Kicking off the Fall Festival at Bartlem Park will be live music and a variety of area food trucks, offering pizza, cannolis, and sandwiches, among other delightful snacks. “We thought it might be a great opportunity to make this more than just a Saturday event,” Chamber President Sheldon Dill said. The recent successes with food truck festivals prompted the Chamber to take advantage of the mobile meals, he said, making the Fall Festival a weekend event that is more ap-
pealing to all members of the community. “We were looking at what other towns do for similar-type fall festival events,” explained Dill. Food trucks will be lining Bartlem Park starting at 5 p.m. Friday, and will continue with live music until 9 p.m. After a night’s rest, the true Fall Festival will commence at 10 a.m. Saturday with the annual craft fair, with a kickoff provided by the Cheshire High School Ram Band at 11 a.m. “We go right into the music on the main stage (and) the acSee TWO, page 5

Fall Festival History After 11 years of conducting the successful “flea market” event, the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce chose to move in a different direction.
Scenes From Fall Festival 2014
The first annual Chamber Marketplace was established on Sept. 16, 1989. The event was held behind Town Hall, with 36 vendor booths and four food booths. Food booth vendors were The Seafarer Restaurant, Callahan’s Bar & Grill, Cuisine-Cuisine, and Domino’s Pizza. Other vendors included The Notch Store, Old Foundry Gift Shop, The Window Box, and George’s Pharmacy. The following year, the name was changed to Chamber Marketplace – A Medley of Shops & Eateries and entertainment was introduced. The event steadily expanded until it was necessary to move to a larger venue—Bartlem Park—on September 19, 1996. Fireworks were also added.

Other organizations participated, such as a Children’s Fair sponsored by the Newcomer’s Club, and The Kiwanis Carnival. The event has grown to include entertainment on two stages, Taste of Cheshire food booths, a car show, an arts & crafts show and, in 2014, 86 vendors participated.

While the Fall Festival promises to offer the familiar events with which people have come to enjoy, such as a hot dog eating contest at 4:30 p.m. provided by Blackie’s Hot Dog Stand and live music throughout the day, there are a new commodities that Dill said will be offered. One such program is the dedication ceremony renaming a section of Route 10 as the Medal of Honor Memorial Highway, which is set to begin at 3 p.m. State and federal officials will be present to recognize Col. Harvey C. Barnum Jr., a former Cheshire resident who received the Medal of Honor—the most prestigious mili-

tary recognition possible. Barnum, who served in the Vietnam War, was one of two Cheshire residents honored with the medal, alongside Sgt. Eri Woodbury, who fought in the Civil War. Leading the dedication ceremony will be VFW Post 10052 Commander John White. “I think it’s a great addition to the event but, more important, it’s great for the town and the people to recognize two outstanding citizens,” Dill said. In 2014, the Fall Festival offered nearly 120 vendors, crafters, and restaurants. Dill commented that he anticipates this year will likely boast a similar number of organizations, if not more. Vendors such as Cheshire Lights of Hope and both the Cheshire Republican and Democratic town committees will return once again alongside Whippersnappers, members of the SARAH Foundation, and the Hope Pregnancy Center, among others. The Cheshire Energy Commission will be sponsoring an LED lightbulb giveaway to visitors, free of charge. For those who may not be able to attend Friday night, do not fret, as there will be food vendors offering a variety of snacks on Saturday, too. Chamber officials will be serving up some burgers, fries, and both alcoholic beverages and sodas, while Pop’s Pizza, Senor Pancho’s, and Sweet Pea’s To Go will be offering signature dishes. Calvary Life Family Worship Center will be able to appeal to the sweet teeth of the world with their offering of apple fritters. Chamber staff will also be serving ice cream. Also continuing this year is the local farmers market, Dill said, which has grown each year the program continues. “We get the local farmers that donate produce, and it’s really wonderful for those that attend the event because it’s a chance not only to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, but it’s from the growers right here in Cheshire,” stated Dill. From Dance To Martial Arts, Lots To See On The Second Stage continued from page 5 to the Bar, and Grey Negative will play some tunes throughout both Friday and Saturday, but Dill recognized that the second stage has been receiving a bit of attention in recent years. “We have a second stage where we do other things, and that’s been very, very successful and seems to have a wide appeal, (especially) to the younger people,” Dill said. This year, Horgan Academy of Dance and Bergamo’s Martial Arts will be just two of the

