With St. Clair Wright at the helm, a dedicated group of volunteers set a precedent for preservation by stopping bulldozers, renovating historic properties and enacting protective ordinances. Armed with vision, energy and determination, St. Clair Wright enlisted the support of residents, community leaders and government ofﬁcials to embrace a new organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and connecting our city’s history.

The William Paca House - Built in the 1760s, this National Historic Landmark was carefully restored by HA and is recognized as one of the ﬁnest 18th-century homes in the country. ISSUE SIX : WINTER 20 Hogshead - Located at 43 Pinkney Street, this living history museum is a rare surviving example of a building type common in 18th-century Annapolis. Today, visitors learn what life was like for the “lower and middling sort” through interactive experiences. Open weekends. ANNAPOLIS CITY ABOUT A walk along our brick-lined streets puts you in touch with four centuries of architecture lovingly preserved. Look in any direction and you’ll find something to catch your eye—the Chesapeake Bay, sailing regattas, midshipmen in dress whites, historic landmarks, colonial guides. And that’s just for starters! Founded as Anne Arundel Town in 1649, Annapolis became the capital of Maryland in 1695 and the nation’s first peacetime capital in 1783. Today, Annapolis boasts more 18th-century brick buildings than any other city of comparable size in the country and the oldest State House in continuous legislative use in the nation. It was here that Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1783 and the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the Revolutionary War. To get your feet wet—literally—head to City Dock. It’s the heart and soul of Annapolis, a place to see and be seen.

If you’re a history lover, don’t miss the Maryland State House and its Old Senate Chamber (100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD). Galway Bay Restaurant, Pub and Whiskey Bar (63 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis, MD) snagged Irish Hospitality Global’s 2019 award for Best Irish Whiskey Experience in the United States. With its “all killer, no filler” crab cakes, Boatyard Bar & Grill (400 Fourth Street, Annapolis, MD) is still the best place for watching weekly replays of the Wednesday Night Sailing Races. In true locals’ fashion, the best way to get to the quirky neighborhood is aboard a water taxi from City Dock. Once there, be sure to visit the Annapolis Maritime Museum (723 Second Street, Annapolis, MD). Located in one of the last remaining oyster packing plants in the area, the newly revamped museum now offers tours of the Chesapeake Bay aboard the historic skipjack, the Wilma Lee. ABOUT Minutes away, yet worlds apart from Annapolis, the surrounding countryside invites you to slow down and relax. Priorities are different. Bound more by the seasons than calendars, locals here live in the moment. The stiff neck and sore back earned at your computer may well just melt away as you yield to the slower pace of a simpler time. Nature is front and center here. Four rivers wind through the fertile farmland that looks much as it did centuries ago. DON’T MISS Be sure to visit Historic London Town and Gardens (839 Londontown Road, Edgewater, MD). Recently designated as a “Site of Memory Associated with the Slave Route” by UNESCO, London Town shares the history of the colonial port town of London. After a 100-year

heyday, the town all but disappeared. You can rediscover it by strolling its 23acre park, touring the National Historic Landmark William Brown House and visiting the reconstructed Carpenter’s Shop and Lord Mayor’s Tenement. Coming by boat? Try docking at the county pier in Galesville on the West River. It’s close to restaurants, shops and the Galesville Heritage Museum (988 Main Street, Galesville, MD). The best day to visit is Sunday. Learn about one family’s boat-building traditions at the Hartge Nautical Museum (Church Lane, Galesville, MD). Located on the opposite side of the West River, Shady Side was once home to a fleet of commercial watermen. The Captain Avery Museum (1418 East West Shady Side Road, Shady Side, MD) recounts the life and times of one such 19thcentury waterman. Environmental research is front and center at the nearby Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (647 Contees Wharf Road, Edgewater, MD). After checking out SERC’s Reed Education Center, be sure to take a stroll along the Java

History Trail. The 1.5-mile wooded pathway recounts the history of the 368-acre site, starting with the days of the Piscataway.

Forward Brewing in Eastport

WHAT’S NEW

Annapolis has a lively culinary scene. Despite COVID-19, several new establishments have opened their doors, including the 28-seat nanobrewery, Forward Brewing. Smaller than a microbrewery, a nano-brewery gives owners Camden and Claire Bowdren tremendous flexibility in the beers they craft and present. Dangerously Delicious Pies opened in November 2020, offering a host of sweet and savory options. The coastal California inspired kitchen and wine bar, Smashing Grapes, began serving guests in September.

