ISLAND HOPPING IN PORTUGAL: WHY NOT?

Far from continental Portugal’s shoreline, in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, two archipelagos – the volcanic islands of the Azores, and Madeira – offer some of the most stunning scenery in Europe, on its westernmost edge.

The Azores, 1,400 km west of Portugal’s shore, is made up of nine islands. It’s useful to group these into west (Flores and Corvo), central (Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial) and east (Sao Miguel, Santa Maria and the Formigas Bank). Sao Miguel is by far the largest, and most popular of these islands. A direct flight from Toronto to Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, is only five-and-a-half hours. >

The main islands of Madeira, southwest of Portugal and 600 km west of Morocco’s shores, are Porto Santo, the Desertas (actually its own archipelago of small islands, designated a nature reserve), and Madeira, the largest, known for its namesake wine.

Madeira is about a two-hour flight from the Azores and considered the most touristy of the islands.

Each island offers its own pleasures and personality. Lilac-covered Terceira is home to summer festivals, primeval laurel forests, patchwork vineyards and a perfectly preserved Renaissance town. Flores is an island botanical garden with spectacular coastal hikes, waterfalls and lava tubes.

There’s tiny, old-world Corvo for bird watchers, and sleepy Graciosa for those seeking tranquility. The mountainous Madeira is not a beach destination, but it’s got some of the best surfing in Europe. And of course, there’s the wine.

The wonders of the islands include opportunities for hiking, spelunking, scuba diving, and swimming with dolphins.

Travel These autonomous regions of Portugal are among the best whale-watching spots in the world. From April through October, several different types of whales pass by the islands on their migratory paths.

Consider how much holiday time you have and play connect-the-dots with a map of the region: look at the islands closest to each other and start from there.

In the Azores, for example, it’s a one-hour flight from Sao Miguel to Faial Island, and from Faial to Pico it’s a 30-minute ferry ride (Faial and Pico are also easily accessibly from Lisbon). There are daily flights from Sao Miguel to the much smaller Santa Maria. Total flight time? Ten minutes.

There are several daily flights from Lisbon to Madeira Airport, touching down near the capital of Funchal, less than 2 hours after take-off. From Madeira, travel to nearby Porto Santo by plane (15-minute flight), helicopter or ferry.

When Sara Bederman Design was brought in to design the interior of a country home in an ultra-modern family cottage setting in the Kawartha Lakes region, the team was eager to define the direction of the interior.

Would it be country rustic set in the modern architecture of the home or did the client wish to continue the ultra-modern aesthetic throughout the interior design as well? True to the values of her design studio, Sara Bederman knew that the first thing to do was to consider the impact that the outside surroundings had from inside the home. >

Sara wanted to make sure this home was a true reflection of the homeowners, a place that told their story and reflected their desired aesthetic.

The huge glass windows that look onto the lake established an immediate connection to the natural setting of the home. What happened inside had to enhance the beauty filtering in from the outside. In addition, as one of three new cottages built on the property, Sara wanted to make sure this home was a true reflection of the homeowners, a place that told their story and reflected their desired aesthetic.

With 3 young children, this cottage had to be ready to take on a lot of playing, entertaining and nesting. Sensible finishes were essential, but beauty could not be compromised. The kitchen, set as open concept to the adjacent great room, was designed to maximize ease of use. Fast paced food preparation is definitely the future for this kitchen so cabinet interiors benefitted from storage and organization solutions. Appliances were planned in an efficient triangle with a wide isle through the middle of the working counter and oversized island.

Clean, contemporary, white cabinets were topped with a hardworking white quartz countertop. This combination offers easily accessible use and maintenance. Hardwood-style vinyl flooring added a warm, nononsense floor cover that will withstand wet swim towels, sandy feet and even snowy boots. The goal for this kitchen design was to provide an overall timeless style while serving all the diverse and demanding needs required by this family. Sara and her team made sure that their clients' goals were not just achieved, but surpassed.

