I’m fascinated about an idea that a building is never a building itself—it is also a small piece of puzzles that need to fit in to a bigger picture of a city as a whole.“How can the collaboration between the building and transportation system promotes citizens’ life quality?” should always come first considerations. After the peaks of Taiwan’s urban constructions, there are the unavoidable valleys. Taiwan’s urban design systems have faced numerous serious issues in recent years. The slowing progress of urban renewal, the increasing price rate of living buildings, and the constructor’s greed in maximizing profits are some of the results of the failed urban design system. Such failures have eventually increases the costs for effective buildings (those fit with the urban design) and thus reduce citizen’s satisfactions. Worrying about Taiwan’s current situations, luckily, I found out my interests in urban design and expertise in architecture are the two tools that I can use to make changes.

TAIPEI WAR MAP
THE INVISIBLE WAR
Some friends in Southeast Asia ever said, Taiwanese thought their laziness led to poverty. However, they did not think that wars never happened in this island. I think it’s partly correct. There has never been a miserable war in local Taiwan, but many Taiwanese were killed in battle in other countries, or came back like madmen. Since these stories have never been taken seriously, we think wars have nothing to do with us and never consider the horror of wars. Therefore, a few years ago, the voice of starting a war with the Philippines due to GuangDa Xing No. 28 incident appeared to be so reasonable. There is no fear in war if you don’t know it. However, what is war? I think it’s not a computer games which you can shut down and start over if you don’t want to play, and it’s not a Hollywood movie that will be ended after screaming for two hours as well. It’s hell. We may feel this hell from many stories and many people. Then, criticize, and refuse.
01 ABOUT WAR AND TAIPEI AUTHORITY & FUNCTION
Currently in Taipei, war transforms into different formats in lives, and my graduation project is to change the existence of war and give it a new functional meaning through a method to analyze and reinterpret it. Peace is the mainstream value in the current world, and yet people seem not to be willing to take war seriously, and usually consider it as an “exceptional” situation. Although I believe war still exists in our lives in this era that looks restful, and Taipei city, which faces the war, keeps operating day after day on the map we are familiar with, would conceal a coping mechanism for war to reflect the cycle process of time in a city. War has turned from individuality, sword to group, guns and even huge air attack after years; nowadays, there are even random terrorist attacks as a guerrilla force.

THE INVISIBLE WAR
ABOUT EXIST l ADAPTIVE SYSTEM
With the threat of military force between Taiwan and China, Taiwan is facing an uncertain military force, and yet the cities are lack of a coping strategy for people correspondingly. The aim of this design is to be existed with a new form in Taipei which connects the current contexts of war that would consider the vital functions during a war in the future.
ABOUT EXIST ll CITY ORGANIZATION
Making a comprehensive view of the war history in Taiwan, due to the bombard of World War II, many buildings and creative spaces were built on where the U.S. Army destroyed. The mottled brick walls can still be vaguely seen, and the traces left from the Anti-Communist National Salvation Army era had even been deeply imprinted on this land; the children’s education, bronze statue and assembled salute reflect a type of military thoughts which have been deeply planted and a specific rule to regulate the air raid shelter shall be necessary. The air defense drill that happens in various military spaces of the cities every year have all strongly shown that Taipei has never been left from wars and it presents a classic battle ritual including authoritarian, repairable and military I think wars will undoubtedly come to this land in the future and all these things will be meaningful to the new era. Such “war types” I proposed which exist in modern times holds different levels of meaning. With this understanding, there will be a different construction method in Taipei and such construction method will conceal a system which is corresponding to wars.

