CHIA-MIN WANG My interest in spatial design began during my undergraduate studies in theater, film and media. The overlay of cultural, international, visual, textural, as well as performance challenges has opened to a global sense of design. I believes the combination of these experiences strengthen his passion for architecture.

A FLIGHT OF FANTASY

FIRSTWORKS NEW ART CENTER & CREATIVE CULTURE REVIVAL Providence,RI

“Culture, and by extension the creative industry, is a key element in urban redevelopment.” Paul Rutten As Rutten notes, this project embraces and illustrates this idea through the adaptive reuse of an existing space to design a new art center for Firstworks which is an energetic arts organization in Providence. The Degree Project will provide a practical, organizational workspace, and a cultural intersection that encourages mass participation in artistic activities as expressed by the mission of FirstWorks, also re-evaluates how the design can define this organization’s identity which serves as a center of hospitality, vitality and creativity with all of us. The art center will contains a performing art space, visual art space, galleries, and multifunctional public plaza to support Firstworks various cultural events.

FOGARTY BUILDING Location: 111 Fountain Street, Providence, RI Owner: The Procaccianti Group Inc Architect Builder : TPG Construction Zoning: Downtown District D1-100 LUC: Commerical II >100.000 Acres: 0.52 Structure Type: OFFICE BUILDING - LOW-RISE Year Built: 1968 The Fogarty Building, built in 1968 of mostly reinforced concrete, is an example of Brutalism architecture, designed by Castellucci, Galli & Planka, Rhode Island architects. As a distinct style, Brutalism grew out of the very real needs of a post-World War / Utopian era, where the demand for social services (housing, financial support, health care services) out-weighed the pleasure of slowly refined design. That design concept was applied to this rigid, massive concrete structure in downtown Providence, which was built to serve as the Rhode Island State Welfare Office.

STUDIO PROJECT AT RISD

DANCING WITH RIBBON YMCA NEW TICKET BOOTH Cambridge, MA

The design studio explores how the interior architecture of performance venues-working in concert with building architecture and urban design-is an essential force in defining memorable sequence, identity and form. Through rigorous explorations of tectonics, program, materials and technology, the design will define the sequence of interventions that will express my interests in, and approach to, an existing community in Cambridge, MA. YMCA Theater has no arresting signage or entrance to draw people’s attention. Also, the ramp with an inconvenient access doesn’t meet the ADA’s requirement. The design concept focuses on creating an attractive ticket booth which turns into a new eye-catching landmark in the Cambridge neighborhood. Simultaneously, the design is to remove the existing glass windows to make a combination between Ticket Booth and existing ramp. The ramp would become a dramatic transition from outside to inside.

STUDIO PROJECT AT RISD

The inspiration is from Cambridge City Hall’s handrail and light fixtures. To design the ticket booth, the idea would catch the characteristic of Art Nouveau and transform into the “floating” and “free form” space. The floating shape has the dynamic movement that could attract people’s view and lead them to notice the theatre.

STUDIO PROJECT AT RISD

DANCING WITH RIBBON YMCA NEW MEDIA LAB Cambridge, MA

Following the previous project : YMCA ticket booth, the New YMCA Media Lab/Archive addition is to develop the “floating” and “free form” space. The floating shape could attract people’s view and lead them to notice the new building. The concept comes from the movement of Colored ribbon(streamer) which is always used in performance. The ribbon could become the one kind of extension of performer’s body. The dynamic movement connects the relationship between performer and stage (space). To create a movement space as same as a play, music concert and dancing and provide a new activated landscape in Cambridge, MA. People could walk through the fluent space. The freeform shape provides one kind of dramatic tension and atmosphere to people that is the experience from outside in. the new intervention focuses on the circulation and redesigns the new accesses for public and private use. To consider about the backstage lacking functionality, the design will create a freight elevator and extend a new prop path for stage crew and performers use.

