Florio Excited For The Start Of Another Year

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio by Josh Morgan Herald Staff It's tough for Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Florio to decide on which part of the school year is his favorite. Is it in June, when seniors are proceeding over to the football ﬁeld for graduation, or is it in August, when youngsters at Darcey

School are experiencing their ﬁrst day of classes? It's a toss up, he says. "You just can't beat (those days)," Florio stated. "I am always excited for the new school year as summer winds down." Students are back to school in just 11 days, on Aug. 29. Teachers return the week before, as everyone is getting back into the

groove for another school year. Florio is entering his eighth as Superintendent, and twenty-ﬁrst overall in Cheshire. He said it's strange in a way that the students he met at Darcey so many years ago are now out of college and adults living in the real world. Some of them have even been hired in Cheshire, such as a guidance counselor at the high school that Florio recalled watching play football a number of years ago. "It's kind of surreal," he said. Florio stated that, over the last year, there were the "usual issues" with the school budget. He described it as "very challenging" economically, but the schools managed to get through. A big part of that can be credited to the teachers and their union, Florio said, who "came to the table" in a difﬁcult economic climate and helped the district. Going into the 2011/2012 school year, Florio expected things will be "close to where they were" this past school year, but noted, "it's still not where we should be." "But, given our resources, we'll start next year in good shape," he said. As part of the teachers union agreement to rework its contract, a retirement incentive was offered. According to Florio, a total of 30 staff took the incentive, with 20 retiring this year, and an-

other 10 planned after the upcoming school year. There were no changes in administrative positions. Through leaves of absence and the retirements, Florio said there will be more than 20 new staff in Cheshire this year, meaning he will hold a new teacher orientation in the coming week for the ﬁrst time in three years. "I have to dust off my speech," he joked. In the classroom, Florio acknowledged that recent graduates were “impressive" students, many of whom went to "top notch" competitive colleges and Ivy League schools around the country. The test scores, while "still very good," could improve, Florio stated, and mentioned eighth grade reading in particular. He is quick to note, however, that there is only so much a district can do with limited ﬁnances, and he would like to add more individual support for students, if the budget allows, down the road. "I think that would help address some of the issues," Florio explained. Technology is also moving forward and "going to the next level," Florio said, although it will take some time for Cheshire to get there. Last year, CHS relaxed some of its policies on cell

phone use in the school. Students could use their phones at lunch or in study hall, but not in the classroom. "If it came out during class, it was taken away. If it came out during a test, a zero was given," Florio explained. "These are things that years ago students would be suspended for. I think in the next ﬁve to 10 years what we do in the classroom is going to look different." Florio remarked that making Cheshire High School completely Wi-Fi accessible is in the works. A future of students using tablets and smart phones in the classroom instead of a textbook is also a possibility. It's all uncharted territory but certainly a possibility as technology becomes cheaper and more available. Outside of the classroom, the usual problems still remain. "Our buildings are old, but we do our best to maintain them," Florio said. "We have to invest. We have to spend the money." Problems with air quality at CHS popped up over last school year and utility tunnels running under the school proved to be the cause. Try These Tips To Alleviate First-Day Stress The first day of school can create butterflies in the stomachs of parents and children. However, following a few tips can alleviate feelings of nervousness. August and September are prime months for the return to school. Whether this is a child's first time entering the classroom or he or she has done the backto-school thing multiple times, it's not uncommon for feelings of anxiety to arise. There are expectations and unknowns with each and every school year for both the students and their parents. Pivotal years, such as kindergarten, 6th grade for middle-schoolers, freshman year of high school, or the start of college can create added levels of jitters because these years mark entry to a new school or new routine. But keeping a few pointers in mind can alleviate some of the fears. *Keep a routine. It is important for parents and students to get back into the school swing of things a few weeks prior to the first day of school. Start set-

This can also calm any apprehension parents may have, because they, too, will know the layout of the school, its policies, and who will be watching over their children. *Don't be nervous. Children often look to their parents for guidelines on how to behave. A parent who is overly nervous or sad about the ﬁrst day of school could make their kids nervous, too. Put on a brave face and keep any anxiety hidden until kids have left for school. *Be prepared. Gather supplies, practice the driving route, lay out clothes, make lunch the night before, get a good night's rest, and set the alarm clock. Knowing all of the controllable factors are handled can ease the mind of parents and students.