Stainless steel appliances added an industrial element to the space and gave the kitchen an urban edge. The highlight of this familyfriendly kitchen was definitely the gorgeous reclaimed barn board wall cover. This finish added warmth and texture to the otherwise sensibly finished kitchen. The barn board feature is a nod to the beautiful, tree-filled landscape filtering through the spectacular large windows found throughout the home and is an unexpected finish inside the ultra-modern architecture.

Seated at the long kitchen island, atop sturdy swivel stools, you are treated to a pleasing view whichever way you turn. Whether it be the lake, the land or the interior of this beautiful home, balance and harmony meet hardworking and family friendly. Being an artist can be hard-hitting, and financially unpredictable. What gave you the courage to pursue a career in art?

As a young artist you need encouragement and I was blessed with two parents who believe in me. My parents are educated Europeans who value the importance of art, and they nurtured my gift. They were the ones to research degree programs at OCAD and I can safely say that I wouldn’t be a professional artist if I hadn’t studied there. My teachers saw that I had a good eye and they encouraged my work, which meant a lot coming from practicing professionals. >

the ART of conversation You began your career as an illustrator; what was the turning point for you to becoming a waterscape painter?

After I graduated from OCAD in 1995, I worked as a freelance editorial llustrator. As stock illustrations became mainstream, my industry slowed and I decided to paint full-time and show my work professionally. I participated in the Cobourg Waterfront Show and had a view of Lake Ontario from my booth. Over three days, I watched the waves break in front of me. I started photographing lakes and oceans, and water quickly became my focus.

What has kept you fascinated with painting water over the past dozen-plus years?

From an artistic standpoint, it’s challenging to capture water. Emotionally, water connects with people on a primal level, like fire. Water is reflective and colourful, but it is also translucent. If you hold up a cup of water, it can’t be seen. I like to say that I’m in the business of ‘Tom Foolery’; I paint nothing all day!

Tell me about the lakes and landscapes that inspire your work.

We’ve been a family of cottagers for many years moving from Georgian Bay to Kasshabog Lake, in the Kawartha region, four summers ago. While the topography and colour of water are similar between the lakes, Kasshabog Lake is smaller, and its water surface is more serene.

The Canadian Shield unifies lakes across Ontario and is predominant in many of my paintings.

What unique approach have you taken to painting waterscapes?

Most recently, my work has been influenced by Pop Colour – I start with a neon acrylic underpainting and apply natural oil colours on top. More than Just a Solution to Density

fter years of lobbying, in June of 2018 the city of Toronto and East York amended bylaws to allow laneway suites as a right of planning.

These structures allow for endless possibilities

and offer a platform for design and ingenuity that Toronto currently lacks. Think of the opportunities.

You could build one to use as a wine cellar or for extra storage, or utilize a second-storey laneway dwelling loft as office space. They can be used for separate living quarters for kids returning from university, for the in-laws, or a nanny – or you could use your laneway suite for an additional income stream to help

pay down your mortgage. These small homes are not only quick builds, but turnkey and affordable, reasons which make this movement an obvious choice as we evaluate the current housing climate in Toronto.

Currently, the Toronto housing landscape is in a revolutionary state. As rental vacancies plummet to an all-time low, with less than 0.7% of rental supply in Central Toronto, and the cost of homeownership increasing at a much faster rate than household incomes, we find ourselves at a precipice. Either we address the missing middle and more affordable housing options are made available, or we jeopardize the cultural variety and vibrancy Toronto is known and loved for as the more vulnerable and marginalized are forced to move farther and farther outside the city. The Toronto Real Estate Board states: "Ensuring that our City has an appropriate mix of housing choices is extremely important. We have a substantial amount of high-rise condos and rental apartments, and low-rise detached homes, but there is a gap in the middle. We need more ‘gentle density’ and variety in housing options for home buyers and renters.

Secondary suites as a right of planning are a part of the answer in this regard."

The Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB), the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI), Evergreen (not-for-profit urban planning group), the Canadian Urban Institute and a number of other stakeholders are working hard to highlight creative initiatives which will inspire professionals to do more – faster and better. Without this push, we would perpetually be at a standstill and continue to fall further behind in finding solutions for affordable housing in a tight market with little inventory.

We can celebrate some victories within the housing industry, such as Ontario mandating secondary suites, a motion that Jon Love, the Founder and CEO of Canada's leading private equity real estate investment business, KingSett Capital, believes is long overdue. But the city of Toronto and our city councillors should be actively considering how to change the red tape around secondary suites. The Government of Ontario’s Legislative Framework, Section 16(3) of the Planning Act, requires municipal official plans to authorize secondary units: “in detached, semi-detached and row houses if an ancillary building or structure does not contain a second unit” and “in a building or structure ancillary to these housing types provided that the primary dwelling does not contain a second unit” (Municipal Affairs and Housing).

It is encouraging that the city of Toronto is gaining some traction with laneway suites as it promises to alleviate some of the housing pressure and low rental vacancies that currently afflict the city. Although Toronto has recognized the value of secondary suites through laneway homes, it is merely the start. Toronto now possesses the framework and tools for a viable solution that will help relieve some density pressure: utilize underappreciated spaces in the city and allow creative and artistic design to make our city an even more vibrant place. However, looking at fast-tracking coach

houses and auxiliary dwellings and removing the red tape on secondary suites in the city is now falling behind the province’s framework.

Another hurdle we must address is fiscal responsibility.

It is important that financial institutions learn and adapt how to loan money that represents the value for laneway suites.

To help move this process along and allow homeowners to build these dwellings, they will require access to capital.

Once institutional banks are onside, this project will not only be reasonable and attainable, but will be one step closer to fruition.

The value that laneway suites will add to the homeowner, as well as the city, is incalculable. Not only will this inventive housing solution assist with bridging the missing middle, but laneway suites will add character, additional security, provide supplementary income to homeowners and provide an affordable option for many who are struggling to find housing within the city’s core. It is an opportunity to build unique and creative living spaces in areas the city would otherwise leave unmaintained, and will diversify and densify walkable and desirable city neighbourhoods which currently have a low population.

The extraordinary population growth is expected to double in urban areas over the next three decades. This creates an urgent need to build millions of housing units for sale and rent at an affordable price. Ditchburn

a classic beauty that continues to captivate

It’s hard to imagine that as Henry Ditchburn put the finishing touches on his first Ditchburn Pleasure Boats vessel he could have foreseen the passion his watercraft would continue to evoke some 149 years later.

itchburn boats are among the most sought-after by collectors in Muskoka and abroad. It only takes a glimpse of one of these gorgeous watercrafts to understand why they are held in such high regard among the pantheon of handcrafted wooden boats.

The history of Ditchburn boats is closely linked to the history of Muskoka itself, and the town of Gravenhurst specifically. But the Ditchburn family’s boatbuilding roots run back to a time before Europeans had ever set foot in Muskoka. Henry’s ancestor, William Ditchburn, was a naval advisor to Queen Elizabeth during the Sixteenth Century, and the original Ditchburn boatworks produced vessels of great renown from their base of operations in Blackwall, England.

In 1869, Henry Ditchburn, along with his brothers William, John and Arthur, emigrated from England to Canada and settled in the town of Rosseau, which was on Ontario’s rugged northern frontier at the time. The brothers quickly realized that their multi-generational boatbuilding expertise could be put to good use as part of the fledgling resort and tourism industry that was starting to incubate in the Muskoka region. By 1874, the brothers had constructed a fleet of 24 rowboats which they would rent out to guests in the region.

In 1890, the newly established H. Ditchburn Co., under the leadership of Henry, moved their base of operations to Gravenhurst. The town saw a great deal more traffic due to its prime location on the railroad.

