Play With Dinos At The Maritime Maritime Aquarium
10 North Water Street Norwalk, CT (203) 852-0700 www.maritimeaquarium.org
Kids love to “play” dinosaurs, and that pretend world comes to life – almost – this summer when The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk presents a “Dinosaur Summer,” highlighted by a new exhibit of life-sized robotic dinosaurs.
The exhibit opens June 18 as part of a dinosaur triple play (through Labor Day) that also includes the IMAX movie “T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous” and the simulator ride-film “Dino Island II 3-D.” The robotic exhibit pairs young
and adult dinosaurs in letting kids imagine what it was like to grow up as a dinosaur: how quickly young dinosaurs grew, how big they got, what they ate, and how they were protected. See Stegosaurus, with the line of bony plates across their backs; the long-necked Apatosaurus; the crested Parasaurolophus; and, of course, Tyrannosaurus rex. The dinosaurs move and roar, but are fully lighted – not dark and scary – in an educational exhibit fit for the youngest visitor. One “cut-away” robot will even let kids see how the dinosaurs work. The exhibit is presented by Purdue Pharma L.P. Enhance your dinosaur experience with the rollicking “Dino Island II 3-D” ride-film. In this 10-minute experience, join an international team of scientists
trying to save prehistoric animals from an island about to be destroyed by a volcano. Strap in to the team’s all-terrain/submersible vehicle to encounter flowing lava, an angry Stegosaurus, a primordial swamp, and Tony the T-rex. And the IMAX movie “T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous” is a fictional adventure about a teenager who travels 65 million years back in time.
Other excellent IMAX options this summer are “Born to Be Wild” and “Dolphins,” all playing daily on our six-story screen, Connecticut’s largest. And we haven’t even mentioned The Maritime Aquarium’s sharks, seals, river otters, jellyfish, and more. It’s affordable family fun in nearby Norwalk, just off Interstate 95.

Prospect Flooring On Scott Road Continues Family Business
Doesn’t everyone know how difficult it is to get good, reliable help these days? That is exactly what started Anita on her new career path. During her first career as a hairdresser, Anita worked quite happily in a Waterbury salon for 30 years. She wasn’t looking for a new career, but hearing her husband complain about the unreliable help “drove” her to check out his company. In an industry that relies on quality service, Anita’s husband was struggling. He had the quality product lines his customers needed, but not the good, reliable help to install them or follow up with the service. Anita thought, “Let me have a hand at it and see how difficult it really is.”
She has been running Prospect Flooring with her husband now for 29 years and it’s been a good match. Their son and Anita’s mother help run the store, too. Anita says the rage now in flooring is laminate — the perfect combination of beauty and durability. It is chip-resistant and is three times thicker than other direct pressure laminates. It is also moisture resistant and doesn’t require a separate underlayment, as with a glued laminate floor. A full-line store, Prospect Flooring also carries hardwood, vinyl, a large display of ceramic tile, and all major quality brands of carpet such as Mohawk, Queens, Shaw, BlueRidge, Berbers, and more. Anita says Ber-

Let Charlie Take Care Of Your Favorite Watches We
all know that proper maintenance is important to the things we care about in our lives: our homes' heating and cooling systems, our automobiles' tires, lubrication, and safety equipment. What most people do not know is that our watches need periodic care as well. Watches that have batteries need to have the battery changed once a year. Do not wait for the watch to stop. Batteries left in too long can leak and cause corrosion damage that can be more expen-

Before we know it, schools will be out and the roads will be bustling with drivers of all ages. Many new drivers will take to the roads for the first time this summer with a new found freedom and all drivers need to be ready. At GreenLight Driving School, our top priority is to make sure that the drivers we train are as prepared as possible for the situations that occur daily. Here are just a few tips for parents who have teens that are or will be new drivers.

