SEE YOU AT THE DISTRICT CAMP!

CAMELOT!

(9.45 am to 4.30 pm) at the District Scout Centre. This course meets the requirements of Module 10 of the adult training scheme. Please also remember that Leaders need to have a current first aid qualification, with First Response being the minimum. First Response needs to be renewed every three years. Bookings for the course should go to Hazel Petch, Tel: 01244 381034 Email: hazelpetch@yahoo.co.uk

TRAINING INSIGNIA As well as your Wood Badge when you complete your adult leadership training, those who complete Getting Started are entitled to their choice of either a Gilwell woggle or a Gilwell pin badge. Contact David Bull or Dave Evans if you are entitled and don’t have yours! On Saturday 17 April 185 Beavers and Cub Scouts, with 67 Leaders, left Chester to visit Camelot Theme park where they joined over 2000 Beavers, Cubs and Leaders from Cheshire. They had great fun on the various rides 'Whirlwind', 'Excalibur', Pirates galleon, Jousting Knights and braved the ride 'Knightmare' which was not for the faint hearted! You could also spot those Leaders who had braved the log flume or “Pendragons plunge” with their Beavers and Cubs as they came off soaking wet, but thanks to the glorious weather everyone was soon dry and grinning ear to ear. Both performances in the Arena were packed with Beavers and Cubs and you could hear the cheers across the park as Sir Lancelot defeated the evil knight in the Jousting. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make it such a great day!

WORLD SCOUT CONFERENCE – BRAZIL Are you passionate about Scouting? Do you want to get your voice heard? Do you want to have your say on issues that affect Scouting around the world? The Scout Association is looking for two people aged 1825 to represent the UK at the World Youth Forum from the 3 to 6 January 2011 and the World Scout Conference from 10 to 14 January 2011 in Curitiba, Brazil. The conference and forum happen every three years and drive the development of Scouting around the world.

'It’s fantastic to witness such a huge surge in Scouting the biggest growth for thirty eight years - and it is proof that Scouting is appealing more and more to teenagers. Scouting is empowering, wild and fun, and offers so many adventure-based activities for young people and adults alike. My goal is for every young person that wants to be involved in Scouting to be able to be. So I hope to inspire even more adults to volunteer and help this happen.'

ST GEORGE’S DAY 2010

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience Scouting on an international level, to meet new people, to learn how Scouting operates globally and to form lasting partnerships with Scouts and Guides from across the continent. If you’ve got a lot to say about Scouting and welcome a challenge, apply now! Applications close on Friday 25 June 2010. Apply on-line at www.scouts.org.uk/worldsc Any questions call Patrick Rooke on 020 8498 5451 or international@scout.org.uk

SCOUTING SEES BIGGEST MEMBERSHIP SURGE IN 40 YEARS UK Scouting has experienced its biggest growth spurt since 1972, taking total membership to 499,323. Census results show 16,568 new adult and youth members in the UK since 31 January 2009. This is 3.45 per cent up on last year (2009: 482,448). This impressive surge in membership – the fifth consecutive year of growth – has helped cement Scouting’s position as the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country. A large part of the growth is due to record numbers of teenagers joining. This is the fastest-growing age group with new members in the last year up 5.4 per cent on 2009. This means there are now 66,299 teenagers in Scouting – over 26 per cent more than when detailed records began in 2001 (52,481). For the second year running, The Scout Association has seen a rise in adult Leaders with growth up from 2.7 per cent (2,505) in 2009 to 3.1 per cent (2,871) this year. But despite this growth, waiting lists to join Scouting remain at an all-time high due to the need for more adult volunteers. While The Scout Association has been able to create over 13,500 new places this year thanks to 2,871 new adults volunteering their time to local Groups. There are currently over 33,500 young people waiting to join Scouting throughout the UK.

Chester Cathedral welcomed nearly five hundred Scouts, families and guests for the annual St George’s Day parade and service 0n 25 April. Many thanks for such a good participation in the service - the Cathedral was packed and the Bishop remarked on how good it was to see it so full. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Chester were the principal guests. We tried some new things, so opinions on what went well and what we could improve are essential - please bring your views to the next District meeting on 13 May. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the day go well. We hope that they - and you and your members enjoyed our time together for this special Centenary celebration. The Gang Show team were prominent in the service and for the first time we went to the Dean’s Field for a get-together.
