Valedictorian’s Speech

Life Is Like A Game Of Pokémon, Dang Tells Class “Let your inner Pikachu shock those who look down on you.”

Allen Paul/Cheshire Herald

Aohan Dang

G

ood evening, Dr. Florio, Mr. Solan, staff, academic adjudicators, fellow graduates except Rohan, family members, tired band students, siblings who were forced to come here, and Rohan. First off, I would like to say that it is a huge, huge honor…for all of you to be here listening to my beautiful voice. For the past few days, I have thought long and hard about what topics to include in this speech. My friends told me to make it amazing and continuously pressured me to start writing it. My parents told me to make my speech inspiring and thoughtful. So in the end, I decided to do what any good student should do: I went home, opened Microsoft Word, and immediately closed it in order to play a game of Pokémon. Most of us have had some experience with Pokémon, whether through the anime, the card trading game, or the electronic Nintendo DS version, regardless of

whether you have the skills to become the world’s greatest Pokémon master. There are many different types of Pokémon. Some, like Gyarados, live in the water, using dragon rage and bubble beam to strike down enemies. Others, like Eevee, live mainly in cities and are able to evolve into many different forms. With this great diversity, each Pokémon has its own idiosyncratic quality. Even a small, basic Pidgey can launch a fierce gust attack to win a Pokématch. There are many similarities between high school and a game of Pokémon. In both situations, we start from the bottom, work hard, and explore our opportunities in order to achieve the ultimate goal: to become the world’s greatest Pokémon masters. Like the 719 known Pokémon, all of us are unique and have different strengths. We have our theater kids, athletes, math-

letes, band geeks, academic geniuses, and those who make really good peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Most importantly, though, Pokémon have the capacity to grow. You can start as a tiny Charmander, develop into a Charmeleon, and finally evolve into a Charizard, using your mighty flare blitz attack to strike down your enemies. All of us have the opportunity to grow toward success, no matter where we begin. Mewtwo once said, “I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.” The catchphrase “gotta catch ‘em all” is much like our school’s mission. Students satisfy their intellectual curiosity by taking a myriad of classes, catching knowledge in all subject areas. Classes are like gym battles. Sometimes, you’ll need many full restores in order to survive. Nevertheless, you train hard to meet the prerequisites, strive through the homework, and hope that the teacher does not sing like Jigglypuff and put you to sleep. As you walk along the path of life, you may encounter other trainers. They may seek to guide you, or they may fight against you. But that’s okay. Even your enemies can teach you important life lessons. You may also encounter many roadblocks such as trees and Snorlaxes. However, this is not the time to curl up into a ball like Sandshrew and give up. Instead, chop that tree down. Wake up that Snorlax and continue. Let your inner Pikachu shock those who look down on you.

Classmates Perfect Group To Ask Question Of “Why”

efore I start, there’s just something I need to get off of my chest. Four years ago we were in a similar situation, walking across a middle school stage to receive a piece of paper saying, “We did it!” I was, and still am, a pretty die hard Los Angeles Lakers fan. I was looking through my Dodd yearbook the other day, and noticed something strange. Nearly half of the people who signed it referenced the Boston Celtics being up 3-2 over the Lakers in the finals of the NBA championship. Unfortunately, the Lakers didn’t win game 7 and become champions until after promotion, so I wasn’t able to rub it in, until now. Although the Lakers had a pretty dismal season this year, they had a better record than the Celtics, and that’s all that really matters. Thinking back four years made me think about my entire experience in the Cheshire Public Schools System (see how I brought it back?). Sure, we’re finally done staying up late studying for math tests or waking up at 6 a.m. for double period chemistry first thing in the morning, but what exactly were the past 12 years for? As I deeply pondered this question last night, I looked to the great minds of the past. What would Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein say about our time here in Cheshire? No surprise, they didn’t say anything at all. So then I thought back more recently, to December 1, 1955. Back to the day when people were expected to give up their seats on

the bus to someone of a superior skin color. Back to the day when a 42-year-old seamstress said, ‘to hell with your laws’, and refused to get up. That’s when it hit me. We’ve spent the last 12 years of our lives listening to our teachers and parents, accepting everything they have told us as fact, so that now, we can question the truth of everything we’ve been told. It seems a bit contradictory, that we would spend 12 years learning so that now we can go back and say, Good luck in ‘to hell with your journey! your laws!’ But think about it, only 1,000 years ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. Only 500 years ago, people Coach Drust and believed that

life of me I don’t know how you do it. I’ve even seen you let loose, partying over the weekend so that you’re ready to get right back to work on Monday. I’ve seen you become independent thinkers, who are educated enough to make your own choices. We should take a moment to acknowledge and thank our teachers, mentors, coaches, parents, and experiences at Cheshire High School that have transformed us into the individuals we are today. There is nothing more dangerous than conforming to some-

leeching a man of his ‘bad blood’ would cure his illness. Only 10 years ago, everyone in this audience believed there were nine planets in the solar system. I bet 50 years from now, people will be laughing at the fact we still strap metal bars on our teeth to straighten them. Progress demands that we question everything around us, and rewrite the laws we’ve come to accept. I know that we are the perfect group of young adults to do that. I’m confident that each and every one of you is capable of changing this very flawed world we live in. I’ve seen how enthusiastic and passionate you are. I’ve seen you hard at work on the field, during 7 a.m. Sunday practices. I’ve seen you giving it your all, up on stage during 6 p.m. dance rehearsals. I’ve seen you helping each other out during those near-impossible chemistry labs. I’ve seen you after school, in meetings and committees. I’ve seen you before school, in meetings and committees, and for the

thing you don’t believe in. So when someone tells you to get up and move, or to sit down and be quiet, you say, “Why should I?” When someone tells you to vote for them or buy their product, you ask, “Why should I?” Don’t be afraid of being a Lakers fan in the middle of New England. And when times get tough, stay true to yourself, put a hand over your heart, and tell it, “All is well, All is well”. My final piece of advice to you? Erase everything. Thank you, and congratulations Class of 2014.