Returning visitors will notice a surge in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County’s outdoor arts scene. A 7,000 square foot Breonna Taylor mural (designed to be viewed via satellite) was created at Chambers Park in Annapolis in July 2020. Another summer 2020 addition is a mural created as a tribute to beloved, belated Carlester “Walking Man” Smith. A new John Lewis mural at 95 West Street honors Lewis and other activists who led the Selma to Montgomery marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965. A host of other murals are in the works.

On the arts scene, Gallery 57 opened in summer 2020. It’s the home of the nonprofit collective artist group, the Annapolis Art Alliance (AAA). Offering a “fusion of the arts,” Gallery 57 features paintings in all media, photography, jewelry, sculpture, glass work, pottery, textile, mixed media, and more.

When COVID-19 restrictions lift, the newly renovated Annapolis Maritime Museum will begin offering onsite tours that recount the story of the Chesapeake Bay’s heritage and bounty through hands-on and state-of-the-art virtual experiences. In mid-January, Historic London Town and Gardens

In February 2020, life-size bronze statues of Harriett Tubman and Frederick Douglass were installed in the Old House of Delegates Chamber at the Maryland State House. In May 2021, internationally acclaimed artist Patrick Dougherty will be creating a monumental environmental art installation in front of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. He will enlist the help of area students and others to gather and use sticks

and saplings to fashion a sculpture so large in scope that visitors will be able to walk through it. The saplings are a renewable resource that will be sourced locally. Sapling gathering has no long-term impact because the branches grow back and make new sticks for future sculptures. The sculpture will live on for months for visitors to enjoy.

Last year, so many people were forced to stay indoors. But we all knew fresh air could do us some good. Lucky for Anne Arundel County locals and visitors, we have plenty of it. Once again, you can take advantage of the breadth of outdoor activities that the Annapolis region has to offer—and there’s definitely no shortage of places to go, things to do and sights to see.

BIKING Whether you are an avid cyclist or someone who is just looking for a leisurely ride in the afternoon, you should be sure to come see what Annapolis has to offer. If you want to check out a slice of Maryland’s history, take a ride on the B&A Trail. This 13-mile paved trail starts in Boulters Way in Annapolis and goes to Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. As part of the East Coast Greenway, a collection of biking paths that connects communities from Maine through Florida, this historic path follows the route of the Annapolis and Baltimore Short Line, which began running service back in 1880.

Meanwhile, if you’re by the airport, you should know that there’s more to do by BWI than catch a flight. The BWI Loop is an 11-mile trail that takes riders around the perimeter of the airport. As part of the experience, you can go by the Dixon Aircraft Observation Area on your ride and catch a unique perspective of aircraft in action.

And if quiet is your preference, visit the Trails at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. HIKING If hiking is your thing, then the Annapolis area definitely has you covered. First, there’s the Bacon Ridge Trail. This 5.5-mile loop provides wellmanicured trails for hikers of all skill levels who want to experience some of the best nature has to offer. On top of this, hikers can also check out Downs Park. Situated by the Chesapeake Bay, there are over five miles of trails within the nearly 250-acre park.

B I R D WAT C H I N G It may not come as a surprise to learn that birdwatching has skyrocketed in popularity over the last year. After all, it has been recently reported that birdwatching leads to an increase in happiness. So, whether you are an amateur birdwatcher or an expert ornithologist, there’s something near Annapolis for you.

At the Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park, which is situated on the Severn River, visitors can stop by throughout the year to try to spot the wide variety of birds Maryland has to offer. Bird lovers can also head over to Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of an Osprey, Bald Eagle or Baltimore Oriole. In fact, according to a checklist provided by the sanctuary, there are well over 200 birds that visitors can look for depending on the season. First established 35 years ago along the Patuxent River, the sanctuary has roughly 1,700 acres of protected habitats, including marshes and wetlands.

Down at Fort Smallwood Park in Pasadena, there’s a 380-foot fishing pier called the “Bill Burton Fishing Pier.” In fact, for history lovers, it should be noted that Fort Smallwood was a sea coast defense built in the later stages of the 19th century and was a fort in use through 1927. Or you can try to catch a keeper over at the pier at Downs Park, which is part of Anne Arundel County’s nearly 550 miles of tidal shoreline.