*Patience: For many of us, it’s hard to remember the first time we went driving with our parents. Patience is probably the most important component in learning how to drive. Remember to remain calm and understanding while your teens are on the road. They are just learning and need your support to be the best drivers they can. *Always keep a safe following distance: Tailgating the car in front of you only makes that driver more nervous and prone to making mistakes. Remember to keep at least four seconds behind the car in front of you and to brake sooner rather than later. Always look at the traffic ahead of you, not just the car. *Speed: Speed limits are not just suggestions, they are the law. Keep your speed low and your teens will model the same behavior. *Safety: Practice what we preach. No cell phones while driving. Remember that teens who see parents using cell phones while driving think it’s again okay for them to do it as well. Hopefully these quick tips will help to ease your teen into the driver’s seat. So, once you have reached the decision to proceed, where you start can put you on a smooth track to getting the project completed in a professional, timely manner and, most importantly, within your budget, with a professional swimming pool contractor. The best way to find a contractor is through a referral or friend who has used the business and is happy with their services. Outside of that, contact a few reputable businesses that have been established, can give you references on the spot, and offer follow-through services such as a retail store for all your pool needs, water analysis, and a service department that
is familiar with the products you will have on your pool. Make sure that, first and foremost, they are licensed and insured. Those unlicensed and uninsured may give you a better price on the job but you leave yourself unprotected should the job be incomplete or worse. You may want to ask how long their employees have been with them, a signal of whether they are a good employer to work for and if the crew is experienced, not just seasonal. Most companies will go out to your home and give free estimates as to the cost of the project. If you get more than one estimate, then compare apples-to-apples as to what you are getting with each (filter system, style of plumbing, number of return lines). There is

top of the line and cheaper equipment, so do your homework. Ask if excavation is included and up to what level or amount of hours. One company may list something as an option while another may include it in the package. A good estimate includes the total package, which will give you an idea of not only what the pool itself will cost but also what you will need in your budget for the elec-

trician, water, fencing and decking and also offers referrals so, should you not know anyone in those fields, the process is streamlined and it all gets done. The bottom line is that the cheapest estimate may not be your first choice. After considering hard facts, you will also follow your gut: such as that you heard good things about this guy, or you liked the way this one envisioned what your yard would like when
completed, or one was more of a salesman, the other seemed more honest about the whole process, etc. Remember, this is a big ticket purchase and, hopefully, a relationship where you deal with the company for years to come and in the end you have to be able to feel good that you are dealing with someone you can trust. Questions and comments are always welcome. Check us out at www.prospectpoolsllc.com.
In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson invented the first Popsicle. He created it completely by accident. Frank accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch. He awoke the next morning and found a frozen pop! He first named his frozen pop an "Epsicle", but when he got older his kids asked for "Pop’s" sicle and the new name was born. Popsicles are more popular than ever today, with Cherry being the number one favorite flavor.

Registration is now open for the Kids on Campus summer enrichment program at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Available to all kids across western Connecticut who are entering grades 4-10 in the fall, the twoweek program offers 36 courses in art, music, dance, cooking, games, sports, outdoors, science, and technology. Students will find themselves moving from indoor and outdoor classrooms to art studios, to computer and science labs to kitchens and theaters. They can choose to dance, draw, sing, play an instrument, cook, hike, or design anything from fashion to websites – take better pictures and edit them, repair computers, reconstruct a dinosaur from its bones, predict the weather, solve a crime, or become a junior architect. Babysitting training courses are available for young adults and SAT workshops will be held for high school students. The program runs from August 1 through 12. Two courses – ceramics and theater – will run for two weeks while other courses will be one week only. Courses are scheduled as half-day or fullday sessions and are available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 to 4 p.m., or 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A lunch recess will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. for anyone staying a full day. Classes will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. Kids on Campus is held at NVCC’s main campus at 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury off exit 18 on Interstate 84. training of horses. River’s Edge also offers a weekly Summer Day Camp Riding Program for beginners to more experienced riders, from July 5 through August 28. The farm has been in its current location for 12 years and has helped hundreds of riders learn more than just riding but also values of caring, compassion, confidence, and team work through relationships with their equine friends and one another. At River’s Edge there is a high level of safety awareness and integrity, which underscores all that they do. Both children and adults can be found riding at the farm in any season or weather. In addition to their two outdoor rings, they also have a large indoor arena.
River’s Edge is owned and operated by Susan Horn, a lifetime equestrian. Her dedication to excellence can be seen in their qualified, competent staff and safe, gentle horses. Susan has many accomplishments to her credit, including qualifying riders for national, regional, and state competitions. Susan also received this year’s Presidents Award from the Connecticut Hunter/Jumper Association for distinguished service to the equine community. River’s Edge has produced many champions and yet also tends to the needs of beginner riders with the same level of commitment. In 2010 and 2011 the River’s Edge IEA Equestrian Team qualified four riders for the IEA Nationals.