MONTEE KARP RESIDENCE Pacific Palisades, CA

PROGRAM Single Family Residence SIZE 2,200 sq ft TATUS S Completed 2015 DISTINCTIONS AIA LA Residential Design Award Interior Design Best of Year Award Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Award CA Home+Design Award Shortlisted, WAF Award The 2200 sq. ft. residence is located on a severe hillside site in Malibu overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The project is an extensive remodel of an existing post-and-beam home in need of a structural, programmatic and environmental upgrade. The residence is re-envisioned for the 21st century. The existing roof geometry is accentuated creating a language of faceted surfaces. The articulated volume of the building’s front facade extends indoors to define the interior spaces, resulting in a dematerialization of the roof, wall and floor planes. A forced perspective is created, framing the extraordinary views out to the Santa Monica Bay. The minimal, gallery-like living space is designed to accommodate the client’s extensive collection of contemporary art. Display niches, lighting and the configuration of the spaces are planned to enhance the experience of viewing the art. The stair has cantilevering steel treads, each with a custom laser-cut pattern. Light from the skylight above filters through the perforated stair to project an ever-changing texture of shadow and light, enlivening the walls and floor. A grand entry door made of a stainless steel tube frame marks the threshold into the relatively small house. The 10’ high door makes use of a hydraulic pivot and a concealed magnetic locking device. HOLLYWOOD HILLS HOUSE Los Angeles, CA PROGRAM Single Family Residence SIZE 5,000 sq ft TATUS S Completed 2018 DISTINCTIONS American Architecture Award Cover, Interior Design Magazine Published, Dezeen The residence is located within a heavily wooded site in the Hollywood Hills. The secluded lot is located in the eclectic neighborhood of Nichols Canyon, minutes from the Hollywood Strip. The project falls under the jurisdiction of the Mullholland Scenic Parkway Specific Plan and as such the building has minimal impact on the site.

2.

A layering of building strategies is used to create the 3,500 square foot residence inspired by the strata of the mountainous surroundings. The base is a monolithic form rendered in an exposed, reinforced, board-formed concrete. The main living level opens to the gardens and to the views. The façade of glass allows for optimal transparency and is protected with a layer of screens that allow for sun protection and privacy. A faceted volume comprises the top level and contains the private functions of the home. The floating mass is shaped by the constraints of the site and punctuated by series of openings that frame specific views.

GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI COMPETITION 2014 Helsinki, Finland LOCATION Helsinki, Finland PROGRAM Museum of Arts SIZE 210,500 sq ft STATUS Competition The design of the new Guggenheim for Helsinki is a study in counterpoints: between the more traditional values of Finland and the more progressive values of Helsinki, between materials and between technologies. Contrast is also explored through the three distinct architectural components that make up the project, The Grand Hall (cluster of galleries), The Spine Gallery and The Black Box. Key design elements of openness and porosity permeate the complex referencing Nordic ideals. The design acts not as a barrier, but as a filter. Visual access to, from and through the site is always maintained. The museum is an integral part of the waterfront, the scale, proportion and placement of the building components is in keeping with the neighboring buildings. The Northern portion of the site is a public plaza, an inviting social space that draws people from the city center preserving the relationship with the surrounding area. The new Guggenheim functions as an urban connector, extending the city limits to the water’s edge and uniting the historic center with the park Tähtitornin vuori. The design maintains access to the harbor and allows 1/3 of the site to be retained by the public as open greenspace.

THE BEDFORD HOTEL Brooklyn, NY, USA

STATS 650,000 sf (5 Floors / 100 Key) PROGRAM Lobby, Lounge, Outdoor patio, Café, Restaurant Rooftop Bar and Lounge STATUS Under Construction

Bedford Hotel is soon to be located in Crown Heights Brooklyn. The site embraces historical architecture landmark, landscape and cultural institutes. The building has a simple volume which wraps around a central intimated patio on the ground with a sequence of arches. The intention is to open the site for the community to experience a subtle landscape. To impose a feel of extended exterior atmosphere throughout all ground floor interiors. Hotel lobby allows the freedom by letting the façade arches be a feature at lounge and concierge reception. Adding a winter garden-like structure slightly separates from the façade so that a skylight can allow diffused light in. Lobby floor mimic the exterior landscape by use of concrete floors with circular carpet inserts and full high black glass panels for background that resemble the mosslike vegetation mixed with a lily pond. Both shape and materiality are reminiscent of an old-world monument, inspiring a sense of belonging and protected space.