The Naval Academy Chapel, with its iconic copper dome and giant brass doors, is a beloved beacon not only to those affiliated with the Naval Academy, but for all familiar with this integral element of the spectacular Annapolis skyline. Of note: Peter Marshall, pastor and future Chaplain to the US Senate, spoke from the Chapel’s original pulpit on Sunday December 7th, 1941, mere hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

THE REMAINS OF A FAMOUS NAVAL HERO ARE INTERRED IN THE NAVAL ACADEMY CHAPEL.

Here’s the back story: After an illustrious naval career, Commodore John Paul Jones, naval leader of the American Revolution, died alone in a Paris apartment in 1792 at the age of 45. He eventually received both proper recognition and a resting place at the Naval Academy, but not until over a century later. In 1905, after Jones’ remains were discovered—almost perfectly preserved in a tightly sealed lead casket—Paris honored him with a parade and religious service. Afterwards, his remains were brought to Annapolis and, in 1913, moved to their current resting spot: the crypt under the Naval Academy Chapel. The crypt’s elaborate Beaux Arts design includes a 21-ton sarcophagus. At the base of the tomb, you’ll find the Continental Navy ships Jones commanded during the American Revolution.

There’s nothing quite like seeing 4,000plus midshipmen standing at attention in their uniforms. This happens at noon formation, an impressive display in which all midshipmen gather in front of Bancroft Hall before lunch before filing inside meticulously to the beat of a drum (Monday through Friday, weather permitting, during the Academic year). Much messier is the annual Climb of Herndon Monument. With the monument slathered in lard, Naval Academy freshmen fight their way to the top to mark the end of the academic year as plebes.

No need to interrupt your visit to the Naval Academy by walking into town for a bite to eat—although if you choose, there are several dining establishments in downtown Annapolis within strolling distance. On campus, you have two options. The legendary Drydock Restaurant, in Dahlgreen Hall, serves deli-style sandwiches, grilled items, and pizza that’s hailed as the best in town. NAVY SPORTING EVENTS ARE SPIRITED, FAMILYFRIENDLY AFFAIRS.

A home Navy football game is like no other college sporting event. Held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, these games involve the entire midshipmen brigade: from the ‘March On’ in which every midshipman files onto the field just before kickoff, as planes fly overhead, to the cannon blast at every kickoff and Navy score, to the ever-present Navy mascot, Bill the Goat, to the spectacle of midshipmen rushing the field whenever Navy scores, to do as many pushups as there are numbers on the score board, to the singing of the Navy Blue & Gold Song at the finale of the game. It is a one-of-a-kind treasure to be enjoyed with the entire family.

SIGHTS TO SEE

SETTLEMENT In 1650, Puritans seeking religious freedom nestled into a spot on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay and called their new town Providence. Settlers soon spread across the Severn River to the land that now makes up Maryland’s capital city. The small settlement grew and was renamed Anne Arundell in 1694 in honor of Lord Baltimore’s wife. By the late 1600s, Maryland’s 25,000 inhabitants had spread from Maryland’s then capital, St. Mary’s City, and Governor Francis Nicholson chose the growing town on the Severn as the new provincial capital because of its central location.

Nicholson renamed the new capital Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, who became Queen of England in 1702. He directed the city be built according to an elaborate baroque street plan, much like the ones used in great European capitals. The highest town circle revolved around the capitol building. The focal point of the secondhighest circle was an Anglican church. Mixed residential and mercantile areas developed around the waterfront and along the main streets. Nicholson moves Maryland’s capital from St. Mary’s City to the town and port of Ann Arundell and renames it Annapolis.

State House began in 1772. The State House has since hosted many significant events, including General George Washington’s resignation from the Continental Army in 1783. Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris here on January 14, 1784, officially ending the American Revolution. And, in 1786, delegates from five states convened at the Maryland State House to discuss changes to the Articles of Confederation. Each of these events occurred in the Old Senate Chamber that was recently renovated. The Maryland State House is the first and only state house to serve as the nation’s capitol, when the Continental Congress met here from November 1783 until August 1784. Today, the Maryland State House is recognized as the oldest state house in continuous legislative use in the nation.

