With St. Clair Wright at the helm, a dedicated group of volunteers set a precedent for preservation by stopping bulldozers, renovating historic properties and enacting protective ordinances. Armed with vision, energy and determination, St. Clair Wright enlisted the support of residents, community leaders and government officials to embrace a new organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and connecting our city’s history.

Annapolis Maritime Museum

WELCOME

TO ANNAPOLIS & ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY If you’re in the mood to get away from it all, you’ve come to the right place! Whether you’re looking for the adrenaline rush of crossing the finish line first in our Wednesday Night Sailing Races, the cool serenity of an 8-acre woodland garden, or easy access to Baltimore and Washington, DC, we deliver a trip with the peace of mind you deserve, thanks to the many businesses who have put safety first. A destination of contrasts, our three regions have distinct, appealing personalities. When the time is right, Maryland’s capital city greets you with open arms and a host of possibilities. A Museum without Walls, Annapolis is a lively, upbeat, contemporary city where four centuries of architecture embrace 21st-century living. Here all roads lead to the water and a nautical heritage that runs as deep as the Chesapeake Bay is wide. While Annapolis is world-renown as America’s Sailing Capital, the Annapolis countryside claims hundreds of

miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Here, the rhythm of life moves with the tides and the seasons, and maritime villages including Deale, Galesville, Shady Side and Mayo invite you to escape to a simpler time. The nearby Historic London Town and Gardens presents nature at its finest. Home to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, the BWI-Arundel Mills region is the perfect home base for exploring Washington, DC and Baltimore. Here, you can peek behind the curtain into the world of secret codes at the National Security Agency’s National Cryptologic Museum. The nearby Arundel Mills Mall is Maryland’s largest outlet and value retail shopping destination. Right next door, Live! Casino & Hotel is one of the largest commercial casinos in the country. Not sure where to begin? This handy guide is designed to help you create the experience that’s just right for you!

City Dock

ANNAPOLIS CITY ABOUT A walk along our brick-lined streets puts you in touch with four centuries of architecture lovingly preserved. Look in any direction and you’ll find something to catch your eye—the Chesapeake Bay, sailing regattas, midshipmen in dress whites, historic landmarks, colonial guides. And that’s just for starters! Founded as Anne Arundel Town in 1649, Annapolis became the capital of Maryland in 1695 and the nation’s first peacetime capital in 1783. Today, Annapolis boasts more 18th-century brick buildings than any other city of comparable size in the country and the oldest State House in continuous legislative use in the nation. It was here that Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1783 and the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the Revolutionary War. To get your feet wet—literally—head to City Dock. It’s the heart and soul of Annapolis, a place to see and be seen.

10

After a cruise or sail of the Annapolis Harbor, check out our boutiques and specialty shops. They make it easy to take home a memory of your stay! In historic downtown Annapolis, Maryland Avenue, State Circle, Main and West Streets have earned worldwide reputations as shopping hot spots. How about a handbag from Hobo’s flagship store or a painting lovingly created at one of our nearly two dozen downtown galleries? If pottery is your passion, choose from the one-of-a-kind pieces created at Annapolis Pottery. Looking for big name department stores? Westfield Annapolis Mall, Annapolis Harbor Center, and the Annapolis Town Center at Parole offer a host of shopping possibilities. In the dining department, downtown Annapolis offers everything from the simple to the sublime—from fresh-fromthe-Bay seafood to ethnic creations that span the globe.

D O N’ T M I S S Take a guided tour of the U.S. Naval Academy (121 Blake Road, Annapolis, MD). It will open your

eyes to the day-to-day life of the 4,400-strong Brigade of Midshipmen. When the formal tour is through, be sure to visit the Naval Academy Museum (118 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis, MD), home of the famous Gallery of Ships. If you’re a history lover, don’t miss the Maryland State House and its Old Senate Chamber (100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD). It was here that George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-inChief of the Continental Army in 1783 and the Treaty of Paris was ratified, officially ending the Revolutionary War. Want to blend in with the locals? Enjoy homemade ice cream while watching boats strut their stuff at Ego Alley. Tour the last remaining screwpile lighthouse in its original location on the Chesapeake Bay. Enjoy a free summer evening concert at City Dock. Spend an afternoon shopping and dining along Maryland Avenue. Learn about life in colonial Annapolis by touring the home and reconstructed 18th-century pleasure garden of Declaration of Independence signer

and operated by Belgian chef Frederik de Pue, Flamant (17 Annapolis Street, Annapolis, MD) offers choice, fresh food rooted in the classic style of European cuisine. Now in its 36th year, Carrol’s Creek Café (410 Severn Avenue, Annapolis, MD) has gone totally nut-free. Galway Bay Restaurant, Pub and Whiskey Bar (63 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis, MD) snagged Irish Hospitality Global’s 2019 award for Best Irish Whiskey Experience in the United States. With its “all killer, no filler” crab cakes, Boatyard Bar & Grill (400 Fourth Street, Annapolis, MD) is still the best place for watching weekly replays of the Wednesday Night Sailing Races. While you’re there, treat yourself to a piece of Smith Island Cake, Maryland’s official dessert.