To offset the cost of fireworks, the Chamber is again asking for an optional monetary donation of $1. Last year marked the first year that Chamber staff were asking for donations but, to Dill’s surprise, many residents were shocked that the request was only $1. “People were giving more than a dollar,” Dill recalled. “We’re just asking to defray the costs of the fireworks.” To Dill, the Festival offers a myriad of enjoyable options for everyone, young and old. “It’s a big event,” he said. “It’s a big event for the Chamber, but it’s a big event for the community and, if the weather is good, it’s a terrific event … It can be an extremely exciting event, and it seems to have something for everybody.” For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www. cheshirefestival.com.

Call Veteran-Owned PAL’S For Power Washing
P
ALS’S Power Washing, LLC is a veteran-owned business that specializes in “Hot Water” Washing for both residential and commercial properties. Owner-Operator Kevin Palladino is certified with the United Association of Contract Cleaners (UAMCC). PAL’S specializes in exterior house washing. We can wash vinyl, aluminum, clapboard, stucco, cedar, log cabins, etc. Interior and exterior Gutter Cleaning consist of removing debris from gutters and ensuring that downspouts work properly. The exterior gutter is hand-brushed to remove dirt and stains. When finished, the gutters will be white and bright! Kevin is also the Environmental Representative for the State of Connecticut through the UAMCC and his company cleans only with Green products that are safe for plants, grass, shrubs, and animal life.
Earlier this year, we were certified in Complete Deck Restoration and Roof Cleaning. What sets us apart from other companies is our Deck Restoration. PAL’S can repair rotted wood, prepare decks for sealing, and seal decks. Most companies would have to subcontract a carpenter, washer, and paint crew. PAL’S does it all! Too many people spend countless hours and money building beautiful wood decks, only to watch them deteriorate because the wood is unprotected from weather. Rain, melting snow, and morning dew are quickly absorbed by unprotected wood, causing it to soften and swell. The sun’s heat causes drying which makes the wood shrink. These cycles of wet and dry, swelling and shrinking, cause the wood to warp, split, and crack. PAL’S has extensive knowledge of pressure-treated, mahogany, cedar, douglas fir, and
ipe wood. We also clean composite decks and railings. We also offer Soft Wash Roof Cleaning. GAF, the makers of shingles discourages power washing a roof, so customers are instructed to use “soft washing.” PAL’S is a certified roof cleaner. Whether you have black streaks, moss, or lichen, it can be safely removed with time and weather. Never allow a person on your roof to clean with high pressure water. Commercial Cleaning may consists of washing a building, removing gum from a sidewalk, cleaning the concrete pads from a fueling station, fleet washing and dumpster pad cleaning. For all concrete cleaning jobs, PAL’S uses a state-of-the-art surface cleaner that will surely make concrete look new again. During the fall and winter months, PAL’S offers Dryer Vent Cleaning and is licensed
by the Nation Fire Prevention Association. During the winter months, PALS does driveway and sidewalk snow removal. If you have a snow or ice dam emergency, the last thing you want is someone up on your roof with a sledge hammer. PAL’S Snow and Ice Dam Removal uses hot steam that does no damage to the shingles and
gutters. For more information on our ice dam preventive maintenance program, please reach out to us for a free roof estimate. For more information, call PAL’S Power Washing, LLC at (860) 919-8748 or visit www.palspowerwashing.com. Check out our ad on page 10 for special offers and coupons.

