Welcome to Chestnut Park’s Summer issue of Invest In Style. This is the issue that you can tuck into at the cottage (glass of wine optional), take with you on your summer vacation, or just put your feet up at home and lose yourself in the world of wonder and style while visiting some of the world’s most exotic and charming locations. We are proud to present this issue of Invest In Style to our more than 82,000 readers. Our cover story features the work of Michael Nguyen, founder of Garrison Bespoke in Toronto. It is not an exaggeration to say that Garrison Bespoke is the suit maker to the stars, as the cover photo with tennis pro Milos Raonic clearly demonstrates. In other features, you will marvel at the Lexus AWD RL 350 and the Super Air Nautique 623, two superbly engineered machines, one for the road (and perhaps the open track) and the other as the boat (a term that seems inadequate) that leads the water sport industry. The Nautique 623 won the Rider’s Choice Award as the Wakeboard and Wakesurf Boat of the Year. If exquisitely crafted machines are not your thing, we offer you a variety of pieces on art. They range from our interview with painter and collage artist Emily Filler, to the arts and cultural renaissance of Toronto’s Yonge and St. Clair area, home of legendary pianist Glenn Gould and the location of Chestnut Park’s flagship office.

Make sure you don’t miss the eight-storey mural at #1 St. Clair Avenue by Phlegm, the internationally recognized UK street artist. The phrase Phlegm came from one of the four temperaments in ancient Greek medicine. Do you enjoy reading and learning about food? This issue offers articles on gourmet popsicles, farmers’ markets in Georgian Bay and Grey Bruce, the food scene in San Sebastiàn (considered by many to be the gastronomic capital of Europe), and more exotic locations featured in our article on gourmet travel. Some of these include the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges in Courchevel, France, Mavros Safaris in Zimbabwe, and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives. These are only a sampling of the many stories and articles we have included here for your reading and visual pleasure. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention our historically relevant articles, namely, the McDonald General Store in Foot’s Bay, where two generations of McDonalds continue the family tradition by working as sales representatives in Chestnut Park’s Foot’s Bay office, where previously the family ran a small general store. And the 63-year-old Mustang Drive-In located near Picton in Prince Edward County, one of the few remaining drive-ins in Canada. We hope you enjoy our summer issue as much as we enjoyed preparing it. We have attempted to achieve the same level of professionalism and quality in our Invest In Style magazine as we deliver to all of our clients when providing real estate services. IIS

Trends for Fall 2019
The hottest trend for Fall 2019 isn’t black faucets and natural materials, or particular shades of pastel. Instead, this trend-turned-lifestyle will shape our decisions about what to drive, eat and wear: environmental sustainability. SMART CLEANING TOILETS While scratching “clean toilets” off my to-do list is all the convincing I need to get a self-cleaning toilet, it’s not the main reason these toilets are a big deal. Most smart toilets use 20 percent less water than low-flow, 1.6 gallon-per-flush toilets and this is a big deal for your water bill and the environment. A 1999 study of 1,188 American homes revealed that “toilet flushes accounted for 27 percent of an individual’s daily indoor water consumption—more than washing machines (22 percent) or showers (17 percent).” A leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons a day. Before we get too pleased with our toilet upgrade, the same study found that “outdoor water applications accounted for 58 percent of overall domestic use.” Which brings us to our next household item for environmental sustainability.

Smarter Thermostats Thermostats are moving from the hallway to every place they’re needed – your bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room. Today’s thermostat has wireless sensors to measure temperature and humidity. This feature helps to balance hot and cold spots in your home. For example, new thermostats will shift heat from your stifling kitchen to your glacial basement in order to produce a just-right temperature throughout your entire home. What’s more, these units know when you’re sleeping and when you’re awake and adjust to your desired setting accordingly.
POLLINATOR LOW MAINTENANCE GARDENS
Water cleaner
Water preservation is leading the trend to create usable spaces that require minimal maintenance and invite local wildlife. Trending are plants that require little pruning and help with pollination by attracting bees, butterflies and other insects that pollinate. Grass is out and mosaic tiles are in, as well as woodchips and moss to cover shaded areas. Homeowners are also considering the needs of local wildlife by growing seed and berry products instead of grass lawns that suck up both water and time to maintain.
Oven spray cleaners are a toxic hazard to the environment – and a hazard to your health. Enter steam-based selfcleaning ovens. Appliance companies are creating steambased cleaning systems that require no scrubbing and no toxic cleaners. The enamel coating means you can effortlessly wipe off stuck-on drips after a 20 minute steam clean, as opposed to a traditional three hour “ self-cleaning cycle” that still subjects you to toxic fumes and tennis elbow.
Wall-mounted HVAC unit Apart from fan speeds adjusting whenever you step into a room, smart HVAC units also include high performance filtration features that clean and deodorize your breathing space. Similar to smart thermostats, room conditions will automatically adjust based on your human heat signature.
Smart dimmer Ever wonder if you left the lights on? Now you can check from your mobile device and remotely dim or set your own lighting schedule. Smart dimmers not only allow you to set a specific lighting schedule with full-range dimming, but they also adjust according to sunrise and sunset conditions. Smart dimmers will be a hit for any purchaser who wants to simplify her life with prescheduled on and off features, while reducing hydro costs and environmental footprints.
Low maintenance plants help attract bees, butterflies and other insects.
Even if you’re no biophilia enthusiast, it’s still smart to invest in smart toilets and thermostats to attract buyers while incidentally supporting the home we all share – the earth. IIS

Your collage work appears both organized and spontaneous, a challenging balance to strike. How do you approach your work? I like the spontaneous nature of collage. When working in the studio I find it helpful to keep a lot of materials and imagery around - you never know what the perfect thing will be to complete a piece. None of my work is entirely intentional from point A to point B; I go with whatever is happening in the moment. I like the element of surprise that collage provides, how two colours or patterns look next to each other can be totally unexpected. I think the most important thing is to constantly be observing what looks good and feels interesting. Isn’t that the creative process to an extent? Having an intention or a direction but being open to how you get there? Right! Sometimes I’ll have an idea for a painting that I’m really excited about, but as I start working on it, it doesn’t turn out the way I had envisioned. If you let the painting guide you a bit and are open to letting it turn into something else, the results can be unexpected but great. You have to be open to change. You’re known for your collage work but come from a classical painting background. How did that evolution happen? Years after I finished my BFA at Queen’s, I heard about something called ‘the 100-day project’ where you made one piece a day for 100 days as part of a series. After being out of art school for some time where there was (some) structure, I liked the idea of having an activity that forced me to be more regimented in my own practice. I made 100 small collages that I ended up calling ‘colour studies’ over the course of a few months. This project got me into collage and the idea of layering pieces and combining different imagery. Around the same time, I went to NYC and saw an Andy Warhol show and for the first time really appreciated the beauty of his silkscreens on canvas. I went home inspired to try silk-screening. But that project was one of the ones that didn’t turn out how I originally thought it would. I thought the stand-alone silkscreens needed something so I began cutting them up and layering them. Both the addition of silk screening and the collage project got me into a different mindset with my painting and that’s when my work really changed. > WWW.CHESTNUTPARK.COM | WWW.INVESTINSTYLE.CA