I think, a battle/ Quasi-War city should set a method of composition and operation which is different from the current way. I took Taipei as an example to interpret the contemporary four theories which discussed what a city should looks like under the war and rebuild a new war map. Under this city statement, the four systems of evacuation, logistics, medical and defense are included in responding to wars, and are distributed in dots in the city.
EVACUATION SYSTEM l UNDERGROUND RAILWAY
I utilize the existing underground system(MRT) and hidden entrance, design a mega architecture that is use for evacuation in war time. However, its present as a big multi-function building in peace time.
MEDICAL SYSTEM ll MRT STATION EXIT
There are more than 500 MRT entrance that is already exist in Taipei. I transform the volume to make it more efficient of evacuation and survey the surrounding condition.

Huashan Creative Park is the art center located in the most popular area of Taipei. It was formally a winery built in Taipei in 1914 with the ground area exceeding 70,000m²and now attracts a lot of citizens on weekdays. This design considers the arrangement with a huge amount of exhibition, public and office spaces that will allow more crowds gathering at the areas which had been at high density already, and hold coming numerous crowds during the war. The surrounding facilities (elevated highway and buildings) are connecting to the inner base through air-bridges which comprehensively increases the affecting range of the evacuation system.
The design plans for many ve traffic flow lines as well as al tion devices and lift shafts‌e more than double the weight son with the normal regula traffic flow lines can go th directly and connect the unde system to quickly leave centra
ertical and horizontal ll types of transportaetc., which can bear and unit in compariations. All vertical hrough underground erground evacuation al Taipei city.
Condition lll Underground Railway The previous Huashan Creative Park used to be the major strong hold which the Taiwan railway would pass by, and behind the prosperous and bustling scene, a railway relic that is forgotten by people is concealed. This underground railway goes along way to Taipei Main Station, the most crowded place in Taipei. The numerous crowdsduring the war will be connecting to the underground transportation system (MRT) in Taipei through the underground evacuation system of this base to evacuate people from the popular areas of Taipei to outside the city.
MEDICAL SYSTEM l
ROTATING ELEVATION
The public exhibition space in dark colors is embedded in the main builings of the Legislative Yuan and the Control Yuan. The original construction space which is extremely conservative and authoritative has been broken through, that even becomes an exhibition space which welcome citizens to visit. The contest of the exhibition is no longer the point and this operation collapses the reflection of authority towards modern war. The standing canopy frame of the huge hospital for an extension of insufficient space normally while during the war, setting the standing canopy frame on the urban road with huge axle to provide urgent medical facility and rescue.

TRANSFORMING VENDER MACHINE
Besides the setting at special zones, the medical system has also been supplied comprehensively on common vending machine system in Taipei by putting simple medical devices and supplements for serving temporary medical bandage.
LOGISTICS SYSTEM l TRANSPORTATION CENTER
The air force base located in central Taipei has been abandoned and gradually turned to cultural and creative base. Most abandoned defense lands are either totally deserted or being transformed to cultural and creative industry. The corner road of this base used to be the national army cafeteria with logistics system and storage space. I reserve the column and beam structure to design a new tr-ansport and logistics system which connects other small logistics spaces in the city and makes it an example of logistics distribution center. TUNGHAI MALE DORMITORY REPLANNING
URBAN WORKERS SHARING VILLAGE
Taiwan is an island country with the population of 23 million or so. Since 2000, the decreasing birth rate has been getting worse and many schools faced the issue of enrollment decline or even shutdown. Located in the central Taiwan, Tunghai University, the historical university, has also suffered from the impact of decreasing birth rate. Most campus space including classroom, restaurant and dormitory are ready to be released. Among all, the dormitory is the first to bear the impact. The base of this project located in the first male dormitory in Tunghai University and we plan to implement several programs which include handmade workshop, coffee shop as well as cultural and creative shop‌etc. All works will be assigned with a dormitory which establishes a culture creative clusters shared by a student and a worker that will truly implement industry-university collaboration at this area and effectively resolve the large-scale release of accommodation space for the male dormitory.
02
STUDENT & DORMITARY TUNGHAI UNIVERSITY CULTURE
The architecture features of Tunghai University are the traditional Chinese red bricks and inclined roof tiles with Tang imitation style. However, being affectted by the modern architecture, the major structure has been applied with reinforced concrete and the dormitoryarea is divided into the structure pattern of two or three floors which connects each other with the air bridge. This design started with a lot of research and analysis of the change and plan that Tunghai University needed at current stage, finding out the most suitable position to cut-in and implement the new functions. From the promotion of urban scale to human scale, the major architecture of the male dormitory will not be revised at a large scale in this program. The original structure will be remained with proper amendment while implementing the new architecture and the landscape of the male dormitory will be redesigned so the space for the culture creative clusters and students can be kept in balance.

