HEALTH Give thanks for good health by donating blood this holiday season The American Red Cross is encouraging people to share their good health this holiday season by donating blood for patients in need. Mike Healey’s son was born prematurely, weighing 3 pounds, and immediately needed blood. “I gave blood the next day and have done it 56 times since then,” he said. Though Healey’s son spent his rst 49 days of life in the neonatal intensive care unit, he has thrived and is now a healthy, 10-year-old little league baseball player. “I will never forget whoever sel essly gave blood for my son.” A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and travel. However, patients don’t get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. The Red. Cross is encouraging members of the public to make an appointment to give blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood. org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
LAW & POLITICS EEOC LAUNCHES ONLINE SERVICES FOR INQUIRIES, APPOINTMENTS AND DISCRIMINATION CHARGES The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has launched an EEOC Public Portal to provide online access to individuals inquiring about discrimination. “This secure online system makes the EEOC and an individual’s charge information available wherever and whenever it is most convenient for that individual,” said EEOC Acting Chair Victoria A. Lipnic. “It’s a giant leap forward for the EEOC in providing online services.” The EEOC Public Portal allows individuals to submit online initial inquiries and requests for intake interviews with the agency. Initial inquiries and intake interviews are typically the first steps for individuals seeking to file a charge of discrimination with EEOC. In fiscal year 2017, the EEOC responded to over 550,000 calls to the toll-free number and more than 140,600 inquiries in field offices, reflecting the significant public demand for EEOC’s services.

Mariano’s Bronzeville Celebrates One Year Anniversary Continued from Page 1 By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Mariano’s Bronzeville, located at 3857 S Martin Luther King Dr., recently celebrated its one-year anniversary with residents and partnering vendors throughout the city of Chicago. The celebration included a dozen vendors like Margie’s, Earth O’ Sweet Peanut Butter, Mama Jo’s [Pasta Sauce] and Bee Love. Amanda Puck, director of Strategic Brand Development at Mariano’s Bronzeville said, “This was a great way to celebrate our anniversary with local partners and vendors and really make it fun for customers.” She added, “For us, we’re really about helping our community whether it’s giving back to fight hunger or helping local vendors.” Wilbur S. Reneau, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Margie’s said, his 15-year nationally-known business has a unique flavor that no one currently sells. “We have strawberry-banana syrup and banana syrup, which is unheard of,” Reneau said. “We have all natural gluten-free, marinade salad dressings with mango garlic and pineapple passion fruit.” He said it was great to share his Margie’s product with community residents and Reneau shared that young entrepreneurs should find their passion and be determined to not let anyone tell them what they can or can’t do in life. Jesus Judah, manager of Earth O’ Sweet Peanut
Butter, said the local business supports Illinois and Wisconsin communities by making natural, high-quality peanuts with no chemicals. “Our biggest target is to empower and bring employment to the youth,” Judah said. “As a partner with Mariano’s and a local brand, we wanted to come and support the efforts within community.” Jonathan Jenkins, manager of Mama Jo’s [Pasta Sauce] is also a Food Broker who works with food manufactures on getting their product in food stores and meeting stores’ qualifications said, “You have to have a product that the store feels will sell and that people will want,” Jenkins said, “You want your product to taste good and have quality benefits to it. If it’s a healthy product and it tastes great along with great packaging and you have the right numbers for producing your product, then you have the ingredients to present to the stores.” He noted that the grocery store market is very competitive because more than 1,000 products are reviewed yearly. “It’s very competitive so you must have all of your details, research and funding in order,” Jenkins said. “But most of it takes a lot of hard work and if you have a good product then you have a chance to make it.” For more information, you can visit https://www. marianos.com/.

Odyssey Media’s IN THE BLACK Tour Offers Free Admission To Houston Small Business Owners And Aspiring Entrepreneurs Post Hurricane Harvey
Over 150 women will attend the IN THE BLACK Houston event on Nov. 10 for free, thanks to the generosity of The Coca-Cola Company’s 5by20 program, developed to enable the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs worldwide by 2020. “We know that women are the pillars of our communities. We strongly believe in investing in women to foster economic growth and sustainable development,” said Lori George Billingsley, Vice President of Community Connections at The Coca-Cola Company. “We are proud to support women entrepreneurs by partnering with Odyssey Media’s In The Black Tour, a program that empowers women to build businesses, support their families and shape their communities.” In a Sept. 2, Business Insider article, Houston business owners expressed that their small businesses, which make up 99% of Houston’s companies, face a long road of restoration after Hurricane Harvey. According to the article, many lack large cash revenues and are suffering from having to shut down temporarily or permanently due to extensive damages. Linda Spradley Dunn, CEO and Founder of Odyssey Media is quoted saying, “Harvey has been especially difficult for Black and Latina small business owners and it has discouraged many who wanted to start a business. Our sisters need us, and we’ll be there! We will customize the program and focus on where women can get immediate help, as well as how other Odyssey Women around the world can pitch in.”
