A New Year Brings New Opportunities, Florio Explains by Michael Torelli herald staff the temperature has been slowly dropping over the last week, a surefire sign that the school year is approaching for students in cheshire. rain or shine, the first day of school is august 29 and superintendent of the schools dr. greg Florio is excited to see the new and old faces that will occupy the classrooms for the next 10 months. and with the focus being on students, the Board of education has begun introducing new initiatives expected to help boost their learning experience. “there’s a lot going on across the district,” Florio explained. although there are no major renovations, a lot of general projects have been taking place this summer. One of the larger projects is the facelift of the cheshire high school library, which will have a layout that is “more student and user friendly.” improving the technology and changing the layout of the library will give it more of a flexible workspace, Florio explained. there will be more opportunities for small groups, individual work spaces, and class groups. “there will be a common area for the students to gather in an in-
formal setting,” Florio said. Other projects include sidewalk repairs, building repairs, carpet removal, and flooring replacements. all of these projects will be included in the capital expenditure Plan and the town’s Operating Budget. the high school’s courtyard is being addressed to make sure no water will leak into the building. aside from aesthetics, the Board of education has revamped its networking and will provide every building with wireless access when the students return from summer vacation. “We’ll have more efficient speed in terms of the internet,” Florio stated. “that’s been a nice upgrade.” With the implementation of wireless, Florio is also working on an opportunity for students to bring in their own electronic devices to work in the classroom. it is currently being researched and some of the expected kinks, such as students losing their tablets, still have to be worked out. When the program starts, it will be on a “very limited level.” the teachers will also see new upgrades to their curriculum because of the teacher evaluation system. Following a state guideline, the evaluations will provide a more structured and formulaic review of a teacher’s progress.
“We’re working with our administration and we’ll be working with the staff when they return,” Florio said. implementing the evaluations may come off as a daunting task, Florio admitted, but if the district does not introduce them at an appropriate time, the system may not work as well as planned. “i think evaluation is a great tool to improve instruction,” Florio said. “it’s a good plan, but it’s a question of timeline and schedule for implementation.” common-core standardization is also being incorporated into the school system, but Florio is unsure how it will affect this upcoming year. the schools have yet to receive their results from last spring’s connecticut Mastery test or the connecticut academic Performance test. Normal staff turnover has affected the number of teachers and administrators in cheshire, but Florio is excited to meet the newcomers. erica Bordonaro, who has been a teacher for several years, has been recommended as Marlene silano’s successor to be assistant Principal at highland school. Bordonaro must receive approval from the Board of education, which is expected to vote on the recommendation august 15. silano will start her first year at

Other staff members who have left the school system are being replaced, but Florio said he is still looking for a successor to a teacher who retired from dodd Middle school.
“One of the most important things we do is hiring,” Florio said. the cheshire Board of education goes through a very important application process, and when a new hire comes to town, there is a good induction program to make him or her feel most comfortable. Florio is ready for the school year to start, joking that the students might not share the same feelings. “i’m starting to get excited for it,” Florio said. “Before you know it, we’ll be back.”

Silano Ready For A New Chapter To Begin At Chapman by John Rook Herald Staff The boxes in Marlene Silano’s new office at Chapman School were still full and stacked high as of early August. “As you can see, I still have a lot of unpacking left to do,” the school’s new principal said, while smiling. The office resembled much of the school, with hallways filled with classroom items and large cleaning equipment scattered all around the building. Though classes weren’t scheduled to begin for another few weeks, preparation was already underway at Cheshire’s smallest elementary school, and Silano admitted that she was excited for the year to begin. “Those doors will be opening before you know it, and the hallways will be filled,” she said, grinning at the prospect. “I am looking forward to it.” Silano is beginning her first year as principal at Chapman, taking over for Russell Hinckley who left to take the same position at Doolittle School after veteran principal Sharon Weirsman retired at the end of last year. It has been a quick rise for Silano, who has never served as a principal previously and was assistant principal at Highland School for only