If you want to be in the heart of the action, Annapolis is the place to stay. No visit to Annapolis is complete without multiple treks to the Maritime Republic of Eastport! In true locals’ fashion, the best way to get to the quirky neighborhood is aboard a water taxi from City Dock. Once there, be sure to visit the Annapolis Maritime Museum (723 Second Street, Annapolis, MD). Located in one of the last remaining oyster packing plants in the area, the newly revamped museum now offers tours of the Chesapeake Bay aboard the historic skipjack, the Wilma Lee. ABOUT Minutes away, yet worlds apart from Annapolis, the surrounding countryside invites you to slow down and relax. Priorities are different. Bound more by the seasons than calendars, locals here live in the moment. The stiff neck and sore back earned at your computer may well just melt away as you yield to the slower pace of a simpler time. Nature is front and center here. Four rivers wind through the fertile farmland that looks much as it did centuries ago. Our bet is you’ll make a few new friends here—friends who are quick to share their secrets on the art of savoring the simple things in life—like a good meal, a great story and precious time spent with family and friends.

DON’T MISS Be sure to visit Historic London Town and Gardens (839 Londontown Road, Edgewater, MD). Recently designated as a “Site of Memory Associated with the Slave Route” by UNESCO, London Town shares the history of the colonial port town of London. After a 100-year

heyday, the town all but disappeared. You can rediscover it by strolling its 23acre park, touring the National Historic Landmark William Brown House and visiting the reconstructed Carpenter’s Shop and Lord Mayor’s Tenement. Coming by boat? Try docking at the county pier in Galesville on the West River. It’s close to restaurants, shops and the Galesville Heritage Museum (988 Main Street, Galesville, MD). The best day to visit is Sunday. Learn about one family’s boat-building traditions at the Hartge Nautical Museum (Church Lane, Galesville, MD). Located on the opposite side of the West River, Shady Side was once home to a fleet of commercial watermen. The Captain Avery Museum (1418 East West Shady Side Road, Shady Side, MD) recounts the life and times of one such 19thcentury waterman. Environmental research is front and center at the nearby Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (647 Contees Wharf Road, Edgewater, MD). After checking out SERC’s Reed Education Center, be sure to take a stroll along the Java

History Trail. The 1.5-mile wooded pathway recounts the history of the 368-acre site, starting with the days of the Piscataway.

W H E R E T O E AT Names like Skipper’s Pier (6158 Drum Point Road, Deale, MD), Pirate’s Cove (4817 Riverside Drive, Galesville, MD), The Pier Oyster Bar & Grill (48 South River Road South, Edgewater, MD) and Rod ‘N’ Reel (4160 Mears Avenue, Chesapeake Beach, MD) are a dead giveaway that you can count on some seriously delicious seafood here. Take time to enjoy a lazy afternoon at your favorite waterfront restaurant and watch the catch come in!

W H E R E T O S TAY Wrap up your leisurely day with a relaxing stay at a rural bed and breakfast or a luxury eco-friendly waterfront resort that you can reach by car or boat. To find the perfect fit for you, visit our website at VisitAnnapolis.org.

Forward Brewing in Eastport

WHAT’S NEW

14

Annapolis has a lively culinary scene. Despite COVID-19, several new establishments have opened their doors, including the 28-seat nanobrewery, Forward Brewing. Smaller than a microbrewery, a nano-brewery gives owners Camden and Claire Bowdren tremendous flexibility in the beers they craft and present. Dangerously Delicious Pies opened in November 2020, offering a host of sweet and savory options. The coastal California inspired kitchen and wine bar, Smashing Grapes, began serving guests in September.

Returning visitors will notice a surge in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County’s outdoor arts scene. A 7,000 square foot Breonna Taylor mural (designed to be viewed via satellite) was created at Chambers Park in Annapolis in July 2020. Another summer 2020 addition is a mural created as a tribute to beloved, belated Carlester “Walking Man” Smith. A new John Lewis mural at 95 West Street honors Lewis and other activists who led the Selma to Montgomery marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965. A host of other murals are in the works.