Senator calls on President to release costs & consequences of starting a war against North Korea [WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator and combat Veteran Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) has called on President Trump to provide the American people with an analysis of how many American servicemembers and innocent civilians would lose their lives if we went to war with North Korea. There are currently 29,000 American troops stationed in South Korea and another 50,000 stationed in the region—and tens of millions of innocent civilians also live within striking distance of North Korean weapons—all of whom could be at risk if conflict breaks out. “As the drumbeat of war accelerates, the American people must understand the potential consequences of the United States engaging in armed conflict against [North Korea],” Duckworth wrote. “This entails understanding how many families will watch their children deploy overseas and never return, how long the conflict will last, how much combat operations will cost and the continuing resources that will be required over the coming decades to properly care for Veterans who return home with service-related injuries. As a United States Senator who flew missions in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom, I recall the lack of full debate and the absence of tough conversations during the run up to the Iraq War. As long as I am serving in the United States Senate, I will do
everything in my power to prevent a repeat of the past rush to war.” Duckworth joined Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and five of their colleagues in introducing legislation that would prevent President Trump from launching a preemptive strike against North Korea without authorization from Congress unless there is an imminent threat or action is necessary to defend American citizens or our allies. “To be clear, I am not a dove, but I am also not a reckless hawk, with scant appreciation for what the men and women in uniform, and their families, sacrifice every single day on behalf of our great nation,” Duckworth added. “I am not opposed to war if it is necessary to protect the United States of America, but our troops and our citizens deserve to first know the cost.” Then-White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon speculated in August that 10 million people—including many Americans—living in Seoul, South Korea, could die within 30 minutes if hostilities broke out and a recent Congressional Research Service report estimated 300,000 people could die in the first few days of hostilities. Duckworth’s letter and the Murphy legislation she cosponsored follow an escalating series of tweets from President Trump threatening the North Korean regime.
Small Business Opportunities Discussed By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Congressman Bobby L. Rush (D-IL 1st District) along with Robert Steiner, District Director of Small Business Administration (SBA) and Miriam L. Brewer, Senior Director of Diversity for International Franchise Association (IFA) hosted a recent Franchise Business Opportunity Fair and discussed franchise opportunities for Black entrepreneurs. According to IFA, there are over 1,000 franchises in Rush’s District that support 24,000 jobs, accumulate $584 million in payroll and spur $2 billion in economic activity. During the fair, Rush highlighted that a recent report showed by 2020, there will be a 64 percent national increase in business growth, but a major decline amongst Black owned businesses. “This is startling for our nation,” Rush said, adding, a significant decline like that amongst Black-owned business should be declared a “national emergency.” “The statistic is just a forecast, not a conclusion,” Rush added. “You are the conclusion. You can change the outcome and the prediction.” Robert Steiner, District Director of the Small Business Administration (SBA) in Illinois, which is an independent agency that supports small businesses and entrepreneurs, said at least 50 percent of small businesses fail within the first two years, but SBA helps facilitate many successful franchises.