Ditchburn began adding gasoline-powered launches to their existing line of rowboats in 1898. They specialized in building custom gas-powered launches by hand, using high-end materials. The vessels typically had engines in the front and cockpits in the rear, with a focus on function, beauty and design.

In 1904, the aging Henry granted ownership of the company to his nephew, Herb Ditchburn, who partnered with Tom Greavette. The company greatly increased production during the first two decades of the Twentieth Century, primarily catering to the wealthy cottage owners who were increasingly congregating around the big lakes of Muskoka. >

feature In 1915, the company suffered a serious setback when their Gravenhurst factory burned to the ground. But it wasn’t long before they were established and producing watercraft from a new, brick facility in Gravenhurst; one that would stand for the remainder of their operations.

Ditchburn was the largest boat manufacturing company on Lake Muskoka with 30 employees in 1921, expanding to 60 by 1923, and (after opening a second plant in Orillia in the mid-1920s) a high-water mark of 130 men by the 1930s.

The company had come a long way from building rowboats for tourists to building lavish luxury cruisers over 100 feet long for wealthy clients from New York to western Canada.

Like many other businesses across North America, Ditchburn was crippled and eventually ruined by the Great Depression. They produced their last vessel in 1938.

During its tenure, Ditchburn produced a number of remarkable vessels, although the vast majority have now been lost forever. One of their more notable vessels was the Kawandag II, which was constructed for John Eaton of Eaton’s department store renown. The Kawandag II was a 73-foot yacht made entirely of mahogany, and was considered the gold standard of boatbuilding at the time. >

Another vessel, the 28-foot racer Silver Queen, was built for circus magnate John Ringling, of Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus, in 1927. The vessel would become the template for Ditchburn’s popular line of launches that were known as the Viking line. They were capable of travelling up to 45 mph. Six vessels modeled on the Viking were also commissioned and put into service to patrol the Atlantic coast on behalf of the Canadian Government.

Ditchburn also created several racing boats, dubbed Rainbow, which competed and won in the highly competitive Gold Cup racing series.

After the Second World War, the focus of boat construction moved away from handcrafted vessels towards mass production and synthetic materials.

For those lucky few who own a Ditchburn, it’s become more than a status symbol or a pleasure cruising vessel - it’s a responsibility. The condition of many of the existing Ditchburns is a testament to those boatowners who have taken up the challenge with zeal. There will likely be Ditchburns for everyone to enjoy for many decades to come. IIS 34

Kinsip House of Fine Spirits: Taking ‘Local’ Seriously

ucked in the village of Bloomfield, in the geographic heart of Prince Edward County, family-run craft distillery Kinsip House of Fine Spirits will release its first 5-year-old single malt whisky this spring. Co-owner Jeremiah Soucie’s excitement is contagious.

In the fall of 2016, Jeremiah and his wife Sarah Waterston, along with Sarah’s brother Michael Waterston and his partner Maria Hristova, bought what was only the second craft distillery in Ontario when it opened in 2011. When the four new owners took over, the first thing they did was plant wheat on the property. It was a small crop, but they had big plans.

Prince Edward County has experienced a surge in artisanal food, craft beer, and wine producers and word has spread.

Only two hours east of Toronto, “the county,” as it is known locally, is an increasingly popular destination for day-trips and weekend getaways. Dotted with immaculate, stately Victorian homes, the county is home to fashionable restaurants serving farm-to-table meals, cool vintage and boutique shops in renovated barns, and stylish hotels with spectacular lake views. Kinsip’s farm-based distillery and onsite retail store are welcome additions to the area.

All of Kinsip’s products are fermented, distilled, and aged onsite. Their 77-acre property was a hops and barley farm during the days when those were the main agricultural products of the area. The original Oast House – a barn-like structure to dry and roast hops – is in working order, one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in the county.

The red-brick Victorian Second-Empire home on the property, the Cooper-Norton Residence, was built in 1874. Today it’s home to Kinsip’s retail store where they sell their popular whiskyflavoured maple syrup and a variety of cocktail bitters made from locally-sourced produce. Just 50 feet from the distillery are two of the few coopers (barrel makers) in all of Canada.

