Kiwanis Carnival A Perennial Fall Festival Favorite

Michael Torelli/Cheshire Herald

Last year, Harper Hanlon enjoyed taking a spin on a tug boat ride at the Kiwanis Carnival, which is sure to be a popular attraction at the 2017 Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival and Marketplace as well.

Hours are from 6 p.m. to closing tonight and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to closing on Saturday. The carnival rides are provided by Imperial Shows. The carnival has a variety of family rides for young and old, and is one of the club’s major fundraising events each year. The money raised by the Kiwanis Club goes back into the community to support many youth-oriented activities, such as youth sports teams, leadership training programs, reading programs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, an annual bike safety program, and $3,000 in scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing higher education. This community service organization also supports many senior citizen activities. Kiwanis International celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. The community service organization was formed in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan and today has clubs with volunteer members across the globe who are dedicated to carrying out the organization’s primary goal of “serving the children of the world.” The local Kiwanis Club of Cheshire invites you to join and take part in the fun and rewarding experience of volunteer service to your Cheshire commuSee CARNIVAL, page 5

or years, Sally watched her parents raise their family, grow their businesses, and support their neighbors right here in Cheshire—a life of contribution and connectivity that resonated deeply with her as a young girl. Sally later spent years working at R.W. Hine Ace Hardware, the (best) local hardware store where, unbeknownst to Sally, her real es-

Having spent her early life helping people fix problems, Sally’s love of Cheshire and innate understanding of making a house a home blossomed into a business rooted in community, knowledge and trust. Advice From Paws Pet Resort & Spa

P

ets are a part of the family and depend on you to keep them safe. It is very important for pet owners to be prepared in the case of a disaster. Take these simple steps to be ready. Every pet owner should have an emergency kit prepared. This kit should include anything your pet may need: a copy of medical records, leash, collar, recent photos, food,

bowls, water, litter and litter boxes, care instructions, and items of comfort. Make sure your pet is always wearing identification tags that include your name, address, and phone number. Keep your pet up to date on vaccinations with a copy of the documentation on hand. If a disaster strikes and you must evacuate, bring your pet with you. It is important to have a plan of action to be able to evacuate quickly. Only service dogs are allowed into Red Cross shelters, so it is very important to be aware of your options. The venue has been expanding ever since 2008, offering more shows each year and drawing new visitors to the community. Coming in May of 2018, Nelson Hall will welcome back one of the very first acts they presented in the professional series, “Triple Espresso—a highly caffeinated comedy,” to the delight of many patrons who have repeatedly requested its return. “Bringing ‘Triple Espresso’ back is significant because it was the catalyst for the entire theater project. Our CEO, Ron Dischinger, had a vision to bring one of his favorite productions to our stage. That show was ‘Triple Espresso’ and it launched this whole program back in 2010,” recalls Theater Manager Rachele Patrignelli. “We’re excited to present it again for new audiences.” Other productions in the upcoming season include tribute concerts to Jackson Browne, Buddy Holly, and Glen Campbell, as well as classic country, comedy, musicals, and more. Prospect Eye Doctor Part Of Mission Medical Team

S

ervice and community-building is a calling that Dr. Ronicha Azard always felt led to be a part of. “I grew up in a Christian home,” Dr. Azard said. “From the beginning, my mom and dad have rooted Christian values in me about serving others and being the hands and feet of Jesus in the way we live.” So it was no surprise when this optometrist, only a year into practice, decided to travel to the impoverished sugar cane villages near La Romana, Dominican Republic where she provided medical assistance and eye care to the people there. Dr. Azard, a 30-year-old eye doctor with Vision Associates of Prospect, found herself in a sugar workers’ village— known as “bateyes”—in a

The First Baptist Church of Wallingford, along with other mission groups in the Northeast, have sponsored the trips since 1990 to build schools and churches, as well as

provide medical attention and other services to impoverished workers near La Romana. While in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Azard worked in a medical clinic that traveled to different bateyes in the area. It was the first time for an optometrist on the mission’s team, therefore, it was the first time eye care services were provided. “Prior to my visit, all they had were these random glasses and they would say, ‘Just pick one you can see out of,’” Dr. Azard said. Dr. Azard said there was an outbreak this year of bacterial conjunctivitis, most commonly referred to as “pink eye.” She was able to help treat those infected with medication drops she had brought with her on the trip and with donations from the Good Samaritan Hospital, which was also built by The First Baptist Church of Wallingford and other North American mission groups and donors. Dr. Azard expressed, “It was one of those experiences where I felt I needed to be there. It was almost as if God said, ‘This was your year to be there,’ because

When The First Baptist Church of Wallingford first sent missionaries to the Dominican Republic in 1990, there were only about five people on the trip. Whippersnapper’s Kids Are Family

W

hippersnapper’s Play Gym offers extraordinary programs that help children develop confidence and self-esteem through unique activities. We have classes for ages 6 months to 4 years old that encourage growth of fine and gross motor skills and social development. Our birthday parties are fun for kids up to age 12 and completely stress-free for adults! Our team takes care of every detail, including facilitating games and serving and cleaning up the food. Parents can enjoy the party and interact with their guests while we handle it all! We are also closed to the public during your party which makes for a much more personal and united experience for everyone. Our Open Play times are for all ages and do not require any commitment or membership. Just stop in, pay the low admission price and stay for as long as you wish within our open play times. During the summer and school holidays, we run a day camp for children ages 3–8 that is licensed by the State of Connecticut. Our camp is very flexible, as we do not require any minimum enrollments—you pick the days. We have our indoor, airconditioned play area and a fenced-in outdoor area with a water sprinkler. Whippersnapper’s Play Gym customers are family. We love watching your children grow and being part of the Cheshire community. The best part of our day is when families enter the gym as strangers and leave as friends. Building a strong community and support system for families is invaluable to us. Come join our family!

Join St. Peter’s Celebration

O

n Sunday, Sept. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m., St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will host a gala Renewal Celebration and the entire Cheshire community is invited. The celebration marks the beginning of a new “academic” year and the parishioners’ renewed commitment to worship, learn and serve together. It also celebrates the completion of several significant renewal projects, including comprehensive restoration of the exterior of the historic brick church in the center of Cheshire. For months, scaffolding and cranes have circled the building, enabling craftspeople to repoint, repair and clean the bricks. For the past nine months, the exquisite historic windows have been carefully restored and repaired by stained glass

experts from the Willet Hauser Architectural Glass Company in Winona, Minnesota. Additionally, beautiful new red front doors welcome all. Iinside the sanctuary, St. Peter’s has restored its classic pipe organ for an impressive quality of sound— and added a second organ console on the main floor. It is time for a community celebration. Come to St. Peter’s to see, hear and experience these improvements. There is no charge to attend. There will be music, window tours, and food and beverages in the parish hall. Bring the entire family— all are welcome. The most important goal is the renewal of community fellowship. Be sure to visit us at the Fall Festival and our website at www.stpeterscheshire. org.