On the arts scene, Gallery 57 opened in summer 2020. It’s the home of the nonprofit collective artist group, the Annapolis Art Alliance (AAA). Offering a “fusion of the arts,” Gallery 57 features paintings in all media, photography, jewelry, sculpture, glass work, pottery, textile, mixed media, and more.

When COVID-19 restrictions lift, the newly renovated Annapolis Maritime Museum will begin offering onsite tours that recount the story of the Chesapeake Bay’s heritage and bounty through hands-on and state-of-the-art virtual experiences. In mid-January, Historic London Town and Gardens

In February 2020, life-size bronze statues of Harriett Tubman and Frederick Douglass were installed in the Old House of Delegates Chamber at the Maryland State House. The statues were placed there as silent witnesses to a significant moment in history – the ratification of the Maryland Constitution of 1864 that freed enslaved individuals in Maryland. Neither Douglass nor Tubman were in the House of Delegates Chamber when the Maryland Constitution was ratified. Until the moment of ratification, they would not have been allowed in the State House. Tubman and Douglass were slaves who

In May 2021, internationally acclaimed artist Patrick Dougherty will be creating a monumental environmental art installation in front of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. He will enlist the help of area students and others to gather and use sticks

and saplings to fashion a sculpture so large in scope that visitors will be able to walk through it. The saplings are a renewable resource that will be sourced locally. Sapling gathering has no long-term impact because the branches grow back and make new sticks for future sculptures. The sculpture will live on for months for visitors to enjoy.

EASTPORT Walk across the Spa Creek bridge or take the water taxi from City Dock to Eastport, home of Annapolis’ famous Restaurant Row. It would be easy to spend a lifetime here! At the head of the street sits Blackwall Hitch (400 Sixth Street, Annapolis, MD). Touting Eastport’s only rooftop lounge, the restaurant has an eclectic nautical interior, extensive menu and glittering oyster bar. Boatyard Bar & Grill (400 4th Street, Annapolis, MD) is known for its “Maryland All Killer – No Filler Crab cake” and fresh oysters. Directly across the street, the family-owned Carrol’s Creek Café (410 Severn Avenue #100, Annapolis, MD), has been serving up seafood favorites alongside Spa Creek for 36 years. Be sure to try their scallops appetizer and Rockfish. The Annapolis icon went totally nut free in 2019. Housed in a cottage in a former boatyard, O’Leary’s Seafood Restaurant (310 Third Street, Annapolis, MD), is another seafood lover’s favorite. Wild Country Seafood (124 Bay Shore Avenue, Annapolis, MD), is a secret find – even to some Annapolitans! Patrick Mahoney, Sr. and Patrick Mahoney, Jr. seasonally pilot their respective fishing boats (Wild Country and Baby Boy) to spots they know from experience will yield

catches that could include the finfish, crabs, mussels, clams and oysters they serve (and sell retail) at their tiny store and outside eatery around the corner from the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

G R E AT E R AN N AP O L I S If fresh, local seafood is high on your priority list, head to Cantler’s Riverside Inn (458 Forest Beach Road, Annapolis, MD) along Mill Creek. You and the kids can watch crabs shed their hard shells in outdoor holding tubs and take advantage of the occasion to feast on soft shell crabs. Family-owned by longtime watermen, the down-to-earth restaurant serves up heaping piles of steamed crabs on brown paper-covered tables. Like hanging out in a relaxed setting on the water? The Point Crab House & Grill (700 Mill Creek Rd, Arnold, MD) could be just what you’re looking for. Offering both inside and outside dining, the year-round crab house on Mill Creek in the Ferry Point Marina is a locals’ favorite. Owner Bobby Jones has made a name for himself with authentic Chesapeake-inspired recipes (his grandmother’s Maryland-style crab soup is a winner) and his pledge to source ingredients within 50 miles of his restaurant.