TAICHUNG ART MUSEUM PARKWAY
FOLDED NATURE
While making the urban planning, a green space was designed to belt surround whole Taichung called “Green Park Way” and along the space, the core representative is one called “art park way”, which is with largest ground area and crowds. The current art park way is the normal parkland for people to take a walk and walk dogs. With high-density new dwellings, restaurants and all kinds of cultural and creative shops, such large parkland is not with well and efficient arrangement. This plan takes this as the blueprint and provides a new way to look up the open space in the city with the expectation that the future open spaces can be operated in the same way to create proper open space functions for use.
03 PARKWAY ACTIVITIES FOLDED PLATES DEFINITION
I kept notes for people’s activities in the art park way area for a long time and categorized with conclusion. The parameter design is to put folded plates in the park way at huge scale, and then adjust the various folded plates with different angles based on the requirement nature of diverse areas. There are total 15 types of folded plates at all sizes with the numerous combinations of open space. The large canopy frames are for assembly and exhibition and the small folded plates are for rest or to be used by the underground riches. Besides the large and small spaces for assembly and stage, more than 50% of green space is remained for keeping a balanced state with the folded plates (artificial) space that provides a nice rest place for all Taichung citizens.

Bionics design is the transformation of root concept. I analyzed the octopus slide, studied and interpret its movement logic, trying to find out an advantage belongs to the slide movement of octopus, getting into digital operation and further calculating the 3D state space (the movement of a creature is a tridimensional behavior) with this logic and thoughts. Based on the thought of bionics, such reference of/ operation mechanism which is transformed by learning the creature’s movement will be the most efficient/ the most optimized space. The octopus’ movement is a dynamic and continuous behavior. The study and transformation after notation is even more important instead of simply physical learning. The base is located at Gaomi wetlands in Taichung and it is an intertidal zone of the immense forest. The average wind speed exceeds 6m/s and the gust peak speed is up to 16m/s. With the largest wind po-wer equipment in Taiwan currently, the plan is to set a wind power museum for teaching and visiting purpose. The building is a giant wind power plant, the wind comes into the building itself which speeds up the wind and generates the utmost kinetic energy. The visiting and teaching area will be windless/ low wind area.

04 OCTOPUS EVOLUTION
BIOMIMICRY SYSTEM IN ARCHITECTURE
Octopus is a cephalopod and considered to be the smartest invertebrates during the evolutionary process. It has 8 peduncles with many suckers; sometimes it squirts black ink for escapi-ng. Its nervous system is well developed, composed by central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and sympathetic nervous system which is very sophisticated. During the evolution process, octopus grew arms in order to meet the requirements for climbing and hunting. The arms are behind as the streamline when octopus swims and the three-tier muscle of suckers compress downward to suck objects easily for having negative pressure inside suckers.I kept notes for various states of octopus’ arms while moving in the water and concluded that octopus have two functions with its arms to move forwar and keep balance.

TRANSFORM INTO SPACE FORM FOLLOW EXERCISE SYSTEM
I categorized the octopus’ arms into three categories and five types with two different functions of moving forward and keeping balance for its movement, which are stop/ balance, stop/ move forward, move/ balance, move/ move forward/, scare/ whole unit. The tridimensional space with six different features transformed by different sections obtains various functions and features that I combine these six prototypes according to the form follow functions and design the special space.

