Lynchburg | Virginia | USA
ARCH2020, Spring 2012 Instructors: Zaneta Hong | Karolin Moellmann Cultural industry is an emerging economic sector that asks for creativity and originality. Different from the major sectors of agriculture, industry, and service, cultural industry creates not only monetary value but also social value. I propose folding a center in Lynchburg to gather the energy of creativity. The center is called Galt’s Gulch, named after the imaginary paradise for creators and generators of the world from Ayn Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged. It is going to be a demonstration of novelty, a trigger of change, a home to strangers, a stranger to neighbors. Galt’s Gulch is going to fold a highly vacant area in midtown Lynchburg into a dense yet permeable playground. By carving into and lifting up the land, Galt’s Gulch, while keeping its skeleton, is cutting through its old skin and muscle, replacing its heart and pumping new blood into its system. All the vacant buildings and lots in Galt’s Gulch are going to be reprogrammed into three new zones adjusted from the former function of the spaces: visual art zone, performance art zone, and development zone. The outdoor spaces take shape from the connection between the three zones, while the geometries of the indoor spaces are interdependent on the adjacent buildings within the same zone. These formal connections facilitate movements, encourage energy to collide and exchange.

Airport of Flows Henri Coanda International Airport Terminal 2 Bucharest | Romania ARCH3010, Fall 2012 Instructor: Mara Marcu
Airport is perhaps one of the only architectural design problems that start off with a blank site. It is both a massive sculpture that clutches onto the ground yet looks yarningly towards the sky, as well as a functional machine that addresses the intricate puzzle of circulation and infrastructure. Having studied the flows of aircrafts | public transportation | private automobile | passenger | staff, I propose a design that takes the form of the movements of the main players within an airport utilizing a modular roof structure that mimicks the skin of snakes. More than just a suspended surface, the roof structure starts to morph, open up, wrap around, or extruding single units downwards to embrace natural light as well as providing self support. The formal transition generates different experiential zones within the airport, from checking in to security check, from landing to baggage claim. Three arms of departure/arrival gates stretch out from the central transition hub, and opening up the opportunity for future expansion of the terminal.

I l C ic l o Il Nuovo Fondaco
Venezia | Italia
ARCH4010, Fall 2013 Instructor: Anselmo Canfora
Located on the east bank of the Grand Canal, Ca’ da Mosto, a vacant 13th century fondaco is the site for my intervention. Frequently threatened by the acqua alta, the old building sees the natuaral challenge as an opportunity. In the old days, fondachi received and delivered physical goods. Today, the new fondaco will function as a weather station to monitor the path of the wind and deliver messages about the high tide events to the whole city. In the past, fondachi kept a utilitarian and monetary relationship with its front door canal by solely using it as means of transportation. Today, the new fondaco will engage a more reciprocal exchange and interaction with the canal by embracing the hydrologic-cycle of Venice, introducing water into the building both as water research facility and as public showcase.