ANNAPOLIS COUNTRYSIDE Want to feel like you’re at home away from home? Dine with the locals in the Annapolis Countryside. A host of favorites invite you to pull up a chair a stay awhile. What you see is what you get – a great view, fresh local food, and people dedicated to the land and water that surround them. Known for their fist-sized crab cakes, Edgewater Restaurant (148 Mayo Road, Edgewater, MD) has been satisfying seafood lovers since 1948. Yellowfin Steak and Fish House (2840 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD) offers half-price appetizers during its happy hour – along with stunning views of the South River and docking for boaters. The family-owned, family-friendly Mike’s Restaurant and Crab House (3030 Riva Road, Riva, MD) has been serving steamed crabs and other local seafood from the shores of South River for more than 50 years. It’s not unusual to see boaters with their well-behaved dogs on the outdoor decks of Pirate’s Cove Restaurant (4817 Riverside Drive, Galesville, MD). Pet owners often enjoy a pitcher of beer with their Chesapeake Bay oysters while their pets cool off with some refreshing water. Skipper’s Pier Restaurant and Dock Bar (6158 Drum Point Rd, Deale, MD) is a great place for a crab feast that wraps up with homemade

desserts – including a variation of the Smith Island cake, Maryland’s official dessert, prepared by pastry chef and restaurant co-owner Jessica Rosage.

BWI-ARUNDEL MILLS REGION Mike’s Crab House North (1402 Colony Road, Pasadena, MD) is a sister restaurant to Mike’s in Riva with the same waterfront appeal and seafood focus. Located on the Delhaven Peninsula between the Magothy and Patapsco Rivers, locally owned and operated Two Rivers

Mike’s Restaurant & Crab House

Steak and Fish House (4105 Mountain Road, Pasadena, MD) prides itself on providing quality fresh seafood along with superbly prepared steaks. In rating the Olive Grove Restaurant (705 North Hammonds Ferry Road, Linthicum Heights, MD), Zagat said, “Zealots drive around the Beltway for fantastic crab cakes and a good house salad at this Linthicum roundhouse….” A final star in the crab crown goes to G&M Restaurant & Lounge (804 Hammonds Ferry Road, Linthicum Heights, MD), about five minutes from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Its baseball-size crab cakes, made with all-lump Maryland crab, are shipped all over the world. The new Ashling Kitchen and Bar (1286 Route 3 South, Suite 3, Crofton) is another great find. Owner Elise Letavish worked for more than a decade in the music industry where she traveled the world and worked with some of the best artists in the country. During that time, she learned the value of creating community and a sense of home around “a good meal and a stiff drink.” On a quest to do just that, the robust Ashling menu includes a variety of tastefully prepared seafood dishes in a musically inspired atmosphere.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Last year, so many people were forced to stay indoors. But we all knew fresh air could do us some good. Lucky for Anne Arundel County locals and visitors, we have plenty of it. Once again, you can take advantage of the breadth of outdoor activities that the Annapolis region has to offer—and there’s definitely no shortage of places to go, things to do and sights to see.

BIKING Whether you are an avid cyclist or someone who is just looking for a leisurely ride in the afternoon, you should be sure to come see what Annapolis has to offer. If you want to check out a slice of Maryland’s history, take a ride on the B&A Trail. This 13-mile paved trail starts in Boulters Way in Annapolis and goes to Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. As part of the East Coast Greenway, a collection of biking paths that connects communities from Maine through Florida, this historic path follows the route of the Annapolis and Baltimore Short Line, which began running service back in 1880.

Meanwhile, if you’re by the airport, you should know that there’s more to do by BWI than catch a flight. The BWI Loop is an 11-mile trail that takes riders around the perimeter of the airport. As part of the experience, you can go by the Dixon Aircraft Observation Area on your ride and catch a unique perspective of aircraft in action.

BWI Bike Trail

And if quiet is your preference, visit the Trails at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. Situated between South River and Harness Creek, you can spend a day here enjoying roughly seven miles of paved trails that go throughout the tranquil forest, providing bikers with plenty of scenic perspectives. This 5.5-mile loop provides wellmanicured trails for hikers of all skill levels who want to experience some of the best nature has to offer. On top of this, hikers can also check out Downs Park. Situated by the Chesapeake Bay, there are over five miles of trails within the nearly 250-acre park.

B I R D WAT C H I N G It may not come as a surprise to learn that birdwatching has skyrocketed in popularity over the last year. After all, it has been recently reported that birdwatching leads to an increase in happiness. So, whether you are an amateur birdwatcher or an expert ornithologist, there’s something near Annapolis for you.

Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park

22

At the Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park, which is situated on the Severn River, visitors can stop by throughout the year to try to spot the wide variety of birds Maryland has to offer. Bird lovers can also head over to Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of an Osprey, Bald Eagle or Baltimore Oriole. In fact, according to a checklist provided by the sanctuary, there are well over 200 birds that visitors can look for depending on the season. First established 35 years ago along the Patuxent River, the sanctuary has roughly 1,700 acres of protected habitats, including marshes and wetlands.