With three fall seasons under their belts, Kinsip owners have been experimenting with farming. Last year they added corn, rye, and barley, which they mill themselves. They work with local craft malter, Barn Owl Malt, to malt their grains for making their single malt whisky.

The concept of “terroir” (environmental factors that affect the flavour of a product) has typically been associated with estategrown wine, but whisky is also affected by local elements (think of the salinity of some scotches, aging in barrels for decades, near the ocean). Jeremiah Soucie explains that Kinsip is “trying to establish what our terroir is – what are the expressions of place, of this county, of this particular spot in the county? We barrelled our first locally-made corn whisky that’s truly ofplace, two weeks ago. We know it will taste delicious in 3 years, but at 7, 9 or 12 years, it’ll be a gem.”

Look for their products on LCBO shelves. The gleaming copper still at the centre of Kinsip’s operation is represented in the copper foiling on all their product labels. Plan a tour of the facility where you can enjoy their award-winning spirits (their Cooper’s Revival Rye recently won gold!) in cozy sipping rooms. According to Jeremiah, the farm-based distillery is easy to get to: “just off 62 – it’s a short hop from here to whatever else it is you might be looking to do in the county.” IIS

While housing costs continue to grow over time, average individual incomes remain little changed. In fact, a majority of millennials are making the same income their parents did at a similar age despite being better educated (adjusted for inflation). With such high housing prices in bustling urban cities, millennials are in turn considering cottages for their first home purchase.

The Toronto Region Board of Trade surveyed 803 young professionals and approximately 42 percent indicated they were likely to leave the Greater Toronto Area because of such costs. Real estate prices in Canada’s urban markets are altering lifestyle patterns and are a driving force in the relocation of millennials into recreational properties. Although millennials may not have necessarily moved into their cottage homes, the properties have instead become a way to enter the competitive real estate market. Housing costs in Canada’s major cities are driving millennials into surrounding markets, and today’s sharing economy has allowed for them to leverage their property as an asset and investment.

This increasing popularity of recreational properties is reflected in real estate listings and prices. Areas like Haliburton and Prince Edward County are experiencing a surge in pricing. Currently, the 2018 median list price for a waterfront property in Haliburton is $547,450 compared to $392,500 in 2017. Compared to 2017, the 2018 median price of recreational properties, including waterfront, nonwaterfront, and ski-in properties has increased by 13 percent across Canada. This has become apparent in Prince Edward County, one of Ontario’s most popular vacation destinations with a booming country market. With its thriving tourist industry, residents are already experiencing a housing shortage – primarily due to an excess of homeowners renting their properties seasonally on a short-term basis.

This unprecedented and non-traditional endeavour may result in drastic changes in our real estate market. It would transform transportation, affordability and, most importantly, working culture. The future, although bright, may be forever altered.

hen it comes to the best place in Canada to view autumn foliage, publications like Reader’s Digest and HuffPost have come to a consensus: Muskoka stands above the rest. In fact, Muskoka offers some of the most gorgeous landscapes in the country, 12 months of the year. If you want to take in as much of the view as possible, there are a few spots in the region that can take you to new heights. Some, you can drive to and they typically draw crowds of sightseers, while others are known mostly to locals and require treks down lesser-known routes.

Lions Lookout near downtown Huntsville.

One of the most easily accessible and panoramic views in Muskoka is the Lion’s Lookout. A 1.5 km trail, from the Canada Summit Centre near downtown Huntsville, leads up to the lookout but it can also be accessed by a paved road. There are places to sit and even to have a picnic lunch at the top as you enjoy a spectacular view over Fairy Lake and surrounding highlands.

To the east of Huntsville, iconic Algonquin Park has a number of spots to take in the view of the myriad landscapes below. The Track and Tower Trail runs a loop of 7.5 km that takes guests through an interesting historical journey before they reach a spectacular lookout over Cache Lake.

