School District Ready To Launch Full-Day Kindergarten Florio Explains What To Expect In 2014/2015 by Michael Torelli Herald Staff

here are still some odds and ends to be wrapped up before August comes to a close, ensuring that students returning to Cheshire schools will have no obstacles when re-entering class. However, for Cheshire’s youngest learners, this year comes with new territory, as they will be placed among the district schools with fellow first-through-sixth graders due to the implementation of full-day kindergarten. Classrooms are still being prepared for the full-day curriculum, which was approved during the Town’s operating budget cycle in April. Minor construction changes are needed prior to the students’ return, but will likely be completed well before school starts. “Having full-day is going to be a very interesting transition for us, and one that I’m very excited about,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg

Florio stated. As of July 28, 225 students were enrolled for kindergarten. Approximately 4,560 students are enrolled overall, Florio said, and he expects that both numbers will fluctuate prior to the first day of classes. One of the biggest changes regarding full-day will be at Darcey School, which, up until now, had been home to all kindergarten students. However, because sessions had been split into morning and afternoon classes, the school did not require a kitchen but, with the new schedule, the District has installed a kitchen area that is equipped to warm food items and has also purchased a pre-owned van to be used as a food transportation vehicle that will deliver meals from Chapman School to Darcey. “All the preparations are certainly well underway,” Florio said. The Waterbury Road school has undergone upgrades outside as well, as the driveway has been paved and equipped with a new access route installed to allow for delivery of lunches. Six new teachers and six instructional assistants have been hired for full-day kindergarten and, before school starts, a teacher orientation will be held to discuss the changes to the curriculum. Full-day kinder-

garten employees will be the only brand-new faces in Cheshire, Florio explained. Approximately 14 teachers retired after taking advantage of the District’s offered retirement incentive. Although Florio has not yet finalized the amount, he said the District will most likely save approximately $300,000 because of the incentive. For those students who have moved well beyond kindergarten, the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) should be underway this year, Florio said. After implementing the field test during the last school year, SBAC has worked out the final touches and will likely be used this year for those in grades three through eight, and grade 11. “The real test is supposed to be somewhat more individualized,” Florio explained. “Depending on how students answer a question dictates what the next questions are.” Should a student show mastery of the subject, SBAC will not repeat similar questions. However, for those who did not accurately answer, a corresponding question will follow. Both faculty and students now have experience with SBAC and will be prepared come next spring. The administration has more time to

Technology A Must For Students computers, laptops, chromebooks, tablets, and even smartphones. assignments may require that students use the internet, and many of today’s teachers create their own websites where they list assignments or post links to supplemental materials. students may have to confer with teachers via email or share materials with classmates. * Word-processing applications: Whether students are writing a 20page term paper or have to type up a short summary for a homework assignment, eventually they will need access to word-processing software that includes basic typing, editing and desktop publishing functions. Many computer software bundles come with a word processor pre-installed. if not, software is available for purchase or parents can download free shareware. examples of word-processing software include Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, textMaker, corel Write, and google docs. * high-speed internet: households that have not yet upgraded to digital internet services are well behind the times. Many cable and fiber optic television providers now offer television, internet and phone bundles for reasonable fees. compared to the dial-up services and initial coaxial internet of yesteryear, today’s internet speeds are light years ahead. students who need to stream

movies or other content or upload and download large picture or text files often find high-speed internet invaluable. * digital planners: Many devices come with calendars and planner functions built in, and those that don’t can often be upgraded by simply downloading an app that performs such functions. a calendar is a handy tool for students who need to keep current on assignments and tests, extracurricular activities and other important dates to remember. students may want to lean toward a calendar app that is integrated across many platforms. this way calendar events can be synched and viewed on phones, laptops and tablets. * Phones:#smartphones are akin to mini computers capable of more functions than one can imagine. Kids can use their phones to get a head start on homework assignments or to email teachers if they forget an assignment at school. in addition, students who have their own smartphones can easily contact their parents in case of emergencies, and parents can rest easy knowing their kids are always just a phone call or text message away. depending on the courses they take, students may need additional gadgets, such as graphing calculators, scanners and printers. Parents can speak their kids’ teachers to determine which devices will support lessons students are learning in the classroom.

