Tournament Starting Options Strait Tee

This option is ideal for smaller groups (16-72 players). Each foursome will tee off at the first (1st) tee in sequential order.

Modified Shotgun Best option for groups with 72 to 120 players. The entire tournament will start at the same time.

Full-Field Shotgun

This option is designed for groups with 128+ players and requires that the full course be used. Two groups start on each hole. All players will start and finish at approximately the same time.

Tournament Formats Best Ball Twosome

2 persons play as a team, taking handicaps as they fall on the card. Lowest score on the hole with handicap counts toward the team's best-ball score for round. Only the lowest score on the hole is counted. Team having the lowest 18-hole score wins.

Best Ball This format may be played as 2, 3, or 4 person teams. Golfers play their own ball on each hole, the lowest score is then recorded to be the team score. This format may be played with or without a handicap. This is usually a fun format with a medium pace of play. Results can be calculated quickly.

Scramble

This format is probably the most enjoyable type of tournament because only the good shots are played and the pace of play can be very fast. All players hit a tee shot. Then, the best tee shot is selected and all players take their next shot from that point. The process is repeated until the ball is "holed out". The team records a score. The winning team is the one that records the lowest 18-hole score. This format promotes easier and faster scoring.

Shamble

This format is also one the more enjoyable types of tournaments because like a scramble you use good shots only for a portion of the hole, but you also get the opportunity to play your own ball. Each person hits a drive, the team selects the best one. From that point each player plays his own ball through the hole. The team records a score. The winning team is the one that records the lowest 18-hole score.

Skins

A match play tournament; a "skin" is a point given to the player with the lowest score on a given hole.

Special Events and Contests Closest to the Pin (KP)

Prize awarded for the shot that comes to rest closest to the pin; normally played on the par 3’s.

Closest to the Pin on 2nd Shot

Prize awarded for the shot that comes to rest closest to the pin; can be played on any hole on the golf course except the par 3’s

Longest Drive (LD)

Prize awarded for the longest drive off the tee-box, in the fairway; normally played on the course's longest length par 5.

Longest Putt

Prize awarded to person making the longest putt on a specific green. Recommend this contest is played on the course's putting green at the clubhouse prior to the start of the tournament to promote a fun and competitive atmosphere yet providing a reasonably rapid pace of play.

Shortest Drive

Prize awarded for the shortest drive off the tee-box, in the fairway; normally played on the same par 5 of the longest drive contest; or on a hole with a natural hazard between the tee box and the fairway, i.e. a lake, marsh, ravine or cliff.

Straightest Drive

A white line is placed down the middle of the fairway. The drive off the tee-box that comes to rest closest to the line is the winner; normally played on the course's last par 5 but not necessarily the same par 5 used for the longest and shortest drive contests.

Circle Hole

A white circle (diameter to be determined by you) is drawn around the hole on a par 3. Prizes are given to those who hit their tee shot inside the circle.

Tournament Planning Planner “To Do's” 9 Have group arrive "on time" no later than 30 minutes before starting time and/or first meal function. 9 Alert the course how the group will be arriving; motor coach, limo, vans or individual. 9 Have complete and legible NAMES on each golf bag. 9 Provide pre-tournament agenda listing starting times, locker room usage, catered functions and golf, and which expenses are the responsibilities of each golfer. 9 Provide the player's list to the course no later than 72 hours prior to the event. 9 Notify and have delivered to the course, all sponsor signs, welcome banners, tee markers or contest prizes, no later than 72 hours prior to the event. When shipping to course; address all shipping labels to the "attention of": (tournament director) and note "hold for (tournament and date)" to ensure proper delivery and holding. 9 If using a master bill (or full payment at the completion of the event), provide and make KNOWN to the host club the list of person(s) authorized to charge to the group's account. 9 If length of playing time is a concern due to daylight hours (seasonal); planned functions before/after the tournament back at the hotel; and/or difficulty of course, here are a few hints to maximize the playing time: 1) Select the proper tournament format for the level of players. 2) Limit the number of contest holes; too often there are too many and each takes twice the average length of time to play given the prizes offered. 3) Start on time. 4) Promote "ready golf" - remind players to: Have (or purchase) golf balls, tees, tee markers, divot repair tools. Carry an extra ball in their pocket at all times. Carry your putter with your other club when within chipping distance of the green. Be ready to putt when it’s your turn. ONLY ONE practice swing for each shot. Keep track of score throughout the hole/game. Add and record scores away from the putting green and en route to the next hole. Check to ensure all clubs used for chipping and bunker shots are picked up after putting. Purchase food and beverage items only when it is clearly not your turn to play.
