Celebrity style secrets W

e’ve all got a favourite place in our home, whether it’s sitting at the old, faithful kitchen table or being curled up with a book by the fire. And the same is true for the celebrity ambassadors who appeared at this year’s Ideal Home Show in London – including George Clarke, Linda Barker and Diarmuid Gavin – who reveal their favourite rooms and give their interiors predictions for 2011.

George’s cosy corner

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Linda Barker.

Architect and TV presenter of Five’s Build A New Life In The Country and Channel 4’s Home Show, George Clarke lives in London with his wife Catriona and their three children, in an Edwardian house he’s completely restored, inside and out. “I have a snug retreat in a corner of my open-plan lounge which is completely tailored for me,” he says. “It’s at the garden end of the house next to a window and I have a wood-burning stove and bookshelves filled with all my favourite books on buildings and design.” Favourite pieces: “An original Eames chair and ottoman footstool in walnut and leather, and a Saarinen Tulip side table,” he says.

Get the look: Eames Lounge Chair and Stool, £4,847, from Heal’s and Go Modern’s Tulip Side Table, from £310. Trend tips: Ample light is key to today’s successful rooms, says Clarke, and glass will increasingly play a part in design, as will lighting used imaginatively to change mood and atmosphere in rooms.

Diarmuid’s oval sanctuary

som and birds. It’s carpeted in powder blue, with blue velvet curtains for the floor to ceiling windows and a freestanding bath by the French doors, so you can look out on the breathtaking views.” Favourite pieces: A Conran desk, which he and Sir Terence Conran used at the launch event of their book, Outdoors. “It was so special to do a book with him that I bought the desk, and looking at it brings back brilliant memories,” he says. Get the look: Walnut and steel Eileen Desk, £815, from The Conran Shop; Graham & Brown’s Kyoto Cherry Blossom Wall Prints, £100 each. Trend tips: An organic gardening approach – making your own compost, growing produce and natural-style ponds to attract wildlife – will grow in popularity, predicts Gavin.

TV garden designer Diarmuid Gavin, who first found fame on BBC’s Home Front, has a family home in Wicklow, Ireland, which he shares with his wife Justine, and their six-year-old daughter Eppie. “Our new oval-shaped bedroom is turning into the highlight of our home,” he says. “I’ve merged two bedrooms into one to create this unusual curved shape because it feels soft and all-encomGET passing. THE LOOK: “We’re having a The Stanley Comfy Chinese-style mural Chesterfield Sofa from painted on one wall £1,490, Darlings of Chelsea. featuring cherry blos-

kitchen

Changing Rooms and ITV’s This Morning, has a two-bedroom retreat in North Yorkshire which she and her husband Chris, and daughter Jessica, 18, use at weekends and holidays. “My favourite room’s our large openplan kitchen and dining room with a large glass extension, so there’s an uninterrupted view of the countryside,” she says. “The decor’s characteristic of my style so it has a rustic feel but with a contemporary twist. The walls are a midgrey shade, the kitchen units are white gloss, topped with black work surfaces made of thick, polished concrete, and I have slate splash backs. “We’ve used wide solid oak boards for the floor and brightened the room with collections of coloured glassware and ceramics on a dresser, and there’s a big comfy leather sofa for lounging.” Favourite piece: A barrel-shaped stool with a silver finish. Get the look: Brass Frette Stool, £195, from Lombok, and a Stanley Comfy Chesterfield Sofa, upholstered in leather, from £1,490, from Darlings of Chelsea. Trend tips: An eco-chic look, inspired by ‘alpine chalet style’, using recycled timber will feature this year, says Barker, as will metallics on wallpaper and bronze, gold and nickel furniture finishes.

Savvy fashion T

hese days the austerity style club is the only one to join. Rather than splashing out on the latest catwalk trends, design divas are cutting their budgets and sitting prettily on their savings, writes Lisa Haynes.