ARCHITECTURE FORM FOLLOW WIND SYSTEM
The design of the whole building is transformed by the notation of octopus and what construction space emphases is not the typical evaluation about space quality, but the inner flow efficiency and variation of the wind. The level and partition of the space is also designed based on the air amount and wind speed, which can be divided to four areas: testing (power generation) area, teaching area, exhibition area and dormitory area. The air amount and wind speed are also decreasing by level and the complete building is made of reinforced concrete. With the reference of the non-vertical arc walls of National Taichung Theater by Toyo Ito, building a complete fluid space. This is a space with the theme of wind and the scale as well as space will beyond the common cognition.

Everyone has a dreamland in mind and expects the community life of his/her own can be better. This architecture design for competition aims to improve the lifestyle/ environment/ quality of each community in Taichung and we target Kuang-Min Community, a high-density community with 2,426 residents in 803 households, which is an old community surrounding the famous Fifth Market in Taichung, traditional and yet lively. Although this community is surrounding by the Liu Chuan stream, the residents take the stream as a drain without having specific function or vibe. Liu Chuan, located in Taichung basin, a stream of old Han River which belongs to Wu River system, is one of the four rivers in Taichung center. The river improvement work has been divided into three terms and the overall length of is near 8 km. With the development of Taichung railway station Liu Chung becomes a river that all citizens remember and yet without having any resonate. The community improvement program integrates the three terms of river improvement works that the Taichung City Government l for Liu Chuna, with the attemption to connect the daily life of Kuang-Min Community with the river and develop this community to one-of-a-kind river-friendly community in Taichung. The original aging community structure will also be improved for attracting young people back with the new style.

05 COMMUNITY COMPETITION LIU CHUNG STREAM IMPROVEMENT
This is an BOT project which the Taichung City Government works with local construction firm. The goal is to improve the nearly abandoned Liu Chung, which residents consider as a “drain for a long time. Besides improving the deserted waterfront which was abandoned, this program also attempts to connect the surrounding residents and commercial centers to the concave section by Liu Chung to create a big river-friendly living area. The length of the base exceeds 2 km and the design is planned according to the width of the river. The wilder section is designed for the river-friendly zone so people can play with water, and the narrow section will be cultivated with a huge amount of local plants as well as aquatic plants to cope with ecological rehabilitation and establish the environment for human-ecology coexistence.
In addition to the waterfront, the temporary container house building is also applied to the street markets. Without connecting to any building itself, the activity can be changed at any time to increase the variety and keep the Liu Chuang healthy. The original vendors will be moved to upper embankment to remain the cleanness and tranquility of the concave section of the river.
Deck connect through the Liu Chuang, providingthe residents keep a quiet place to excercise and relax in noisy city

TINTAGEL CASTLE COMPETITION
THE WHISPER BRIDGE
Plans for a footbridge soaring high above the waves between the Cornish mainland and the island fortress of Tintagel have caused a storm of protest. The site’s custodians, English Heritage, say the bridge will help more visitors reach the island and understand its history better. It is to be created out of two cantilevers that reach across the windswept void from either side but do not quite meet in the middle. In recent months English Heritage has been criticised for turning Tintagel into a “fairytale theme park focusing more on its legendary associations with King Arthur than its real, fascinating history.

TINTAGEL CASTLE INTRODUCTION
TONKIN LIU
Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. Today the remains of the 13th century settlement can be seen on both the mainland and jagged headland or island jutting into the sea, but Tintagel’s divided landscapes were once united by a narrow strip of land. As part of a £4m English Heritage project, the new bridge at Tintagel Castle will follow the path of the original land bridge and help visitors to better understand the site’s history, improve access to the island, and help to protect and conserve the landscape

LIGHT ELEGANT MISTERIOUS
In recent months English Heritage has been criticised for turning Tintagel into a “fairytale theme park focusing more on its legendary associations with King Arthur than its real, fascinating history. Our concept is to gently implement the bridge to this legendary place. We used a lot of metal rods and thin films to form tension. Looking from the lateral side, the whole bridge is very light, just like a spider. With the light shed upon at night, the touch of the sea wind is like a whisper. The difficulty of this design is to work with Arup (a worldwide famous construction company) with back and forth discussion to design a structure system for the new type of bridge.