Steiner said, “it’s not like you have to have a million dollars to buy a franchise,” but you must have SBA’s three C’s which are access to Capital, Small Business Counseling and Government Contracting. He continued to explain that when starting a franchise, you must have a business plan, know what industry is best for you and understand the market. Steiner said SBA supports a network of resource partners who provide one-on-one small business counseling and advising to entrepreneurs and small business owners at no-cost. “They will walk you through a process that helps you go from ideation of starting a franchise to narrowing your field to the best fit and [location],” Steiner said. “So, you may come in and say, “This is what I’m going to do,’ and the next time you come in, they will ask you, ‘Okay, did you make the step?’” During the fair, Steiner highlighted that SBA also works with several lending partners like the Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives which helps facilitate access to capital within local communities. “There is an entire range of financing such as micro-loans up to $50,000 with the Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives and $250,000 loans for small businesses, funded by local non-profit institutions and guaranteed by SBA,” Steiner said. Third Annual Green Beauty Barometer Shows High Demand for All-Natural Options
Kari Gran, an eco-luxe skin care company, recently announced the results of its third annual Green Beauty Barometer. The results once again indicate a growing demand for natural beauty products among American women, with more than three in five (61%) reading ingredient labels on beauty products prior to purchase (compared to 55% last year). In addition, 37% of women will buy more natural products* in the next two years than they currently do, slightly up from 2016 results (35%). Visit karigran.com/greenbeauty for full survey results. The third annual Green Beauty Barometer survey was commissioned by Kari Gran and conducted online by Harris Poll on the company’s behalf in September 2017. The survey was among more than 1,000 U.S. women aged 18 and up. It measured attitudes and purchase behaviors across several beauty product categories, including: skin care; hair care; makeup; sunscreen; fragrance and nail care. Key Findings Sulfates, Parabens Most Avoided Chemicals: For the third year running, sulfates is the number one ingredient women will avoid when purchasing beauty products, with 31% claiming if this was listed on a product label, it would prevent them from purchasing that beauty product. This is followed by: parabens (23%); synthetic fragrance (18%); oxybenzone (14%); PEG compounds (12%); mineral oil (11%); nanoparticles (11%) and retinyl palmitate (10%). More Spending Across All Product Categories: Across all beauty categories,* the total percentage of women who will only purchase or intend to purchase more natural products in the next two years, compared to what they currently do, scored in the double digits. Skin care led the pack with 26% of women saying they will increase the amount of natural skin care products they purchase and 12% saying they will only purchase natural skin products in the next two years. This is followed by hair care (21% and 10%), then makeup (21% and 9%), sunscreen (18% and 8%), nail care (15% and 6%) and fragrance (13% and 6%). When it comes to age, Millennial women (aged 18-34) are more likely than older women (ages 35+) to plan to only purchase or increase their natural beauty product purchases (65% vs. 37%). Geographically, 54% of women living in the West intend to
only purchase or purchase more natural beauty products in the next two years than they currently do, while 46% in the South, 38% in the Midwest and 40% in the Northeast say the same. Green Skin Care, Hair Care and Makeup in Highest Demand: Women again felt the strongest about their skin care purchases being green, as compared to other beauty product categories.* Among women who use products in the listed categories, three in five (60%) say choosing all-natural skin care products is important to them, followed by hair care at 53%, and makeup and sunscreen at 50% each. Rounding out the categories is fragrance at 44% and nail care at 40%, with each up 4 percentage points from last year. Women 35-54 Increasingly Embracing Green Beauty: While 75% of Millennial women said purchasing green beauty products is important to them, this year’s data show women in their mid-thirties to mid-fifties are increasingly placing importance on purchasing all-natural beauty products. Sixty-nine percent of women aged 35-44 say purchasing all-natural beauty products is important to them, an increase of 10 percentage points from 2016. Women 45-54 came in at 68%, an 11 percentage point increase over last year. Western U.S. Women Are Seeing Green: Women living in the Western U.S. are creating a demand for green beauty, with 73% in the West stating that purchasing all-natural beauty products is important to them. More than three in five women in the South and Northeast agree (67% and 63%, respectively), while just 56% of women in the Midwest say the same. Retailers Haven’t Closed Demand Gap: While most women seem to be satisfied by the selection of natural beauty products available at retailers—including their related online sites, where they shop for each category of beauty products—there is still work to be done to meet the demand. This year, 16% of women are unsatisfied by the all-natural beauty selection available at specialty drugstores and grocery stores. This dissatisfaction is closely followed by department stores (15%), mass market drugstores and grocery stores (12%), and specialty cosmetic stores (10%). “As a company, we’ve seen the growth in demand for green beauty products firsthand,” said Lisa Strain, co-founder of Kari Gran, a line of skin
care, makeup and sunscreen products that draw on plant and essential oils as the essence of a good skin care regime. “In the last three years alone, our sales are up 235%, we’ve expanded into major beauty retailers and overseas, and we’ll continue to innovate as we

As your blood sugar spikes, you’ll feel a short burst of energy followed by a midmorning crash that leaves you exhausted and hungry. You need to kick the quick fix and instead choose a better breakfast. When you eat a wholesome meal to start your day, you give your body and mind the fuel it needs all morning long. Whether at home or on-the-go, eating well during the most important meal of the day is easier than many people think. Here are a few tips to keep you satisfied: Plenty of protein: Protein helps you feel full longer so you’re less likely to need a mid-morning pick-me-up. Plus, protein is an important building block for the body, helping support bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Try adding protein-packed foods to your breakfast, such as meat, beans, nut butters and eggs. Necessary nutrients: According to Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, eggs are a classic breakfast food, but there’s one easy change that can supercharge any meal. “Swapping out ordinary eggs for Eggland’s Best eggs, gets you six times more vitamin D, 10 times more vitamin E, double the omega-3s and more than double the vitamin B12,” says Blatner. “Plus, Eggland’s Best eggs also contain 25 percent less saturated fat than ordinary eggs - that’s why they are the only eggs I serve my family and recommend to my clients.” Fresh produce: Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to breakfast not only gives you extra vitamins and minerals, it also helps you keep meals fresh and interesting. Add lettuce and sliced peppers to your egg sandwich. Top your oatmeal with chopped peaches or favorite seasonal fruit.