Choose The Right Extracurricular Activities Today's kids are busier than ever before. Be it the increasingly competitive nature of scholastic life or the increase of two-income households where kids need something to do other than come directly home after school, children today are much busier than their school-aged counterparts of yesteryear. While it can be fun and beneficial for kids to participate in extracurricular activities, finding the right fit isn't as easy as it sounds. When helping kids find an extracurricular activity, it's best to consider a host of factors. Especially keep in mind that not all kids are the same with respect to interests. And what was enjoyed by their parents won't necessarily be enjoyed by them. Getting Started The best place to start is to speak to kids about their interests. Just because Dad loved playing football doesn't mean Junior is destined to be a gridiron great. Kids have their own interests, and those interests can be cultivated with the right extracurricular activity. For example, a creative child might enjoy an after-school art class a couple of times per week. Parents should also consider extracurriculars that can help kids grow as people. For instance, a child who's shy in public but loves hamming it up at home might embrace an after-school theater program.

Once options have been discussed with kids, take in a session or two before committing to anything. The shy youngster might visit the local theater program and enjoy it thoroughly, or he or she might decide against it. Either way, a visit will give kids and parents a sense of what the program is like and whether or not it's the right fit. When visiting, observe the nature of the program. Is it an encouraging, vibrant environment? Do the adults and kids involved appear to be having fun? Get the 411 Parents want their kids to be as safe after school as they are during it. When looking for an extracurricular activity, inquire about the staff-to-child ratio and about the staff's professional background. Any staff-to-child ratio that is greater than 12:1 likely indicates a program that is understaffed, which could mean kids won't get the attention they need. Also, ask for the staff's references and work history in the field of child care. If certification is necessary or recommended, make sure the staff meets all requirements. Parents should also inquire about program costs. Though many programs are upfront about fees, some have hidden fees that can add up. Such fees can be for uniforms, equipment, class trips, etc. Extra fees don't have to exclude a program from consideration, but it's better to know about

them in advance than have them come as a surprise. Consider the Grade Level A child's age and grade level should also be considered when choosing an extracurricular activity. Consult teachers about ﬁnding an age-appropriate extracurricular activity. For example, less competitive activities that emphasize fun might be more appropriate for kids in kindergarten and the ﬁrst grade. For second

graders, activities not offered at school, like learning to play an instrument, can help cultivate a child's interest in a noncompetitive environment. As kids reach third grade and beyond, consider more rules-based activities, including team sports, as kids at that age are more capable of understanding rules and handling losing than younger kids. As chil-

dren get older and move on to middle school, look for activities that reinforce learning and help develop a young person's character, including their ability to interact with others. When looking for an extracurricular activity for kids, parents should consider a host of factors, including the child's interests and age.

Going Digital, Pros And Cons The world has quickly become digital, and the younger generations are leading the pack with technology that just may make some other items obsolete. As pre-teens and teenagers routinely turn to digital devices for entertainment and schoolwork, the face of education may change as well. In the past students toted notebooks (the paper kind), pencils, pens, and folders to school. Today, students carry digital devices like computer tablets, notebooks (the electronic kind), smart phones, and other digital devices to the classroom. Furthermore, texting and instant messaging have replaced traditional modes of casual conversation. Another item that may go the way of the dinosaur is the printed book. Students can now carry an entire library worth of reading material on a slim e-reader device or on the many other evolving tablet-type machines. There may be a day when one no longer browses the aisles of the school library for a book, but only downloads the text instantly when needed. Some textbooks are already offered in digital format, and some school systems and teachers may opt for the convenience of digital devices.

Little data exists as to just how many schools have policies allowing the use of cell phones and other digital devices in class. In the United States, a 2009 U.S. Department of Education survey indicates only 4 percent of publicschool teachers say a handheld device is available in the classroom every day. But things can change in a short period of time. Digital Advantages There are many advantages to going digital. Typing tends to go faster for adept keyboard users, which many youngsters have become since they've essentially grown up with computers in the household. This makes note-taking easier. When notes and assignments are saved to a computer, there's less likelihood of them getting lost, especially if important ﬁles are routinely backed up. Data saved on a computer can easily be manipulated into a number of different formats, potentially making it easier to study. Bodies of text can be transformed into charts or pie graphs with many word processing programs. Students can cut and paste important quotes or examples into essays and the like, saving time on homework. In terms of streamlining backpacks, digital readers and other

devices eliminate heavy books and notebooks. This can be seen as a big plus to students who have grown accustomed to carrying around 20+ pounds on their backs from a very young age. As many teachers turn to online resources, such as e-mailing and posting assignments on a personal website, students almost have to keep up with the times with some sort of tool that has Internet access. Digital Disadvantages On the other side of the equation, going digital does have some disadvantages. The decline of penmanship is one of them. In a digital era, people are less likely to write letters by hand or keep up with penmanship in other ways. Some children don't know what cursive handwriting is and may never learn how to sign their names in "script," which was a common lesson for other generations. While digital communication does promote social interactions on some levels, there are some who argue that spending too much time staring at a screen and keyboard compromises the social aspect of going to school and learning in a classroom. Today's youth are less likely to "talk," choosing to "LOL."

