Back To School District In Midst Of “Positive Transformation,” Florio States

“People believe that this is what’s best for kids, and they can see it.” Costs to purchase Chromebooks also continues to decrease, Florio added, allowing the devices to remain economically viable for the District. “Eventually we’ll just be buying replacements as students go through the grade levels,” he said. Technology is not the only change occurring across the District, as some personnel changes have also occurred, including in the adminstration of the high school. CHS Vice Principal Laurie Vicario retired last year, which prompted CHS Department Leader of Special Education Kristin Pelz to be hired in her place. “She was the candidate that stood out the most,” Florio said, of Pelz. “We really only ended up posting it [the job listing] internally. We had a number of good candidates inside, and she did a really great job through the interview process. It’s nice to hire from within.” The District itself is in the beginning stages of “a very positive

lthough students still have a few weeks left of vacation before once again flooding back into the halls of Cheshire schools, District staff are using the end of the summer to make sure that everything is squared away for the year to begin on Aug. 27. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio said that, as of early August, a variety of smaller projects have been in the process of being completed for the start of school. “Right now, based on getting around the District and talking to administrators, talking to (Director of Management Services) Vincent Masciana, and other staff, everything seems to be lining up,” explained Florio. While the Superintendent said there are no major academic changes being unveiled this school year, the District is expanding its Chromebook 1:1 Initiative by having each member of the incoming freshman class at Cheshire High School receive a Google Chromebook. The initiative, which was first introduced at Dodd Middle School in an effort to expand upon individualized learning and teaching methods, will now expand to CHS. Ninth grade students who receive Chromebooks will carry the device with them until graduation. To Florio, the use of Chromebooks at CHS will allow for a more personalized studentcentered learning process. The Chromebooks will also help teachers reassess and restructure the way they deliver instruction,

transformation” that Florio believes will expedite a transition to a more individualized approach to learning and teaching. For the past few years, state mandates have required the District to make changes to areas it may not have otherwise emphasized, Florio explained. Instead of reacting to state requirements, Florio projected that the upcoming years will allow the District to be proactive and focus on what it finds will be best for the students. “Now we can get back to doing what we need to in Cheshire to make the opportunities for the children the best they can possibly be,” Florio said. With the inclusion of new technology and the opportunity for teachers to transform their classrooms to meet an individualizedlearning approach, Florio feels that the school year promises to start a new era of meaningful education. “I think it’s a positive transformation,” he said. “People believe that this is what’s best for kids, and they can see it.” Also expected to influence the future of the District is the facility master plan being completed by Perkins Eastman architectural and consulting firm. Florio said. “That’s the direction that I think we as a District are moving in, so it’s important to have the tools in place,” stated Florio. The District is still awaiting word on possible grant funding, which Florio said would be used to expand the 1:1 Initiative to the elementary school levels. Unlike Dodd and CHS students, those at the elementary schools would not take their Chromebooks home.

Back To School Furlong Bringing Energy, Passion To New Role As Principal

John Rook/Cheshire Herald

Jennifer Furlong by John Rook Herald Staff

W

hen Jennifer Furlong, a teacher who has spent the vast majority of her career in the Catholic school system, made the decision that she would consider leaving the classroom and enter into administration, it came with a condition. Furlong was only going to change the course of her career for the right school and the right situation. “I didn't want to take just any principal position just for the sake of the title,” said Furlong. “It had to be as perfect a fit as possible, even if it meant waiting years for that to happen."

That sentiment was put to the test last year when Furlong interviewed for a position as principal at a Catholic school in the state, and was quickly identified as a very strong candidate. However, the veteran educator just didn't feel that the situation was right, so she graciously took her name out of the running for the job, accepting the fact that another opportunity might take years to reveal itself. Turns out, Furlong didn't have to wait long at all. In July, Furlong officially took over as the next principal at St. Bridget School, replacing Marge Whalen, who retired at the end of last year. Though classes won't begin until Aug. 27, Furlong has already been hard at work acclimating herself to a new school and a new position. “As you can tell it’s a beautiful school," said Furlong as to what drew her to St. Bridget. “One interview led to another and here I am. I still can’t believe. When I say I’m a principal or I say, ‘Come into my office,’ it still sounds a little strange. I have been a teacher for almost 20 years, so it does take a little getting used to.”

Furlong, 43, had been a middle school teacher at St. Thomas School in Southington and an educator for two decades, 18 years of which have been spent at Connecticut Catholic private schools. Previously, Furlong held a leadership position that allowed her to hold workshops for other teachers or even stand in for her principal when needed at different activities, some of which were held at St. Bridget. Though her visits to the school were brief, it allowed her the chance to become acquainted with the facility and some of the people. “Even though I didn’t know the people here (well), they were always very friendly and I knew it was a very successful school," said Furlong. Word of an opening came when Furlong’s Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent called her and informed her that they were recommending her for the position. “I thought, ‘Oh boy, here it is,’” said, Furlong, about making the decision to pursue the position. Furlong stated that accepting the job took a lot of consideration, which involved discussion with her family and waiting for

