Life Is About Stumbling Upon The Good Things, Bonitz Says

G

ood evening class of 2013, family, friends, teachers, and admin-

istrators. so where to? this basic question has in many ways defined our senior year, for many of us in the form of applying to college. the college application process is grueling and intimidating. it sinks its claws into our skin and pulls us in a thousand different directions. it forces us to dig desperately through our past in search of something to make us unique or desirable. it squeezes us into uncomfortable molds, striving to assign a label and a value. and ultimately, for many of us, it teaches how to handle rejection. as a bright-eyed, optimistic student, i decided to apply to Princeton university this year. the school requires an unusual supplement to the common app, including strange prompts like “What is your favorite movie, favorite website, favorite quote, favorite word?” i did my best to answer these cleverly and honestly, then crossed my fingers. Princeton, regrettably, sent me a cordial and well-written rejection letter a few months later. evidently, my favorite word “pomegranate” did not meet Princeton’s standards. in light of this biting rejection, i found myself wishing i was more unique, maybe a famous country music singer, a contortionist, a world-renowned balloon animal artist. But i soon realized the problem with this mindset, this pursuit of an identity appealing to Princeton. it is so easy to forget our own value. so easy to forget that even when we don’t fit the mold, when we are too small, too inexperienced, too unconfident, we are all still marvelously special. and so i looked back at my answers to the Princeton supplement with a new perspective. i was surprised by how honestly they reflected my high school experience. For my favorite website, i selected stumbleupon.com, a site that must have been invented to help students like me procrastinate. essentially it allows you to “stumble” onto any random photo, video, webpage, or news article with the click of a button. you never know if the next site will contain cute pictures of puppies, a list of the 25 awesome movies you’ve probably never seen, or the collection of awesomely awkward school pictures. in a lot of ways, high school requires us to follow a similarly convoluted path. The journey from the first day of freshman year to these last moments of senior year is rarely straightforward or predictable. We stumble into clubs, sports teams, friend groups, and electives. I joined the field hockey team

Lindsey Bonitz because i didn’t feel like playing soccer anymore. Within two years, i realized i had discovered my passion. i met a crazy girl with great hair as a terrified sophomore in chem and now she is my roommate in college. Maybe you stumbled upon the newspaper club, the school play, the teacher who wrote your recommendation, or the best friend you will keep in touch with for life. the point is, don’t be afraid to stumble. this is the time to be spontaneous, unique, unexpected, to break the mold, to change the world, and to make mistakes. We may just stumble upon ourselves. For my favorite quote, i called on my childhood memories watching Toy Story over and over again. i chose Buzz lightyear’s famous statement, “This isn’t flying, it’s falling with style!” All of us dreamt of flying. Of being the best athlete, the best singer, the best artist, the best musician. When we entered the school four years ago, we dreamt of perfection, and in some way, all of us fell short. We missed shots, we played the wrong notes, we failed tests, we made mistakes, and we were rejected by Princeton. But here we all are. We may have tripped, fallen, taken the

wrong turn and gotten lost, but we sit here today because, ultimately, we fell in the right direction. as Buzz would say, we learned to fall with style. Our lives will never be easy or straightforward. From here, we will face new challenges, new obstacles, new fears, and we will make many new kinds of mistakes. But this is nothing to regret. Perfection is boring. as we fall, we learn new ways of viewing the world. We meet new people. We solidify our values. We realize who we are and what we can accomplish. and, most importantly, we learn how to get back up. We cannot fear our inability to fly. We must embrace our ability to fall with style, for in this there is much more to learn. For my favorite movie, i chose Miracle, the story of the u.s. men’s hockey team that won gold in the 1980 Olympics. i love the movie because it demonstrates the importance of hard work and passion in the pursuit of success.

