could eat whatever and whenever she wanted.

She married at 19 and weighed 8½ stone but after having two children, she weighed 10 stone. As a busy mum, her weight didn’t seem a priority and Tracey would often skip meals and snack on crisps and nuts. But by the time she was in her thirties, 47-year-old Tracey, who lives in Flint, weighed 12 stone. Although her weight wasn’t a priority, her confidence was at rock bottom. Tracey said: “Ten years ago my husband and I took a sailing holiday. I couldn’t really relax, as I wouldn’t wear a swimming costume or anything even slightly revealing. Photos were out of the question.” On her return home Tracey saw a photo of herself – probably the only one she’d allowed to be taken – and realised just how much weight she had gained, something she could no longer ignore. She weighed herself and was shocked when the scales registered 12stone 11lb, the heaviest she’d ever been. For several months, Tracey tried fad diets, losing a few

pounds but gaining them just as quickly. She said: “The diets were just unrealistic, so inevitably I failed.” She discovered her neighbour’s daughter ran a Slimming World group and was encouraged to attend her first group meeting. Tracey said: “ I was made to feel welcome and the consultant and the other members were so encouraging and friendly.” She said: “I never felt hungry and could not believe how much I could eat. If I wanted a treat, I could have one using my daily syn allowance. If I had a special occasion or was going out for a meal or a drink I could still fit this into my plan and use flexible syns.” Tracey achieved her target, losing 2½ stone. She was delighted. But instead of continuing to attend group as a free target member she thought she could go it alone. By 2007 her weight had crept back up so she returned to group and was soon back on plan.