MULTI FUNCTION ACTIVITY CENTER ARCHITECTURE PROJECT
YEAR: 2013 TYPE: OFFICE / THEATRE / GALLERY / ARCHITECTURE LOCATION : BANQIAO / TAIWAN ADVISER: GUO WEN LIANG
The base located in a lively intersection in Banqiao District, New Taipei City, the east side with intensive business activities is the new Banqiao District while the western side is the declined old Banqiao District. The base happens to be located in between the new and old juncture which is a key area of a city. I tried to make the juncture blurred and get the crowd flow with different types of people gather to my base again. The first floor was excavated to an underground plaza that provided a clear stopover point on one hand and resolved the noisy environment on the other hand. The misplacement of volume creates a lot of virtual space that some was released as semi-open space. With the misplacement of volume, a huge amount of penetrability was made which connected the vision and activity texture on both sides of the city and prevented them from being intercepted by buildings.

With the half volume of Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, the International Film Festival held in National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts this year was set with different feelings. This pavilion expected the different light and shadow effects which are different than before. The temporary construction composed by 3mm painting steel plates possess a unique inner space and visitors can enjoy the effect brought from that specific angle at various sides. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in the back can been seen through the extremely thin steel plates at certain specific angles. In the pavilion, some various curved surfaces built by the intensive steel plates can be used for rest places for visitors and the inner space is also enough to accommodate chairs with nice shielding purposes. Visitors can clearly feel various shadows during a day projected by the sun, as if the building were made with sundial.

SUN RAIN ROOMS INTERIOR AND GARDEN
YEAR: 2014 TYPE: OFFICE / HOUSE / PARAMETRIC / ARCHITECTURE LOCATION : LONDON / ENGLAND ADVISER: TONKIN MIKE / ANNA LIU
The Sun Rain Room is a two-storey extension and restoration of a Grade-II Listed Georgian townhouse. The extension reframes the rear of the building by amplifying the characteristics found within its fabric. Designed and constructed by Tonkin Liu in collaboration with local craftspeople, it serves as both a studio for the practice and a home for the partners’ family. I was responsible for this project when I worked at Tonkin Liu,The perimeter walls of the rear courtyard support a plywood roof, curved in plan and section to allow maximum light into a patio garden. Rainwater gathered at the top of the townhouse falls through a pipe, following the roof’s curving leading edge to a spout over a long rainwater harvesting tank. The tank floods the patio at the push of a button, transforming it into a reflecting pool. The roof’s thin 110mm structural shell is an insulated stressed-skin, joined by round coffered skylights that echo the wave pattern of raindrops landing in the pool. It is a good place to be on a bad day.

YEAR: 2016 TYPE: EXHIBITION LOCATION : TAICHUNG / TAIWAN DATE: TONKIN MIKE / ANNA LIU
Shen Ji New Village is an old army dormitory which is abandoned. We bring out the imagery of “home” to plan for the exhibition space. Since the original “living” function of the dormitory is gone with only the space left, we then make the design work with the unit of household and set different themes for the dormitory. These “living” spaces have also changed the way we worked in it and the concept of spatial cognition. We started to call the places we organized “home” and imagined the exhibition shell as where we really live. In these empty houses, the imagery of home is not only re-appeared with more home taste. These old houses were completely transformed into the Youth Entrepreneurs Park after the exhibition. Prior to that, we displayed an open house during the exhibition and welcomed everyone to enter the space to not only enjoy the presenttion of the architecture work, but also experience the original moderate look of these houses while walking through. To imagine how predecessors lived here and reappear the lives of military kindred village by walking through the exhibition and getting into the houses. GRADUATION EXHIBITION