her gut to inform her. “(The interview last year) I just didn’t feel it,” explained Furlong. “As much as it was difficult to rescind my name, I did. I called them up and said it wouldn’t be a fit. There was nothing wrong with that school, I just didn't feel it was right for me.” St, Bridget, however, offered “tremendous support.” “There are so many supports in place for a brand new principal,” said Furlong, who mentioned that she is still learning her way around some of the responsibilities tied to her new position, such as handling budgets. “They are so patient with me and willing to help me when I need that help.” "Everyone here is assigned to do a job. We have someone for the budget, we have the vice principal. At many other schools, the principal was doing all of that. As

a brand new person, I didn’t want to put myself in that position,” she continued. Furlong began at St. Bridget in West Hartford, but left to take a job in the public schools after offering a reference for a friend that turned into a job offer. “She said there was an opening, so I thought, ‘Well, maybe I should check this out,’” remembered Furlong. “She hired me on the spot.” “I was there for two years and it was not a good fit for me,” she said. “I could say with confidence that it was the worst two years of my career. The public schools were just so different than the Catholic schools." Some of the differences Furlong saw included the attitude of the students, the commitment from parents, and what she called See SCHOOL, page 10

Back To School Town Once Again Offering Free And Reduced Lunch Programs

T

he Cheshire Public Schools have announced their policy for determining eligibility of children who may receive free or reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) income eligibility guidelines following family size and income criteria for determing eligibility. The following income guidelines will be used in Connecticut through June 30, 2016 for determining eligibility of participants for free or reduced price meals in the Child Nutrition Programs: To determine annual incomes: multiply by Weekly 52 Every Two Weeks 26 Twice Per Month 24 Monthly 12 Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office at each school. Only one application is required per household and an application for free or reduced-price benefits cannot be approved unless it contains complete eligibility information as indicated on the application and instructions. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determining eligibility and for administration and enforcement of the lunch and breakfast programs. Note that the District may share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules. This information may also be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. For up to 30 operating days into the new school year, eligibility from the previous year will continue within the same LEA. When the carryover period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children must pay full price for school meals and the school will not send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility. No application is required if the District directly certifies a child based on a household member receiving assistance from the

Back To School Reading Activities Planned At Chapman Chapman School Principal Marlene M. Silano

The faculty and staff at Chapman are looking forward to the opening of school on Thursday, Aug. 27. Teachers have been busy preparing for the students return by readying instructional materials, writing and revising curriculum and reorganizing their classrooms. An orientation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This orientation is for families that are new to Chapman to give them an opportunity to learn more about the school, take a tour and visit students’ classrooms.

Kindergarten families are invited to attend Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Kindergarten students and parents will meet their classroom teacher, be introduced to the staff, and learn more about procedures to ease students’ transition to school. The program will conclude with a short bus ride for students. More detailed information, including times, will be mailed to individual families. Open House this year will be held on Sept. 8 for parents of students in kindergarten through grade 3 and, on Sept. 17, for those with children in grades 4-6. Chapman students and staff were invited to participate in a

fun variation on summer reading. The theme included “Which is better, the book or the movie?” Upon their return, students and staff will have an opportunity to share what they read and vote for their favorite movie, based on a book, to watch at a Chapman Movie Night. Another fun reading experience will take place in September when the entire school will join together for pleasure reading. Students, teachers and staff will unite outdoors for an afternoon under the trees to read a good book! The Chapman team is looking forward to a fabulous new school year!.

CHS Welcoming Class Of 2019 Cheshire High School Principal Jeff Solan With great enthusiasm, we welcome the class of 2019 to Cheshire High School. The sophomore, junior, and senior classes have set the bar high and will also prove to be wonderful mentors on your path to success. The faculty, staff, and administration have been working throughout the summer to make sure that you have a wonderful experience this year. In the life of a school, summer is a time for rebirth. Cheshire High School has identified multiple goals to assist our students, staff, and families in helping us reach our mission of the enhancement of student understanding. We are continuing to focus on promoting learning opportunities that are project-based and authentic, and we recognize that authentic learning requires both tools and time. To that end, our incoming freshmen will be the first class to experience the 1:1 Initiative. Each member of the class of 2019 will receive a Chromebook, and teachers and school leaders are collaborating on the best practices to maximize effectiveness of this technology for communication, learning, and creation. Making strides in these areas will only help enrich the tremendous reputation we hold dear. Please remember that many of our upper classmen and teacher volunteers have been planning for a comprehensive orientation for all grade nine students and those new to us on Friday, Aug. 21. We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming you back to school for another outstanding year!

Back To School School To Celebrate New Year On Opening Day Of Classes continued from page 4

a “colder environment.” “Obviously, you don't have the sense of religion,” she said. "If someone sneezed (you couldn't say) God Bless you or Bless you. That was bringing religion into the school. I just felt like I had to watch what I was going to say.” Returning to her roots at the religious schools, Furlong was once again comfortable and happy to be back in the classroom with her students. And while she admits that learning the ins and outs of the principal job has taken getting used to, she’s also had to acclimate to a position that requires her to deal less directly with students and more directly with other educators.