the ART of conversation
What happened when the 100-day project was over? When the project was over, I really missed it! While I continued making the small collages, I also started to make what could be called ‘collage paintings,’ incorporating all sorts of new elements into my paintings. It’s like I just scaled the project up. Then one day I was having coffee with a friend of mine who is a printmaker and he said, “You know, you’re kind of a collage artist now,” and that really surprised me because I always identified with being a painter. But it’s true, and having a collage mindset has really changed my paintings.
Paper Bouquet (pink + green vase) 22x30 inches silkscreen, collage, and acrylic on paper 2019.
What mediums do you incorporate into your collage work? I work with cut up pieces of canvas, transfers, silkscreens, photographs, paper, paint, pastels, anything really. The latest material I’ve been working with is cyanotype. It’s a photographic printing process that uses the sun to imprint the silhouettes of objects onto paper. That’s what is so freeing about collage – the variety. And it’s opened my eyes; now when I see a material, even a scrap of paper, I think about how I can incorporate it into my work. How has the gallery world received your work? The reception has been great. Interestingly, I think that the collage element in my work is part of what makes my paintings stand out. I like to think that because my work evolved in a very organic way, it’s a very different take on traditional collage. Tell us about your subject matter, which is predominantly flowers. Sometimes I think working with floral imagery is a slightly rebellious act. When I was a younger artist, I was given the impression that this was somehow a predictable thing to do, or not a serious subject matter. But I am trying to get people to see flowers in a different way. I think it is important as an artist for your work to come from a sincere place. There is something intangible about art, you can tell if the artist cared about making the work, or if they didn’t. Flowers have personal meaning for me, as they do for so many people, and I also think they are beautiful. I feel it’s a subject matter with endless possibilities and I’m just getting started. AUGIE’S ICE POPS CHILL OUT THIS SUMMER Plans for a summer party? Add a splash of colour and kid-sized fun with these unique gourmet treats.

j
anet Dimond, Owner and Chief Bottle Washer of Augie’s Ice Pops, got the idea for her gourmet popsicles after a trip to the US where a vendor selling flavoured shaved-ice caught her eye on the streets of Austin, Texas. The increasing popularity of street food hadn’t escaped her – “I love the feel of it, the authenticity of it” – and she realized that Toronto’s hot summers didn’t, at that time, offer any fun street food. With more than 25 years in the food industry, as a server, restaurant manager, caterer and new product consultant, Janet was well prepared to start her business: “All of my work background came into play. It was like I’d been practicing all those years to start this business.” Augie’s Ice Pops are made with fresh Ontario produce (in season) as well as tropical fruit – sweetened with organic cane sugar, Ontario honey, or maple syrup. Throughout the summer, two dozen flavours are on rotation, including: wild blueberry citrus, strawberry basil lemonade, cucumber lime and chili, and watermelon lemon and mint. “Our brand is super tasty fruit popsicles,” explains Janet. “My goal is high quality local product, and we make the fruit the star. We also do cream and dairy – Vietnamese coffee and Belgian chocolate cream are amazing.”
Janet and her staff (six fulltime in the summer) are always thinking up new taste combos. Adrianne Kulling, long-time Augie’s employee, came up with the idea for their bubble-gum flavour (dried beet to make these pops pink). It’s now a kid favourite and, says Janet, “parents love it because it’s all fruits and vegetables.” The ‘Artist Series’ of Augie’s Ice Pops was developed in consultation with local artists who created colourful patterns for flavour layers. Last summer, the theme for this limited-edition series was women artists in history. The Photo by: Corry Ouellette Mary Pratt version even garnered a tweet from the famous Canadian artist’s daughter: “my mom would have loved that!” What began as a corner stand at a neighbourhood yard sale in 2011 is now a thriving business. Augie’s Ice Pops are available in fine food stores across the GTA, including Pusateri’s, Whole Foods, The Big Carrot, Fiesta Farms, and Fresh & Wild, and at a variety of boutique shops, summer festivals and farmers’ markets. Nguyen’s ability to deliver service, his impressive roster of clients, and the massive success of his recent groomsmen service is not a product of privilege or simply being at the right place at the right time. Rather, Nguyen’s renowned service and anticipation of clients’ needs is a product of working as a stock boy at Holts, a salesman at Harry Rosen and Grafton & Co, and of watching his gifted seamstress mother sew dresses in the basement of their humble Toronto home. Nguyen is the only son of Vietnamese immigrants and pinpoints his fascination with fashion to his first holy communion. At the impressionable age of seven, for the very first time, he was able to grab attention away from his older, louder sisters when he wore his first suit – a white tuxedo. Nguyen recounts: >

“I went from being invisible to this moment where people were noticing me and suddenly treating me differently. This feeling of strength and confidence became an obsession closely linked with menswear.” Nguyen is more than just a creative with a great sense of style and ability to execute. He is also a businessman. He first completed the family-mandated accounting degree at York University and after his accounting stint with KPMG he studied design at George Brown College then launched his own tailor shop in 2007. While his success appears to be overnight, this couldn’t be further from the truth – he’s been working in the clothing business for over 29 years and, through hard work and diligence, attracted mentors such as founder of Club Monaco and Joe Fresh, Joe Mimra: “[Joe’s] been a client patron of mine since the start and the things he’s suggested have been integral to my success.” Like the suggestion to innovate. As the official tailor for the Toronto Football Club, the Raptors and Maple Leafs, Nguyen wanted to give Toronto’s athletes more than just a great style. He also wanted to deliver comfort. Enter stretch fabric technology. The fabric allows for better movement, comfort and breathability – the ideal option for an active man.

Thinking of becoming a spy? You may want to don Nguyen’s famous bulletproof suit. Worn by members of the Secret Service, professionals working in dangerous parts of the world and government officials, the bulletproof suit is the only one of its kind in the world. It weighs less than 5 lbs but can stop a 35mm bullet. With this type of specialization and attention to comfort and functionality, it’s no wonder Nguyen has an impressive roster of devout followers including rapper Drake, NBA star LeBron James, actor Ryan Gosling and music producer David Foster. He’s also been commissioned to collaborate with TV producers to make custom suits. The ever-stylish and powerful lawyer, Harvey Specter (actor Gabriel Macht), sports Nguyen’s custom suits on the TV show… Suits. While Nguyen has come full circle in his career – his Garrison’s Celebration Collection is now available at Holts, the very place he started in the fashion world, stocking shelves – he shows no signs of slowing down. It may be impossible because he’s emmeshed his life with his work. He spends his leisure time traveling to his company’s outpost in Vancouver and, more frequently, throughout Europe and Asia to sample new fabrics, get inspiration and attend the most influential fashion events. The trajectory of his career is a testament to the fact that there is no one path to success: “There are a lot of really valuable tools you can learn in retail and fashion. Maybe you’re not going to work in it forever, but you can learn how to sell, interact with people and provide excellent customer service. There is just as much value in working here as there is in working at a law firm or an accounting firm in the summer. Parents and mentors should recognize that.” IIS WWW.CHESTNUTPARK.COM | WWW.INVESTINSTYLE.CA

LEXUS AWD RC 350 (Radical Coupe) Even sharper and more daring (or radical) than the original, the 2019 edition of the RC coupe is a design departure from the normally cautious, conservative Lexus persona. Low and sleek, the RC targets a younger, driving-enthused buyer and it’s available in a wide range of models that will include (later this year) a race-track-ready (472-horsepower) limited edition RC F.