ow. Here we are. I I don’t know that I, or any of my peers, ever thought we would make it to this day. Four years. But here we are, our last day together here as the Cheshire High School Class of 2014! I am so thankful to be able to be here before you all today, and to be able to address not only you, my peers, all of your families, but also our faculty family here as well. I’d like to start this ceremony with a quote. Worldclass trainer Ash Ketchum once said, “I want to be the very best, that no one ever was.” And that’s the reason that we are all where we are today. We entered this high school with the desire to push ourselves to our absolute limit—to not always be the best but, rather, to be

“... Had I spent my last four years in any other place than here, in Ramland, I wouldn't be before you all in this moment.” the best that we can be. Each of the last four years has held some of the most memorable moments of our short lives. Right now, I ask that you look around you. Find that one person, anyone, that means more than life itself to you. Look to them now because I promise you they are here today, whether they're in the stands, on the field, or looking down on us from up above. Look at that person and remember ev-

ery moment they've been there. Think about every moment these past four years that they've held you up when your legs couldn't carry you, who stood by your side through every single battle, and who smiled with you when you were atop the world. We all have someone. Whether that someone is your friend, your brother, your sister, even a teacher here, remember what they've meant to you and recall how they've helped you get here today. For me? When it's all over and I stand with my diploma in hand on top of the world, my mother and father will be the first ones I find—the first ones that I thank. And then I intend to find and thank everyone else that's helped me stand here today. You all know my story and my somewhat rocky past, and I honestly and truthfully believe in my heart of hearts that if I had spent my last four years in any community other than this one.... had I spent my last four years in any other place than here, in Ramland, I wouldn't be before you all in this moment. The love and compassion that is found in this school is unique. Never forget where you came from, and never forget the people that have lifted you up along the way. I love you all, congratulations CHS Class of 2014! You made it!

Finding Your Identity Means Finding Your Freedom

C

lass of 2014, congratulations on making it this far! Please allow me a little indulgence with a quick story. Like all good stories, we begin with middle school. Everyone regrets their middle school days, and I am no exception. In elementary school, everyone is more or less the same, nobody has forged their identity yet, so we were ready to find ours at Dodd. I started skateboarding. I became a skate rat. While I wasted a lot of my time, there is one important lesson that I retained. The skate park showed me that there are no truly bad people. You might not like what someone does or the choices someone makes, but that’s ok, as long as you acknowledge them as human beings. You aren’t wrong, and they’re not wrong. Just remember that everyone has a story, and sometimes you need to be a part of it to truly

“Identity is freedom. Identity gives you the chance to live a life of meaning, and a life without regrets. Don’t give in.” understand it. So high school started and, like most of you, I was still trying to figure out who I was. I decided I wanted to be cool. The only problem was that I didn’t really know what cool was. Do I start doing sports? Music? How should I talk? Who should I talk to? Unfortunately, I didn’t know the answer to any of these questions. So instead of finding the answers, I gave up—gave up on grades, gave up on friends, gave up on myself. I didn’t realize that my position was entirely my doing, that to get out of my rut I had

to be an actual person. One day over the summer before sophomore year, festering in my room, I found the film “Good Will Hunting” on Netflix. I had heard good things and my brother Rico had recommended it, so I decided to watch it. I cried. Three separate times I cried. I felt emotions I hadn’t felt all Freshman year, and I wasn’t sure what to do with them. But it’s not really what specifically made me cry in the movie that matters. What matters is that something had the capability to do this to me. That something outside of

Benjamin Saccoccio myself had the power to move me, and that I had the power to be moved. What Matt Damon and Ben Affleck indirectly taught me in that film was that I had to take responsibility for my mistakes. They awoke a passion within me, and showed me who I was. What I’m trying to say is that you need to find yourself. Figure out what you love to do, figure out who you are, and just run with it. If you’re happy with who you are, other people’s perceptions begin to disappear, and you can be whoever you want to be. Identity is freedom. Identity gives you the chance to live a life of meaning, and a life without regrets. Don’t give in. The only per-

son you should give in to is your true self. Be a nonconformist, just make sure you’re not rebelling against yourself. Find who you are, and learn to love who you are. Once you obtain your identity, you are ready to face the world. For years I struggled with who I was and I paid for it. I was bad at being a skater, and I was bad at trying to be a cool kid. But I think I’m doing a pretty good job at being me. You are all capable of achieving this freedom, so let’s leave this place and find ourselves. Find identity, find freedom. Thanks to everyone. Congratulations and goodnight.