Down at Fort Smallwood Park in Pasadena, there’s a 380-foot fishing pier called the “Bill Burton Fishing Pier.” In fact, for history lovers, it should be noted that Fort Smallwood was a sea coast defense built in the later stages of the 19th century and was a fort in use through 1927. Or you can try to catch a keeper over at the pier at Downs Park, which is part of Anne Arundel County’s nearly 550 miles of tidal shoreline.

1

THE NAVAL ACADEMY CAMPUS, OR YARD, IS A FASCINATING DESTINATION THAT’S OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

6

That’s right. You don’t have to become a Naval Academy midshipman or know one in order to glimpse this fascinating historical landmark and vibrant institution that trains young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

2

THE NAVAL ACADEMY OFFERS IN-DEPTH GUIDED TOURS TO THE PUBLIC.

Want to know how midshipmen get physically prepared to face the rigors of the military? Would you like to see where the 4,000-plus midshipmen live and gather for meals? Get a close-up view of all this and more on a tour of the Naval Academy. Call the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center for details: 410-293-8687.

3

THE NAVAL ACADEMY GIFT SHOP ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE HOME SOME SPECIAL REMINDERS OF YOUR VISIT.

Conveniently located inside Gate 1 of the Naval Academy campus, the gift shop carries an array of USNA, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps merchandise, hats and an assortment of souvenirs. In addition to the mementoes available for purchase, the gift shop offers these perks: tax-free shopping, Fed Ex service, and military discounts.

4

THE ON-SITE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY MUSEUM IS NOT TO BE MISSED.

Roam this inviting two-story museum, which chronicles the illustrious history of the U.S Navy and the Naval Academy. Observe salvaged artifacts and read lively storylines that tell of important battles and events that occurred throughout the Navy’s history. You’ll marvel at the intricate, handcrafted models of naval ships from the 17th and 18th centuries. Call the Naval Academy Museum for details: 410-293-2108.

5

THE NAVAL ACADEMY CHAPEL IS WORTH A PEEK, EVEN IF YOU DON’T PLAN TO WORSHIP OR MARRY THERE.

The Naval Academy Chapel, with its iconic copper dome and giant brass doors, is a beloved beacon not only to those affiliated with the Naval Academy, but for all familiar with this integral element of the spectacular Annapolis skyline. Of note: Peter Marshall, pastor and future Chaplain to the US Senate, spoke from the Chapel’s original pulpit on Sunday December 7th, 1941, mere hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

THE REMAINS OF A FAMOUS NAVAL HERO ARE INTERRED IN THE NAVAL ACADEMY CHAPEL.

Here’s the back story: After an illustrious naval career, Commodore John Paul Jones, naval leader of the American Revolution, died alone in a Paris apartment in 1792 at the age of 45. He eventually received both proper recognition and a resting place at the Naval Academy, but not until over a century later. In 1905, after Jones’ remains were discovered—almost perfectly preserved in a tightly sealed lead casket—Paris honored him with a parade and religious service. Afterwards, his remains were brought to Annapolis and, in 1913, moved to their current resting spot: the crypt under the Naval Academy Chapel. The crypt’s elaborate Beaux Arts design includes a 21-ton sarcophagus. At the base of the tomb, you’ll find the Continental Navy ships Jones commanded during the American Revolution.

7

THROUGHOUT THE YARD, YOU’LL GLIMPSE TIMELESS NAVAL ACADEMY TRADITIONS.

There’s nothing quite like seeing 4,000plus midshipmen standing at attention in their uniforms. This happens at noon formation, an impressive display in which all midshipmen gather in front of Bancroft Hall before lunch before filing inside meticulously to the beat of a drum (Monday through Friday, weather permitting, during the Academic year). Much messier is the annual Climb of Herndon Monument. With the monument slathered in lard, Naval Academy freshmen fight their way to the top to mark the end of the academic year as plebes.

Open weekday mornings to evenings, and Saturdays through lunch. The Naval Academy Club is open to the public for a buffet lunch in its restaurant, The Alley, Monday through Friday. Call 410-2932632 for information or reservations.

NAVY SPORTING EVENTS ARE SPIRITED, FAMILYFRIENDLY AFFAIRS.

A home Navy football game is like no other college sporting event. Held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, these games involve the entire midshipmen brigade: from the ‘March On’ in which every midshipman files onto the field just before kickoff, as planes fly overhead, to the cannon blast at every kickoff and Navy score, to the ever-present Navy mascot, Bill the Goat, to the spectacle of midshipmen rushing the field whenever Navy scores, to do as many pushups as there are numbers on the score board, to the singing of the Navy Blue & Gold Song at the finale of the game. It is a one-of-a-kind treasure to be enjoyed with the entire family.