Wow! That’s a good looking sports car,” was my initial reaction and it was followed by another “Wow!” soon after settling-in behind the wheel of the intense yellow RC 350 F Sport test car. A super comfortable bucket-style driver seat was nestled in a wrap-around cockpit that right away seemed to fit, like a high-quality glove. My RC came with a 3.5 litre normally aspirated V6 engine that can generate 311 horsepower and delivers power to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. A Lexus Drive Mode Select system lets you choose between Normal, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Snow modes to match your mood and/or driving conditions. The Sport+ mode also allows a driver to customize a personal drive set-up.
Push hard on the gas pedal, however, and the V6 lets out a raspy tailpipe growl at high rpm. In drive, the power surge is immediate and perfectly progressive. While this RC already provides ample power and performance for most driving enthusiasts, the 5.0 litre V8 engine that powers RC F takes performance to supercar levels. An all-new 2020 MY version of the RC F will (for the first time) include a limited release Track Edition, for hardcore driving enthusiasts. Although it will use the same normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 that’s in the RC F, it’s lighter, faster and has more braking power. >
In addition to triple LED headlights and better aerodynamics, the RC now has a slightly wider stance and a lower centre of gravity. Hidden upgrades include new (adaptable) shock absorbers that provide more damping force and stiffer suspension bushings. There’s also an active noise cancellation system and cabin noise is impressively low, for a sporty car, at highway cruising speeds. “The new RCF and the Track Edition, in particular, benefit from constant development since their original launch. With the latest improvements, these models help further distinguish the F brand by offering fast, durable, highly capable performance cars that rely on a range of technologies to help make their performance accessible to drivers of all skill levels,” says Koji Sato, Executive Vice President, Lexus International.”

Combined with the new electronic launch control system, the RC F Track Edition will be capable of a 0-to-96 km/h (60 mph) time of less than 4.0 seconds. “The new RCF and the Track Edition, in particular, benefit from constant development since their original launch. With the latest improvements, these models help further distinguish the F brand by offering fast, durable, highly capable performance cars that rely on a range of technologies to help make their performance accessible to drivers of all skill levels,” according to Koji Sato, Executive Vice President, Lexus International. In addition to carbon fibre body panels (including a massive tail spoiler), the Track Edition sheds weight in key areas, like its Brembo carbon ceramic brake rotors, and it has titanium muffler and tail pipes. Rarely used on production cars, titanium also gives the Track Edition a unique sound. The Track Edition comes with an exclusive red leather interior with Alcantara seat accents and red carbon trim on the doors and dashboard. CHESTNUT PARK TORONTO OFFICE’S SMART RENO, NEW BUILD FOR PORT CARLING, AND HUNTSVILLE GETS A MAIN STREET OFFICE BY: LESLEY KENNY
Q: When should a 30-year-old luxury-oriented real estate brokerage update their office space? A: Probably before now!
Flagship office redesign for Toronto. Photo by: Mitchell Hubble
c
hestnut Park’s flagship office opened at 1300 Yonge Street in 1990 with less than 3,000 square feet. Almost 30 years later, the Yonge Street offices now occupy three floors and more than 15,000 square feet. While the company continues to grow under the guidance of CEO Chris Kapches, not much has changed in the intervening years in terms of the brokerage’s office design. The once-new cubicles (hello ‘80s) were looking dated and dingy. Old hard drives and 14” monitors sat mostly unused in a small gray nook. Time for some office landscaping.
From just four agents when it first opened, to 345 agents today, the brokerage attributes its continued success to the hard work of these agents and their dedication to exceptional client service. Erika Floysvik, Founder and Principal Designer of Fia & Company, says that the newly designed main floor “is a sign of the investment that Chestnut Park is making in its business and its agents. The redesign is really about building the culture at Chestnut Park. We wanted to make sure that the agents feel supported in their work. This in turn helps buyers and sellers of course.”

The new look is based on the open concept design first introduced into office culture in early 1900s New York by Frank Lloyd Wright. Initially considered to be an efficient way to pool workers, the open concept design has not been without its critics. Too much openness can be a problem, particularly in industries, like real estate, where privacy is an integral component of success. Erika Floysvik’s redesign for Chestnut Park’s Yonge Street office has kept the spirit and functionality of the open concept and added some important and contemporary modifications. The infamous real estate “bull pen,” a bare-bones bank of desks where, traditionally, new agents prove themselves before being offered an actual office, has been transformed into a bright and welcoming communal space. New, usbequipped bench seating with occasional tables, as well as café-style counters and stools, provide opportunities for conversation, collaboration and celebration. Contemporary white desks and cabinetry replaced the old cubicles and gone are the fluorescent tubes, replaced by LEDs (better for mood, the environment and the bottom line). The new carpeting is
26
made by a company that buys used fishing nets from coastal communities and repurposes them for use in their products (good for the fishing communities, the environment, and the durability of the carpet). In addition to the communal space with its variety of seating, new meeting rooms with frosted glass doors and window walls now denote the twenty-first century value of transparency in business, while providing agents and clients the privacy required for confidential discussions. Each of these rooms is equipped with a smart screen for presentations and agents can book one of the rooms through a new central booking system, using their smart phones. Chris Kapches says he’s “thrilled with the end result – [I think] it’s very reflective of Chestnut Park. It’s a firm steeped in tradition but with rapid changes in technology and changing approaches to real estate, we realized we had to change and create a more contemporary appearance for the firm while at the same time making the offices more functional. The world has changed dramatically since 1990. This redesign reflects that in a dramatic and artistic way.”

Artist Rendering. The Port Carling office re-design classic Muskoka look.
Port Carling Office New Build If you’ve driven through the town of Port Carling, you’ve likely passed the Chestnut Park office there. Except the company’s green sign on the building, the little gray and white gambrel-roof office blended in to the cottage community. But by the end of June, the new building will turn heads. According to Chris Kapches, Chestnut Park bought the land in Port Carling in the early 1990s: “The new-build is a gorgeous wood beam construction. We tried to create an office that reflects Muskoka and the kinds of higher-end cottages in the area. We wanted it to be reflective of the real estate we do and our commitment to the Muskoka region. No expense was spared! Our goal was to create and contribute something that enhanced the area and I think we’ve achieved that.”
Huntsville Main Street Office Opened Huntsville, the largest town in Muskoka, now has an official Chestnut Park office. Chestnut Park agents in the area have often worked from their homes, although they are officially connected to the Port Carling Office, a 45-minute drive southwest of Huntsville. Now you can meet with an agent at the Huntsville office – a leased space at 59 Main Street, between a craft brewery and a yoga studio (so, expect a relaxed yet dedicated ambience). The new office celebrated its opening in May. A flagship office redesign in Toronto, a new-build office in Port Carling and an office presence in Huntsville all beg the question: why all this bricksand-mortar investment when business culture is increasingly based on virtual means of communication? Simple, says Chris Kapches, “Chestnut Park provides full service and full service includes a bricks-andmortar presence where agents can meet with their clients. There’s an energy and synergy in an office context, where agents discuss the availability of offmarket properties and exchange market information.” He adds that, “Chestnut Park also provides state of the art marketing services to its agents and their clients, making Chestnut Park one of the most recognizable brands in the industry.” IIS