Dorset Fire Tower is one of the most popular destinations in Muskoka during the autumn colour explosion but the view is spectacular throughout the spring and summer as well. Situated on a ridge overlooking the Lake of Bays, the Dorset Lookout Tower (the old fire tower) itself is 100 feet tall and 465 feet in total, above the lake.

Visitors and locals have been making the trek up Huckleberry Rock in Milford Bay (between Bracebridge and Port Carling) for more than a century. Take a seat on a rock formation that is one of the oldest on the planet and enjoy the sunset over Lake Muskoka.

Track and Tower Trail of Algonquin Park.

Just north of Gravenhurst, off Highway 169, Walker’s Point Lookout remained a hidden gem for years.

Recently renovated by the Township of Muskoka Lakes, the one-kilometre lookout trail, known locally as Berry Mountain, provides another stunning view over Lake Muskoka.

In Gravenhurst, visitors to the Hahne Farm Trail can walk along the edge of a granite ridge as they look out over the marshlands below and on to Silver Lake.

Starting out from the trailhead on Bethune Drive, the trails offer loops that range from 2 to 5 km, winding through a mix of hard and softwood forest. IIS

One is off First Street, at the bottom of Hickory Street, the other one is on Cedar Street at Harbourview Park. Although not inside the arboretum, the Collingwood Labyrinth is near the Hickory Street entrance. This popular, paved walk encourages rest and reflection, an appropriate addition to such a transformed and peaceful site.

A WALK THROUGH HISTORY: Picton’s Long-Lost Castles

On a peninsula of lush farmland and sandy beaches, the Town of Picton is a picturesque and lively locality with striking architecture and a fascinating heritage. Recognized as the heart of Ontario’s historical Prince Edward County, the town remains a popular getaway destination for locals and tourists alike.

ome of Picton’s residents recall two magnificent architectural landmarks that once overlooked the bay. Not so long ago, the town was home to not just one, but two castles on Bridge Street.

Towering over the Picton Harbour, Castle Villeneuve and The Rickarton Castle were once significant historical landmarks in Prince Edward County.

Castle Villeneuve The Villeneuve Castle was a local landmark in Picton. First built as a small chateau, between 1840 and 1845, the structure was enlarged circa 1860. Its striking architecture was widely recognized as one of a kind; with four towers and twenty-five rooms, the castle was known for its grand ballroom and elegant staircase.

By the 1970s, Castle Villeneuve had become the Inn on the Bay and its restaurant was popular with local residents. During the days leading up to January of 1986, the weather had been cold. The basement sewer drain froze and attempts to thaw it resulted in a propane explosion. The blast ripped upwards and the magnificent castle went up in flames.

Although brave firemen and local residents aimed to get everyone out of the building safely, the fire resulted in one tragic fatality, and that night the Town of Picton lost over 140 years of history. Locals remember the scenic view of the harbour from the castle’s huge two-storey bay window, its bustling restaurant and the irreplaceable stone ballroom – the setting of many happy events.

The Rickarton Castle A few blocks over on Bridge Street stood another beautiful work of architecture: Picton’s second castle, The Rickarton. Initially built as a small imitation of Warwick Castle in Warwickshire, England, the Rickarton Castle was a well-loved local site. What had started as a small, symmetrical house in 1860, later developed into a magnificent medieval-inspired castle.

By 1863, The Rickarton had a massive square tower, crenellations along every roofline, and Tudor gothic verandahs overlooking the harbour. The three-storey fortress later took on a new life as a hotel and party spot for locals who enjoyed its breathtaking Chandelier Room dance hall, gothic décor and scenic boat house. Unfortunately, The Rickarton met its end after a developer purchased the land, and, by a vote of town council, the monumental Rickarton was set for demolition in 1991.

Although both castles were demolished, they are still recognized as an integral part of Picton’s identity and history. IIS

Sculpture Forest Merges Art and Environment

estled on the shores of Head Lake, in Haliburton, you'll find a truly enchanted forest.

