ARTIST STATEMENT

The aesthetic of Chia-Ning’s style is feminine, ethereal and quirky. She is good at combine the feminine feeling into defferent material and pattern.

Her collections are more focus on conveying her inner mind and philosophy. To show the concept by using different texture.

COLLECTION 01

HUMAN AND WOMEN

What does it mean to be true to yourself, if the self that you are is always shifting?

-Søren Kierkegaard

CONCEPT PROPOSALS

What is fashion truly meanig to me? It is difficult for me to answer this question after a yeat of MA journey. Fashion to me, is not merely about clothing anymore, it can contains many aspects as much as we want, or relating to social issues.

For sure, I want to be an ambitious designer that can bring positive and revolutionary effect to the society by my design as other successful designers. But how can I do these things that I am not even know well about myself?

Understanding and knowing myself is the first anf foremost thing to me in this stage, and this is how the concept came out, this collection can be regarded as the journey of myself. As a human and woman living in the world, what is my existing value?

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

EXISTENTIALISM

FASHION

In one of the idea of existentialism, there is no rule of human being, human can be whatever they want. Existentialism focuses on finding the value of human exist. It is quite similar as the feeling that fashion to me. There is no definition of how garments should be look like.

I want to jump out of the conventional shape of garments and focus on the three-dimentional effect. I hope to achieve the goal that the collection can be eccentric and elegant at the same time.

Three crucial elements that affected the collection’s silhouette are sculptures, ceramics, and ruins.

Two major elements in the design detail are ruffles and transparent fabrics.

The inspirational artists are Louise Bourgeois and Vilhelm Hammershøi.

Three important fashion designers Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons), Martin Margiela (Maison Margiela), and Simone Rocha.

In most of Louise Bourgeois’s works, she often use twist to convey her concept. Her works expressed themes of lonliness and conflict, frustration and vulnerability.

Her sculptures revolved around themes of unconscious sexual desire and the body.

Vilhelm Hammershoi was the greatest of the Danish fin de siècle Symbolist painters. He specialised in haunting, ghostlyinterior scenes.

His paintings are so gloriously full of its own emptiness. Everything in the painting looks ethereal and light, it seems like they will disappear suddenly.

This is the atmosphere I want to create in my collection.

The reason I inspired by the ruins and broken sculptures are because human to me, is the fragile creature, we easily get hurt, the body and the heart, even the life is easily end.

It can not be denied that there are many happiness and joy in our life being a human, but, we also suffer a lot from the emotions.

In this collection, I want to convey the nothiness of being a human.

The silhouette prototypes I practised.

As I mentioned before, this collection has many design of ruffles and layers, therefore, to emphasise the effect and the sense of feminine at the same time, the material I choose should be really light and soft.

FABRIC PROPOSALS I want to create the atmosphere just as Vilhelm Hammershoi’s painting, it seems like everything shrouded in mist, people can hardly see clearly. Therefore, most of the fabrics I selected are light and thin, when someone wearing the garment, their skin can be seen, but not that clear. It is the sense of ambiguity.

The colour I decided are similar, the major tone is white, but due to the material and textile technique, they show different type of white. The reason I chose white is because the feeling I received from human. The fragile and vulnerable feeling.

DESIGN BOARD

With the inspiration from Louise Bourgeois’s twisted artworks, I defined that both human and clothing do not have the rule to follow, we can do whatever we want.

Therefore, I design those kinds of shapes to describe the human’s changing mind and the outside body when they facing the socialization.