Thankfully, with this season’s trends – 70s, florals and flowing maxi dresses – fashion revival is big news, so you can tweak vintage looks straight into 2011 mode. Author of Savvy Chic and vintage addict Anna Johnson believes in the cost-cutting business of fashioning more from less. “In the grip of a luxury-driven culture, it’s become very hard to discern between what is vital and what’s just lust,” she says. “Dressing well for less money actually involves buying less and better clothing, rather than more and cheaper. It takes discipline.” Prepare to thrift shop. Trade in your treasures and DIY your dresses – there’s a whole new wardrobe waiting that won’t cost you the earth. Charity shops are like Marmite, you either do or you don’t. But there’s an art to wearing other

people’s clothes. Johnson explains shoppers need to amend, adjust and embellish outfits to suit themselves. “With maturity I’ve found that vintage dresses rarely suit me off the rack,” Johnson says. “I cut them up freely, grafting on different sleeves, stripping off bows or ugly buttons, adding my own cuffs, or using the fabric to make something else.” Don’t expect to walk into a vintage shop and find a replica of a 70s-esque Chloe Mousseline blouse from this season, currently on sale for £680. It’s too much to expect a hem length or neckline to fit with current fashions, according to Johnson. “Vintage materials can be an invitation to reinterpret style. Mix it up. Be bold. Look hard at the way designers play with the contrast between fabric and cut.” Top tip: Take the time to figure out which decade highlights your hottest assets. While the androgynous floaty 70s are fab for tall, boyish shapes, the waist-enhancing 40s and Mad Men-inspired 60s will emphasise a curvy

frame. Fast fashion may appear to be all-singing and dancing while on the rails, but once you’ve worn that catwalk copy once it can lose its appeal. “Their promise is that of instant transformation, but more often they wind up as gaudy landfill in your closet,” Johnson says. Face your shopping addiction demons and lay all your can’twear-won’t-wear splurges out on your bed next to your can’t-livewithout staples. “Work out a way to build a bridge between the clothes you love (but never wear) and the standbys (pieces starting to wear thin with overuse),” Johnson suggests. “If your wardrobe is heavy on casual wear but running dangerously low for work and evening, invest in pieces that can be used for both – for example the LBD (little black dress). “Very simple additions stretch the clothes you do have.” Top tip: Stock up on hats, scarves, costume bangles, oversized sunglasses and hosiery in rainbow colours to instantly revive a tired outfit.

pring is here and it’s the perfect time to give rooms a fast facelift so they’re ready for brighter

“At this time of year it’s easy to feel winter will never end, especially if our homes are still dressed in dark colours and heavy fabrics,” says Louise Barltrop from Dunelm Mill. “A few simple touches can cheaply and quickly transform your home. Bright pinks are on trend and florals blooming.” And clearing up the clutter ahead of that annual ritual – the spring clean – could be a good excuse to invest in pretty storage that’s decorative as well as practical. “Flowers, fruits and patriotic designs are strong this season and pretty boxes adorned with cherry blossom, strawberries or flags are our most popular,” says Sabrina Sandha at interiors specialist, Store Twenty One. Just making a few changes can transform rooms, says Kirstie Allsopp, presenter of Channel 4’s Location, Location, Location. “I’ve just organised my children’s toys, which had started to take over. Tidying them away in new colourful plastic storage boxes has already made the room look great,” she says. “I also love putting new things up on walls to give them an inexpensive facelift. I’ve framed collections of postcards and even tea towels. “And as a finishing touch, I’ve got new

table lamps for essential splashes of colour to brighten up dull corners.” Top tip: Use chalkboard paint on a wall so the kids can draw on it, or apply magnetic primer and invest in some colourful, magnetic letters and shapes. Spring sunlight is a welcome sight and banishes the gloom, but its bright rays can highlight dull walls and jaded room schemes. Even refreshing a feature wall with paint or paper could be an easy, cheap way to rescue a room. “Bold florals, statement patterns and vibrant colours are huge right now,” says Neil McLennan, deputy editor of Livingetc magazine. “Wallpaper collections like Graham & Brown’s tap brilliantly into these key trends. Modern and easy to live with, these wallpapers are both confident and assured without being shouty or taking over the room.” Top tip: Smarten up wall sockets with screwless socket covers. Turning everyday items into planters and vases – from tin cans and milk bottles to mugs and jugs – will make even a small collection of fresh flowers eye-catching. “I love filling pretty vases or jugs with daffodils at this time of year and dotting them around the house. It’s simple, gives instant cheer and doesn’t cost the earth,” says Clare Price, founder of The Contemporary Home. Top tip: Bring instant glamour and sparkle to a gloomy room with a chandelier, or use clusters of tea lights to add a twinkling glow.

Cushions are the costume jewellery of homes; affordable, an easy way to reflect trends and brilliant at giving an old sofa or chair a new lease of life. “At this time of year, when we are tantalisingly close to the lighter nights and brighter days, we’re all craving colour,” says Kate Mooney, managing director of Occa-Home. “If your taste is demure and you’re not ready to experiment with metallics, zingy bright colours or pattern – all of which feature in this season’s trends – you can incorporate them into your rooms in a liveable way with cushions.” Top tip: Change door handles or knobs on cupboards to give them a quick lift – ceramic and glass details work extremely well.