At the Haliburton Sculpture Forest, 34 sculptures of all description line the scenic trails as they meander through Glebe Park. This unique outdoor art installation first started in the autumn of 2001, with just three sculptures. Three years later, the Haliburton School of Art + Design opened its doors to aspiring and established artists from across the country and around the world. The school, a campus of Sir Sandford Fleming College, was also constructed in Glebe Park and now the sculpture forest and the trail that connects the artwork surround the campus. The forest serves as a teaching site for these students, as well as an area that’s open to the public.

The idea was sparked by a visit from one of the park’s board of directors to the popular Grizedale Forest outdoor art exhibition in England’s Lake District.

The goal of the park’s organizers was to take some of the intimidation factor out of art. The idea was sparked by a visit from one of the park’s board of directors to the popular Grizedale Forest outdoor art exhibition in England’s Lake District.

Instead of being kept behind glass or velvet ropes, each piece of artwork at the Sculpture Forest is specifically situated to interact with, and be immersed in, the surroundings, while providing unobstructed views to visitors. The sculptures are so userfriendly that artists and donors are advised in advance that the pieces must be able to withstand children climbing on them.

The project was initially started by the Haliburton County Development Corporation, who also placed sculptures in nearby

communities like Dorset, Wilberforce and Stanhope. Starting with just three sculptures, the project grew to include many more, primarily as the result of donations. As part of the Canada 150 celebrations in 2017, the forest welcomed four new sculptures from Czech, American and Canadian artists.

Overall, more than two dozen Canadian and international artists have contributed their sculptures, and three uniquely designed benches, to the forest. The goal is to add one new installation to the forest every year. The sculptures have been created using everything from oak and steel, to limestone and locally-quarried granite. Because of their permanent location in the sometimes-harsh climate of Haliburton, the sculptures must meet certain stipulations. They must be tall enough to be visible during the winter snows, meet certain safety standards and be designed to last at least 25 years outdoors.

The park is open 12 months a year and each one of the changing seasons presents the sculptures of the forest in an entirely new light. Visitors can even access the park during the winter when the walking trails are transformed into crosscountry skiing trails. During the rest of the year, the Highlands Bike Trail runs through the park, which is also home to the Haliburton Highlands Museum.

These days, the forest welcomes an average of 10,000 guests every year. It’s free to enter the park but donations are appreciated.

Guided tours of the forest are offered every Tuesday at 10 am.

ifestyle trends come and go, but there is one interior design movement—open-plan living—that has stood the test of time. Doing away with walls in kitchens, dining rooms and living areas is one of the most popular requests of interior designers, whether working in historic, countryside properties, or new-build apartments in city centers.

Homeowners want light-filled, fluid spaces that help them live in a modern way—and some of the most desirable, beautifully rendered homes of recent years incorporate a simple principle: keep walls and closed-off rooms to a minimum. But it’s not a terribly new idea.>

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House in Hyde Park, Chicago, designed in 1910, had a radical new layout for its time with an open-plan living and dining space separated by a sculptural fireplace. The kitchen was still considered a service area, but after World War II, the rigid use of rooms in a typical American home made way for the great, open spaces prevalent in Mid-Century Modern architecture. New ideas about entertaining made the soaring, vaulted ceilings, full-height windows, and multilevel, open-plan living areas of the modernist era possible.

Fast forward to the 1980s and the next surge in open-plan living, when the glamour and grit of New York City’s SoHo loft-living revolution captured the imagination of city dwellers around the world. Once derelict industrial buildings latterly occupied by artists and musicians in the 1960s and 1970s became desirable real estate for the city’s financial elite, who descended in droves during the Reagan era. They transformed sprawling warehouses into stylish abodes that were splashed across the pages of interiors magazines and immortalized in films like Big, where Tom Hanks famously careens around his airy loft on a skateboard.