Transitioning to the floors above, the arches are not only structure but also as accent millwork to passage zone or arboring functional spaces. At guestrooms the arches indicate a moment of passage or function according to the room typology. DENIZEN BUSHWICK RESIDENCE Brooklyn, NY, USA CLIENT Denizen SIZE 1,000,000 SF STATUS Completion in 2019 A massive project located on the site of the former Rheingold Brewery and spanning two city blocks in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, Denizen is an all-inclusive rental development with an array of publicly accessible communal spaces, and interconnected courtyards, all of which create a superimposed layout of woven streets in a typical old town core. Sensitive to the impact that a massive two-block development such as this one could have on the neighborhood, the architectural vision focused on uniting public and private spaces to create opportunities for exploration by residents, guests, and locals. Denizen aims to become an integral part of the neighborhood by creating a highly porous architecture where the community can find a platform for activity and interconnection. With the implementation of meandering, interconnected courtyards, a bisecting green promenade, and communal activities, Denizen will be a veritable city within the city. It amplifies the idea of sustainability to reach beyond positive environmental implications; here sustainability means a prosperous relationship between the building, its residents, and the existing neighborhood.

HISTORY

Boswijck (little Dutch town in the woods) 1828.

104

The Rheingold Brewery opened in 1883, and by 1965 it was the 8th largest brewery in the U.S., but it closed in 1976.

The design intention is to treat the architectural volume as an art piece. It utilizes a freestyle / floating partition wall and mezzanine to redefine gallery spaces and circulation. The renovation is not only effectively rearranging the existing work space, storage and meeting room, but it also creates a more airy, flexible exhibition space and leisure social area for visitors. The gallery looks like it contains a large sculpture which attracts curiosity from passersby.

Southwest Waterfront, Washington DC, USA CLIENT Hoffman-Madison Waterfron SIZE 385000 SF STATUS Under Construction The city of Washington DC has an extraordinary contrasting relationship between the city grids and nature edges. The city has characterized by L’Enfant’s urban Plan of Washington DC, the diagonals superimposed Thomas Jefferson’s historical orthogonal grids surrounded by the hard rock of the Piedmont Plateau and the Potomac River. The Wharf: Parcel 8 consists of 255 residences and a hotel, both with ground-floor retail located on the south of Potomac riverbank. For the architecture approach, the U-shape building provide stacking up terraces in residential wing and rotate window bay orientation in Hotel wing to maximize panoramic river view. In residential amenities such as lobby, GYM and clubhouse, the design intent is to associate this relevancy in the historical urban grid and bounding nature. To develop two different dichotomies between hard (structure) versus soft (nature) materials those are to interpret the relationship between urban structure and natural environment in Washington DC.

THE DIARY OF LIGHT “If you look for a meaning, you’ll miss everything that happens.” “I felt all the time that for the film to be a success the texture of the scenery and the landscapes must fill me with definite memories and poetic associations” ― Andrei Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time

As Andrei Tarkovsky’s quotes, I expect my images are like a movie, a theatre or the diary of light which is seeking not only to capture a beautiful moment, also it is to interpret the imagination of space, memory, emotion, movement, abstract and urban texture.

CHIA-MIN WANG My enthusiasm for spatial design began during my undergraduate studies in theater, film, and media. As many productions or performance challenges, I believe the combination of these experiences not only has opened to me a global sense of design also strengthened my passion for architecture and design.