hopping for back-to-school supplies was once limited to picking up a few folders, spiralbound notebooks and assorted writing implements. But today’s students need much more, including a variety of technological gadgets, to keep up with their classmates. technology is now an integral part of many classrooms, where internet-ready devices such as tablets, computers and smartboards are part of daily lessons. although some educators believe overuse of such devices in the classroom can have a negative impact on students and make it more difficult to capture and hold students’ attention, many feel that technology integrated into the curriculum improves students’ learning processes and outcomes, noting that interactive media and use of technology are conducive to project-based learning. Many students already know how to browse the internet, create blogs or manipulate photos. But they may not know how to make use of digital resources with regard to their education. students cannot learn such lessons unless they are equipped with the tools to facilitate digital learning. Parents who want their youngsters to embrace technology as part of their education may want to consider the following devices. * internet-ready devices: internet-ready devices include desktop

High School Ready For New Year

cheshire High school Principal Jeff solan it is with great enthusiasm that we welcome our class of 2018 to cheshire high school. the sophomore, junior, and senior classes have all set a high bar, but will also prove to be wonderful mentors on your path to success. the faculty, staff, and administration have been working throughout the summer to make sure that you have a wonderful experience this year. in the life of a school, summer is a time for rebirth. We have replaced classroom and hallway lighting with bright and energy efficient led lights. the West gym is currently being renovated and upon completion will have a new floor and new heating and air conditioning! the improved energy efficiency in the new unit allows us to run both heat and air conditioning at a lower cost than the heat cost us on its own. cheshire high school has identified multiple goals to assist our students, staff, and families in helping us reach our mission of the enhancement of student understanding. We are embracing the demands of the common core state standards which set a high bar for not only content mastery, but application of the cheshire Performance standards. as we make strides in curriculum development to challenge our students in new ways,

we will also be working on strategies to provide feedback to our students about their mastery of the critical performance standards. Making strides in these areas will only help enrich the tremendous reputation we hold dear. Please remember that many of our upper classmen and teacher volunteers have been planning for a comprehensive orientation for all grade 9 students and those new to us on Wednesday, aug. 20. We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming you back to school for another outstanding year!

states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 6. In addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of Education: Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from and at the bus stop and to and from the school assigned. Please note that a parent, guardian, or responsible

older sibling must be at the assigned bus stop of a kindergarten student or student with special needs when the bus picks up or delivers the student to and from school. Students in grades one through 12 will be dropped off at their bus stop regardless of whether or not a parent or designated individual is waiting for them. 7. When Cheshire Schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the Wilcox Tech and Sound School buses will not transport students to Wilcox Technical School or the Sound School, even if either school opens that day. Regarding all schools, in the event a delay or cancellation is not called, parents are encouraged to keep children home if they deem local neighborhood conditions unsafe for travel to schools.

Reacclimate Students To School T

he dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends. For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organizing carpools with fellow parents. reacclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer. •establish a routine over the last few weeks of summer. summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, parents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their kids' lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly. Plan morning activities so kids can readjust to waking up early each day. in addition, serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time you typically serve it during the school year so kids' bodies can begin to readjust as well. •take kids along when shopping for school supplies. if you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming

school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input. •Monitor or assign summer reading. Many students are given summer reading lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming coursework. Parents should monitor kids' progress on such reading lists and even discuss the books with their kids when possible. read the books along with them if you think it will help engage them. if kids were not assigned summer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books, rewarding kids when they finish a new book. Kids who read throughout the summer may be more likely to start the school year off on the right foot than those who don't crack a book all summer.

•encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many school-aged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even nonathletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell of the year rings. theater programs may begin auditions or encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year. the arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters readjust to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.