TORONTO’S NEW POP-UP MARKET AND DOWNTOWN NEIGHBOURHOOD HUB PHOTOGRAPHY BY: KAREN ESPINOLA
w
hat’s inside Toronto’s new moveable urban market made of shipping containers? It depends what day you visit.
Stackt opened for business this spring in an unlikely downtown Toronto spot – an industrial lot near the railway tracks at Bathurst and Front Street. Founder Matt Rubinoff leased the 100,000 square foot parcel of industrial land from the City (until September, 2020) and refurbished 120 shipping containers, arranged domino-style, to form a mini urban market that includes a variety of specialty foods, coffee, services, clothing, art and outdoor events. There’s even an on-site craft brewery. Belgian Moon (also made from shipping containers) that offers outdoor seating and a view of one of the four courtyards. The brewery room itself was open for a public peak during Doors Open Toronto in May. Stackt provides a much-needed cultural community hub for the King West neighbourhood which has seen a remarkable
increase in the number of new condos in recent years. More than 200, 000 live within walking distance of the new market and Matt Rubinoff hopes his specialty curated venture will also draw curious residents from other neighbourhoods, as well as tourists. The business model for Stackt is based on a rotating roster of local, national and international companies, from startups to more established brands (who are asked to do something different, like test out a new concept or product line). Recognizable brand names are sandwiched in between local start-ups and boutique services. When I attended the soft launch in April, tenants included Hayla Shoes, The Vegan Butcher, Carmel Flowers, Reunion Coffee, Donut Monster, RichFace makeup, BMO, and Inkbox tattoo, where you can get a tattoo that lasts for only two weeks, for under $20. Appropriately enough to their business, as well as the Stackt market in general, Inkbox’s in-shop sign declares “we’re here for a good time, not a long time.” >

At any one time more than 30 different businesses (and workshops, from DIY to yoga) will set up shop in the urban market and only a handful are signed on for the full duration of the lease. Some pop-ups will rent the space for only 10 days. These shortlived occupancies provide home-based businesses a short-term, affordable retail space opportunity and offer online businesses a place to show and sell their products in a bricks-and-mortar building. Without the bricks. Or the mortar. The dark gray shipping containers, each 280 square feet and all Ontario Building Code compliant, will soon be painted by local artists. “Every time someone comes down they will experience something different. There’s a lot on offer and a lot more to come. You could visit a few times in the same weekend and have different experiences. We’re even rotating our chefs through every three months,” says Rubinoff.

Outdoor programming includes movie screenings and pickup basketball games, opportunities for local artists and musicians, a speaker series, film festivals, comedy nights, food festivals and market stalls. Summer plans include a community greenhouse for nearby residents who don’t have a balcony and want to grow their own urban herbs and veggies. And those 14 railway tracks just to the south of Stackt? Plans are underway for a train-viewing platform. For the kids. Riiiight. IIS

SPANISH BASQUE COUNTRY GO FOR THE FOOD STAY FOR THE CULTURE BY: LESLEY KENNY
By all means brush up on your Spanish before you go, but rest assured, once you’re in Basque Country, words will fail you. From the cobblestone streets and baroque architecture of the old villages to the curvy, titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, this region successfully embraces its cultural past while it welcomes a cosmopolitan future. ucked around the Bay of Biscay, where cliffs plunge into the Atlantic, the Basque Country is not a country at all, although it does have its own language (Euskara), flag and proud history. The autonomous region straddles the border between northern Spain and southwest France, along the Pyrenees. A ceasefire declared in 2010 ended the violence which marked the region for decades, and ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity. Now the Basque Country, with its breathtaking coastline, contemporary arts scene and many Michelin-starred restaurants, offers an ideal European holiday. >

Beautiful San Sebastián.
Considered by many to be the gastronomic capital of Europe, food in the Basque Country is a mix of old-world cooking and twenty-first century culinary innovation. In San Sebastián there are more than 100 gastronomic societies, where men do all the cooking – and cleaning up. A few miles south of the coast, surrounded by gently sloping mountains, Bilbao’s vibrant cultural scene and extraordinary architecture helped make it the Best European City of 2018. Near Bilbao, Restaurante Azurmendi, the most sustainable restaurant in the world, has its own on-site winery, greenhouse and food lab. Barhopping is a sport in the coastal city of San Sebastián, where proprietors compete for your attention with the freshest and most delicious pintxos (“peen-chose”). These savoury hand34
held appies (similar to Spain’s tapas) are made with fresh, local ingredients, particularly fish and seafood, set atop a piece of crusty bread and held together by a large toothpick or skewer. While each bar (there are hundreds), has its own personality, most are loud and lively places. Amidst the friendly banter and dozens of colourful dishes, how do they keep track of what you owe? Simple – save your skewers and present them to be counted. Old world trust and new world economies. While you could easily live on pintxos alone, you don’t have to – the city boasts a number of Michelin-starred restaurants. Arzak, a three-star, four generation family-run restaurant, consistently lands on the list of top 50 restaurants in the world.

Another beautiful day at the beach in San Sebastián.
Old town of Bilbao, Basque Country.
Luxury beachside mansions and condos look onto La Concha, San Sebastián’s urban beach, framed by an ornate white railing, the iconic symbol of this old and beautiful city. Outdoor festivals, concerts, opera and children’s programming are all reasons why, in 2016, San Sebastián was awarded the title of Europe’s Cultural Capital. Rent a car and drive along the quieter roads to appreciate the towns and village of the Basque region. Hondarribia, a coastal village on the border with France, with its immaculate houses and colourful balconies, is a must for food lovers. In the centre of La Rioja Alavesa, the Basque Country’s main wine region, the walled village of Laguardia sits on a hill. The village was built long ago on a series of tunnels and cellars, for military purposes. Now local wineries use the cellars for wine-making and many welcome visitors to appreciate their centuries-old artisanal process. The microclimate in La Rioja Alavesa is almost always sunny in summer. You may already know Gaztelugatxe by its other name, Dragonstone, from the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. The rocky islet in the Bay of Biscay joins the mainland by a set of steep, curving steps, set into a narrow stone foot bridge. Perched atop Gaztelugatxe, a tiny chapel, rebuilt many times since its medieval origins, offers jaw-dropping views of the dramatic Basque coastline. Make your way Bar sign in the old town of Donostia.

THE NEW YONGE + ST. CLAIR HOW THE LOCAL BIA IS BRINGING ARTS AND CULTURE BACK TO MIDTOWN TORONTO BY: MACKENZIE KEAST, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, YONGE + ST. CLAIR BIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY: THE YONGE + ST. CLAIR BIA
Not many people from outside of midtown Toronto will say ‘let’s check out what’s happening at Yonge + St. Clair.’ Even with an amazing mix of retailers and large corporate offices, it’s an area that had the worst kind of reputation: no reputation at all. But times are changing, and the Yonge + St. Clair BIA has embarked on a multi-year strategy to reshape the area’s narrative and attract new visitors with arts and cultural amenities.
y
onge + St. Clair’s history was shaped by the arts. It was home to legendary pianist Glenn Gould, two movie theatres, and was a destination for fine fashion. Although much of that history is physically gone, Yonge + St. Clair’s DNA is inescapably tied to these cultural roots.
Yet in the recent past, the neighbourhood has been overlooked by many as they seek amenities and attractions more easily found at Yonge and Eglinton or Yonge and Bloor. So how do we bring that culture back to a neighbourhood with no galleries, theatres, or major event spaces? Enter the Yonge + St. Clair Business Improvement Area (BIA). Formed in early 2018, our primary goals are to populate the area with arts and cultural experiences, generate attention, and to attract new visitors. The strategic actions of the BIA - combined with a renewed sense of opportunity by local property owners and merchants - is re-writing the area’s narrative and helping to shape a new Yonge + St. Clair that cannot be ignored. Just before the BIA was established, Slate Asset Management commissioned an 8-storey mural by internationally acclaimed UK artist Phlegm on the side of their building at 1 St. Clair W. The mural depicts a gigantic human form comprised of Toronto landmarks. The artwork became an instant icon for Yonge + St. Clair and set the tone for the cultural amenities yet to come. Midway through 2018, the BIA began preparations for a winter installation that would create a destination for holiday shoppers. Their challenge: design a unique cultural landmark with a holiday theme while being innovative enough to make the public want to visit. >