That cycle began soon after the last student in the Class of 2011 received their diploma and the rain started to fall. Numerous building projects commenced including a roof replacement on the south side of the building,

painting of nearly all of the first floor classrooms, carpet and tile removal and replacement in hallways and classrooms around the school, bathroom renovations, and, most recently, the groundbreaking for a new synthetic turf field and replacement track. Free And Reduced Meal Parameters Spelled Out The Cheshire Public Schools have announced its policy for determining eligibility of children who may receive free or reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Breakfast is only served at Dodd Middle School and Cheshire High School. Local school ofﬁcials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) income eligibility guidelines following family size and income criteria for determing eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the determining official, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. If he/she wishes to make a formal appeal, a request, either orally or in writing, may be made to Dr. Greg Florio, Superintendent of Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT, 06410 for a hearing to appeal the decision. Parties may also call the Central Office at (203) 250-2400. The policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. Each school and the Central Office of the school district has a copy of the policy which may be reviewed by an interested party. If a household member becomes unemployed or if a household size changes at any time, the family should contact the school to file a new application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for reduced or free meals, if the family income falls at or below the levels shown in the above graph.

Shopping for school items can be a big expense, one that's especially tough to handle after paying for a summer vacation or ﬁnancing kids' stays at camp. *Time: Crowded stores can make shopping stressful, especially when kids (and adults) would rather be spending time elsewhere. *Intimidation: Facing a store full of stocked racks and shelves can make even the most avid shopper feel a little anxious. Parents face decisions about choosing clothing that is both acceptable to the school and trendy enough for their kids. This can put added pressure on shoppers. *Cranky kids: While some children may relish the idea of picking out a new wardrobe, others may become disgruntled by heading to the store having to try

Every year parents spend signiﬁcant amounts of money on school expenses. While there's not much parents can do about tuition, there are ways to save on additional expenses, including clothing. Restocking a student's wardrobe can be costly, but savvy Moms and Dads can lessen the blow in a variety of ways. Although students may not yet be ready to head back to class, both parents and children may not be looking forward to school shopping for a number of reasons. *Expenses: Statistics posted on Chiff.com indicate that $7.2 billion were spent on school clothing in 2009 for American students. In Canada, statistics show that nearly $450 million were spent on boys’ and girls’ clothing and accessories in 2008.

Though some professional educators debate the use of standardized tests, students of all ages can expect such tests to continue to play a role in their education. Younger students might take standardized tests to help determine the class level that best suits their abilities, while high school students will need to take certain standardized tests in order to gain admission to a college or university. Since standardized tests are likely going nowhere anytime soon, students can take several steps to improve their scores. While a professional tutoring service might be a worthwhile investment for students concerned with their college admissions, other steps can work for students regardless of which standardized test they're preparing to take. *Maintain healthy sleep patterns. Healthy sleep restores and renews the body, both mentally and physically. When a person suffers from sleep deprivation, the negative side effects are numerous. These include memory

and cognitive impairment, making it difﬁcult for people think and process information. That said, a student preparing to take a standardized test who is struggling to sleep at night is much less likely to succeed on the test than a student who is getting adequate sleep. Parents and students should examine sleeping patterns months in advance of the test, and work to address any problems as soon as possible. The sooner the issue is resolved, the sooner a student's memory is likely to improve, which can help his or her test scores as well. *Practice. Practice tests can be a very valuable tool when attempting to improve standardized test scores. Sample tests are available on a handful of websites, and tutors hired to help kids improve scores often bring practice tests with them. Such practice tests are often very similar to the actual tests and will help kids be more comfortable with the tests when it comes time to take the real ones. When taking practice tests,

time them just as you would the actual tests. This, too, can improve a student's comfort level and will decrease the likelihood that a student will feel like he or she is racing against the clock when the time comes to take the real test. *Learn the test. Learning the test involves ﬁguring how a score is determined. Some standardized tests place greater emphasis on certain questions and tabulate scores based on this weighting system. Learn that weighting system, if it exists, and in the months leading up to the test help students concentrate on those sections that weigh more heavily than others. Another thing to learn is if the test weighs wrong answers more than skipped questions. On such tests, a student might actually be better off leaving a question blank than guessing and risking a wrong answer. Many tutors specialize in a particular test and might be able to help students learn about the test they're taking and, in so doing, improve their scores.