in one particular scene the players on the team do “suicides” for hours, continuing as teammates collapse and double over in pain around them. this image reminds me of the challenges we faced on the path to this moment. Many times we felt our resolve waning, but we graduate today because we did not give up. We won state titles, we created award-winning pieces of art, we sang in regional ensembles, and we put on entertaining plays every season. We passed tests, strengthened friendships, became leaders, and now we graduate high school. high school has tested us in every way, but it has also given us the opportunity to grow as people. From here we become lawyers, accountants, soldiers, doctors, and masters of trade. Our willingness to work hard will make us invincible. in the famous words of herb Brooks, the coach of the inspiring hockey team, “Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that’s what we have here tonight. that’s what we’ve earned here tonight.” We are

about to turn onto a road that is unfamiliar. at times we will be tested. We will make mistakes and we will lose our way. But as long as we learn from these failures, we will never be lost for long. rejection from Princeton was a painful realization, but from this rejection i learned something about myself. i learned that i am most successful when i am eager to stumble with an open mind, when i am not afraid to fall with style, and when i willingly devote myself to hard work. Wherever we go from here, we cannot be afraid of the mistakes, rather, we must be excited for the chance to define ourselves. Again I call on herb Brooks as i say “this is your time, now go out there and take it.” thank you and congratulations to the class of 2013.

In Eaatnd Out! Take

this is a skill we’ll need in life, because it’s important to take on all that you can, as long as you don’t give yourself a backache! lesson number two: you can actually make it from the basement to Math in five minutes. Freshmen year, i had newsprint production period two in the basement followed by geometry upstairs for period three. i remember thinking it would be impossible to make that trip in the five minutes of passing: several upperclassmen had told me so. I was terrified of being late, but too nervous to ask my teachers to leave class a little early or arrive a little late. so i decided i would simply have to make it work. as soon as i heard the bell, i took off down the hall and up the stairs. i stayed focused on my path and made my way through the mass of people in the business hallway. sure, i may have taken out a few people with my freshman backpack, but i made it to class on time. While this may not be the greatest achievement of my high school career, it taught me not to accept defeat simply based on other people’s claims. We are all capable of doing anything, if we have the right determination. lesson number three: there are effective ways to procrastinate. as high school students, we’ve all fallen victim to the beast of procrastination. it’s unavoidable. however, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, if you know We are so proud how to handle it. Over the years, i’ve of who you’ve found some excellent become, and of ways to procrastinate. all your many i’ve made creative new accomplishments. snacks for myself while putting off a lab report. You continue to i’ve cleaned my room in amaze us. order to avoid an essay. in fact, i even procrastinated studying for aP exams by writing this speech. the life lesson to take away from all of

down, we appreciate it. today is the culmination of four years of hard work and perseverance, of knowledge and wisdom. We have learned a lot throughout the course of high school, like our constitutional rights, how to write the perfect style essay, and how Boyle’s law can be used to explain your ears popping on a plane ride. however, today i don’t want to focus on the skills that we gained in class. instead, i want to talk to you about the lessons we learned in school that were not part of the curriculum—the lessons we learned from each other and from the many experiences that made up the essence of high school. lesson number one: use your locker. you all remember freshman year, when we walked around hunched over with giant backpacks. Over time, we learned to use our lockers more effectively. While this may seem like an inconsequential act, it actually mirrors real life. We each had to realize how much weight we could handle. We learned to challenge ourselves without getting overwhelmed, to lighten our load when necessary. that didn’t mean giving up on something altogether. you just stored it in your locker until you were ready to handle it.

this is balance. Balance is the key. a little procrastination won’t hurt you, as long as you get down to work eventually. lesson number four: there’s nothing wrong with making sleep your favorite hobby. While it’s great to constantly be on the go—from school work to sports to clubs to family and friends— sometimes we all need a little break. so when you get a free moment, don’t hesitate to take a nap. i used to feel guilty about this, as if i should be doing something more productive or at least more fun, but i have realized that everyone needs time to relax. there’s nothing wrong with taking a well-deserved break. Lesson number five: it’s okay to feel stupid sometimes. this is the most important thing i’ve learned in high school. i’ve realized that i will never know everything, no matter how much i study. and that is okay. We should never be scared to try new things just for the fear of not being the best. if anything, if you’re feeling unsure or maybe a little stupid at times, realize that you’ve put yourself in a new situation and congratulate yourself for taking that leap. Putting ourselves out there is the only way to keep growing, and if that means feeling a little stupid at times, so be it! these are just a few of the many lessons i’ve have learned in the past four years. along with the knowledge we’ve gained, these lessons will prepare us for the challenges that lie ahead. however, we should always remember that there is more to learn than what we read in textbooks. the most important lessons, the ones that we will continue to use for the rest of our lives, are often the ones we never expected to learn in the first place. thank you, and congratulations, once again, to all my fellow graduates and their families.

