ood evening friends and family, faculty and staff, and, most importantly, my fellow classmates of the Class of 2015. I’d like to start by saying that it’s a huge honor for me to stand here today. I most definitely wouldn’t be (here) if not for my family, my friends, my teachers, and my EpiPen. Without too many exceptions, the past few weeks have been a relaxing time for us all. There’s been plenty of time to reflect on the last four years, which we’ve spent largely in high school. Ah yes, CHS. We’ve all had bad times and good times, but whether those times were more bad than good or more good than bad for any of us, I think that we can all agree that we’ll look back on them as personally significant. I know that I’ll always fondly recall band class shenanigans, making video projects, cross country meets, math meets, secretly making bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches in school with some physics class friends, and editing the American classic “Quiet in the Library.” Anyways, I was told to give a speech on a topic of my choice. Unfortunately, I’m not half the Pokémon master that my predecessor was. I also don’t think that I have any authority to give any type of inspirational advice just because I bribed all of my teachers these past four years. Instead, I’m just going to talk about how I really feel about graduating. I’m sure there’s a part of us all that wants to get out of here. But, quite frankly, the prospect of the next few years of life terrify me to the point where I’ve considered becoming a super-senior. Eighteen is when Lebron James made his NBA debut, 20 is when Bill Gates dropped out of college to

ger world, but that doesn’t make us any smaller. Ultimately, yes, I’m still terrified but, at the same time, I’m going to do my best to stay optimistic . We value human lives well lived not for the completed narrative, but because they embody a performance—a rising to the challenge of having a life to lead. The final value of our lives is adverbial, not adjectival—a matter of how we have actually lived, not of a label applied to the final result.

It is the value of the performance, not anything that is left when the performance is subtracted. It is the value of a brilliant dance or dive when the memories have faded and the ripples died away. So, Class of 2015, as we go on our separate paths, no matter what we end up doing or achieving in our lives beyond high school, I hope that we’ll all live such that we make each other proud to have been Rams together. Thanks for all the great times.

Jeffrey Wang found Microsoft, and 21 is when Newton began developing calculus. I’m not saying in any way that I or anyone should aspire to be like these achieved people, but it sure is weird knowing that we’ll all very soon be of the age when people start to get so intimidating. In this graduating class, we have incredible musicians, athletes, artists, academic whizzes of various subjects. But we’re moving on to a world where there will be countless people who will undoubtedly be similar to even those of us that shine the brightest. I know that, at least personally, I fear that I’m going to become irrelevant. The accomplishment I’ve felt the most proud of in my life happened in the third grade, when I won the schoolwide spelling bee against 30 or so

fellow pools of sweat, and it’s all been downhill from there. But as I walked through the halls of Cheshire High for the very last times as a senior, I noticed something. Everyone I know in our grade has added to my high school experience. Everyone has played some role in everyone else’s time here, whether as classmate, teammate, or even just hallway acquaintance. We’ve watched each other grow from frightened freshmen into the kings and queens of the school. We may be uncertain about who we are or how we measure up against others, but we’ve all been personally important to each other in one way or another, probably more so than Lebron or Bill Gates will ever be. Sure, we’re moving on to a big-

the teachers who dropped everything and helped speed-edit my college essay the afternoon before it was due, or the teachers who let the definition of “due Monday” go from “due Monday in class” to “due Monday by the end of school” to “due Monday at midnight shared over Google docs.” This brings me to gratitude. In addition to the reflection and nostalgia tonight, there’s also an unpayable debt of gratitude. We haven’t gotten here all on our own. We owe our standing here to teachers. Thank you for the knowledge and guidance. Thank you for being professors of your subject, generous landlords after school, and extra-hardworking advisors for clubs. To the guidance counselors and administration, thank you for providing the behind-the-scenes work and support. To friends, thank you for keeping me sane sometimes, and giving up and crashing and burning with me at other times. I’m so lucky to have had your shoulders to lean on. To peers, I strongly believe that more than half of the thinking and learning I’ve done has been inspired by being with you smart, thoughtful people. Thank you. It’s exciting and scary at the same time to realize that tonight is a turning point. In a couple of hours we will no longer be students at Cheshire High School, but free-floating graduates in that

Class Of 2015 Has Different Voices To Offer World

Olivia Palmer

ood evening administrators, faculty, family, friends and, especially, graduates. I extend my congratu-

lations to all of us, Class of 2015. Over the last four years, we have spent so many hours learning formulas, philosophies, and

facts. We have been focused on our goals of getting those good grades. But I hope that, along the way, you didn’t forget that high school is not only about memorizing random facts or staying up all night to cram in that essay. More than that, high school is about finding your voice, and by now I am sure each one of you has a unique and special one. Our voices are more than how loudly or softly we speak. They are more than how distinctly we pronounce our words. Instead, our voices define who we are, what we believe, and what we hope to become. You might be wondering, “But how, at some point during these four hectic years, did we manage to find these voices?” To that I say, your voice has been found in many different places. You have found it on the athletic field, on the stage, on the tip of a pencil or paintbrush, in between the pages of a book, or through the lens of a camera. You may have stumbled upon it without even knowing. We have not found our voices all by ourselves. I am sure that,

F i n e

for all of us, at least one person helped us along the way. Throughout the past four years it has been our families, friends, and teachers who have helped us find these voices. Whether it was through a heated political debate at the dinner table, through a genuine heartto-heart with a supportive friend, or during a classroom discussion, each and every one of our voices has been shaped by our loved ones. Our graduating class is filled with truly amazing people and, in turn, truly amazing voices. These voices have spoken through academic growth, athletic victory, artistic achievement, and more. Over time these voices have helped us achieve new heights, and I am confident that you agree our class, the Class of 2015, is the one that has spoken the loudest. As we take our places in the world beyond high school, we must all continue to speak excitedly about which we are passionate. We must use our words wisely when we hope to make a powerful impact on those around us.