Become a mix-master by blending smoothies in endless combinations to satisfy taste buds. Whole grains: Like protein, whole grains help you to feel satisfied longer, so you don’t feel the need to eat until lunchtime. In general, most people need to eat about 6-8 ounces of grains daily, according to the USDA. Half of that should be whole grains. To boost your breakfast, choose
whole-grain cereals, stuff a whole-grain tortilla with scrambled eggs, or top whole-grain toast with nut butters. Want some more breakfast inspiration? Spice Up Your Wardrobe for Holiday Festivities
Is your wardrobe ready for this holiday season’s festivities?
(NewsUSA) - Sure, the little black dress is a staple of holiday parties. It can be dressed up or down, and it is the epitome of understated elegance. But it’s not the only option for fashionable women. “This is the time of year that women can put some fun in their wardrobe,” says Elliot Staples, whose fashion designs are featured at The Limited stores and thelimited.com. “It’s as much a celebration of decorating yourself as well as celebrating the holidays.”
It’s also the time of year that many women need an outfit to play double duty by going from the office to a party. Here’s the fashion forecast for the upcoming holiday season. * Fancy That. Focus on black and white trousers and pieces worn in sharp contrast to one another. A soft blouse tones down what could be a too-severe look. This style works well for a dinner party, work event, or an upscale occasion. * Going Baroque. Wear jewel tones in luscious greens and cobalt blues and
jet black. This trend reflects a sexier, more youthful look for going out -- be it with the girls, a party, or a more casual event. This style is as easy as a special top with black jeans. Gold is a key accent color in printing, buttons, and accessories. To round out the look, pair with a clutch adorned with fabric or touches of sequins. * Skyes the Limit. Sweaters and yarns take on a slightly rustic and darker mood and color this season. Pair them with simple skinny jeans, furry accents, and fringe inspired boho necklaces.

6 tips to help keep your drive distraction-free Nail your next game day spread with these tips
6 healthy reasons to enjoy a slice of sweet cherry pie this holiday season (BPT) - The holidays are just around the corner, and for most of us that means time to indulge in some favorite treats. Fortunately, healthy doesn’t have to mean less delicious! If you’re looking for a good-for-you holiday dessert that can please even the most critical sweet tooth, a naturally sweet cherry pie could be just the ticket. You can have your pie and eat it too! Cherries provide a whole host of health benefits, so pull out the cherries you put up, dried or froze this summer and feel good about enjoying that slice of cherry pie. Here are six reasons why: * Natural, healthy sweetness: Dark sweet or Rainier cherries both offer pie lovers the perfect dose of juicy sweetness without excess sugar. Cherries boast a lower glycemic index than almost any other fruit, which means they release glucose slowly and evenly, helping you maintain a steady blood sugar level, leaving you feeling full longer and maybe even helping you maintain a healthy weight. * Anti-inflammatory superpowers: Does your arthritis flair up when the temperature drops? Research shows that cherries contain anthocyanins, which shut down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation in the exact same way that ibuprofen does. So, enjoying cherries daily may help reduce your need for anti-inflammatories. * Better sleep in every bite: Keeping your energy up throughout the busy holiday season can be a challenge, but cherries can help you sleep better and feel more rested. Studies show that cherries are a natural source of melatonin, which helps control your body’s internal clock and regulate your sleep patterns. Try eating cherries about an hour before bedtime to help stabilize your sleep cycle. * Reduced chance of gout attacks: More than 8.3 million Americans suffer from gout, a painful form of arthritis commonly associated with elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. A study by researchers at the University of California at Davis found that people who ate sweet cherries showed reduced levels of uric acid, while a study by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine showed that people who ate cherries, in conjunction with their prescribed medicine, had a 35 to 75 percent lower chance of experiencing a gout attack. * Covert cancer-fighting agents: A study by the USDA’s Western Human Nutrition Research Center suggests that cherries possess cancer-fighting properties as well. Cherries contain ellagic acid, which appears to be a potent inhibitor to the growth of cancer cells. * Boosted fiber intake: It’s no secret that Americans don’t eat enough fiber - in fact, many of us are fiber deficient, falling short of the 25-35 grams per day recommended by the USDA Dietary Guidelines.