“I have come quite a long way with even just my interactions with other adults,” said Furlong, with a laugh. “I have been used to dealing with students. It’s been quite an area of growth, the public speaking, relaying important information to the parents. It comes little by little.” Furlong mentioned that she previously set up initiatives that involved parents and students, has been giving more presentations and speeches, and becoming more involved in administrative meetings. “Even when I meet with the superintendent, sometimes I look around and think, ‘What am I doing here with all these big wigs?’” she quipped.

Having achieved a high level of success as a teacher, receiving praise for her work both from colleagues and students, Furlong admitted that she has had to be patient while getting her feet wet as a principal. Yet, when St. Bridget’s doors open on Aug. 27, she knows that she will be one of a number of new faces at the

school, and she is hoping that her first step as principal will have a lasting effect. This summer, Furlong went out and purchased New Year’s celebration items normally worn or used on New Year's Eve. When students return for class, she will hand out hats, noise makers, and other items to teachers and stu-

dents alike, all to signify that it is the beginning of a new year. “The things I’m most excited about are ... working with the students, working with the parents. That’s my strength,” she said. “I’ll be playing with the kids, playing Hop Scotch outside, which I’d rather be doing than sitting at my computer.”

Back To School Important Information Regarding Local School Bus Routes T

he bus routes for the 2015/2016 school year for Cheshire Public Schools, and for the Cheshire students attending Wilcox Technical School, Sound School, Lyman Hall High School and St. Bridget School, will be available on the Cheshire Public Schools website—www.cheshire. k12.ct.us/district-departments/ transportation— and will be updated periodically. The Board of Education Transportation Policy 3541 is also available on the Cheshire Public Schools website. In preparation for the first day of school on Aug. 27, parents and students are asked to review busing information on the yellow post cards that are being mailed to them. Please note that the busing information may fluctuate; the most up-todate information can be found on the District’s website. 1. All bus route stop times are approximate. Students should be at their appropriate bus stops approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. The bus will not stop if the student is inside the house, garage, or on the front porch. Pickup times may be adjusted during the first few weeks of school and can fluctuate from dayto-day during the school year due to issues such as traffic, weather, temporary road construction, etc. 2. Bus schedules for Cheshire Public Schools for the 2015/2016 school year are established according to the enrollment information available as of early August. The bus schedules are subject to revision due to en-

rollment changes such as transfers, address changes, or additional registrations, and processing of Available Seat Petition requests. Please refer to the Cheshire Public Schools website for the most up-to-date bus routes. 3. Walking Distance: A student’s walking distance to school and walking distance to the bus stop, as defined in Section 2 of Transportation Policy 3541 of the Cheshire Board of Education, shall not exceed the following standards: Students who are in kindergarten shall not be required to walk farther than one-half mile to school or to the bus stop; students who are in grades 1 through 6 shall not be required to walk farther than one mile to school or to the bus stop; students who are in grades 7 through 12 shall not be required to walk farther than one-and one-half miles to school or to the bus stop. Walking distance means the linear measure from a point at the curb or edge of a public road at the student’s residence to a point at the nearest school building entrance; to a point at the nearest, safe entrance to the school grounds located within one hundred feet of the school building entrance; or to the bus pickup/drop off area; or to the bus stop, if applicable. Walking Area means the area encompassed by the student’s walking route. The walking area may be paved or unpaved and is usually parallel to a public road and distinguished by curbing, drainage ditch, grass area, fencing, or other feature

independent of any white line safety markings along the road pavement. Walking area includes sidewalks. 4. All written requests for transportation to and/or from a location other than your assigned bus stop (for daycare, student’s workplace, community program, or due to unique and individual hardship) must be made on a yearly basis using the form Available Seat Petition which is available on the Cheshire Public Schools website. Please complete the form and return it to the Transportation Office. Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, forms received after Aug. 8 may not be processed until mid-September. Send the completed forms to: Transportation Department, 157 Sandbank Rd., Cheshire, CT 06410, or fax to (203) 272-6880; or email lmiller@ cheshirect.org. 5. All written requests to establish or alter an existing bus route and/or stop must be made on a yearly basis using the form Accommodation Petition, which is available on the District’s website. Send the completed form to: Transportation Department, 157 Sandbank Rd., Cheshire, CT 06410; or fax to (203) 272-6880; or email lmiller@cheshirect.org. The Cheshire Public School System appreciates your patience while we address the large number of requests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of Education Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer

than 50 minutes after the first two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 6. In addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of Education: Parents/guardians are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from and at the bus stop and to and from the school assigned. Please note that a parent, guardian, or responsible older sibling must be at the assigned bus stop of a kindergarten student or student with special needs when the bus picks up or delivers the student to and from school. Students in grades one through 12 will be dropped off at their bus stop regardless of whether or not a parent or designated individ-

ual is waiting for them. 7. When Cheshire Schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the Wilcox Tech and Sound School buses will not transport students to Wilcox Technical School or the Sound School, even if either school opens that day. Regarding all schools, in the event a delay or cancellation is not called, parents are encouraged to keep children home if they deem local neighborhood conditions unsafe for travel to schools. 8.