Commencement Address

Four Years Made A Big Difference, Rafey Tells Classmates

G

ood afternoon members of the cheshire high school community, guests from the cheshire Board of education, loving families, and supportive friends. it is with great pleasure that i welcome you all to the class of 2013 Graduation ceremony. and to the class of 2013, my fellow graduates, my peers, and my friends: congratulations. to say that this day is “well deserved” is an understatement. Four years. Four years have led to this day—four years of classes, and sporting events, and club meetings. Four years of getting up earlier than we’d like, and crowded hallways, and snow days. and more snow days. Four years of our lives have revolved around one place in the whole world: here. and now those four years are ending. Now we are left to ask ourselves, why were these four years so important? it’s because we’ve

grown, we’ve learned, and (for the sake of our parents) i hope we’ve matured. Four years of change later, here we are today: graduation. But today isn’t just about today. underneath all of the pomp and circumstance, today is really about that grand journey that began four years ago. today we are about to take our literal and figurative last steps as high schoolers, but we must remember to reflect on our first steps into cheshire high school, and every step that followed. Many of us still remember how we were our freshman years— nervous, uncertain, unbelievably shorter, and mildly terrified. Now, that might have seemed weird or awkward at the time but, in retrospect, all of those things were normal. We were all trying to figure out who we were, what topics piqued our interest, what hobbies we had, and which friendships we wanted developed. Freshman year was all about striking a per-

sonal balance between being like any other high schooler while still walking to the beat of our own drum. and, over time, each step we took was more confident than the last. in four years, we walked up and down those halls countless times, while also advancing towards our own aspirations. We ran with our ideas farther than we ever had before: we pushed ourselves harder than we ever had before. We heard the beat of our own drum and defined who we are in the classroom, on the stage, and on these very fields. That is what the past four years was all about, learning what it meant to be ourselves. Now that those four years of walking are over, look at how far we’ve come. The final point has been scored, the final bow has been taken, and the final paper has been written, and we have very little left to do as high schoolers. We just have our final steps. It’s these final steps that will make me nervous about graduating. Worrying about this speech, or accidently tripping on the way up here to give this speech, takes a backseat to a simple idea: in a short matter of time, we will be taking our final steps as high schoolers. And what do those final steps consist of? We walk on this stage, receive our diploma (covers), shake someone’s hand, and walk off. that’s it. that’s the end of high school. These final steps will pass by as quickly as any other steps in the past four years. so, what can we do with such little time? We have to look back on our memories, as they are the paths that we created in our tireless drive forward. We have to look back on this sea of smiling faces, who cannot be overlooked on today of all days. this day may

ood evening friends, family, faculty, staff, jeff, can we call you that? No. Ok, Mr. solan. and most importantly the class of 2013, waddup? hi, i’m dan d’albis and i’m sagar Nakrani. you may know us as the dream team, the big queso, soggy G and danny d, or maybe even as the co-presidents of your class. But regardless, we are here today to celebrate this immense accomplishment. We would like to preface this speech by thanking all of the faculty, staff, and parents who have made these past four years possible. if you all could please stand and be recognized. thank you. Now, on to you all, the students, our peers, our friends. today, we are here for you. the class of 2013! We are privileged to have the honor of representing the best senior class in cheshire, in New haven county, in connecticut, in the united states, in the world, and in the Milky Way Galaxy!!!!!!! WOO!! Nakrani speech so most of you guys are 18, except for sri who will always be 12, and you know what’s legal at 18? skydiving. Our educational career was a lot like a typical skydiving experience. Kindergarten and elementary school. Great times. it’s like