10

PLAN AHEAD FOR YOUR VISIT TO THE NAVAL ACADEMY.

Pedestrians are encouraged to enter the Naval Academy via Gate 1, which can be reached either on Randall Street (between Prince George and King George Streets) or on Prince George Street at Craig Street. Both entrances are approximately one block from the Annapolis City Dock. Upon entrance, visitors 18 and older must display a government-issued photo ID. In certain instances a second form of ID may be required. Photo copies of ID (passports, ID Cards, etc.) cannot be accepted. Non-U.S. citizens must show passport. Only vehicles with USNA IDs, DoD credentials, or handicapped tags may enter Naval Academy grounds. If you have a handicapped placard, you may obtain a pass from the Pass and ID desk in the Visitor Access Center at Gate 1. For more information on your upcoming visit to the Naval Academy, please call: 410-293-8687.

SIGHTS TO SEE

SETTLEMENT In 1650, Puritans seeking religious freedom nestled into a spot on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay and called their new town Providence. Settlers soon spread across the Severn River to the land that now makes up Maryland’s capital city. The small settlement grew and was renamed Anne Arundell in 1694 in honor of Lord Baltimore’s wife. By the late 1600s, Maryland’s 25,000 inhabitants had spread from Maryland’s then capital, St. Mary’s City, and Governor Francis Nicholson chose the growing town on the Severn as the new provincial capital because of its central location.

Nicholson renamed the new capital Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, who became Queen of England in 1702. He directed the city be built according to an elaborate baroque street plan, much like the ones used in great European capitals. The highest town circle revolved around the capitol building. The focal point of the secondhighest circle was an Anglican church. Mixed residential and mercantile areas developed around the waterfront and along the main streets. By the third quarter of the 18th century, Annapolis was the center of political, cultural and economic life in the colony. Construction of what is now Annapolis’ famed Maryland

State House began in 1772. The State House has since hosted many significant events, including General George Washington’s resignation from the Continental Army in 1783. Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris here on January 14, 1784, officially ending the American Revolution. And, in 1786, delegates from five states convened at the Maryland State House to discuss changes to the Articles of Confederation. Each of these events occurred in the Old Senate Chamber that was recently renovated. The Maryland State House is the first and only state house to serve as the nation’s capitol, when the Continental Congress met here from November 1783 until August 1784. Today, the Maryland State House is recognized as the oldest state house in continuous legislative use in the nation.

Annapolis is a Union town throughout the Civil War.

A naval school was established at Fort Severn in 1845. In 1850, it was renamed the U.S. Naval Academy. During the Civil War, hospitals at the Naval Academy and St. John’s College treated thousands of wounded Union soldiers. Paroled Union troops camped outside the town. In the late 19th century, the economic emphasis shifted from Anne Arundel County’s successful plantations to the bodies of water surrounding and flowing through Annapolis. Water trades, including oyster packing, boat building and sail-making, emerged as major industries. Waterfront villages took root throughout the county, and shipping ports bolstered their workforce. Boasting a political and cultural history that spans centuries, Annapolis is a thriving “museum without walls” that recounts the birth and evolution of a nation amidst 21st-century living.

Additionally, there are roughly 4,000 slot machines, two High Limit rooms and the outdoor Orchid Gaming & Smoking Patio. Beyond gaming, there are plenty of on-site restaurants and places where you can catch live entertainment, like The Hall at Live!, which is a new 75,000-square foot venue that books some of the industry’s biggest names.

First, you’ll want to find the right venue and ensure that accommodations are taken care of well in advance. Whether you are looking to host a larger convention or a more intimate corporate meeting, there are an array of perfect settings in the area that provide an ideal combination of space and amenities. SPRING