Eating cherries can help you reach the current dietary recommendation of two cups of fruit daily and can contribute to healthy weight maintenance, diabetes prevention and improved cardiovascular health. While fresh cherries are available only in the summer months, frozen or preserved cherries are an excellent alternative that allow you to enjoy the health benefits of cherries year-round. Northwest Cherry Growers recommend the following easy-to-make sweet cherry pie recipe to celebrate the season: Northwest Sweet Cherry Pie Ingredients 2 pie crusts, prepared 2 tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons cherry juice, reserved from pitting (fresh) or from rinsing/rehydrating (preserved) 7 cups (pitted) sweet cherries 3/4 - 1 cup coconut sugar 1 tablespoon almond extract or bourbon-vanilla bean infusion Directions 1. Using a fork, whisk together the cherry water and cornstarch in a small bowl, then set aside. 2. Stem and pit the cherries, if not already done. 3. Fill pie dish with cherries and blend the remaining volume (about 2 cups or 1/4 the total volume) into a puree. Pour the remaining whole cherries into a mixing bowl and return to the refrigerator (if using frozen cherries). 4. Using a heavy-bottomed pan, gently heat the puree and sugar over low heat until the volume has reduced by 1/3 to 1/2. Constantly stir across the bottom to prevent burning. 5. Once reduced, remove from the heat and stir in the cornstarch slurry until the mix regains translucency. Gently and briefly reheat if needed. Stir in the extract and let the mixture cool to room temperature. 6. Pour the cooled mixture over the whole cherries, gently stirring to incorporate. Pour the final cherry mixture into a 9- or 10-inch prepared pie crust, and top with a second crust. Pinch, crimp and vent the top crust. Brush with a beaten egg if so desired and sprinkle lightly with coconut sugar. 7. Bake at 375 degrees for 55-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is steadily bubbling. Aluminum foil may be used around the crust edges to prevent browning during the second half of the bake. Transfer the pie to a cooling rack, and most importantly, allow the pie to cool completely before serving (3-4 hours). To learn more about the health benefits of cherries, visit www.NWCherries.com.
(BPT) - It’s that time of year again: the long-awaited season where football, food and team spirit reign. Every week offers another chance to kick back with family and friends and cheer on your favorite team. The time to host will be here before you know it, but are you prepared? Are you ready to throw a game day party of epic proportions? If the answer is no, there’s no need to panic. There are a few quick and easy things you can do to make your gathering touchdown-worthy and stress-free. Here are five time-saving tips for prepping your home for kickoff. 1. Start stocking up now. Simplify game day planning by stocking up on the essentials as soon as possible. Items like plates, silverware and napkins are a safe buy that you’ll always need. Next, shop the frozen food aisle for delicious, dependable meal items, so you’ll have a freezer stocked and at the ready even before the coin toss. 2. Keep finger foods front and center. Having handheld options is the way to go when building a football-friendly spread. Simple, dippable snacks, like SeaPak’s crowd-pleasing Pub Style Beer Battered Shrimp or Crab Poppers, are just what hungry fans crave. Want to take things up a notch? You can’t go wrong with a restaurant-inspired menu item, like crispy fish sandwiches, fish and chips or fish tacos, easily made with SeaPak’s Pub Style Beer Battered Cod. 3. Strategize those eating and seating arrangements. You want your guests to be comfortable, and that includes providing them a great view of the game and an easy path to the buffet. Situate chairs around the screen so they don’t block any lines of sight and make sure you create open lanes for foot traffic. Also remember that your guests will be carrying food and drinks around; adding a few coasters or pulling that priceless rug out of the way ahead of time will help you chillax when the whistle blows. 4. Make it a team effort. Don’t go it alone. Ask your friends to bring their own drinks or a side dish or, better yet, challenge the kids to come up with their own halftime show. The result will be a more memorable and enjoyable game day for the entire crowd. 5. Make sure your game-watching technology is in peak condition. After all, it’s not really game day if you can’t embrace the full experience, so make sure your TV and speakers are ready to rock. Take the equipment for a test drive beforehand, to ensure there’ll be no interference when the teams take the field. While it may seem like there are lots of details to cover, it’s easier than you think to be the MVP of your game day celebration. Treat your planning like the game itself and take it play-by-play, starting with the list above. It’s a surefire strategy for looking like a winner once the crowd assembles.