first walking into that skydiving registration building, not knowing what to expect. at the age of five, we were unwillingly and unknowingly thrusted into the educational system by the control of our parents and guardians. Now i know that a good percentage of those days were spent wondering why we were even there, another good percent was spent going on field trips, and a very small, extremely minuscule percent was spent actually doing school work. Gym class, math, arts, and crafts helped expand our knowledge in all different areas. some of us began to pick up different hobbies like playing sports and instruments, acting, or drawing. and then came middle school. yeah... we don’t really talk about Middle school. and then it happens—high school. the plane gets higher and higher, you look out of the window and things get smaller and smaller, and all of a sudden the plane stops. the door opens, your heart begins to pulse rapidly, faster and faster. around you, the sounds begin to mute. you feel dizzy, dehydrated. you can only think of the bad things that could happen, and then you do it. you decide to look out the door and see how high you are. and then....holy shish Kebabs!!!!! you don’t want to do this, you don’t want to do this. you are a freshmen trying out for that varsity sports team. you want a good role in that school play. everyone looks so big. there are people with beards. you have to write essays? But surely the instructor calms you down, ensuring that everything is safe. your parents, friends, and teachers all do the same. they have all been on the same boat as you and just want to help you out. you begin to calm down and feel more relaxed. as a sophomore you begin getting used to the high school. the workload doesn’t seem that bad, you’ve met all of these new people, and have found the activities which seem right for you. and then, you jump. You close your eyes at first but then quickly open them. you are an upperclassman. you look around. this feels amazing. the wind is rushing and roaring and you feel free. then all of a sudden, you remember the parachute.

What if it doesn’t work? What’s going to happen? Oh, man. sat’s, college applications, schoolwork, friends, sports: your mind begins to spin but is soon calmed down by the comforting voice of the instructor. “don’t worry, i got you!” you feel a huge sense of relief when he pulls the cord to bring out the parachute. you’ve received that acceptance. you know what you want to do after high school. your feet touch down, you have graduated. you’re still trying to catch your breath but you have walked across that podium with a smile on your face, some of you wanting to do it again, and you will be able to, but it will be a different type of journey. D’Albis speech john lennon was once asked a question that many of us are quite familiar with. What do you want to be when you grow up. Most of us would answer with teacher, actor, President. lennon replied, “happy.” We should take those words to heart as we move on to new and exciting venues. We have the right as americans to “life, liberty and the Pursuit of happiness,” and that is something we shan’t soon forget. i trust in each and every one of you and know that our class is going to go on and do some truly remarkable things, but always keep your happiness in the front of your mind, you never know when you are going to need it. so whether you plan on being a business ceO, the next President of the united states, or even the next Zach Galifianakis, remember the words of that late, great Beatle and always make sure that what you are doing is making you happy. as we take those next steps forward, though, remember to keep the past in mind. high school may have been the best or the worst times in our lives, or even an amorphous blob combination of the two of them, but it has shaped every part of who we are. these teachers, families, faculty, and peers have been the people whom we have surrounded ourselves with for four whole years. high school will be with us for the rest of our lives. ask your parents, they will tell you that no matter what they have done in their lives, they will never forget high school and what it meant to them. so keep the memories of this wonderful school stored in a special place because one day they may be your glory days and, as the great Bruce springsteen once said, “When she feels like crying, she starts laughin,’ thinkin’ bout Glory days.” Now as we embark on the rest of our lives, or at least across the podium, we want you to remember a few things. i know, it’s almost summer and that seems like a lot of stuff to remember but trust me, they’re important. the first would be that life isn’t going to be easy for most of us—it’s continued to page 13

Scenes From All Night Grad Party

Photos by tracey harrington

It was a fun 24 hours right after graduation, as the All Night Grad Party was held. The theme was The Cat in the Hat (above, center), played well by Mike Purcell (top), who was joined by friend Kevin Miranda. The night featured games (above) and food (top right), which had students ďŹ ling into the gym past 11 p.m. (right). Before entering, students, such as Ciera Hernandez (center right), had to take a breathalyzer. Once inside, they got to hang out with CHS Principal Jeff Solan and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio (below).

not, and we are going to have to work hard to make it to where we want to be—but always remember that everything you do in attempts to achieve your goals should be steps towards your happiness. And finally, and this is an extremely important one, you can tell it’s important because it is from the t.V. show “Modern Family,” and it goes; “When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. life will be all like...What?!!” (Phil dunphy). What we mean by this is, don’t take life too seriously! life should be about enjoying the time we have with the people we love and the things we love to do. so every once in awhile, don’t be afraid to let loose, do a crazy dance, scream at the top of your lungs, or walk up the down escalators. in other words, be happy, try to always have a good time, and just get silly. Together in closing, from the deepest depths of our hearts we thank you all for the memories and the good times—keep on keepin on and you stay classy class of 2013! We out.

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - Steve Jobs