The New Norm Through the 1990s and 2000s, the idea of openplan living seeped beyond cities to become a ubiquitous feature of upscale suburban homes.

Today, kitchens are showpieces and places to entertain family and friends, while communal living areas are flexible zones for modern life.

Ed Ku, of New York interior design firm Coffinier Ku, says: “We love the informality and the social aspect of everyone being together in the same space, even if they’re doing different things like cooking, watching television, or chatting.

That’s a huge positive for us. We like that open plan essentially forces people to interact.” The designer has worked on various open-plan schemes including a Chelsea apartment and a spacious SoHo loft. Both projects use elements like sliding doors, lighting, rugs, and furniture to delineate space.

“Things like consoles, shelves, and counters can be used to separate spaces, but you either want to keep them relatively low, or open if they are high, so the space is still unified. Lighting plays a huge role, with chandeliers especially important over dining tables or counters to help guide the floorplan. And we always think that you should follow your heart with color,” says Ku, who agrees that open plan is thriving in all types of homes.

“We actually just completed a project where the most successful aspect was incorporating an open plan into a 100-year-old Colonial so that it was a mix of traditional and contemporary living,” he says.

South African design and architecture firm Saota has created luxury homes all over the world including Los Angeles; Lagos, Nigeria; Sydney, Australia; Mallorca, Spain; and Senegal in West Africa. “Open-plan living is at the core of our ethos… we prefer the versatility of open plan to insular, compartmentalized rooms,” says director Mark Bullivant. Bellagio, a stunning villa in the LA hills that blends indoor and outdoor living in the spirit of Brazilian Modernism, uses architectural features like ceiling plane and different levels to define the home. “This reduces the vastness and distinguishes living areas from one another,” says Bullivant. The results are often spectacular, with Bellagio a contemporary take on the easy, breezy Modernist vernacular that LA is famous for. >

Naturally Luxurious In fact, some of the most thrilling residential architecture of our time is pushing open plan to the extreme, as with Pam & Paul’s House in Cupertino, California, designed by Craig Steely Architecture. Its spare, thoughtful design is an ode to the genre, showing that honest materials like wood and concrete, endless natural light, and a visual connection to nature are as much, if not more, of a luxury than conventional interiors with ornate roomscapes.

WELL-DESIGNED OPEN-PLAN HOMES ARE HERE TO STAY, AND THAT MEANS LAYERING FOR VERSATILITY.

But open-plan living has its downsides. Noise and cooking aromas can be hard to contain, and sometimes light and openness come at the cost of privacy and rooms reserved for formal occasions. “Open plan often means that a formal dining room goes away because of space limitations in most apartments or houses,” says Ku, who suggests that a visibly “used” kitchen might not always be the perfect backdrop to a dinner party.

There are also cultural considerations, says Akira Mada of Mamm Design, a Japanese practice responsible for the ethereal Kai House in Kofu basin. “Our traditional houses are not built as masonry but as timber-grid frames with movable partitions, so some Japanese clients tend to choose open plan,” he says. “But our lives have been modernized and westernized, and our clients needed to have a certain level of privacy. So we created partitions that are not full height but low rise, and open to the interior.”

“Well-designed open-plan homes are here to stay, and that means layering for versatility,” says Pol Theis of New Yorkbased P&T Interiors. His open-plan project in NYC’s Garment District features pivot and pocket doors, movable glass partitions, and generous passageways that wrap around a central box area, providing ample light and a backdrop for high-gloss, black-lacquer panels. “Open floor plans offer opportunities to take advantage of natural light… This, in turn, offers opportunities to experiment with color and contrast,” Theis explains.

Ultimately, for better or worse, open plan is here to stay, and will continue to evolve. But the benefits of a free-flow home seem to outweigh any disadvantages. Bullivant certainly isn’t in a hurry to change the status quo: “Culturally there are still parts of the world that prefer totally separated parts of the home, but the vast majority are open. It’s very hard to imagine why it would change.” IIS