(BPT) - As you drive down the street, the threat of potential distractions is everywhere. Federal research shows that distracted driving is a factor in one out of every six crashes, and accounts for 5,000 automobile crash-related fatalities each year. While teens are commonly associated with distracted-driving issues - particularly texting the issue affects drivers of all ages. To help reduce distracted driving crash-related injuries, and loss of life, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Auto Alliance) offer these tips to help drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. * Gear up before you go out. Whether it’s your sunglasses, your Bluetooth(R) earpiece or your favorite hat, putting accessories on before starting your car allows you to keep your hands on the wheel, and not your wardrobe while driving. * Stop for a bite. A quick bite for lunch should be enjoyed in a restaurant, or your non-moving vehicle, instead of on the go while you’re driving. This allows you to take a break, enjoy your food and not worry about spilling beverages on yourself. * Don’t be afraid to pull over. If another matter begs your attention - such as settling a disagreement between your children - pull the car over to handle the situation properly rather than trying to attend to it while you are driving. * Have a plan in place. Sometimes this is easier said than done. However, if you are traveling somewhere for the first time, you should understand your route before starting the drive. Program your GPS, or share printed directions with your navigator before you depart. * Call them back. Cell phone usage is one of the leading causes of distracted driving-related crashes
and not all of them are related solely to texting. If your phone rings while you’re in the car and you do not have a hands-free headset already on, let the caller go to voicemail. You can always call them back when you arrive at your destination or your next stop. * If you don’t need it, store it. Sporting equipment, kids’ toys or groceries, your car is the transport home for many things and sometimes those items can jostle back and forth while you’re driving - particularly on those sharp turns. And when things start moving, your natural reaction is to take your
eyes off the road and reach for them. Instead, secure items in the trunk or in another storage compartment before the drive. Keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel is one of the most important things you do every single day you choose to drive so be sure to apply the tips above and make driving your No. 1 priority. Your loved ones and those you share the road with will thank you for it. For even more helpful tips and strategies to minimize driving distractions, visit www.decidetodrive.org.

Don’t get hacked! Time to get serious about password safety
Top tips for locking down your online security (BPT) - We all know hiding your house key under the doormat is a terrible idea, but we do it anyway because it’s a convenient backup. When it comes to safeguarding passwords, especially in a family setting, people often choose convenience over safety. As families manage their digital information and online accounts, many end up opting for that less secure key-under-the-doormat solution. People are already sharing passwords, and their methods of sharing are not always the best. Some 41 percent of adults with online accounts admit to sharing passwords with friends and family, according to an Americans and Cybersecurity survey by Pew Research Center. Yet, 90.8 percent of respondents say they know that having strong passwords helps them better protect their families. Consider the number of security breaches that continue to make national news: * In 2016, we learned the Yahoo data breach compromised 1 billion accounts. * In that same month, we learned 167 million email addresses and passwords were stolen from LinkedIn. * In September 2017, a security breach at Equifax was reported, exposing Social Security numbers and other personal data of 143 million users, which is nearly half the U.S. population. Now more than ever, it’s clear how important it is to protect our personal information online. According to a Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, 81 percent of data breaches involve weak, reused or stolen credentials. That’s significantly higher than the 63 percent it was in 2016. “If you were to dig into the reasons behind these repeated, overly simple, shared passwords, it’s actually pretty understandable as to how this happens,” according to LastPass Senior Director of Product, Steve Schult. “The average person has some 200-plus logins. If you were to give each its own strong, unique password, that’s way too many for one person to keep track of and remember, let alone all
the other family members that might also use some of those accounts.” But there’s no need to trade security for the convenience of digital access. With a password manager designed for individual or family use, you can create those strong passwords for all the accounts you and your family use, and store them within a secure vault that’s accessed by a single master password only you know. These digital lockboxes protect your information under multiple layers of security, making it impossible for digital thieves to hack and access. If you’re debating whether to make the switch to a digital password manager, here’s a few ways it can improve your family’s online security and help stop the struggle with passwords. Create rock-solid passwords: Most password managers offer a secure password generator that allows you to set and create a long, strong and unique password for every online account. You can create a password up to 100 characters long, including numbers and symbols. Another way to do it is by using the “passphrase” approach, meaning string together
