textbooks — more likely than not — have some history writer’s inter pretation woven in. Just a reminder, my juror notice gave me great excite ment because I love serv ing, but this juror screening opened the door to prove we needed a third reconstruc tion. 1. 401(k). Company pensions are pretty much gone. Instead, com panies off employees self-di rected defined contribution plans like 401(k)s and 403(b). The problem is too many people say they can’t afford to save and don’t contribute. If your employ er offers at 401(k) or 403(b), uti lize it. Find the money, even if it’s $25 or $50 a month. The money adds up. And if there is an em ployee match, you should con tribute at least up to that match. Otherwise, you are passing up free money.
The point is that you have op tions - if you think about retirement when you are still young enough to make a difference in your future. Or you can sit back and wait for So cial Security to kick in. But that may mean a dramatic reduction in your lifestyle or being forced to work into your 70s or 80s.
Health disparities. Black Amer icans suffer higher rates of eight of the top 13 top causes of death in the United States – heart disease, stroke, cancer, influenza and pneu monia, diabetes, HIV disease, kid ney failure and homicide, said Dr. Ebony Hilton, anesthesiologist at the University of Virginia in Char lottesville, Virginia. They often are forced to retire early for health rea sons – either their own issues or to take care of a loved one with health issues. This is especially true of Black women, who are more much more likely to be caregivers than Black men, and also more likely to be the lone caregiver.

But let’s not kid ourselves. There is a reason most Black Americans take Social Security early and lock themselves into those lower pay ments for life.

Just when I thought everything was fall ing into place. I start a new job tomorrow, making a de cent salary. Now this.”
Wage disparities. Black Amer icans are locked into low-paying service jobs, and your Social Secu rity check depends on the amount you pay into the system. On aver age, Black Americans earn about half as much as White Americans. But when it comes to Social Securi ty, the more money you make, and the more you put into the system, the higher your monthly check when you retire. Low wage earn ers put less into the system and are stuck with considerably lower So cial Security benefits as a result.
Still, there are steps you can take to make sure you are not entirely

If nothing else, these numbers should point out that before de ciding on Social Security, you must have a Here’splan.the basics. The earliest you qualify for Social Security is 62, and 37 percent people take it at that age. The problem is that by taking it early, instead of waiting for full re tirement age, you lock in a 30 per cent reduction in your benefits for life. Every year you wait between 62you’re your full retirement age your benefit will increase by 8 per cent. (Full retirement age is 66 if you were born between 1943 and 1954. It increases gradually until it reach es 67 for anyone born after 1960.) If you wait until 70 you can increase your benefits another 30 percent.
dependent on that Social Security check when you retire.
2. Individual Retirement Ac count. If your job doesn’t offer a 401(k), start an IRA. You can do that with any online brokerage or mutual fund company like Vanguard or Fidelity. You can start an IRA with as little as $25 a month.
4. Reverse mortgage. I’m not a big fan of reverse mortgages, unless there is no other option. Con sidering the dire state of Black homeownership, we want to leave a legacy for our heirs. But if there is no other option, a person can tap into the equity in their homes and receive payments un til they die. Then, generally the house is sold and whatever equi ty is left goes to your heirs. Before you do a reverse mortgage, make sure you get some financial ad vice from a pro.

Knowing that Dukakis op posed the death penalty, Shaw asked Dukakis if he would support an irre vocable death penalty for a man who hypothetically raped and murdered Dukakis’s wife. Dukakis responded that he would not; some critics felt he framed his response too legalistically and logically and did not address it sufficiently personally. Other critics thought the question inflammatory and unwarranted at a presidential de bate.In 2001, at the age of 60, Bernard Shaw decided to retire from CNN. That’s the narrative the Cowboys are spreading. Whether it takes shape remains to be seen.
In all, Prescott had one of his worst games ever as he completed just 14 passes in 29 attempts for 134 yards and an interception against Tampa Bay. And as he reflects on the imme diate future, Prescott said, “Obvious ly, I’m going to miss some time and not be there for my team. And that’s what hurts more than anything, es pecially after the start that we just put out there.”

Emmett played professionally in the NBA and overseas and was a rising star in Ice Cube’s Big 3 league before he was killed.
She was overcome with emo tion during the trial when she was shown pictures of her son and of the video showing his murder.
No one is expecting Rush to rush out and pick up where he left off against the Vikings. Particularly since Prescott had unimaginable strug gles against the Bucs while working with a revamped offensive line and a group of young receivers.
“It’s just a start, but a hard way to start, a very disappointing start,” Jones said. “There’s nobody in that locker room that expected us to play like we played (Sunday).

Bengals on Sunday, are hoping for some similar magic from Rush until Prescott returns.
By Jones’ calculation, the Cowboys won’t put Prescott on the injured reserve list. He added that his star quarterback could invariably return to the lineup as soon as the Oct. 9 game against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
Cooper Rush will step in and fill the void vacated by Prescott. And his job is to jump-start a Cowboys team which was the only one in the NFL team that didn’t score a touchdown during the season’s first week.

Jones said the Cowboys would not rush out and acquire another quarter back while Prescott is on the mend. Instead, he’s leaving the quarterback ing duties to Cooper Rush and Will Grier.Last year when Prescott sat out a game at Minnesota with a strained calf, Rush started and completed 24of-40 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Cow boys to a come-from-behind 20-16 victory over the Vikings.

Prescott had surgery Monday on his injured right thumb and was told by doctors that he will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. But on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, owner Jerry Jones said not so fast.
“If we thought he wasn’t going to be ready to go until after four games, we would put him on IR (injured re serve),” Jones told The Fan. “We’re not doing that.

season-opening 19-3 loss to the Tam pa Bay Buccaneers. His injury sent shock waves throughout Cowboys Nation, with some fans fearing the season was already a loss cause be fore it could get off the ground.
Two years ago when Prescott suf fered a season-ending ankle injury, the Cowboys posted a 4-7 record the rest of that season and missed the playoffs. But coach Mike McCarthy doesn’t want his team over-reacted to another serious injury by Prescott.
Emmett, who was 37 when he was killed, grew up in Oak Cliff and attended David W. Carter High School where he excelled in basketball and won a schol arship to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where he is the alltime leading scorer in Texas Tech men’s basketball history.
