PORTFOLIO

[ preface ]

There are couple snapshots of me happened in different times and spaces in my life that ultimately serve as deeper motivations to push my projects forward. Some are narratives, some are thoughts. I have included all of them in my portfolio under the title “journal. Although some of the snapshots seem unrelated in the first glance, they somehow managed to find each other’s connections along the way. And it finally dawned on me that how all those unrelated moments came together and influence me not only as a person but as a designer.

Wailing Wall, Jerusalem, 2015

[ journal ] - 2012, Cairo I found myself the only person walking in the street because everyone else is praying either at home or in the mosque. There was just me, and the sound of prayers from the loudspeakers. - 2013, Jerusalem I saw kids playing soccer together happily in the streets. They were Arabs and Jewish kids. - 2013, Taiwan Sitting on my sofa, enjoying Saturday morning Sun. Saw the news on TV, the president of Egypt was overthrown, 638 protesters were dead. - 2017, New York I was assigned to design a society project that aims to resolve conflicts and promote peace through shared experience, the prayers from the loudspeaker in Cairo, the kids in Jerusalem’s street, the Sun on that Saturday morning and the tragic news on TV, all those little moments came up quietly but so powerfully that I couldn’t ignore them during my design process.

type: theatre society big idea: Eliminating individual differences through theatre experience.

theory

Every person in this world is unique, and can be distinguished generally by one’s gender, color, race, personality, character, occupation, social economics status, culture, and etc. However, people also share the same life experiences, emotions, and the love for stories. Especially when people are in the theater, immersing themselves in the same story performing on stage. Although each one of the audience has a different background, they tend to focus on the same performance on stage, and it is from that moment they become identical individuals.

inspiration

If most of the conflicts result from the lack of understanding differences between each other, would there be less conflicts if the differences between individuals be eliminated? And if by experiencing the same thing can possibly eliminate all or part of our differences, how can a theatre society achieve that goal in terms of interior architecture? concept description

MOMA PS1, New York, 2017

[ journal ] - 2012, Cairo “I’m Mohsen.” I introduced myself to people in the village. They seemed confused. “Do you have a real name?” one of them asked. 2016, New York: First time in New York City, every nationality and ethnicity, every look and color is welcomed in this city. - 2016, New York “My name is Chiang Cheng Wei; you can call me Will, or Wei,” introducing myself to the class on the first day of school. “I’ll call you Wei, because that’s your real name, isn’t it?” the professor said. - 2017, New York I didn’t strive that hard to blend in other cultures anymore. I have been introducing myself as “Wei” not as “Will.” And I started to accept my accent. I did so not because in a negative way, but because I just started to understand what it really means to be a “foreigner” and proudly recognize my culture and my identity as Taiwanese.

type: Taiwanese beef noodle soup restaurant big idea: 6 elements merge together to form something new.

theory

Beef noodle soup is a Chinese and Taiwanese noodle soup made of stewed or red braised beef, beef broth, vegetables and Chinese noodles.

6 is a Taiwanese-owned New York based restaurant specializes in beef noodle soup. Located in Chelsea Market, the site has been full of energy of hustle and bustle. The name of the restaurant is inspired by the 6 main elements that complete the dish, which are beef, noodle, soup, green onion, bowl, and chopsticks.

inspiration

When having beef noodle soup, one will experience the richness of ingredients including beef, noodle, vegetable, green onion, white carrot, and soup.

Although each element has its own characteristics, when they are contained in one bowl, they tend to influence each other’s flavor, shape, and color. This is also similar to the experience of having a beef noodle soup since all ingredients are merged together that one will taste all things in one bite. When dining in 6, the customers will not only be exposed to different materials, textures and geometric shapes, but experience the interior of 6 as a whole at once. concept

Petra, Jordan, 2011

[ journal ] When I travel, I like to take photos, write journals, or sketch when I see something interesting in the streets. I did them mainly because I like to, but I believe there’s a deeper meaning to it. Maybe they are the most effective ways to keep records and prove that I was once exist in this world. Amazingly and easily, those moments, are captured and preserved, although not forever, last longer than the memories. And when someday I’d like to look back, there’s actually something to review. Luis Buñuel, a Spanish filmmaker, once put it this way: “Life without memory is no life at all.” Maybe that’s what travel is all about, to create timeless moments.

“Long-exposure photography” or “time-exposure photography” is a photographic technique, which is used to capture the movements of moving objects, just like how we capture moments by taking photos, sketch, and write journals when we travel. Upscale luggage retailer elleggage tries to capture movements of traffic on the roads, people on the streets, and air in the sky, in an elegant way using architectural language in its newly designed Manhattan flagship. concept

[ journal ] I remembered when I was a kid, it was easy to make me laugh, as if everything in this world is interesting. And then I grew up, trying to adapt to this world, obey rules, study hard. As I grew older, I started to question myself: what is this all about? Since when everything comes with a purpose, stats, scores, plans, money? Why did I forget how to simply have fun?

[ postface ] I had 4 different names. “Wales” was the first English name given by my Mother. Then I changed it to “Will” because it had a more similar pronunciation to my Chinese name “Wei.” Well, also because Will Smith was one of my favorite actors. When I studied Arabic in college, my Saudi professor named me “Mohsen.” “What is your real name?” Sometimes I was asked this question. Do I have a real name? Do I need to have a real name? I still don’t know the answer. But after staying in New York for 2 years. I started to realize that the real name issue is actually an issue of self-identification. I guess what they’re really asking me is: “What is your story?” If you asked me now, I’d say: “This is it, you just read it.”