For those in the Annapolis area, there is perhaps no better season to go shopping than the spring. Here you have one of Maryland’s most walkable cities—and not to mention one of the most historic downtown areas in all of the state. Once the cold weather ends and it’s time to get outside again, Annapolis is a perfect place to head when you’re ready to break your winter hibernation. One of the best places to head out for a day of shopping—or for a day in general, for that matter— is Annapolis’s Main Street. This is the place in the city that appeals to everyone. Not only does the area offer something to history lovers given its decades’ worth of transcendent architecture, but this is the place in the city that simply has it all. If you want to go shopping for the next season’s outfit, you can do it here. If you are just looking for a nice meal and a night out on the town, this is the spot you’re looking for. Whether you’re looking to buy a new book or an outfit for the beach this summer, you can do it all here. Another spot that you should definitely check out is Maryland Avenue. Located in downtown Annapolis, this area is recognized as the oldest retail-centric road in all of Maryland. When you’re down here, there is so much to explore. In addition to being a short distance away from the U.S. Naval Academy, where you can also get a tour, there are no shortage of stores in this area. You can find locally-owned clothing stores, jewelers, restaurants, and even a vintage record shop along with other awe-inspiring boutiques. Plus, for those who love antique shopping, you’ll want to visit Blue Crab Antiques and Evergreen Antiques and True Vintage. The area also offers something for history fans, too. In fact, you can go visit the HammondHarwood House, which was erected in 1773 and has been highlighted as having the “most beautiful doorway in America.” There’s also Eastport, which is located not far from the downtown area. In this area, you can find a slew of restaurants and more spots to shop for antiques. Be sure to check out Annapolis Maritime Antiques which boasts the largest collection of authentic World War II Liberty ship hatch covers in their original condition. Overall, this is the perfect spot for those who love to walk and shop—and there is no better time to do this than the spring season. Maryland Avenue

The Federation of Art maintains the Circle Gallery, which is the state’s “oldest artistrun art gallery,” and showcases the different artwork of everyone from locals to national names. Katie and Travis met at work in Santa Monica, California, and some might say they were the “Jim and Pam” of their office! After getting engaged on a hike overlooking the Pacific Ocean, they began to look for a wedding venue on the east coast, near Katie’s childhood home in Howard County, Maryland. The instant they set foot on the beach at Chesapeake Bay Foundation, they knew it was the right venue. The majestic oak tree was a naturally beautiful setting for their vows and an enduring symbol of commitment. Being steps away from the water reminded them of beachy weekends on the west coast and brought back memories of Travis’s youth splashing around on Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. Katie and Travis were also enthusiastic about the CBF mission for environmental education, water conservation, and the unique opportunity to give their guests a lesson about composting toilets! When they decided to make the wedding “family only,” the flexible deck space made it comfortable and joyful, and they are forever thankful to their vendors and the CBF staff for making it the wedding of their dreams.

VENUES When you ask anyone what the most important aspect of a wedding is, they’ll all likely give you the same response: location, location, location. Luckily, Annapolis and Anne Arundel offer something for everyone when it comes to venues. If you’re looking for one of the more unique spots to get married in all of Maryland, check out what the William Paca House in Annapolis has to offer. This venue combines scenery and history. Couples can get married and hold their ceremony at this gorgeous

18th century mansion and two-acre garden that belonged to William Paca, who was a three-term governor of Maryland and signer of the Declaration of Independence. If you get married here, you are sure to have pictures that look like they are straight from a movie set. Or if you want a place that takes advantage of the summer weather, the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club has you covered there. At this Stevensville spot, couples can get married with a scenic waterside view, providing

the perfect backdrop for their special day. On top of that, the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club is known for their high caliber dining, so you and your guests can eat in style. Likewise, the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa is another venue with a backdrop that looks like something out of a movie. Another plus? This location also offers you and your guests a selection of spa services, nightly entertainment and luxury accommodations. Hotels offer an ideal location for weddings at any time of the year.

Kelly and Mitchell were married on a lovely June day in the United States Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis with their many friends and family members in attendance from all over the country. Afterward, we visited many locations around the Naval Academy campus for photos of the newlyweds, including a stop at the seawall where they frequently had lunch together while Mitchell was attending the Academy. Then it is was off to Chartwell Golf & Country Club in Severna Park, Maryland for cocktail hour and a fun-filled reception including a lively dance party. Kelly and Mitchell met in the fall of 2013 while both were in college. Kelly was attending the University of Delaware, and Mitchell, of course, was at the Naval Academy. Mitchell and some of his friends visited the University of Delaware one weekend, and Kelly and Mitchell met by chance while both were out with friends. After that, they spent every weekend together that they could! After graduating from the Naval Academy, Mitchell went into the Marines and got stationed in North Carolina and Kelly made the move with him. Then, in December 2017 on a trip back home for the holidays to visit with family, Mitchell decided to make a pitstop on the campus of the University of Delaware. He proposed to Kelly under the “kissing arches” on that campus, and they celebrated their engagement with their friends and family over the holiday break.

