washington university in st. louis, mo

The residential housing complex focuses on the fundamental lifestyle needs of Berlin through both environmental and societal needs. Due to the connection with Japan, the apartments pay homage to the genkan and veranda components of the Japanese home. The unit is organized based upon a series of thresholds, which were aggregated into a complex and placed in a post-war development neighborhood.

culinary institution spring 2024 st. louis, missouri eugeni bach washington university in st. louis, mo

The overarching strategy of the Culinary Institute focuses on catalyzing “the spirit of Soulard.” The surrounding neighborhood was analyzed, and its proportions were applied to the site. A “link” system was designed to create a perceived illusion of many smaller buildings from the exterior, without losing their interior function. Passive systems (brick lattice, canadian wells, green-roofs, rainwater collection) are integrated into the project in response to the St. Louis climate.

The thesis focuses on employing the architectural lens of liminality to question how space can unite divided communities and change people’s hearts. The topic revolves around the Troubles, a poltical and religious conflict, where communities are separated by thirty foot tall walls. This examination calls for an architectural intervention that aims to bring humanity to the Protestant and Catholic religions/communities.

japanese tea house fall 2022

chichu art museum, japan william tate

james madison university, harrisonburg, va

The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a ritualistic action that invites exploration into spirituality and patience. Through a circular momentum of typology, fragmentation, and density, the structure became a passage of encapsulating darkness, tuning light as an instrument of controlled sight. This phenomenological experience enhances the individual’s participation in the practice of cleansing, spiritual respect, tea ceremony, and the art of archery.

As a team project, this bench evolved over several collaborative iterations in order to develop a modular design that could be repeated. Once designed, we produced a jig to properly cut the pieces at a 30 degree angle. This project developed our woodshop/ craftsmanship skills and questioned our understanding of what defines a bench.

montserrat bonvehi-rosich washington university in st. louis, mo

33rd House by Geoffrey Bawa in Colombo, Sri Lanka was analyzed through an iterative diagrammatic process that evolved over the course of approximately six weeks. shienso house, horiguchi sutemi analysis fall 2024

michelle hauk

washington university in st. louis, mo

The Shienso House responds to the current events that impacted Japanese housing architecture of the 1920’s. Horiguchi designed the home through the lens of Bunriha Kenchiku Kai, modern Dutch architectural influence, and non-urban elements of architecture. He used his practice in order to engage with methodologies that examine the vernacular in order to integrate modern construction applications that create a new form of architecture.