Working with local artists Studio F Minus, the BIA developed the ‘Tunnel of Glam,’ an 80-foot long tunnel comprised of over 14 million reversible sequins. The sequin material, a popular fabric used on children’s toys and clothing, is a tactile experience that allowed visitors to physically alter and shape the installation. It was the largest single use of the reversible sequin material ever undertaken in the world, creating a stunning visual impact. The Tunnel was built in late November of 2018 and opened publicly for the first time on December 1. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Local news outlets shared the story of the magical 80-foot sequin tunnel. It attracted thousands of daily visitors during its four week run, with the Tunnel often being completely full while eager visitors waited outside for their turn. Photos of the Tunnel went viral, receiving over 1.2 million impressions on social media. Best of all, it brought people of all ages to the neighbourhood on the weekends when Yonge + St. Clair is typically slower. The Tunnel is now in storage, awaiting its revival during the 2019 holiday season. Interacting with the Tunnel of Glam.

They’ve also developed partnerships with local arts events to bring those experiences to the neighbourood. In January of 2019, the BIA partnered with DesignTO (formerly the Toronto Design Offsite Festival) to add installations and programming as part of the two-week festival. The BIA collaborated with local property owners and artists, bringing 12 art installations to the area. It was the largest agglomeration of art in the festival program. A walking tour of prominent installations was hosted by DesignTO, together with a free public lecture featuring local Toronto creatives. This is just the beginning. The Yonge + St. Clair BIA will soon re-launch the Summer Music Series, bringing musicians
to the neighbourhood’s streets. They’re working on the installation of a new mural that will create another landmark for the community. They’re planning installations for the summer. They’re growing more partnerships with local arts programmers. And of course, they’re bringing back the Tunnel of Glam. The work of the BIA has only started, and doesn’t exist in a silo. It’s going hand in hand with the vision and passion of the local merchants, business owners, employees, property owners, and residents. Together, there is a shared belief in the potential of this community and the opportunity to create an exciting destination for the arts. See you at Yonge + St. Clair. IIS

PORTFOLIO OF EXCEPTIONAL CHESTNUT PARK PROPERTIES • MUSKOKA
Muskoka synonymous with cottage country – is a household name in North America. Situated around three large lakes (Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau), the Muskoka region was once dubbed the ‘Malibu of the North’ by The New Yorker, because of the number of celebrity estates in the area. Beautiful homes and well-appointed summer cottages offer breathtaking views of the lakes and constellation of private islands. Your experienced Chestnut Park Muskoka Real Estate Agent understands your discerning tastes. The number of local residents more than doubles in the summer when 100,000 seasonal residents join the 60,000 lucky permanent residents of the Muskoka region. But the privacy afforded by sprawling tree-covered properties and the vastness of the granite-carved area means that Muskoka can easily accommodate visitors while maintaining everyone’s privacy and sense of open space.
The Muskoka region is known for its exceptional dining, trendy shops, craft beer scene and contemporary art galleries and museums. Kids can choose from a variety of exciting summer camp programmes and families can join in the year-round cultural festivals. Call a Chestnut Park Muskoka Real Estate Agent to introduce you to this stunning region. When you’re not relaxing dockside, you can paddle. Whether you’re a serious kayaker or it’s your first-time trying to figure out how to sit in a canoe, you’ll revel in hours of scenic adventure. Or just take your paddle board out on a lake, early in the morning, and attempt some inspiring yoga poses. From the haunting call of the loon to the variety of trees and vegetation local to the region, Muskoka is a nature lover’s paradise. But if hiking is not your favourite way to appreciate the grandeur, there are boat cruises that will offer you a new perspective.

BUILDING A BOATHOUSE WHAT TO CONSIDER PHOTOGRAPHY: TAYLOR NULLMEYER
Muskoka boathouses are almost as iconic as Muskoka cottages. Brightly coloured or blending into the rugged shoreline of the Canadian Shield, there are as many styles of boathouse as there are ways to enjoy the lake. Before you even consider the number of boat slips you require, or the square footage of your balcony, there are a few crucial steps to take.
w
hich permits you’re going to need depends a great deal on where you plan to construct your boathouse. That includes who owns the property and in which municipality you plan to build.
Some municipalities allow two storeys with habitable living space, some only allow single storeys with no living space, and some don’t allow boathouses at all. Make sure your first call is to the local municipal office before you start drawing up too many extravagant plans. >

Muskoka Living
Most municipalities require builders to have their boathouses either designed or approved by an engineer, and all require you to have some sort of building permit. If you're building a new boathouse, there’s a high likelihood that you’ll either be building on municipally-owned lands (like an original shore road allowance) or on lands owned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). Purchasing an original shore road allowance is generally considered a smart move. The cost is much cheaper than most shoreline property in Muskoka and it increases the footprint of your cottage property. It’s also best to check in with the MNRF before you build as they might require work permits of their own. If you do need a work permit, you’ll also need to create a site plan or survey detailing the work you plan to undertake. Depending on how you propose to support your boathouse (i.e., cribs or steel piles) there might be additional MNRF permits that come into play.
52
Rebuilding or repairing an existing boathouse is typically a much easier process. In most cases, these boathouses can be grandfathered under “legal non-conforming” clauses. Even if the boathouse no longer meets current municipal standards in terms of size or function, it will likely still pass the test. Once you have all the proper permits in place, you can begin taking a closer look at some of the more detailed plans. How many boat slips will you require and how big do they need to be? What system will you use to get your boats in and out of the water? Does your boathouse require water and septic services, and is your current system up to the additional usage? Remember, you’re likely going to use your boathouse for many years to come, so take into account your current and future needs. Some of the boathouses that populate Muskoka have stood for more than a century. With some good planning and a bit of luck, yours could be right there beside them, 100 years from now. IIS