Most people see this as a sign that it’s a reliable, above average specimen which will perform well in the right conditions. But plants have to go through a rigorous process before the coveted logo can be added to the label. Only around 34 new plants are trialled each year and it can take three years upwards before the AGM is awarded, and more for trees or slow-growing plants. Since being introduced in 1922, more than 7,000 plants have received the Award of Garden Merit. New plants are trialled at one of the RHS gardens or at a selected nursery or specialist grower. A panel of committee experts then meets to discuss and assess the merits of the plants, with input from plant heritage experts and National Collection holders. “There are five criteria, which are looked at as a group and not individually,” Jim Gardiner, RHS director of horticulture, explains. “The first one is excellence for ordinary use in appropriate conditions. The next is that the plant is available in the trade at some level.” This means that a widely grown, popular plant, for instance Lavandula hidcote, would have to be widely available from retailers nationwide to qualify, while a less popular plant, such as a trillium, should be available from appropriate outlets or specialists who grow that type of woodland garden plant.

The other criteria are that the plant must be ‘of good constitution’, which means it is known to be healthy, and ‘essentially stable in form and colour’, performing to its description. So, if for example you were buying a variegated plant, it’s not going to revert, says Gardiner. It’s also got to be reasonably resistant to pests and diseases. “For instance, there are some herbaceous plants that succumb to mildew when put under stress. What we are saying is that if it gets mildew very quickly, it won’t be given the Award of Garden Merit.” Climate will inevitably have some bearing on a plant’s performance. Some plants will do better in warmer regions in the south than in cooler northern areas. This is again something the RHS is hoping to tackle when it hosts the world’s first international trials conference at RHS Garden Wisley, in Surrey, in July. “As part of our international trials conference, we’ll be having a debate about hardiness ratings, linked to the Award of Garden Merit,” says Gardiner. This may mean that in future people will be able to more easily understand what ratings their plants fall under at the point of sale. At present, it’s not compulsory to include hardiness ratings on plant labels. Even when growers do include the information on the label, the current rating of one to four is not as clear as it should be, says Gardiner, and the RHS is hoping to extend the rating from one to seven. “Responsible growers are putting the hardiness ratings on their labels. If it’s not on the plant tag, it should be at the point of sale. “It’s in the growers’ interest to make sure they put it on because, inevitably, the hardiness over the last few years has been tested to the limit.” This year the RHS is carrying out a ‘sunset review’ to ensure that the AGM list is up-to-date and that plants which have been superseded by better varieties or are no longer available, are dropped from the list. The new logos will be drip-fed into outlets through the year, gradually replacing the old ones. Logos may change but the aim remains the same. “When people go to nurseries or garden centres, if they look for the AGM logo they know there’s been a huge amount of investment, not only in time but in knowledge and expertise, to know they’ll be getting a first class garden plant,” says Gardiner.

The magic of spring F

rom Saturday, March 26, the Walled Garden at Norton Priory Museum & Gardens will once again be open to the public.

The beautiful Georgian walled garden was created by the Brooke family in the 1760s, when they were still in residence at Norton Priory. The walls of the garden keep the temperature a few degrees warmer and allow a wide variety of plants and fruits to be grown here. A sure sign that spring is finally here are the lungwort and daffodils and hopefully soon the bluebells will be showing in the woodlands; you can also learn more about the historic varieties of

fruits grown there, including the national collection of tree quince. To celebrate the opening of the garden there will be a plant sale on Sunday March 27. With a range of plants grown by the gardeners and volunteers, as well as Norton Priory preserves and juices, there will be something for everyone, whether experienced gardening enthusiasts or interested beginners. There will also be a special ticket price of £2 for entry to the Walled Garden on the Sunday, so why not go along and see the garden getting ready for spring. Head gardener, John Budworth, says: “This is my favourite time of year; the

garden comes alive with spring and shows all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes over the winter.” There will be a new addition to the plant sale this year with Groovy Gardens Enterprise, a company created by pupils at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy. The Walled Garden Tea Room will also be open weekends, serving drinks and a selection of cakes and snacks. ● Further details on opening hours and admission prices can be found on the website www.nortonpriory.org. Norton Priory will take part in the Gift Aid scheme from April 1, which will help to support the Norton Priory site and programmes.
