Via Fibonacci, Bedroom Renovation P+I Arquitectos (Francisco Pereira and Chiara Iaia)

Measuring site project, Design Development, Contructive Drawings September 2018 - Ongoing Rome

The aim of this intervention is to increase the habitable area of a small bedroom which has a considerable ceiling height. Four wooden pillars support the mezzanine above the entrance door, creating two levels. Between the first two pillars is drawn a simple library made of wooden boards, while the other ones

disappear behind an wardrobe that pretends to be part of the wooden structure. The stairs follow the wardrobe design having also storage space below them. On the ground floor is created an open space for leisure and study, leaving the mezzanine space for a comfortable night of sleep.

Forte Braschi, Bathroom Renovation P+I Arquitectos (Francisco Pereira and Chiara Iaia)

Measuring site project, Preliminary Project, Contructive Drawings, Coordination of the Executive Phase September 2018 - ongoing Rome

The design of the bathroom intends to improve the conditions of a small space defined by a trapezoidal plan. The shower founds itself inside an hollow already existing, while the lavatory is placed on the largest wall of the bathroom, leaving the central space free for the toilet and bidet. A new wall is designed to hide the toilet infrastructure as well as a little cabinet for storage, reducing the bathroom area. In order to counteract this loss, two mirrors were placed perpendicular to each other in front of the cabinet and behind the lavatory, duplicating visually

the dimension of the space. A simple ( 10x20cm ) tile covers pavement and walls till the door’s height. The small format adapts easily to the trapezoidal form of the bathroom, in order to cover each corner of the space with the same standard material. Three different colors were chosen to distinguish the two main parts of the space. The shower is covered with dark green tiles and the bathroom space is designed by a blue-green pavement and white walls.

Selected Projects

MARP - Museu do Automรณvel e do Rally de Portugual | Desafios Urbanos 2017 Fafe, Portugal in collaboration with: Francisco Pereira, Pedro Xavier Silva, Nuno Silva January-March 2018 Porto

The main objective of the design was to propose the creation of a new space next to the Praça das Comunidades de Fafe, with different possibilities of use. We intend to create a new square to socialize by dining areas, protected from the chaotic surroundings of the project site. Having this in mind, the concept of the building is divided into two different parts.

The shape of the proposal comes from the design of the interior exhibition space. Introducing the ellipse as the main theme, we present a dynamic path along the exhibited cars. A non-linear perspective space is created, making the visitors experience always a surprise nearby each car. On the other hand, the ellipse allows also to increase the size of the central patio.

The first one is to create a large opaque volume with two floors that host the exhibition around a central patio.

We have created a building that answers both to the site scale, as well as the necessities of the type of museum space demanded.

The second one is the gardened podium where the building lays. Inside it are placed every service areas, entrance and restaurants that live exclusively towards the central patio.

The solid and the opaque volume points out the new attractive space near Praça das Comunidades, inviting the visitor to enter inside the Rally’s world of Fafe.

Pinocchio Children’s Library | YAC 2017 Collodi, Italy September-December 2017 in collaboration with Francisco Pereira Porto

Two river margins with two different purposes. One welcomes those who arrive by car, while the other receives those who come from Piazza S.Bartolomeo. Facing Collodi’s Church and continuing the presence of the old Paper Factory, the new Library building stands above a green platform. This platform is crossed by a pathway that connects both margins, and provides access to the patios that confine the library spaces below the green platform. As a result, the building offers Collodi’s village a new public space system well connected to it, whereas the library exterior spaces are completely aside from urban circulation, providing a safe and confined playground environment for children. The Library’s different uses were divided into two main groups, the former corresponding to the space below and the latter to the space above the green platform. The first group ( Reception / Exhibition / Auditorium / Cafe ) is organised around three patios and defines a new promenade by the riverside, allowing access to the Pinocchio’s Park. Around the central patio, people are welcomed at the reception. There, while waiting for a show at the auditorium to begin, they may see exterior performances/exhibitions or enjoy a quiet meal at the cafe with the riverside view. Those who arrive from the village center may enter the building by passing through one of the two exhibition patios that are essencial to provide natural light to those spaces. The fourth patio concerns staff facilities and therefore is hidden from the public. The second group of uses relates to the library spaces and their multiple purposes. ( Library / Media-Space /