VOLUNTEERS PRESERVE MUSKOKA’S LANDSCAPE AND WILDLIFE BY: MATT DRISCOLL PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ASPEN VALLEY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Muskoka is home to a wide array of wildlife, with everything from moose and wolves to bald eagles and even rattlesnakes finding a home within the region’s boundaries.
a
long with an abundance of wildlife there are also many people from across Muskoka working at wildlife sanctuaries and reserves to protect, rescue and rehabilitate the area’s vulnerable wildlife.
Spanning some 460 acres on a property just outside the village of Rosseau, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Muskoka’s oldest and largest refuges for sick and injured animals. Started in the early 1970s, Aspen Valley operates with the simple credo: rescue - rehabilitate - release. Aspen Valley’s primary goal is to rehabilitate animals so they can return to their natural habitat but the centre also offers information on how humans and animals can peacefully coexist with one another. That includes fielding queries and offering advice on humane solutions for problems with animals.
The sanctuary has a rotating cast of animal characters in residency at any given time. That includes moose, deer, bear, wolves, beavers, otters and many others. Depending on the type of animal and the extent of their injuries, they could be at Aspen Valley for just a few hours or several months. They also have several other residents who can never return to the wild for various reasons. Their long term guests include Lena the silver fox, Spirit the arctic fox, Jardica the lynx, Ella the moose, Furley the black bear, Monty the bobcat, Tippy the Western coyote, and several more. The sanctuary relies heavily on donations and guests are welcome to tour the grounds by appointment only. Others in the region also work to preserve the ecosystems that local wildlife call home. >

At the sprawling Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve they work towards conscientious forest management. Located on a 10,000 acre property just north of Huntsville, Limberlost is focused on ensuring the sustainability of managing their property for generations to come. The reserve encourages guests to come and visit the property (at no charge), enjoy safe wilderness experiences and view Muskoka’s wild denizens in a natural setting. They also support environmental research programs and institutes, and offer both modern and traditional forest land use options to the local community. Monty the bobcat & Furley the black bear, two long time residents.
There are more than a dozen trails located on the property and each is designed to offer guests a different slice of the Muskoka environment and the animals that live there. Creeks, lakes, caves and forest glades all present the chance to see Muskoka’s wild residents in a natural setting. Just to the east, the Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary also works to rehabilitate sick and injured animals with the end goal of releasing them back into the wild. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the 45-acre refuge was founded in 2008 by Monika Melichar. Melichar has a BSc in zoology and over 25 years of experience rehabilitating orphaned and injured wildlife. Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary works with a wide variety of animals and everything from newborns to injured adults. Volunteers take great pride in their work and treat each animal as if it were the last of its kind. IIS

100 YEARS AND COUNTING: MCDONALD’S GENERAL STORE NOW THE COVE MARINA PHOTOGRAPHY BY: TAYLOR NULLMEYER
Since the late 1800s, generations of families have called Muskoka home. Its natural beauty and unique history continue to captivate residents and visitors alike, enticing them to explore and admire the spectacular views, rugged landscape and crystal-clear waters. Today, Muskoka is a growing hub of cultural, sport and recreational opportunities.

ore than 100 years ago, before cars and traffic jams, urbanites sought the peace and quiet of Muskoka. Travel to the area was made easier when, in 1875, the Muskoka Branch of the Northern Railway of Canada – the first steam railway in Upper Canada – extended to Gravenhurst. Visitors saw promise in the natural beauty of the region and began to invest in Muskoka by purchasing land which, in turn, expanded the tourism industry. The first private cottages began to appear on Lake Joseph, one of the larger and better-known lakes in the district. >

The beautifully updated Cove Marina in the summer.
For two generations, real estate was often exchanged with a handshake or a handwritten note.
In the early 1900s, Thos McDonald, along with his older brother James, headed to Muskoka with the intent of working in the booming logging industry. They ventured north but decided instead to open a small general store in Foot’s Bay, on Lake Joseph. The land turned out to be low-lying swamp so they arranged to transport an abundant supply of cinders, residue from the coalfired steam engines of the day and stockpiled at the nearby MacTier CPR station, and raised the land level by several feet.
Until the 1960s, there were very few licensed realtors servicing the lakes, particularly the island and water-access properties. In the early ’60s, Bernice Willmott, in Beaumaris, serviced much of Lake Muskoka, and Iris Wallace, in Minett, the upper lakes. By the ’70s, Muskoka lakefront properties were changing hands for up to $100,000. Tom McDonald, a third generation McDonald, obtained his Real Estate license in 1973.
The business opened in 1919 with a water taxi service and general store to serve the growing cottage community. A significant factor in the promotion and expansion of the enterprise was introducing ‘city folk’ to the area. The McDonalds thought that introducing owners of vacant lands to potential buyers – who would eventually become marina customers – seemed like a good idea.

SUMMER REGATTAS ALL AGES TO THE WATERFRONT! BY: MATT DRISCOLL PHOTOGRAPHY: BY: KELLY HART
For as long as grand resorts have graced the shores of the Muskoka lakes, the region’s guests and locals have marked the passing of each summer with their own annual tradition - The Regatta. n technical terms, a regatta is simply a series of competitive boat races. While that still applies to the regattas of Muskoka, a regatta here implies much more. The events typically see generations of cottagers and lakeside residents congregating for a day of fun, food, competition and fellowship. Think of it as a waterfront block party with races thrown in for good measure.
i
The oldest of the area’s regattas is the Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) Regatta. The event is the oldest continuously run co-ed regatta in North America, taking place on the Saturday of the Civic Holiday weekend every year. The location alternates each year between Lake Muskoka and Lake Rosseau. You can often find entire families taking part in events that include rowing, paddling and swimming competitions. An annual favorite is the three-generation races, where three members of a family from different generations get together in swimming teams or canoes to compete.
Another popular event among the large crowds that come out to watch the regatta is the tilting event. Once the canoe, skiff and swimming races have ended, the tilting begins. Sixteen teams of a paddler and tilter enter the challenge, where they attempt to stay in their canoes in a sort of on-water jousting competition. The MLA also plays host to more competitive racing events as part of the annual Laser Regatta in August. The South Muskoka Sailing Club co-hosts the event and it draws some of the top sailors in southern Ontario together on Lake Muskoka for a weekend of fun and competition. Nearly as old as the MLA Regatta is the Port Sydney Regatta on the shores of Mary Lake. For 108 years, guests of all ages have assembled on one of the most picturesque beaches in all of Muskoka to enjoy swimming and paddling races. Capped off with a sandcastle building competition and a picnic in the park, the regatta is a huge event on Port Sydney’s annual calendar. >

A more recent addition to the list of local regattas is the Muskoka Poker Run, hosted by Hatchet’s Rowing Centre, which is based out of Port Carling. Not for the faint of heart, this 22km singles-only race is open for both racing shells and open water shells. It starts in Port Carling and follows the top of Lake Muskoka on a loop, finishing back in Port Carling. The Regatta is broken down into age categories ranging from under 19 to 50 and over. Of course, like any good Muskoka Regatta, the day is topped off with a corn roast and drinks. Also taking place on Lake Muskoka, the Bala Regatta is held annually on the Saturday of the August long weekend at the town docks in Bala. The schedule is packed with swimming events in the morning and rowing and paddling in the afternoon. Run by the Bala Aquatic Association, the event includes food and prizes. IIS 60