words that create a phrase. Be sure to steer clear of birthdays, anniversaries, street names and other specific personal details that can be found through a simple social media search. Secure more than just passwords: There’s an endless number of passwords and sensitive information you can store in your password manager, including banking logins, passport and license numbers, shopping accounts, email and social media passwords and more. By storing all of this information in your secure vault, you’ll always have access to the information whenever and wherever you may need it. Safely share passwords with family members: One benefit of a password manager that’s designed for family use is that it lets you safely and conveniently store passwords and valuable documents in folders for flexible sharing with others in the family. LastPass Families includes unlimited shared folders, which means you can create multiple folders and store an endless number of passwords and share with those in your family. For example, you could put your banking account password into one folder and share access with your spouse, have another folder for your favorite streaming services and securely share access with the whole family. All the while, you can keep your personal accounts private. Use it as a teaching moment: Have a talk with your kids about how passwords are the keys to our digital lives, and how good password habits help protect everything from personal details to finances. Show them how to build a good password, and how tools like a password manager can create a safe way to access and share accounts. It’s an important life skill that will help them protect themselves for years to come. Plan for the digital afterlife: When there’s a death or serious emergency, it turns out that state and federal laws, along with service agreements, can block your family from getting access to your online accounts. With a password manager that allows emergency access, family members can get into your password vault and have access to whatever they need. OUR LIVES ARE DESIGNED BY THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE The power to make decisions is an incredible tool and this is a good thing. With this tool, we can reconfigure our life, repair our families, rebuild our communities, and reconstruct our self-determination. When we make decisions that are in alignment with where we say we want to go, those decisions become the power that drives us forward and propels us toward the destination to which we have set our intention. When making decisions, it is good practice to always begin with the end in mind. How much better though to begin with the One who is Alpha and Omega – Beginning and End? The wisdom writer in Proverbs sagely counseled that we should, “Trust the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding; acknowledge him in all of your ways, and he will direct your path.” Whenever we find ourselves confused or unclear, perhaps, it is because we have disconnected our process of decision making from the Source. Remember, the Source is the channel from which comes the light. Whenever there is a dark situation or experience, we can benefit simply from turning to then turning on the light. If you want to make better decisions and live by divine design, include these steps in your decision-making process: 1. Trust God to participate in the process. It does not matter, however heavy or light the matter, invite God to weigh-in. The more you do, the greater will grow your faith and trust; 2. Refuse to lean solely on your own understanding. Though you are conscious, cognizant, connected, and more, learn to lean on the Lord. If you share the weight of your burden with the Lord, you will find that you have a companion worthy to carry. You will find this companion to be stable, able, reliable, and dependable; 3. Acknowledge the GPS (God’s Positioning System): admit that you can use some help getting to the destination; recognize where you are beginning from and where you want to go; allow the guidance of the Omniscient God to illuminate your path; 4.Accept His direction, for it leads His will, which is good. CHICAGO— Gov. Bruce Rauner is announcing a new, innovative program to help formerly incarcerated men and women start their own businesses. The Pathway to Enterprise for Returning Citizens (PERC) program is the first of its kind in Illinois. In its pilot phase, the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) will screen candidates and select 125 people who are returning to communities on the south and west sides of Chicago. When they go home, they will receive in-depth training and coaching on how to run a business. This program will give them the opportunity to spur economic development and create jobs in the same communities in which they live. “One of my most important goals since taking office has been to fix our broken criminal justice system and give people a real chance at success when they are released from prison,” Rauner said. “This program not only allows us to create jobs in underserved communities, it also drives down the recidivism rate and sets families on the right course.” The program highlights Rauner’s commitment to equip incarcerated men and women with the tools they need to make a smoother transition back to the community.