Boulder Knoll Montessori Marks 33 Years
oulder Knoll Montessori opened on Sept. 1, marking its 33rd year of serving preschool and kindergarten children in Cheshire. Established in 1983 by Mary Ann Ricker on the PT Gaylord Homestead, Boulder Knoll’s program is based on the philosophy of Maria Montessori. Montessori compared a child’s mind to a sponge, as it absorbs information from interacting with the environment. The Montessori classroom provides children with freedom to explore in a manner that allows them to develop their senses, language, creativity and independence. At Boulder Knoll, Montessori’s philosophy forms the basis of a program focused on the whole child. Academic foundations are balanced with social-emotional skill building, including self-advocacy, compassion and respect for others. A natural play area provides a setting for exploring the natural world. Boulder Knoll’s Director, Jill Casertano, encourages interested families to visit during the upcoming Open House on Sunday, Oct. 4. Boulder Knoll Montessori School is located at 660 Boulder Rd., (203) 272-5893. See our ad on page 12.

Constitution Mortgage Moves Office, Becomes Province Mortgage Associates
financial pillar of the Cheshire community, Constitution Mortgage, has now become Province Mortgage Associates. Constitution Mortgage, which most recently acted as the Mortgage Department for BCI Financial, is known for having some of the most seasoned mortgage experts in the area. Their office will be moving from 219 South Main St. to the brand-new location at 202 Highland Ave., across the street from Maplecroft Plaza/SuperStop & Shop in Cheshire. The benefits of this merg-
er to the homeowners of this community are many. A deeper product selection means more options for people to buy homes as well as more ways for current homeowners to save money through refinancing. A more effective marketing campaign will keep mortgage clientele well informed when it comes to changes in the marketplace. As a delegated lender, Province has more control over the underwriting and closing process, which facilitates a better mortgage experience for the client as well as for realtors and other people

The only thing edible is the ice cream sundae that follows the fabulous spa services. Imagine an afternoon at the salon with mom and daughter. What would your treat be? • A Hair Wrap with three colors, beads and a scented hair topping in Strawberry Vanilla. • A Mini Dessert Mani with a Sundae Scoop Soak, a Whipped Sugar Scrub, and a Flavored Banana Cream Lotion Massage followed by polish and design. • An Ultimate Dessert Cut Combo that includes creating your own hair toppings, a shampoo with your choice of luscious Sundae shampoos, cut, and blow dry. You simply have to see it to believe it! And don’t leave the boys out, because they will just love experimenting with our Make Your Own product menu, making their own soaps, lip balms, scented slime, and more. How about Cotton Candy Popsicle Soap or Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shampoo? Bath time was never so much fun! Two Days Of Family Fun At Kiwanis Carnival
T
he Kiwanis Club of Cheshire will hold its annual carnival on Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, at Bartlem Recreation Area on Route 10, across from Cheshire High School. Hours are from 6 p.m. to closing on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to closing on Saturday. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 13. The carnival rides are provided by Marenna Amusements, LLC. The carnival has a variety of family rides for young and old, and is one of the club’s major fundraising events each year. The money raised by the Kiwanis Club goes back into the community to support many youth-oriented activities, such as youth sports teams, leadership training programs, reading programs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, an annual bike safety program, and $3,000 in scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing higher education. This community service organization also supports many senior citizen activities. Kiwanis International is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2015. The now-worldwide community service organization was formed in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan and today has clubs with volunteer members across the globe who are dedicated to carrying out the organization’s primary goal of
“serving the children of the world.” The local Kiwanis Club of Cheshire invites you to join and take part in the fun and rewarding experience of volunteer service to your Cheshire community. Giving back, paying forward, serving our fellow citizens—however it is expressed—is a most notable aspect of everyone’s journey through life. On Saturday, the carnival will be held in conjunction with the annual Cheshire Festival & Marketplace, sponsored by the Town of Cheshire