ACTION-PACKED SUMMER SHAPING UP IN HUNTSVILLE BY: MATT DRISCOLL PHOTOGRAPHY: BY: KELLY HART
Huntsville in the summer is a town transformed. There are festivals and craft shows, public concerts and cruise ships on the local lakes. There’s not a summer day without some fun in and around Huntsville.
f
or those who love the water, there’s no better way to see the scenic Lake of Bays than by climbing aboard the SS Bigwin. For 45 years, the only way to reach the iconic Bigwin Island Resort was aboard the SS Bigwin. The vessel ferried film stars and politicians from around the world but eventually fell into disrepair. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers, the Bigwin is sailing once more and offers regularly scheduled public cruises from June to October departing from the dock in Dorset.
The Artists of the Limberlost Is a tremendously popular event in August, held among the enclave of artists that call the Limberlost Road area home. The rugged landscape of the Canadian Shield has inspired artists in the region for more than a century and the festival offers guests a chance to meet the makers and experience the studios and workshops. You’ll find nature-inspired pottery, jewellery, fiber art, sculpture, paintings in many styles and media, and functional art crafted from local wood.
The Rotary Dockfest and Bathtub Derby always draws a crowd to downtown Huntsville during the July long weekend. The event features a variety of food options, children’s games and entertainment and the main event - a parade of specially decorated bathtubs which make their way down Main Street before hitting the water for one of the most interesting races you’re likely to ever see.
Baysville Walkabout For 31 years, the Baysville Walkabout has taken over the nearby town of Baysville, with more than 100 vendors selling their wares. Set for July 27 this year, guests can expect to see arts, crafts, antiques, woodworking and baking, as well as demonstrations by the Baysville firefighters, live musical entertainment and the popular Lions Club Pancake Breakfast.
Midnight Madness On July 19, Huntsville’s quaint Main Street is closed to cars and open to a Friday evening street festival dubbed Midnight Madness, with family fun, live music, great food and shopkeeper specials. This year the event will feature a Midnight Madness Street Dance, where a DJ will play tunes tunes all night.
Muskoka VegFest After a highly successful inaugural event in 2018, Muskoka VegFest is back on August 10 for another go around at River Mill Park in Huntsville. The festival celebrates a compassionate, healthy, plant-based lifestyle and features vendors, exhibitors, speakers, activities for kids and prizes. From July 26 to 28, check out the 25th Anniversary Elvis Festival, an internationally-recognized event with concerts, vendors and dozens of new and returning Elvis tribute competitors. This year’s anniversary event includes a classic car parade on historic Hurontario Street. Blue suede shoes optional.
The Peak to Shore Music Festival, July 17 to 21, offers more than 30 concerts in 10 different venues throughout Thornbury, Collingwood and Blue Mountain Village. Enjoy a weekend of Mosaic World Music, August 3 to 5, in Blue Mountain Village, including drumming, scavenger hunts and fireworks.
Woodstock: 50 Years Later invites you to “get your hippie on.” Join Meaford’s talented musicians for a night of unabashed nostalgia as they pay tribute to the summer of ’69 with the music of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, CCR and many others. Don’t worry – all the words will come back to you.
Electric Eclectics, by its own admission, “has been freaking out the neighbours since 2006.” This annual three-day music festival of avant-garde, experimental and crossover musicians draws more than 1,000 guests. Held on a private property in Meaford (called the Funny Farm), films, forest dancing and fog machines contribute to the strange ambience. August 2 to 4. BYOB and tent. If hiking isn’t high on your To Do list, start with Canada’s (and possibly the world’s?) only Guitar Trail. Pause to enjoy guitar-playing entertainers as you make your way up and down the Blue Mountain Village and the Village Way hiking trail. Tell yourself it’s not a hike – it’s an al fresco serenade experience. IIS WWW.CHESTNUTPARK.COM | WWW.INVESTINSTYLE.CA

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER AND DEVELOPER MICHAEL CURTIS BY: JENNIFER PERKS PHOTOGRAPHY BY: DARREN BOSCH PHOTOGRAPHY
Michael Curtis was raised adjacent to the temporal and broody backdrop of the Southern Georgian Bay. Inspired by the curiosities of nature and design, Michael established Verge Select, a high design architectural and build firm. erge Select was founded in 2011; it studies the intrinsic relationship between designer and builder, a concept that has been explored over generations, and one that remains true to its practice. You won’t find fast and repetitive architecture in these projects; instead you will see that there is a harmony between designer and craftsmen.
v
There is an ever relevant connection between the maker and designer in the composition of high design buildings, interior spaces, and furniture. The Verge Studios support development and prototyping, and the production of fine millwork, lighting objects, and various other architectural elements including mixed media applications which are collaborations and produced in-studio with an emphasis on form and function. Verge Select believes that by engaging with talented trades their work is innately sustainable due to the quality of craftsmanship and a careful selection of durable natural materials. Michael Curtis feels strongly about designing specifically for client needs, with a strong emphasis on topography. He doesn’t like catalogue designs either, and thinks that taking risks and solving problems is how you create new things. He maintains that subtle details in a project are created by addressing problems and that a project is made unique by creating solutions. The natural environment is an example of endurance and strength. Materials that have been formed through pressure, heat and dramatic environmental events prove their valuability through what could be described as natural selection. Metals patina and timber will grey under the influence of the very environment that created them. Stone shares the palette of its surrounding. The building you create should relate to its topography as it borrows time from the site, and the philosophy of site planning should have an intimate connection to the natural contours of the topography. The inspiration comes from the land and that becomes complementary to the process. > WWW.CHESTNUTPARK.COM | WWW.INVESTINSTYLE.CA

The latest development project by Verge Select is the eminently anticipated Artisan On Lora Bay. Inspired by the rugged topography and natural colourations of Georgian Bay, this design project is elemental inspired living in its essence. Five unique residences are being designed and built without compromise, while celebrating the intrinsic core values of organic architecture. “This project really pushes the boundaries in our area,” says Michael. “Large cantilevered steel volumes extend over the sloped property, while the interior colour pallette is dictated by the environment through multi-storey expansive glass. The project is not influenced by trend but rather nature and we anticipate this concept will prove successful in creating a series of residential properties that endure through time.” See ad on page 64.
Verge is currently working in Meaford, Oakville and Toronto on some residential architecture. They also have two development properties currently in the engineering phase. One in the heart of Clarksburg, Ontario, 50 units on a pear orchard. The other is in the Blue Mountains on 22 acres that is going to be a Scandinavian spa-inspired 40 unit development. IIS 68

SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY FARMERS’ MARKETS: MEET YOUR MAKERS! BY: LESLEY KENNY
Short of growing it yourself, you’ll find the freshest food in Ontario at local farmers’ markets. Long before your first morning coffee and dog walk, farmers across the province load up their trucks with fruits and vegetables, many of which were picked just the night before, then head into nearby towns and cities to set up their stalls. By the time you get there, dozens of vendors – local food producers, artists, musicians and specialty makers – all contribute to the buzz and bustle of a vibrant, community marketplace.
armers’ markets are in full swing across the Southern Georgian Bay area. Baked, pickled, preserved or just-picked, the cornucopia of seasonal delights will reboot your cooking mojo after a long, cold winter (Pro Tip: clean out your fridge before heading to market). As well as the bushels and baskets of crispy fresh produce, there’s fun for the kids, live music, and always a few surprises at a farmers’ market (you can get a shiatsu massage at the Meaford Farmers’ Market; a good idea if you have a long drive home). Artist stalls include jewellery makers, potters, and painters. Treat yourself to a unique, handcrafted item, from skincare to summer dresses, beeswax candles, and carved wooden bowls.
f
Farmers’ markets create a sense of community. Unlike shopping at the local grocery store, where most of us are so tired we just want to get the job done and head home, farmers’ markets are the place to relax and chat, not only with vendors, but with the person standing beside you,
as you sample a variety of olive oils or artisanal cheeses. Share cooking ideas, swap kid-friendly food tips and recommend your favourite vendor. Interested in eating locally, and in season? Farmers’ markets are the perfect place to ask questions and share ideas. Over the years, farmers’ markets have grown to include a wider variety of food and beverages. At some markets you can sample cider made from local apples and wine made from local grapes, all grown in the unique terroir of the Southern Georgian Bay region. There’s also a selection of cured meat, fresh poultry and fish at many markets. Come out and meet the farmers whose families have farmed in the area for more than 100 years, as well as those who are newer to the fields. What exactly constitutes “organic” for an Ontario farm? Ask one of the many local organic farmers (or better, get your kids to ask… while you listen in). Get ideas on how to best store your produce (hint: tomatoes never go in the fridge). >

