The first "bathing suits" for women were introduced in the early 1800s. At that time it was still considered improper for skin to be shown in public. The first "suits" were composed of long sleeved bathing dresses with woolen bloomers underneath to weigh the dress down. The only "swimming" a woman did at that time was to jump waves at the edge of the water and dip her feet, and occasionally legs, into the water.

All Aboard! The Naugatuck Railroad Is The Place To Be This Summer Naugatuck railroad 242 east Main street Thomaston, CT (860) 283-7245 www.rmne.org

Join us this June to experience the exciting sights, smells and sounds of steam on the Naugatuck railroad! hank the Tank engine returns as Flagg Coal #75 leading several trips over our scenic railroad between June 8 and Father’s day, June 17, departing from Thomaston station. This is a special event you will not want to miss! The hiss of steam, the steady chugging of the engine, the call of the whistle echoing off the hills… These were the sounds of the iron horse, the american steam locomotive, the Machine That Built america. Those sounds will be heard again in Thomaston this June 8 - 17 as the railroad Museum of New england hosts hank the Tank, also known as Flagg Coal Co. #75. Between the 1830s and 1960, steam locomotives carried passengers and freight to every corner of america. They became part of our national history, a symbol of mobility and change. Over the years, steam locomotives became larger and more efficient. But technology advances after

World War ii changed the face of railroading forever. By 1948, steam engines were gone from the Naugatuck Valley, replaced by modern diesel locomotives on the New haven railroad from Bridgeport to Winsted, ending an important era in modern industrial history. Flagg Coal Co. #75 is a 40 ton coal-fired steam locomotive built in 1930. it worked in Pennsylvania coal mines and New york rock quarries until it was retired in 1953. #75 rusted away, forgotten until 1991, when it was purchased by father and son team John and Barney Gramling from indiana. The Gramlings moved #75 to their farm and fully restored it to operating condition, completing it October 2001. since then, #75 has since traveled as far as Florida, Michigan, and North Carolina as a living, breathing ambassador of american steam railroading. This event also features storybook readings

of hank the Tank, written by Pat Gramling, winner of international Book award in 2011, Children’s Picture Book Category. We will also feature live music, games and activities for kids of all ages. The railroad Museum of New england is a not for profit historical and educational organization. Our main office is located in our train station at 242 east Main st. in Thomaston. Our mission is to preserve, restore, interpret and display for current and future generations the railroad culture and heritage of New england. We offer an entertaining and scenic train ride along the Naugatuck river from our historic 1881 train station. Our operating subsidiary, the Naugatuck railroad Company, (NrC) operates the 19.5 miles of track between Waterbury and Torrington with vintage locomotives, passenger and freight cars and cabooses. Both rMNe and NrC are all-volunteer organizations.

Choose The Right Contractor Before You Install That New Pool to what you are getting with each, i.e. filter system, style of plumbing, number of return lines. There is top-of-the-line and cheaper equipment, so do your homework. ask if excavation is included and up to what level or amount of hours. One company may list something as an option while another may include it in the package. a good estimate includes the total package, which will give you an idea of not only what the pool itself will cost but also what you will need in your budget for the electrician, water, fencing, decking, and offers referrals so, should you not know anyone in those fields, the process is streamlined and it all gets done.

The bottom line is that the cheapest estimate may not be your first choice. after considering hard facts, you will follow your gut, such as you heard good things about this guy, or you liked the way this one envisioned what your yard would look like when completed, or one was more of a salesman while the other seemed more honest about the whole process. remember, this is a big ticket purchase and, hopefully, a relationship where you deal with the company for years to come and, in the end, you have to be able to feel good that you are dealing with someone you can trust. pool contractor. The best way to find a contractor is through a referral or friend who has used the business and is happy with their services. Outside of that, contact a few reputable businesses that have been established, can give you references on the spot, and offer follow-through services such as a retail store for all your pool needs, water analysis, and a service department that is familiar with the products you will have on your pool. Make sure, first and foremost, they are licensed and insured. in Connecticut, that means a home contractors and sP1 for the owner and an sP2 license for their employees indicating the level of training provided. Waverly, Baxter’s, And Vic House Labor Of Love For Local Owner The Victorian house restaurant 226 Maple avenue Cheshire, CT (203) 272-5743 www.thevichouse.com

728 North Colony road Wallingford, CT (203) 269-2800

The Waverly inn 286 Maple avenue Cheshire, CT (203) 272-2441

It began in 2004 when local restauranteur august Cipully bought the Victorian house at 226

Maple avenue. The Vic house is the perfect dichotomy of a rustic “peanut shells on the floor” pub and three quaint Victorian dining rooms. What started as a sincere interest to create a friendly atmosphere where people could enjoy great food at an affordable price quickly became a passion. as the Vic house became more successful, augie set his sights on another restaurant in Wallingford in July of 2009. located at 728 North Colony road, K.T. Bax-

ter's is one of the few non-chain restaurants on route 5 that offer freshly made food at comparable prices. Both restaurants serve a wide variety of all-american fare at reasonable prices. Both menus offer everything from wraps and salads to sumptuous steaks, chicken, and seafood entrees. and in the warmer months, customers can sit outside on the patio of either restaurant. Whether inside or outside, both places capture that “at home” feeling of eating with

Many men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things gardeners should consider before building a greenhouse. * Size: a greenhouse can be

grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. larger greenhouses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to dominate your entire property. if your planting plans are relatively modest, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn't make much sense.

family and friends. lastly, in November of 2011, augie took on his biggest challenge. he bought and renovated Cheshire's oldest and most historical landmark and renamed it its original name, The Waverly inn. located at 286 Maple avenue, the Waverly serves modern american food with an italian fusion. augie kept the original saratoga bar and refinished it to make it the heart of the new place. The front dining room has been completely

redecorated so that its patrons feel they are dining in Tuscany. The banquet hall, which can accommodate up to 125 people, is the perfect place to host showers, receptions, reunions, or bereavements. The Waverly inn is the ideal place to go for anyone who wants a subtle step up from casual dining to more upscale fare. augie and his staff welcome everyone to come and break bread with them.

There Are Many Issues To Consider Before Erecting That First Greenhouse * Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which greenhouse you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs. * Use: if you plan to use the greenhouse just during the standard gardening seasons, then you won't need to heat it. however, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. in addition, those

who want to keep gardening during the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse. * Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Before buying or building a greenhouse, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. if that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is something they can all live with. you don't want the greenhouse to negatively impact your life.

What most people do not know is that our watches need periodic care as well. Watches that have batteries need to have the battery changed

Watches with mainsprings, manual, wind, or automatic need to be cleaned and lubricated every three to five years to preserve their accuracy and durability.
