Four years, seven hundred twenty days later; here we are. Twelve years, two thousand one hundred and sixty days; here we are. Our entire life so far, all the days we’ve been on this earth; here we are. To some of us, the end of high school signals the end of Cheshire. To some of us it signals the end of childhood. Still, to others, it signals the end of a chapter in the great book of life we hold so dearly in our hearts. Yesterday, we were one day younger. Tomorrow, we will be one day older; but today…Time has no relevance. There are moments in our lives when, for a instance, time stands still; when the clock stops ticking
and all you can hear and feel is the moment you are living in. For years this stage has been occupied by people who have passed through the same gate we are about to open; the same bridge we are about to cross; the same sea we have travelled over. If you ask any of them, they will all tell you about this moment; one of those moments where time stood still. Today is a day we will remember for the rest of our lives. It is a day we will tell our children about; a day our loved ones will hear of; a day our minds will drift to in the silence of sleep and a day we will see again and again in our lives ahead. We have made it. We sit here

today because of a drive inside of each and every one of us. It is there, and I really do believe that. Dressed simply in a bright red gown, you are here. We are here, together. It has been a long and winding road to get here, for each and every one of us. We’ve all made sacrifices and fought the tough battles, but we are still here. Yesterday, we saw a path ahead. Today we take our first step. Tomorrow, we take another and, after that, yet another. For each of us the road may seem dark and foreboding. There are traps and snakes hidden in the grasses we walk along. But the path can be lit, and will be lit, by us — the people of tomorrow. Here we have been given the tools, the necessary lessons, both in and out of the classroom, to bring the future to our doorstep. We are ready.

18 years. For all the joy, love, and compassion you have shown me and our fellow classmates, the thanks cannot be enough. For the time we’ve spent together, we have built a world only we know and only we will understand. If in the days and years ahead fate should bring us back together, we will relive the world in which we created. Our world will spread and fill the land with all the gifts we have been given here. Today is not the end of the world we have created; merely the beginning.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
Today, we step onto a road lit by the fire burning inside each of us. Today, we step onto a road with the power of memory to guide each of our steps. They are memories only we have; only we can use. There is a world waiting and beckoning for us to come. We are ready. In my time here and my time tomorrow, you, and all of you, will live inside of my heart. Your voices, your faces, the time spent with you, will forever teach me new lessons and rekindle ones taught long ago. It has been a true pleasure these

Brendan Pier: Parents, Teachers, Administrators, Board of Education, and most of all, Class of 2011, thank you for being here to celebrate this important landmark in our lives. Although I feel tremendously honored and proud to have the opportunity to address such an accomplished group of peers, I feel as though I’m missing an important qualification needed to give this speech. Let me first read off a list of the many distinguished salutatorians who have had the similar pleasure of offering their thoughts and sentiments to their graduating classes: Emily Bauer, Class of 2010, Suzie Jing, Class of 2009, Catherine Cheng, Class of 2008, Sophia Li, Class
of 2007. I could go on, but one is a coincidence, two is a trend, but four, well, I think you get the picture. Valedictorian Audrey Zhang: They’re all girls. Pier: Thank you for that insight Audrey. So, to account for the fact that I’m missing this attribute, we thought it would be best that I lessen the shock by sharing the stage with the Valedictorian from the Class of 2011, Audrey Zhang. Zhang: And even then, we felt the need to give him his own podium. Pier: But all joking aside, we are extremely excited to speak here today. The one thing that we aren’t too excited about is the fact that this speech could have taken place a week and a half earlier if it were not for the mountains of snow that buried Cheshire during those cold winter months. Zhang: Now it’s warm and sunny [hopefully it actually will be so you can possibly use this line!], and we are all looking with anticipation,

excitement, and probably some nerves at the road that lies ahead. Pier: But before we move on, let’s take this time to look back on some of the things that we’ve shared and the lessons that we have learned over the course of this unforgettable senior year. We started off making a little bit of the school our own on the Senior Walk... Zhang: … but also learned from our assistant principals that the trees and brick walls apparently aren’t to be messed with. Some of us finally learned to drive... Pier: … and the rest of us learned that just because someone has a license doesn’t mean they really can. Zhang: We also learned that PowerSchool is good for some things. For instance, we discovered through PowerSchool that although there may not be a third floor swimming pool or basement hockey rink in our school... Pier: ...there are apparently secret underground passageways that are filled with mysterious substances. Although there definitely have been some mishaps and bumps along the road, they haven’t defined our class. Zhang: This year, we also celebrated the creative talents of our class. In the winter, we laughed together at One Acts, since we were fortunate enough not to have gotten our show canceled by stray snow days and water main breaks. Pier: In the spring, we recognized our veterans during our spring musical, South Pacific, and watched in awe at the production the cast put together. Zhang: But this is made especially impressive by the fact that continued to page 15