Collingwood Downtown Farmers’ Market opened for its 14th season this May and will continue, rain or shine, every Saturday morning, 8:30am – 1:00pm, until Thanksgiving (except during the Elvis Festival). This outdoor market, located in the Second and Pine Street municipal lot, features produce grown within 100 miles so it’s a great way to experience the value of farmto-fork. Local chefs will be there, cooking up marketbought ingredients. Thornbury Farmers’ Market is open Sundays, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Find them in the park beside the Town Hall on Highway 26 in Thornbury. Meaford Farmers’ Market is located at the waterfront pavilion in beautiful Meaford Harbour, open Fridays, 3:00pm – 7:00pm. Wasaga Beach Farmers’ Market opens every Tuesday evening, from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at their new location on Mosley Street (The RecPlex). IIS

SUMMER IN GREY BRUCE FRESH FOOD, HARBOUR CONCERTS AND A SCOTTISH FLING BY: LESLEY KENNY
Tasting the artisain pesto at the outdoor market.
It’s a good summer to wander in Grey Bruce – through farmers’ markets, along the water’s edge and through pretty lakeside towns. Wander, shop, wander, eat, wander some more. It’s good for the soul. The Owen Sound Farmers’ Market has been around for more than 150 years, making it one of the oldest in Ontario. Whether you’re grocery shopping for the week or just want to pack a few treats for the day, this year-round Saturday morning market offers everything from fresh, local food, to handcrafted products. Enjoy a cup of locally roasted coffee and freshly baked goodies in the café. Stroll along the water’s edge during Owen Sound’s Harbourfest, on Saturday, July 11, and join in family-friendly activities – like a tug-of-war in the bay. Sample delicious food and a local brew as you listen to live music, including a rain-or-shine performance by Who Made Who, the only full-time touring AC/DC tribute band in Canada. Let there be rock. 72

And if that’s not enough bagpipe-and-drums goosebumps for you, every weeknight (except Saturday), a lone piper serenades the setting sun from atop the Kincardine Lighthouse. The Kincardine Scottish Festival and Highland Games celebrates its 20th year in 2019, with pipe bands, Highland dancing, international music acts and much more.

THE MUSTANG DRIVE IN: PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE PAST BY: ETHAN JONES PHOTOGRAPHY: TAYLOR NULLMEYER
n the geographical centre of Prince Edward County, away from the wineries and boutique hotels, the Mustang Drive-In stands as a tribute to cinema’s past, and to one couple’s whimsical vision. The 63-year-old drive-in first opened in 1956 (as the Picton Drive-In, but renamed later that year) with one projection screen. Today, two screens now tower above the surrounding farmland, an open invitation to passersby to pull in and enjoy a cinematic adventure reminiscent of the post-WWII film industry.
i
When Paul and Nancy Peterson spotted the for-sale sign on the derelict drive-in, in 1988, they decided to buy it and make it a profitable business. Without any experience in the world of film or technology, the couple saw the cool factor and decided this passion project was worth changing their life for. But they recognized that their lack of cinema and business experience would make things difficult in a quickly evolving media landscape. Independent theatres were being phased out at the time, and the few that survived were hailed as unusual success stories. Paul and Nancy rallied their family to help resurrect the drive-in and build an experience worthy of attracting moviegoers from Prince Edward County and beyond. The couple soon realized that carloads of enthusiastic teenagers brought with them problems with drugs and
alcohol so they instituted a no-tolerance policy which ushered in a more family-friendly environment (although waves of disgruntled youth initially steered clear). Today, children can play in the new playground installed directly in front of the silver screen – easy for mom and dad to keep their eye on the movie and the kids. Paul and Nancy remained open to change and have adapted with the times. In 2015 the drive-in went digital, but the experience is still the same for moviegoers. Every weekend, the cars and trucks drive in and wait for Paul’s welcome. As soon as he stands in front of the screen the honking starts, a ritual that dates back to problems in the original days when customers honked in complaint because of imperfect FM transmitter audio. Now a Mustang ritual, the enthusiastic honking is the perfect nod to the past and preamble to the evening’s big-screen entertainment. The Mustang Drive-In has adapted to the twenty first century while retaining the flavour and novelty of the 1950s drive-in experience. You can buy buttered popcorn and hotdogs at the concession, and catch the latest blockbusters on screen. The Mustang Drive-In remains a proud member of Prince Edward County, promising a vintage experience with all the modern trimmings. IIS

Il Verrocchio restaurant at Villa La Massa, just outside Florence, has a stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the River Arno, with a view of the hills of nearby Rufina beyond. Try the hearty Baccala con fagioli vongole e pomodorini (Cod with clams, beans, and tomatoes.)
6. Villa La Massa, Florence, Italy For anyone drawn to Florence’s Renaissance wonders but discouraged by its busy centro storico, here’s an answer: 15 minutes south of the golden city, perched on a meandering bend in the River Arno, sits Villa La Massa. Set in 22 acres (9 ha) of parkland, the Medici villa dates from 1552 and was transformed into a 21-bedroom hotel in 1953, becoming a favorite of Hollywood celebrities of the era including Gregory Peck, Barbara Hutton, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In 1992, David Bowie and Iman held their wedding reception there. Now boasting 41 rooms across four buildings, Villa La Massa has recently opened Casa Colonica—an old farmhouse refurbished into four super-large luxurious suites, each different yet harmoniously configured around a central courtyard. Interior design firm ArchFlorence has imbued each with a calm modern palette of warm grays and pastels, while stone, wood, and wrought iron retain the Tuscan feel. Enormous beds are laid with silks and linens, and furnishing and fittings are handcrafted by local artisans. Produce for the main Il Verrocchio restaurant starts life in the organic kitchen garden and comes alive in summer on the terrace. Changing seasonal menus draw from the traditional Tuscan repertoire. The strong 300-bottle wine list is similarly a concentration of the best from this rich region, the home of Chianti Rùfina—at 1,312 feet (400 m) above sea level, the highest sub-Apennine vineyards—and the Nipozzano vineyards of Tuscany’s Frescobaldi Estates. Paolo Michele, Villa La Massa’s restaurant manager, is a beguiling force of nature—a big man with a welcoming warmth and good humor, the embodiment of la dolce vita. www.villalamassa.com

The estate is a family affair—the hotel is run by the couple’s youngest daughter, Alice, and the spa by the eldest, Mathilde. In charge of the two-Michelin-starred restaurant La Grand’Vigne is Nicolas Masse, whose tasting menu is an ode to nature. Among the Grand Cru vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Bordeaux, Les Sources De Caudalie encompasses a five-star hotel, Vinothérapie Spa, two-Michelin star restaurant La Grand’Vigne, country-inn restaurant La Table du Lavoir, and Rouge, its wine bar and fine-food counter.