Workshop ). These areas are placed above the ground in order to capture the adequate natural day light and to benefit from better views towards Collodi’s landscape. Furthermore, the old Paper factory already has the most convenient space to provide a suitable workshop area for children, due to its large dimensions (41m-7.5m) and fenestrations. Therefore, the rest of the library’s design follows its example. Three naves (40mx8m) are placed right next to each other, defined by four volumes: two larger in the middle (40mx4m) and two thinner (40mx2m) in the limits. These are service volumes, hosting the vertical circulation, book rooms and wc’s, spaces that are completely opaque in contrast with the transparency of the naves towards the landscape, only protected by a brise soleil. The main idea is to create a labyrinthic route throughout the entire library space with no need for a common vertical circulation, offering children the possibility to explore and discover totally different spaces while they live the exciting experiences that the Library itself houses. This idea is achieved by placing one auditorium in each nave, connecting each floor from the underground (reception) till the upper floor. However, it is also possible to access a specific library room without having to walk through every auditorium. Book rooms (interior) and balconies (exterior) permit the passage between mezzanines. In spite of this labyrinthic space choice, simplicity and order is the main concern throughout the entire design. The experience of each and every space starts and ends at the heart of the project, the reception and the central patio, in order to create a friendly space for children to explore without getting lost.

Porto. Progetto di un isolato nel quartiere di SĂŁo Victor. Thesis Project, Prof. Orazio Carpenzano, Tutor Alessandro Brunelli 2016 Roma

The project site is part of Porto city centre, inside Fontainhas neighborhood, an urban context characterized by social housing to the North and by the view towards the Douro river to the South. The site consists in 4000mq of urban void with 12m slope, surrounded by three streets and social housing. The need to restructure this void is evident in order to develop a forgotten part of the city. After studying the local legislation and the urban necessities of the site, we have decided that two housing buildings and a small public equipment like a theatre should be designed.

By doing this, the dwellings designed follow the corridor type typology in order to guarantee the entrance from each street. Due to the existing 12m slope, the design was divided into three different levels. On the highest one, we can find a volume with the structural frame visible, big glasses walls open to the central garden. Instead, the gallery to access to the flats, is pointed toward the street, articulated by volumes covered by green ceramic tile panels.

The project aim is to create a new semi public space that enjoys the views towards the river and at the same time can be quiet and calm, far from the urban environment.

From the second level a massive volume born from the ground and go through all the lot up to Rua das Fontainhas, placing itself near the two old building existing in the project area. This flat block is more opaque than the other one, and is marked by horizontal bands, composed by windows, loggias and green ceramic tile panels.

The theatre is placed at the south angle of the site emphasizing the new public presence towards the street while the housing buildings develop inside the slope creating a semipublic courtyard above the theatre roof.

So the long entrace corridor start from Rua das Fontainhas up to the building on Rua da Senhora das Dores, giving access to several types of flat: two-room flats, three-room flats and four-room flats in the biggest block, duplex flats in the other one.

The project site is where the XVIII Mediterranean Games were held, located by the outskirts of Tarragona (Spain). Therefore, several sports equipment have been build there such as swimming pool facilities, one velodrome and one football field. The project consists on designing a Sports Hall nearby. This facility main goal is to provide a new sports field measuring 50x30m with a minimum capacity for 5000 spectators. Besides the field, it was also requested to design several public and service spaces such as dressing rooms, gyms and warm-up rooms, technical area and all the support spaces as the entrance hall, offices, cafes, toilets and finally one V.I.P. gallery.

In order to hide the enormous scale of the facility, the construction is designed almost entirely underground. Two glass facades indicate both Public and VIP entrances after walking through an inclined square on each side of the building. Three Prefab concrete stands separate each entrance from the central sports field, designed as singular sculptural volumes that emphasize the spatial continuity of the roof’s wooden beam structure. The service spaces are located between the foundations of the ceilings structure lightened by courtyards.

Laboratorios FAUP

Extension of FAUP facilities Prof.ra Maria da Graรงa Correia Project IV (FAUP) 2013-2014

The design for the extension of Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP) facilities was divided into two main volumes. The first one is a large horizontal concrete structure that draws the limit between the highway exitand the school’s public space, hosting the large spaces requested such as entrance hall, multi-purpose rooms, model laboratory, cafeteria and PhD rooms. The second one is a nine-floor classroom tower placed right next to first one, pointing out the new school’s entrance, when at the same time recalls the vertical towers designed by Álvaro Siza.

Between these two is designed the auditorium, that hides underground providing as well the link between the two different structures, thanks to its entrance hall and an interior patio. This one, helped by a glass wall at the ground floor, illuminates the underground part of the project. Concrete and glass walls create the immage of the extension of the FAUP. They follow a horizontal direction in the biggest volume, instead a vertical direction in the tower. The huges windows let enter inside the buildings a lot of transparency and brightness.