Megan Aitro
Good evening Dr. Florio, Prin-
cipal Ryan, administrative staff, CHS staff, teachers, Board of Education members, parents, family, and my fellow graduates of the Class of 2011. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate my classmates and simply say “well done.” As I reflect on the past four years, I think about the many moments, days, weeks, and years we have spent together, I can only say “thank you.” I feel so lucky and fortunate to have been part of this class because we have all grown up together. I would like to share with you a special quotation that has always had an impact on me and is something I will continue to hold close to my heart as we venture out into the world. It is a quote that defines the beginnings of our adulthood here at CHS and probably helped us all during hard times, good times, and trying times. These are words with great meaning that can help us to make our future choices. This is a quote from Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” During our time together, we have begun to make changes in the world with such important causes and experiences as: B1 day, Relay For Life, peer
Let's all strive to be all that we can be, whatever path we choose, whether it be college, the work force, a career path, the military, or a combination of all. I urge you to be who you are and strive to always be. CHANGE: How are we going to continue to make positive changes in the world we live in, for our future, and the future of our children? We must always look to how we can make changes that will impact the people around us. It might be as simple as supporting friends when they are down, to something as important as finding a cure for cancer or voicing an opinion for a cause that is very worthy, or volunteering in the community, or passing on to our children the life lessons we have learned. Whatever it is
we decide to do, we must always strive to make meaningful change in everyone's lives. WISH: Always wish big, not only for yourself but for those less fortunate than you. Wish for changes in the causes that are important, and don't sweat the smaller things in life. Be grateful for your life and the foundation that you had here at Cheshire High School and bring forth all these good wishes into the world. Wish and then act upon those wishes. SEE: Open your eyes to the beauty of this world, to opportunities, to all this world has to offer and take advantage of everything that comes your way. Be appreciative for all the opportunities you have had, including your great experience at Cheshire High
School. WORLD: Remember, this is your world, our world: we have a responsibility to live our lives in the best way we know how, to give back what has been given to us and to make a difference. We owe that to our parents, to our family, to our teachers, to our mentors, to our future, and just as importantly to ourselves. We would not have made it here tonight without the support, love, and encouragement of these important and influential people in our lives who lead us on our path and for what we should be very grateful. We come into this world as a person who is shaped by the environment and people around us, and we got out into this world as one of those people. It is our continued to page 15

tutoring, Light of Hope, CHS blood drive, peer advocates, tribute night to the veterans and South Pacific, and National Honor Society activities. Additionally, groups such as Link Crew, SADD, Unified Sports, CHS Ram Band, From the Community Service Club, Best Buddies, Rampage, Ram TV, and our sports teams have also made a huge impact here Staff at CHS. I'm sure each of you can think of others. The list The goes on. In order to understand Gandhi's quotation, it's important to think about the meaning of each word that gives it a sense of whole: BE is the first word we need to think about. THE CHESHIRE HERALD, JULY 7, 2011
Speeches Continued continued from page 4 during our last Hell Week of endless rehearsals, we were all living off of a practical IV drip of caffeine. Pier: The students and faculty responsible for our last B-1 day, although I don’t think that they resorted to espresso shots, displayed similar dedication and commitment. Zhang: Thanks to their efforts, we were touched by the courageous and heartfelt stories of the panel, and entertained by the creative video. Pier: But the arts weren’t the only area in which our class excelled. This year, Cheshire High School has been home to a number of state championship teams. In the Winter, our Boys’ Hockey team won its second state title in four years with the support of a crowd of SuperFans, dressed in a sea of black. Zhang: Our Boys’ Epee team, in its first year of being a recognized club sport at CHS, captured its own state title. And in the Spring, we learned one of the most important lessons outside of the classroom: Pier: … Staples will never beat Cheshire in any state final. Our volleyball team did this year what the football team did last year in capturing a state crown at the expense of Staples. In doing so, it preserved the zero at the end of its perfect, undefeated record. Zhang: The real test of support, however, comes not from the volume of our cheering section in times of triumph, but the volume of empathy our hearts contained in times of adversity and loss. Pier: This year we remember and recognize Greg Schena, Mrs. Kelmachter, and Ryan Lee, who all touched the lives of countless individuals. In the wake of their passing, we were able to see the true strength of this Cheshire community.
continued from page 5 turn to mentor, guide, and make decisions that will be positive to all. As we leave the halls of CHS, let's take with us all our memories, our friendships, our lessons, beliefs, experiences, and knowledge that we all can make a difference and be better people. Gandhi began his statement with the word “Be,” so let's be confident, be brave, be knowledgeable, and be strong, and we will be able to make great changes. I hope you all hold this quotation close and call upon it whenever you need to, and I promise you — you will make a difference. I am honored to have known each and every one of you and I wish you all the happiness and success in your future. Always remember to be, to change, to wish, and to see. Let us go forth as the CHS Class of 2011 and let us “be the change we wish to see in this world.” Good luck, best wishes, and congratulations. Thank you.