KIRA & ERIC

Tosha, The Captured Life Photography

Eric and Kira Bibbs married at the BWI Westin in August (2014). They met through a mutual friend and connected over a love of travel, music and wine. Eric proposed one New Year’s Eve at a friend’s party. He even pulled out some homemade mistletoe to seal the deal. With many family and friends needing to travel to their wedding, along with Eric and Kira’s love for adventure, a travel themed wedding seemed perfect. They sought out a modern space, with proximity to the airport and amenities to make it convenient for any out-of-town guests. The Westin BWI was the perfect venue for them. Along with the travel theme, their colors were black, white, and shades of pink. The ceremony location was converted into the reception space while guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the atrium and outdoor garden. Darren of 27 Studios provided the lighting and draping to enhance the look for the reception. There was plenty of sunshine and space for outdoor photos.

The restaurant’s Annapolitan Room can hold up to 50 people for dinner and 70 for cocktail parties. Likewise, Annapolis’s Galway Bay is a great Irish pub where couples can rent out space for their rehearsal dinner before their special day.

What to do in Annapolis? Why, have fun, of course! There are dozens of ways to do just that – from getting out on the water, to exploring our four centuries of history, to indulging in our international cuisine, to shopping the day away. Add to that our events and festivals, and you have a lot of decision making to do! Our nation’s beginnings are linked to the Maryland State House where General George Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the continental army. It was here that the continental congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the Revolutionary War. Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence had homes in Annapolis, and three of them are open for tours today. As Maryland’s capital city, Annapolis’ role in the political arena continues. Stop by the State House during the legislature’s 90-day session from January until April and watch history in the making. Annapolis is a Museum without Walls. With more 18th-century brick buildings than any city of comparable size in the nation, the City of Anne immerses you in history every step of the way. The U.S. Naval Academy with its centuries of tradition anchors the Historic District. But steeped in tradition doesn’t mean stuck in the past. Annapolis is a thriving, upbeat, contemporary city with a casual sophistication that appeals to visitors from around the world. They come for our U.S. Sailboat and Powerboat Shows, our Blue Angels’ flight demonstrations, our seafood and ethnic festivals, our Wednesday Night Sailboat Races – and our friendly residents. Come join us!

ANNAPOLIS COUNTRYSIDE From the seaport villages of Galesville and Shady Side, whose heritage is linked to the land and water, to the booming Waugh Chapel and Odenton

areas, to the residential communities of Arnold, Severna Park, and Pasadena, the Annapolis Countryside is as diverse as the people who call it home. Here, you’ll find Sandy Point State Park, with sandy Bay beaches perfect for sunning. Fishing piers and boat rentals make it a great family find. Home of the Anne Arundel County fairgrounds, Crownsville plays host to festivals and events year-round. The nearby Maryland Renaissance Festival is the second largest in the country. Surrounded by the Magothy and Severn Rivers, Arnold is home to Anne Arundel Community College which hosts events and cultural performances year-round. The countryside also embraces Herring Bay and the Herrington Harbour Marina, a certified Maryland Clean Marina. Herrington Harbour North is home to a Historic Village – a collection of 19th-century southern Maryland buildings brought in to create a rural village on the marina’s grounds. If you’re into the outdoors, keep the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Lothian on your radar. If you head to the 2,650-acre site, bring your kayak! As the largest block of contiguous preserved land and the largest site of public access on the Western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, they offer several miles of walking and hiking trails and public access to the water. The nearby Historic London Town and Gardens Edgewater recounts the story of the lost colonial seaport of London. While you’re there, take time to explore their eight-acre woodland garden. It won’t disappoint. From there, it’s an easy jaunt to the Galesville Heritage Museum and the Hartge Yacht Yard before moving on to the Captain Avery Museum in Shady Side. Here you’ll learn about a successful commercial waterman from years gone by.

BWI-ARUNDEL MILLS REGION Home of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, the region is the perfect place to stay if Baltimore and/ or Washington DC are a part of your travel plans. Because we offer more affordable overnight options than our larger neighbors, you’ll have more money to spend on the things you enjoy. If you like to shop, spending the night in the BWI-Arundel Mills region has other advantages as well. It’s just minutes from the largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination in Maryland, Arundel Mills. The shopper-tainment complex features more than 200 stores and entertainment options, including designer name brand retailers. Medieval Times Dinner and Tournaments and Dave and Busters are perfect for family fun. For the 21 and older group, Live! Casino & Hotel is one of the largest commercial casinos in the nation. Spa, and world class dining at the Zagat-rated #1 steakhouse, The Prime Rib. Opened in December 2019, the 75,000-square-foot, three-story Hall at Live! hosts some of the nation’s best touring acts, comedians, championship boxing and other show stopping entertainment. Home to Fort Meade and the National Security Agency, the area has earned a reputation for being the cyber-security capital of the nation.
