LIGHTING DESIGN
[ Lighting Design Master Thesis ]
Throughout history, the illumination of the urban environment has been approached solely as an engineering subject. In this context, the current urban lighting requirements are defined based on motorized traffic, prioritizing drivers’ visual needs. As a consequence, excessive lighting levels are now found in the city environments with negative impacts on the human as well as the environmental sphere. By synthesizing scientific knowledge on human visual system, this project introduces arguments to address the lack of human factors and to question the adequacy of the standard requirements for human nighttime vision. With a focus on pedestrians, the aim of this work is to address dark adaptation as a new human factor in the design of urban lighting, by providing knowledge on the human eye’s ability to perform in dim conditions and how this is compromised excessive use of lighting. Important findings from this topic identify three essential criteria to be employed as lighting requirements. Specifically, a methodology is developed to approach the design of pedestrian lighting in urban areas presenting big variations in lighting levels, from brightly lit to dark environments. With the steps “Measure, Test and Translate” the proposed framework provides designers with guidelines to aid the process of dark adaptation for pedestrians transiting from bright to dark urban areas,

How can a lighting design in the public spaces at Enghave Brygge create a specific identity that will enhance the qualities of the area and support the overview, flow and wayfinding? Starting with this research question, the challenge is to analyze, design and test to create an interactive lighting solution that meet specific social challenges and potetials of public outdoor spaces in the under development area of Enghave Brygge.

Local streets The area of Enghave Brygge is mainly residential, with the main road that interconnects the site with Sluseholmen to the south and Vasbygade road to the north. This represents the “inner spine” of the area and is suggested to be lit with a neutral colour temperature. The other local streets and walking lanes can be lit with a warmer colour temperature emphasizing intimacy and proximity to the residential buildings.
“Living by the water” is the theme emphasized by the architectural companies. The masterplan project provides easy and different types of access to the water to create possibility for sports activities.

The extensive vision for the identity of Enghave Brygge is shaped upon the theme of “water motion”, as this being the most important element characterizing the site. Beside providing navigation according to street hierarchy and an intmate atmosphere alongside the promenade, lighting will evoke the element of water in two main areas: bridges and public park.

This project investigates a study room at Aalborg University Copenhagen, its current lighting layout and develops a concept to improve the students’ well-being and productivity. The approach has been to evaluate lighting parameters, such as distribution and colour temperature, as a medium to explore the possibilities of bringing daylight qualities indoor.

Light Modulation was a workshop aimed at combining prototyping techniques and use of materials for the realization of a fixture functioning as light modulator. The idea behind this small project was to experiement with volumes and material properties in order to obtain special light effect as a result of the simple interaction between emitted light from the source and its fixture structure. A sculpture-like object is obtained by gluing 83 triangles collected from a laser cut of one 3mm transparent acrylic panel. Lighting source: LED strip CCT 5500 K, Cool white.

DESIGN RESEARCH

MATERIC - SENSORY STRENGHTENING OF TEXTILE SURFACES This experimental research focuses on sensory perceptive aspects of surfaces and communicative qualities of materials. Aiming at studying different sensory responses involving the senses, a series of physical samples are created with common-use materials to compose sensorial paths to be experienced, The samples display different texture features, such as contrast between smooth and rough, soft and tough, as well as transparent and opaque. According to these, samples are categorized as tactile scales engaging with the touch and optical scales engaging with the eyesight. Sensory variations can be designed by combining materials with diverse and opposite features in such a way that enhaces volumes and surfaces’ narratives. Particularly, with the aim of contextualizing the research into a production process, the final products focus on the tactile-sensory dimension of woven fabrics obtained after a reaction process involving textile fibers’ proprieties: felting. The textile surfaces produced at @Lanificio Leo (Calabria, Italy) are designed according to dimensional variations, different material yarn compositions, weaves and densities, which react differently to the felting process according to the way they bond with water. This relationship is what the project bases its name from.

Work extracted from Product Design Lab” experimentations (Industrial Design Bachelor Degree). The workshop was focusing on studying light diffusion as a result of its interaction with shape, colors and material surfaces. The project aim was to understand the potential of combining light with different “medium” in order to explore its various configurations, each one creating a certain ambience. Specifically for these samples, different patterned elements were designed to experiment and understand the way light interacts with geometries, colours and opacity.
LIGHTFORMS
The pattern is generated from the repetition of a three blade helix-shaped unit. A 20x15 cm tile is obtain by connecting the units according to a radial pattern. This object is afterwards realized with 3D printing technique, using organic eco-sustainable resin.

This visual art project explores the possibilities of projection mapping, within the context of architecture, as a spatial transformation tool. Projection mapping is used as a technique to reveal the form of objects as display surfaces for projecting light based content. This project is based on the idea of spatial augmented reality technology that can be used to add a digital layer of information to the environment. In this context, projections are used as controllable sources of light in order to project content that evolves over time. The objective is to create architectural focal points and improve the experience of a space for its users.
VAPORWAVE
Metaphysical surfaces was an installation conceived for Ved Siden Af, a Copenhagen music venue. The concept follows the vision of opening the access to a multisensory dimension of the space, where colours, light, sound and people mingle together. The idea of using a reflective surface to visualise visual contents is experimented on different material foils, to explore their qualities and understand the possibilities of application. These surfaces are modelled with the aim of creating a sort of “metaphysical mirrow” to reveal fragmented reflections of reality. Video projectios with highly saturated colours were used along with 2 DMX lights and one laser illuminating dynamicly the entire surface. The sources generated refracted light effects on the surrounding walls, creating interesting visual patters.

Volumatrix is a personal research which was carried out in a special chamber within the University Campus of the Aalborg University in Copenhagen. The anachoic room is an absorber chamber which is used by the Sound Music Computing master students to record their works in a environment designed to completely absorb reflection of sound waves The idea of this experimental research is to explore different three-dimensional configuration and spatial perception according to the use of coloured light sources and their positioning. These together create and change the perception of the space, according to different colour shades and shadow patterns which extend, compress, model the space in different and interesting ways.
