artlem park is usually the home to various sporting activities on a saturday afternoon . Whether it’s youth baseball occupying the fields or a Cheshire high school practice session, bartlem park is always bustling with activity in the fall . this saturday, the area will again be inundated with people, but this time no sports are on the schedule . the cheshire Fall Festival and marketplace, sponsored by the cheshire chamber of commerce, is on tap . Now in its 24th year, the Fall Festival is one of the largest events held in cheshire on an annual basis . On saturday, sept . 8, thousands of people will descend on bartlem park for the event that includes craft vendors, food, drinks, fun, games, and fireworks. “this events seems to grow every year,” explained chamber president sheldon dill . “the participation last year was an all-time high . there is no reason it won’t be the same this year .” the chamber of commerce and a committee of nearly 20 people plan the Fall Festival throughout the year . While the chamber’s name is on the event, Dill reflected that it’s really a community event and not a chamber expo . “through the years, it has transformed into a town event,” dill stated . “this isn’t just a chamber of commerce event any longer .” What began as a small gathering in the town hall parking lot has turned into a must-attend event for many residents, both in cheshire

and surrounding communities . more than 6,000 people are estimated to have attended last year’s Festival, a new attendance record . the business community is on display at various booths across the park . business owners highlight their companies with information for those who pass by . in addition, there is a craft fair where dozens of artists will be selling their creations . the Kiwanis carnival will also be ongoing throughout the weekend and the annual hot dog eating contest, sponsored by blackie’s, will surely draw a crowd . the Ymca will have its Kid Zone set up and there will also be live music on the stage . When the sun sets, a dazzling display of colorful fireworks will illuminate the sky . something new this year is that the event will serve as a fundraising effort for the cheshire community Food pantry . there will be a donation area set up so people can drop off non-perishable food items to be donated to the local pantry . “that’s something new for us,” dill said . also, as the cheshire Fire department is celebrating its 100th anniversary, there will be a special ceremony to honor the volunteers during Fall Festival . “it will be a fun time,” dill remarked . Fall’s The Best Time To Start A Backyard Pool Project

M

any times, we at prospect pools are contacted toward the end of the swimming season as to when the best time is to change a pool liner or begin a new in-theground pool project . the fall is an excellent time to take a look and plan for what you want to have in place for the next summer season . One advantage to fall pool construction is that the temperature has cooled . also, you are not dealing with the rainy

spring season which can not only delay construction because of the rain but also delay your project because of higher water tables that can leave your yard inaccessible for days to weeks . Other advantages to a fall season pool project include pricing, the ease of landscaping (it’s a great time for growing your lawn), and less stress as you won’t be under the gun to have the pool up and running right away . if you are thinking of renovating your pool or have put off wellneeded repairs, the fall is a great time to consider undertaking the project . since you are not swimming, there is no downtime while your pool is being re-

paired; whereas, if you do repairs your winter pool closin the spring, you may be delayed ing . always keep an and end up with some time when eye out for children your pool is not usable . and pets around the With the economy the way it pool area no mathas been many have put off their ter what season . if you projects but with swimming rec- empty your pool it does not reation consumers should weigh mean the pool is safe . how long these repairs can be put We particularly love the fall off, especially if there are safety season and would be happy to considerations . help anyone with their deci- prospectpoolsllc .com for more Finally, keeping safety in mind, sion to renovate or start a new information, or call us at (203) consider using a safety cover for pool project . Kiwanis Carnival Offers Plenty Of Family Fun

T

he Kiwanis Club of Cheshire will hold its annual carnival on Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8 at Bartlem Recreation Area on Route 10, across from Cheshire High School. Hours are from 6 p.m. to closing on Friday and from 10 a.m. to closing on Saturday. Sunday is the rain date. The carnival has a variety of family rides for young and old, and is one of the club’s major fundraising events each year. The money raised by the Kiwanis Club goes back into the community to support many youth-oriented activities, such as youth sports teams, leadership training programs, reading programs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, an annual bike safety program, and $5,000 in scholarships

for graduating high school students pursuing higher education. This community service organization also supports many senior citizen activities. The rides at the carnival are being provided by Marenna Amusements, LLC. On Saturday, the Carnival will be held in conjunction with the annual Cheshire Festival & Marketplace, sponsored by the Town of Cheshire and Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, also being held at Bartlem Recreation Area. Come and join in the family fun on both days! In the photo at right, (from left) Sam Simione, Hannah Salvietti and Abby Salvietti were among the many who enjoyed the popular rides at last year’s Kiwanis Club Carnival.

Festival continued from page 2 community, Dill pointed out that there are businesses on display from the surrounding areas along with individual attendees. Whether it’s to see the crafts or cars, to listen to music and grab some food, or to hang out under a firework-illuminated sky, people flock to the Festival. “I am really proud of this event. It shows off the entire community well,” Dill said. Even with little more than a week left before the event date, Dill said the Chamber was still getting phone calls from businesses and inquiries from the public about Fall Festival. Every year a lot of planning goes into ensuring the Festival is a good time for both the young and old. Dill said he couldn’t help but feel excited as the weekend nears. “I think everyone is excited for the event. It’s nice to see all the enthusiasm and the people who come back,” Dill said. “It’s really a fun day for the entire town.” The 2012 Fall Festival and Marketplace is this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 10 a.m with the craft show. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday. For more information, contact the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce at (203) 272-2345.
