Sattle

sand & settle down

Nowadays, smartphones and the faster pace of the society make people impatient and distracted when waiting for and having a meal. How can we not be phubbers and refocus on the interaction between us and our partners when having meals together? Sattle is the pepper grinder which can help us feel calm and settle down when expecting and having a meal, by watching pepper powder slowly floating down as sand falling down in an hourglass!

OBSERVATION

I observed that people usually feel impatient and fretful when waiting for a meal for too long; they even turn to phubbing on their own.

How to make dining experience better? How to calm peoples’ mood? At the same time, how to improve the interaction between each other?

INSPIRATION I like the rainy day. Why? Because rain can smooth my mood. The sound of rain can even give a sense of tranquility to the quiet of my heart. When watching raindrops slowly accumulate under eaves, my mind seems to follow them to settle down.

Using Mind Map, I found out the keywords, then, I use Sudoku method to converge and associate more keywords which are more relative to each other. The 2 most important keywords are HOURGLASS and GRIND.

IDEATION

I started to develop different forms of the pepper grinder. During the process, from upper left corner to lower right corner, I found out that maybe I could use millstone mortar as one element for the exterior appearance. However, at last, I decided to make it simple and focus on the form of the hourglass.

SPECIFICATION

Using 1:1 scale to develop the form, I simultaneously define the accurate scale of each detail and capture the real sense of the design. On the other hand, I conducted the feasibility study on grindcore and then used powerful winding spring, just like how it works in pull back cars and tape measures, to achieve my design. 34

SCENARIO

Once you and your friends go to a restaurant and make your orders.

Without something interesting, you guys just phubbling when waiting for the meal.

But now you have Sattle! This exquisite product can increase your interaction with your friend.

You can look pepper powder slowly flowing down, feel time passing.

Whirl the twister clockwise and store the energy for grinding pepper.

Let go, then the twister will rotate counterclockwise, linking to grindcore, to grind pepper.

After grinding, just whirl the upper part and twister counterclockwise to separate.

At last, use the lower part to pour out the pepper powder.

HOW TO USE

PROTOTYPE

I use a little hourglass, 2 plastic cans, and a plastic cap to make the prototype. Because of the rosy color of the hourglass, I use rose salt to increase the sense of reality. Also, I simulate the visual experience of the actual operation. DEMO VIDEO: https://youtu.be/FXUmwgljmNE

Back U

auxiliary toilet seat

Have you ever feel in pain when going down stairs after doing intensive exercise? You may have the same feeling of the elders, especially with those with weaker lower limbs. Also, changing postures, like using the toilet, can be a serious suffering for you! Seeing these struggles, I design Back U, an auxiliary toilet seat which uses a hydraulic device and an electric motor to assist users in sitting down and standing up when using the toilet, without exerting the strength of their lower limbs. This product was shortlisted for final judging of Red Dot Design Award 2017 design concept.

OBSERVATION

Based on the previous research on the aging society and health care issues in the social design project, I found out that along with the increasing age, in Taiwan, on average elders spend more than 40% of their time in the sitting position each day. For elders over 65 years old, the chance of falling is 28-35%. For elders over 70 years old, the chance is 32-42%.

How to prevent falling? To extend the time of sitting? Or, to use aids to help the weaker muscles?

INSPIRATION After making the Mind Map associated with disability, I used Dementia Elder as the subject to do brainstorming and KJ method thinking. Then I observed that the difficult of squatting and using the toilet by themselves not only happens to dementia elders but also usually happens to ordinary elders whose muscle strength is weakening. Through this perspective, there seems to be an entry point to design an auxiliary device for using the toilet!

I made a Persona to more deeply simulate and understand the demand and pain of elders.

BERNARD AGE: 65 LOCATION: countryside OCCUPATION: retired worker FAMILY: widower, living alone HOBBIES: jogging, swimming

TIMELINE of USING THE TOILET

walk to the restroom

slowly sit down

Because of the work when he was young, he needed to carry stuff moving up and down. Bernard got some injuries at his waists and knees. As he gets older, the physical fitness and strength decline. Thus, with the injured knee, he feels suffering when walking on the stairs, standing up, and sitting down, and needs an auxiliary device to assist his motions.

stoop & take off pants

turn round to take tissue

excrete

throw into trash can

lean foward & clean

wear pants

get up

leave restroom

push flush button

KEY GOALS: Reduce the burden on knee and waist, Decrease extensive motion to prevent falling

IDEATION All the toilet seats on the market are make to be lifted backward. How about making it to be lifted forward? Just like a boxing machine? Or, how about adding a forward-lifted device on general toilet seats?

OVERVIEW

The slight slope of the upper part gives the user a better position of defecation.

When a user wants to sit down, he can trigger the hydraulic device to slowly decline to the proper position by leaning his waist and butt onto the upright part.

After finishing using the toilet, the electric motors would lift the user up, without any pain in his knee and thigh muscle.

For people who don’t need the device, they can push down the upright part, then pull up the whole seat to urinate.

ADDITIONAL EXPLORATION

2016 In Taiwan, the proportion of elders whose age is over 65 had reached 9.85%, and Taiwan became Aging Society. Furthermore, experts estimate that the elderly proportion will reach 14.36% in 2018 and Taiwan will become Aged Society. In addition, based on current trend, estimation shows that the elderly proportion will reach 20.63% to make Taiwan a Super-aged Society. Thus, the elder must be a user group of Social Design.

How to let elders have better physical conditions and life quality?

RESEARCH

By research, after 25 years old, the muscle strength of human would start to decline 4% per 10 years. After 50 years old, the rate can speed up to 10% per 10 years.

How to let elders slow down the decline rate by doing low-impact exercise, to prevent falling? Elliptical Training Machine would be the best option for elders because the operating mechanism is identical with human stepping, and it will not bring a huge impact on the joint when exercising the muscle of legs and butt.

How to make Elliptical Training Machine more friendly for elders to use?

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT After determining the relative position of each important component of elliptical training machine, I used “circle as the center of association to develop the form. The smooth and round look can let elders feel close and friendly, blending the design into the domestic life instead of the cold form of an equipment in gyms. At last, I referred to the dimension of each elliptical training machine and the human body, to make a movable prototype and a joint-movable human model with 1:20 scale. 8.75 (175/20) cm 1.1 2.2

Crafts

different materials

I have a strong passion for handcraft and love to make things by myself. In this part, there are some handcraft works made of different materials. Although I majored in Mechanical Engineering, instead of in the design-related field, I still used the mechanical practice factory to make some interesting stuff. These practical experience also become the prolific foundation for me to pursue Industrial Design.