Annapolis is a Union town throughout the Civil War.

A naval school was established at Fort Severn in 1845. In 1850, it was renamed the U.S. Naval Academy. During the Civil War, hospitals at the Naval Academy and St. John’s College treated thousands of wounded Union soldiers. Paroled Union troops camped outside the town. In the late 19th century, the economic emphasis shifted from Anne Arundel County’s successful plantations to the bodies of water surrounding and flowing through Annapolis. Water trades, including oyster packing, boat building and sail-making, emerged as major industries. Waterfront villages took root throughout the county, and shipping ports bolstered their workforce. Boasting a political and cultural history that spans centuries, Annapolis is a thriving “museum without walls” that recounts the birth and evolution of a nation amidst 21st-century living.

The tavern was built between 1747 and 1755 by William Reynolds. From 1812 to 1935, the cashier of Farmers National Bank lived here, and from 1936 to 1957, the building housed the Anne Arundel County Library. The tavern is now a tearoom, pub and inn.

87 West St., 410-268-9500 This 1888 Gothic Revival church housed one of the earliest African Methodist Episcopal congregations in Annapolis. It stands on the site of their 1803 church. BANNEKERDOUGLASS MUSEUM

84 Franklin St., 410-216-6180 The first African Methodist Episcopal Church of Annapolis was founded in the 1790s. In 1984, it became Maryland’s official museum of African American heritage. Construction of the church began in 1874. After storm damage in 1896, the church was rebuilt with its present Gothic Revival front facade, including the stained-glass rose window. In 2004, the museum opened a four-story addition.

The original Federalstyle portion of the courthouse was built in 1824 and enlarged in 1892 in the Italianate style with a projecting tower and cupola. Church Circle, 410-267-9333 The present church, built in Romanesque Revival style, is the third to stand on this site. Construction began in 1859, using some of the walls and the tower of the second church, which had been destroyed by fire in 1858. 110 State Circle, 410-974-3531 The state bought land in 1868 to build a new home for the governor. It was completed in 1870 as a French Empire mansion. A 1936 remodel converted the house into the five-part Georgian style of the Colonial period. Un terreno comprado por el estado en 1868 se uso para construir una nueva casa para el gobernador. Until 1779, it housed the offices of the commissioners who distributed bills of credit, which served as the colony’s paper money. Maryland Inn

16 Church Circle, 410-263-2641 Merchant Thomas Hyde completed this three-story tavern and inn before the Revolution. The stone foundations and Flemish bond brick walls mark the original form. 160 Duke of Gloucester St., 410-263-7997 Assembly rooms were social gathering places in the 1760s. After the building burned during the Civil War, the three surviving walls were incorporated into the present City Hall.

124 Charles St. This gambrel-roof dwelling was the home of Jonas Green, Colonial printer of the Maryland Gazette. Built in the 1740s, it housed Green’s print shop until 1786.

138 Conduit St., 410-267-8705 A rare example of Queen Anne architecture in Annapolis, the pattern-book house was built for Charles Zimmerman, a U.S. Naval Academy band leader and composer of “Anchors Aweigh.” Un ejemplo poco frecuente de la arquitectura de principios del siglo XVIII en Annapolis. First Presbyterian Church

Duke of Gloucester Street at Conduit Street, 410-267-8705 The site of the First Presbyterian Church it originally housed the Hallman Theater, and was built in 1828. The congregation bought the property in 1846. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1874, and in 1948 the steeple was added. 163 Duke of Gloucester St. Members of two African American families owned the dwelling for 150 years. Free black man John Maynard was its first occupant. He bought the property in 1847. Saint Mary’s Church

The interior displays the rib vaulting and hand-carved altar typical of Gothic Revival. The octagonal spire was added around 1876. Charles Carroll House

107 Duke of Gloucester St. The circa-1720s house was enlarged in the 1770s, 1790s and 1850s. Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, was born in this house in 1737 and lived here until 1821. CITY DOCK AND ALEX HALEY MEMORIAL

City Dock has been the center of Annapolis’ maritime life for more than 300 years. At the head of the Dock, a memorial commemorates the 1767 arrival of Kunta Kinte, an African slave immortalized by descendant Alex Haley in the book and television series, “Roots”.