Take Advantage Of Several Volunteer Opportuniies When attempting to gain acceptance to the college of their choice, teenagers quickly learn the admission requirements extend beyond their report cards. Colleges weigh academics considerably, but many institutions of higher learning also want wellrounded students who will make great additions to the community as well as the classroom. One of the things admissions boards look for in an applicant is his or her track record of volunteering. Though students likely won't be denied admission if they have never volunteered, it never hurts to have volunteer work on a resume, and some students have even earned scholarship money thanks to their record of service. Parents who want to help their child ﬁnd the right volunteer op-

portunity should consider the child's hobbies and interests. Oftentimes, a child's favorite hobby matches up perfectly with a volunteer opportunity. When such a match is made, teenagers tend to look forward to their volunteer work and might even ﬁnd a career path they'd like to follow. Important Information Regarding Bus Routes The 2011-2012 school bus routes for Cheshire Public Schools and for the Cheshire students attending Wilcox Technical School, Sound School, and St. Bridget’s School, and “Bus Route Instructions” are available on the Cheshire Public School’s – Transportation Office - Policy and Forms web page at www. cheshire.k12.ct.us/transportation. Parents and students are asked to review the information on the post cards, which were mailed earlier in August, in preparation for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 29. 1. All times listed on the bus information postcards are tentative. Students should be at the appropriate stops approximately ten (10) minutes before the time listed since times may be adjusted during the first few weeks of school. 2. The Cheshire Public School bus schedules for the 2011-2012 school year have been established according to the enrollment information available as of August 2011. The bus schedules are subject to revision due to enrollment changes such as transfers, address changes, or additional registrations. 3. Per Transportation Policy of the Cheshire Board of Education, students are to walk up to onehalf mile for kindergarten, up to one mile for grades one through six, up to one and one-half miles

for grades seven through twelve. “Walking distance” means the linear measure from a point at the curb or edge of a public road at the student’s residence to a point at the nearest school building entrance; to a point at the nearest, safe entrance to the school grounds located within 100 feet of the school building entrance; or to the bus pickup/drop off area; or to the bus stop, if applicable. 4. All written requests for changes in the school bus routes and / or stops must be made using Cheshire’s “Petition Requesting School Transportation Accommodations” form. The form is available on the Cheshire Public Schools – Transportation Ofﬁce Policy and Forms Web page. Send the completed forms to: Supervisor of Fiscal / Transportation Services, Cheshire Public Schools, 29 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410. Please be sure the petitions include the student’s name, grade, address, bus number, school, and state clearly the problem that you wish corrected. The Cheshire Public School System appreciates your patience while we address the large number of requests for changes that are received at the beginning of the school year. Board of Edu-

cation Policy 3541 states, “Bus routes shall be established to provide the safest and shortest routes as economically as possible.” Based on this combination, transportation requests are addressed with highest priority being the safety of students, followed by routing changes caused by road construction, assigning bus stops for new students, reducing the routes that take longer than 50 minutes after the ﬁrst two weeks of school, and inputting these changes into the computer system. 5. Due to the issues that must be addressed at the start of the school year, “Petitions Requesting The Use Of Available Seats On School Buses” forms received after August 17, 2011 will not be processed until September 12, 2011. 6. In addition, parents are asked to pay close attention to the following policy of the Board of Education. “Parents are responsible for the actions and safety of their children walking to and from bus stops and to and from school.” Please note that, when kindergarten students require bus transportation, parents should take them to the bus stop and wait with them and, later in the day, parents

should wait at the bus stop to receive the students. 7. Wilcox Technical School and Sound School Students residing in a busing district for Cheshire High School will take the regular Cheshire High School bus scheduled for their area in the morning. At Cheshire High School, they will transfer to the Wilcox Bus or the Sound School Bus. Students residing within walking guidelines for Cheshire High School will walk to the high school in the morning. From the high school, they will take the Wilcox Bus to Wilcox or the Sound School Bus to the Sound School. Wilcox Tech and Sound School students will be bused from Wilcox and the Sound School in the afternoon, according to an assigned after-

noon bus stop. 8. When Cheshire Schools are closed for the day due to inclement weather, the Wilcox Tech and Sound School buses will not take students to Wilcox Technical School or the Sound School, even if either school opens that day. Regarding all schools, in the event a delay or cancellation is not called, parents are encouraged to keep children home if they deem local neighborhood conditions unsafe for travel to schools. 9.
