For Breast Cancer Patients, The Right Team Has Been Right Here — For 10 Years
W
hen it comes to comprehensive breast care, it is all right here at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. Our collaborative care model is built around a team of oncology experts that includes dedicated breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses with specialized training and interest in breast health issues, social workers, and nutritional and pastoral support. Our team works together to ensure that every patient benefits from the most current information available in every area of breast cancer care. Our
bimonthly, multidisciplinary breast cancer conferences are one of the ways we make that happen. During each session, our expert team reviews breast cancer cases; in 2009 alone, almost every breast cancer case treated in Greater Waterbury was reviewed by our panel. Each member of the professional medical team brings his or her own frame of reference and unique set of knowledge, training and skills into consultation to develop comprehensive, integrated care and treatment plans for each individual patient. Recently, the Breast Center of Greater Waterbury at the
Leever Cancer Center was awarded full, three-year accreditation by exceeding National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) requirements in all 27 program standards and 17 program components of care. Collectively, those measures define comprehensive, efficient, and advanced breast care at its best. Each of the services offered through the Breast Center is also individually reviewed and accredited. Our team approach to breast
cancer care is reflected not just in medical care, but in our broad range of support personnel and services. Through our on-site American Cancer Society Patient Resource Center, breast cancer patients have access to a comprehensive library, free wigs and head coverings, transportation services, and nationally affiliated support groups including Brave at Heart, Woman to Woman and the Look Good, Feel Better programs, and Reach to Recovery, a one-to-one peer support program touching women at every stage of their Ad#:1239554 Date:04/18/12 Day:WED Size:4X5.5 Cust:ASSISTED LIVING OF MERID Salesperson:402 Last Edited diagjourney, from potential By:DLISS-BOLDUC Pub:RJ Tag Line:ASSISTED Color Info:FULL nosis to diagnosis, treatment, 1239554 - Composite

Tips For Healthy Aging
Quick Tips For Healthy Aging
A Q&A with Pamela Smith, Gerontologist and Coordinator of Resident Services at The Orchards at Southington
?
What do you think accounts for the fact that many of us are unprepared for the challenges of aging? I believe there are three reasons. The first reason is that often individuals view aging issues as a “normal” part of growing older. Many of us do not realize that there are resources and services that can help to enhance the quality of how we age by preventing, or at least slowing down, some negative aspects of aging. Falling and fall prevention are examples of aging issues where interventions can make a positive difference. Secondly, if people do accept that they have a need related to aging, they often do not know where to learn about or access the information or services to help them. Finally, studies have shown that even if someone knows there are potential solutions to their aging issues and know where to seek help, they may still be reluctant to look for and accept that assistance. We all know individuals in our communities who are models of healthy aging. What can we learn from them? There are certainly people who just seem to thrive and flourish as they age, and researchers are busy trying to
unlock the keys to successful aging. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, for example, is the longest, most comprehensive examination of aging ever conducted. Beginning in the 1930s, researchers have studied more than 800 individuals in an attempt to discover the behaviors that translate into happy and healthy aging. Some of the factors, like avoiding nicotine and maintaining a healthy weight and exercising, are no surprise. However, the study also found that good adjustment or coping skills and maintaining healthy relationships are more predictive of healthy aging than your cholesterol level or your income. So, attitude is a contributing factor in successful aging? Based on my experience, being open to new opportunities and actively seeking out opportunities to grow, learn and share contribute to healthy aging. That can translate to learning a language or participating in a new activity. It can also involve being open to taking advantage of the many services in the community that assist seniors. Connecticut Center for Healthy Aging is a wonderful resource for seniors and their families.