one year. “I have so much respect for (Superintendent of Schools) Dr. Greg Florio and I was honored to be a part of this school system as an assistant principal, I decided I wanted to do it at the next level,” she said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for me and I just feel so supported already.” Silano might be new to her position, but she’s not new to education or to Cheshire. Silano, who received a bachelor of science degree from Stonehill College and a master’s in school counseling from Southern Connecticut State University, spent

the 1996/1997 year as an intern at Highland School. There, she was not only able to learn about her profession from experienced faculty but she also became familiar with the Cheshire School System. Yet, Silano’s career has mostly been spent in higher education. After serving as a school counselor at Rochambeau Middle School in Southbury for a number of years, Silano spent almost a decade teaching at the university level, first at Southern as part of the Counseling and Psychology Department and then at the University of St. Joseph in the Department of Counseling and Family Therapy.
“It was great work,” said Silano. “I had the chance to visit a lot of school districts and I worked as a consultant to a lot of districts.” However, during that time, Silano admits that “a lot of people in my life were saying I should go in the (administrative) direction,” so Silano decided to go back to school—Sacred Heart University— to get her educational leadership certification in education. Afterwards, while looking for a job at the local level, she found out that Highland was seeking an assistant principal. “It felt like I was back where it all started,” said Silano. “That one year at Highland was great. The staff was so amazing. It was a difficult choice (to leave higher education) but being that it was Highland made it a lot easier.” When Silano joined the administration last year, she wasn’t thinking about climbing the ladder within the district, especially so soon. “I thought I would enjoy four or five years at Highland,” she admitted. However, when Weirsman decided to retire and Hinckley took her spot at Doolittle, the opportunity arose for Silano to be promoted. “I had to take it,” she said. Silano believes there are similarities between teaching at the elementary school level and higher education, though students are at
very different educational stages. At Chapman, students are beginning their educational careers and are open to what is being taught to them. It’s the same at the university level, Silano said, where students are being groomed for careers and are interested in absorbing as much information as possible. However, she knows that there will be some issues along the way. “The challenges you expect are never the ones that arise,” she said. “You have to be ready for anything, and I will tackle those challenges with integrity and grace.” The support of other administrators in the School District will also play an important role, as Silano said she knows that, if she reaches out for help, it will be gladly offered. For now, however, she is getting ready for the opening of the school year. She’s met faculty and staff and reached out to many Chapman student families. “I think it’s really important to get to know the people who make this a school, and that includes the teachers, the students, and their families,” she said. She’s also excited to be part of a district where everyone “strives for excellence.” “In Cheshire, there is a desire to do it the right way,” she said. “There is no cutting corners.”