And perhaps the most important piece of advice I can give you, never forget to use your voice to speak up for someone who might not be given one. The 17-year-old human rights advocate Malala Yousafzai once said, “When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” Here, today, we have 389 graduates. That means we have 389 voices at the ready. All it will take is at least one of us to make a difference, but I am confident that many of us will. Remember that, as you move on to the next chapter, your voice can be that difference. I have no doubt that each and every one of us will excel next year, whether it be in college, a career, or the military. This is truly an exceptional group of students and, together, we can use our voices to change the world. I am so proud of this graduating class. It has truly been an honor to serve as your class president. I am now a better person for having known you all. Thank you.

ello, I’m Charles Biddiscombe and I’ve spoken to my class several times—from failed presidential campaigns to surprise plugs for my less-than-appropriate novel. Today will be the last time I address my classmates as students, and it will certainly be the most meaningful. It’s been said that the world is changed not by individuals but by people acting together—by the force of communities. The Cheshire High School community is part of a unique generation that is occasionally misunder-

stood. But I see our generation as something of amazing potential. In the past four years I have been awed by students whose minds rival those of historical heroes. We’ve been produced by tumultuous times, but along the way have been cradled by the hands of our community and our dedicated parents. Our generation, unique in its progress, is overflowing with activists, scholars, and innovators, who possess an unabashed want for discovery. This is so abundantly clear in the accomplishments and aspirations of our class.

I’ve always been amazed at how talented and hardworking my peers are. We’ve become nationally recognized musicians, champion debaters, star athletes, and social justice warriors. And within our student body we have always promoted these ambitions, congratulated each other on successes, and assisted each other in

times of mistake. Cheshire High is truly a wonderful community and I could not be more grateful to have had the privilege to spend the last four years here. But now we’re all gathered to say goodbye to our school, to move on to the next chapter. When I think of the future and what may await us, I often look to the past. Race, the invention of the computer, and now we have twerking and Kanye and “Quiet in the Library! “ Now, look forward into the adult lives we’ve yet to live you’ll see that incredible change awaits us! The possibilities are endless, and I know that we here at Cheshire High will lead the way into this beautiful future. In the last century we sent men to our moon and, in the next, we’ll stand on every moon. Decades ago the world was cured of smallpox. In the future, we’ll do away with all illness. In the past, food was brought to many. In years to come, we will feed the world. That’s the future waiting to be made and brought to life by us. Wherever we go, whatever role we play, we will always know that it all began here. It began with our parents constantly checking POWER school, our parents driving us to school, then panicking as we began to drive ourselves. It began with teachers who sparked our academic curiosity with riveting lessons and discussions: With the literature teacher who volunteered to help run an off-beat club or the Latin teacher who went out of her way to host an annual Roman banquet for the past four decades. From the class of 2015 I say thank you to all the teachers, administrators, custodians, and hall monitors who were doing their job. And thank you to the parents and families who helped bring us this far! To conclude, in many years time when we think back to our youth in Cheshire, from our beautiful school, to the not-sofunctioning pool, to our neverending supply of pizza places and pharmacies we’ll smile and think, that’s where it all began. Regardless of where we travel in the next months, years, decades, we’ll be grounded by this community who shaped us to greatness. So, congratulations CHS class of 2015. The future is ours and

tic, or other extracurricular pursuits. These skills reflect the true value of our Cheshire High education, and these skills are what we will carry with us throughout the rest of our lives. Starting today, we can truly begin to map our own routes through life’s uncertain terrain. Starting today, we can begin to strive for our greatest goals as full-fledged members of society. In “The Alchemist,” Paulo Coelho writes “When you want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” In the years to come, we can achieve the things we wish to achieve by pouring 110 percent of ourselves into whatever we decide to pursue, whether it’s becoming a doctor, starting a new company, or getting a job as a backup dancer for world-class superstar Nicki Minaj. It’s a strange thing: If you want success bad enough, eventually it just seems to gravitate towards you. But to become a doctor, you have to be willing to endure medical school. To open your company, you have to be willing to know economic theory

like the back of your hand. And to become one of Nicki Minaj’s esteemed backup performers, you have to be willing to practice popping that booty for a minimum of ten to twelve hours a day. No longer can we get away with making excuses to ourselves. Whenever we decide, “I want to get to there, to that certain point in this aspect of my life,” we make a promise to ourselves, a promise we should strive to keep. We have to want to invest the time and energy despite defeats and discouragements and disappointments. That’s what Coelho meant by “wanting” something. Wanting means doing—making productive, well thought out steps towards your goal against all odds. “But Hudson,” you might be thinking, “I don’t want to think about my future yet. I want to think about this summer and parties and trips and the beach and hanging out with my BFFs.” Well, alright, let’s shift focus back to the present. Graduation may mark our transition out of high school and into the real world, but it takes a commence-

ment ceremony for us to prepare ourselves, mentally and emotionally, to make that transition smoothly. So, let us celebrate. Let us celebrate our successful completion of high school - a significant personal and academic milestone along the paths of our life journeys. Let us acknowledge our accomplishments, and let us also acknowledge the contributions of our ever-supportive teams of family, friends, and faculty that have made those accomplishments possible. And let us remember that our Cheshire High education has indeed shaped us into the people we are today - whether we realize it or not. Now, what better way to end a speech than with the dank rhymes of Dr. Seuss? Here’s the last page of “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” So...be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray ... or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea ... You’re off to Great Places! ... Today is your day! ... Your mountain is waiting, so...get on your way! Thank you and, again, congratulations to the Cheshire High Class of 2015.