The Shiplap House, circa 1715, was probably built by its first occupant, sawyer Edward Smith. Smith ran an ordinary (tavern) in the house.

St. John’s College Campus, 410-2632371 Construction began in 1742 on a house for Colonial governor Thomas Bladen. When the legislature denied more funds for its completion, the shell became known as “Bladen’s Folly.” Given to St. John’s College in 1784, the building originally housed the entire college. Katie and Travis met at work in Santa Monica, California, and some might say they were the “Jim and Pam” of their office! After getting engaged on a hike overlooking the Pacific Ocean, they began to look for a wedding venue on the east coast, near Katie’s childhood home in Howard County, Maryland. The instant they set foot on the beach at Chesapeake Bay Foundation, they knew it was the right venue. The majestic oak tree was a naturally beautiful setting for their vows and an enduring symbol of commitment. Being steps away from the water reminded them of beachy weekends on the west coast and brought back memories of Travis’s youth splashing around on Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan. Katie and Travis were also enthusiastic about the CBF mission for environmental education, water conservation, and the unique opportunity to give their guests a lesson about composting toilets! Kelly and Mitchell were married on a lovely June day in the United States Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis with their many friends and family members in attendance from all over the country. Afterward, we visited many locations around the Naval Academy campus for photos of the newlyweds, including a stop at the seawall where they frequently had lunch together while Mitchell was attending the Academy. Then it is was off to Chartwell Golf & Country Club in Severna Park, Maryland for cocktail hour and a fun-filled reception including a lively dance party. Kelly and Mitchell met in the fall of 2013 while both were in college. Kelly was attending the University of Delaware, and Mitchell, of course, was at the Naval Academy. Mitchell and some of his friends visited the University of Delaware one weekend, and Kelly and Mitchell met by chance while both were out with friends. After that, they spent every weekend together that they could! After graduating from the Naval Academy, Mitchell went into the Marines and got stationed in North Carolina and Kelly made the move with him. Then, in December 2017 on a trip back home for the holidays to visit with family, Mitchell decided to make a pitstop on the campus of the University of Delaware. He proposed to Kelly under the “kissing arches” on that campus, and they celebrated their engagement with their friends and family over the holiday break.

Eric and Kira Bibbs married at the BWI Westin in August (2014). They met through a mutual friend and connected over a love of travel, music and wine. Eric proposed one New Year’s Eve at a friend’s party. He even pulled out some homemade mistletoe to seal the deal. With many family and friends needing to travel to their wedding, along with Eric and Kira’s love for adventure, a travel themed wedding seemed perfect. They sought out a modern space, with proximity to the airport and amenities to make it convenient for any out-of-town guests. The Westin BWI was the perfect venue for them. Along with the travel theme, their colors were black, white, and shades of pink. The ceremony location was converted into the reception space while guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the atrium and outdoor garden. Darren of 27 Studios provided the lighting and draping to enhance the look for the reception. There was plenty of sunshine and space for outdoor photos.

You will find Annapolis is a very walkable town so once you have parked your car, you can enjoy the town on foot or use the Circulator or water taxis to get around town.

From BWI airport

All RVs, oversized vans and buses must park at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. $10/day. Shuttle service to downtown Annapolis is available M-F.

By car: take I-97 south to Route 50 east. Take exit 24, Rowe Blvd., and follow signs to the Visitors Center.

After the allotted time, vehicles may pay to remain in the parking space at the meter rate and must be moved when time expires.

By bus: take MTA Metrorail to Linthicum Station, change trains to Cromwell Station and connect with #70 MTA bus to Annapolis.

TRAVELING BY LAND

MTA Metrorail also provides a quick link from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Camden Yards to BWI Airport.

From Washington, D.C.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Circulator

By metro/car: take WMATA Metrorail’s orange line to New Carrollton Station and reserve a car with Annapolis Transportation Solutions, ZBest Limousine Service, or Towne Transport, to Annapolis.

The Circulator Bus transports visitors from four parking garages (Hillman, Gott’s Court, Knighton and Park Place) around the central business and tourism district for free. The Circulator runs on a 20-minute interval. By bus: Megabus provides service between NYC and Annapolis with two departures leaving NYC and arriving in Annapolis in the evening at the MTA Truman Park & Ride lot, 275 Harry S. Truman Parkway.