Don’t Break The Bank When Shopping For Back To School
Parents often note that kids seem to grow like weeds. Pants that once reached to the tops of a youngster’s feet quickly become too short, while once-loose shirts may soon become too snug. Many parents find themselves regularly in children’s clothing
expensive, families need not bust their budgets when shopping for kids’ clothing. By shopping smart and concentrating on fashion staples, it’s easier to stretch money further. * Spread out purchases. Shopping early allows parents to make the most of sales. Warm weather clothing generally goes on sale in July to make room for new fall lines. Considering the first few months of school still may be warm, short-sleeved shirts will still have utility and are generally less expensive than sweaters and sweatshirts. Staggering purchases also enables parents to develop a clothing allowance each and every month instead of having one large bill at a certain point in the year. Parents can even add to their children’s wardrobes during the holiday season, when clothes tend to get reduced again for holiday sales. * Don’t discount hand-medowns. #It’s trendy to recycle clothing and also to be environmentally conscious by putting items to good use again and again. Aside from you and your wallet, no one will know if your child is wearing a secondhand pair of pants or a brand new pair. Many school moms are anxious to swap clothing with others to lessen their own financial burdens with children’s clothing. Start a clothing swap with a group of friends, and you may find you have more than you need in the way of clothes for the kids.
departments stocking up on the basics, which can put quite a dent in already stretched-thin budgets. Although children’s wardrobes are added to at various times of the year, the bulk of shopping occurs just before the school year begins. Though clothing can be
* Take stock of what you already have.# How many times have you run out to the grocery store for a missing ingredient only to find that very item buried at the back of the pantry? The same thing happens with kids’ clothes. Before taking kids clothes shopping, take inventory of their closets. Have little ones try on clothes to see which items still fit and which can be discarded or donated. Make a list of the items you need to cut down on impulse spending at the store. * Invest in the right high-quality pieces. Spending a fortune for a trendy pair of pants that may end up getting ruined on the playground is not the best way to shop for kids’ clothing. However, investing in a quality pair of shoes that will last much of the year is a good investment. Know when to splurge and when it’s okay to shop at the discount store. * Stock up on staples. A straight-leg cut of jeans, some solid colored polo shirts and an A-
line dress or skirt are some classic foundation pieces for children’s wardrobes. Such items tend to last longer than trendy items that may only last a few months before the next trend arrives. * Learn to layer. Layering items can make pieces look like new by putting them together in different combinations. Layering a summer T-shirt under a fall hoodie gets use out of two different season’s worth of clothes. It also enables kids to be comfortable during unpredictable weather. * Leave it to the kids. Parents often worry about what other parents will think of their own children’s clothing. Children do not typically worry about such things until their preteen or teenage years. You may spend less money on clothing simply because your child has a few favorite shirts and pants he or she wears over and over. That’s less laundry for you and less money you have to spend on new clothes.

trips and falls on the playground may account for the majority of injuries that send school children to the nurse’s office. But backpacks cause their fair share of injuries as well. the u.s. consumer Product safety commission estimates there are more than 7,300 backpack-related injuries per year. children routinely carry more than the recommended weight in school backpacks and, compounding the problem, also carry their bags incorrectly. the american academy of Pediatrics and other medical agencies recommend that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of the child’s body weight. however, this figure should be adjusted based on a child’s fitness level and strength. that means that the average seven-year-old second grader who weighs between 55 and 60 pounds should be carrying no more than 11 to 12 pounds in his or her backpack. a backpack that is too heavy may cause *red marks on the shoulders or back from the straps *tingling or numbness in the arms and back *changes in posture when wearing the backpack, and *pain anywhere in the back. to compound these problems, which also may include nerve damage resulting from pressure on nerves in the shoulders, chil-
dren should lighten their loads and carry backpacks correctly. the following tips are some additional ways youngsters can prevent backpack-related injuries. * carry only necessary items. children should only carry what is required for that particular school day in their backpacks. if teachers routinely have students carry home many heavy books, parents can consult with the teachers to see if there are other options. * distribute weight evenly. items in the backpack should be spread out to distribute the weight across the entire back. heavier items should be at the bottom of the pack. * use both straps. using only one strap shifts the backpack
weight to one side, causing the back and shoulders to strain. Many orthopedists have reported treating children with back or shoulder pain as the result of carrying backpacks incorrectly. * choose the correct backpack size. the size of the backpack should match the scale of the child and should rest evenly in the middle of the child’s back. * lift safely. children should lift their backpacks by bending their knees and lifting to protect their backs. there are some safety features parents can look for when purchasing backpacks. a padded back reduces pressure on the muscles and can be comfortable, while compression straps make the backpack more sturdy.

Please note that the busing information may fluctuate; the most up-to-date information can be found on the cheshire Public schools’ website. 1. all bus route stop times are approximate. students should be at their appropriate bus stops approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. the bus will not stop if the student is inside the house, garage, or on the front porch. Bus schedules for cheshire Public schools for the 2013/2014 school year are established according to the enrollment information available to us as of aug. 8. the bus schedules are subject to revision due to enroll-

Board of education Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as
economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 6. in addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of education: Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to, from, and at the bus stop and to and from the school assigned. Please note that a parent, guardian, or responsible older sibling must be at the assigned bus stop of a kindergarten student or student with special needs when the bus picks up or delivers the student to and from school. 7.