Earlier this year, he also initiated a five-year pilot program that provides them with training on how to prepare a budget, write a business plan, set realistic goals, and build interpersonal relationship skills. The governor also has created a pathway for former offenders to get a state ID, access to their birth certificates, and professional licenses in healthcare fields and cosmetology. The Illinois prison population is down 12 percent since Rauner took office in 2015. “We are laser focused on improving outcomes for the men and women who leave our custody,” said IDOC Director John Baldwin. “Many of them have entrepreneurial minds and this program is just what they need to hone their skills and build a better life for themselves.” Training services for the PERC program will be provided by The Safer Foundation of Illinois, Bethel New Life in the Austin neighborhood, Chatham Business Association, North Lawndale Employment Network, and Sunshine Enterprises, based in Woodlawn. Those who complete the program successfully will be positioned to receive a privately funded loan of up to $50,000 to launch their businesses. The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) will monitor the program. “Our researchers will keep a close watch on
the PERC program,” said ICJIA Executive Director John Maki. “We will be measuring its effectiveness so that the leadership team can make sure it’s working to improve public safety outcomes.” PERC is created through a public-private partnership between the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA), IDOC, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Chicago Neighborhood Initiative Micro Finance Group (CNIMFG), which will underwrite loans for the start-up capital. “This program leverages the resources of three state agencies and a nonprofit,” said Randy Kurtz, deputy director at ICJIA. “It is testimony to what can be done when organizations work together.” “We’re excited and honored to be part of this program,” said Erica King, vice president at the CNIMFG. “It will empower retuning citizens to create opportunities for others to follow, which tracks closely our CNIMFG mission.” More than $1 million was raised from private-sector foundations, including Citibank Foundation, The Chicago Community Trust, the Perry Family Foundation, US Bank and the Hughes Foundation, to get the program off the ground.

EVENT OF THE WEEK
Annual Black Walnut Harvest The Annual Black Walnut Harvest has erupted with strong success. As of October 30, 2017, roughly 20 million pounds of Black Walnuts have been collected out of an estimated 25-30 million pound season. Demand remains high as Black Walnuts provide a substantial economic benefit for communities across the Midwest and continues to serve as an important, generational tradition for families alike. Every year, people across the Midwest band together to continue the natural-born tradition of collecting fallen Black Walnuts and selling them to Hammons Hulling Stations. People have reported participating in the harvest for a number of reasons apart from the financial benefits. Good exercise, valuable lessons to children on hard work and great family memories all top the list. However, the harvest is also vital to local economies across all 14 states, as an estimated 5–6 million dollars will be poured back into the local communities. The harvest has become essential for providing additional income for both the families harvesting and the hullers themselves. The 2017 harvest ends November 6, 2017 and individuals, families and organizations alike are encouraged to participate while nuts are still on the ground. As prices remain at an all time high of $15 per 100lbs after hulling across 14 states and 235+ hulling stations, it’s a great way to earn extra money by just picking up a natural resource. For information on how to get involved in the harvest, visit http://www.black-walnuts. com to learn more and to find a hulling station near you.

Test your cholesterol knowledge:
Help protect your heart health (BPT) - More than 100 million U.S. adults have high cholesterol, a major risk factor for developing heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two out of three don’t have the condition under control and more than half don’t get treatment, the CDC reports. What’s more, three in 10 patients who experience side effects from their cholesterol medication discontinue treatment, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Why are so many people with high cholesterol taking risks by not treating their condition? “I find that many patients don’t fully understand the serious consequences of high cholesterol, and it’s not a condition that causes symptoms they can feel,” says Dr. Shawn Dhillon, founder and medical director of the Calvert Medical Group in Baltimore and a leading authority on cholesterol. “Unfortunately, this can often lead them to not seek treatment or stop taking their medicine that helps keep their cholesterol levels under control.” Untreated high cholesterol can increase your risk of developing heart disease and having a heart attack. To lower cholesterol, doctors often prescribe statins, a treatment category that includes more than seven different types currently available. Despite the proven impact of statins on lowering cholesterol, at least 50 percent of people stop taking their prescribed statin within one year of starting it, according to a 2012 survey which was the largest known cholesterol survey conducted in the U.S. “When patients are first diagnosed with high cholesterol, I help them understand what the diagnosis means for their lifestyle and why they need to take their statin daily,” says Dhillon, who personally has high cholesterol and takes the statin LIVALO® (pitavastatin) daily to treat his condition. “It’s also crucial to have a conversation with my patients about questions or concerns about their statin. By identifying any issues, I can either change the amount of the medicine or try a different statin that might be more appropriate for them instead so they don’t give up on their medicine.” Want to learn more about high cholesterol and treatment options? Take this quiz to get the skinny on cholesterol risks and treatments: 1. All cholesterol is bad. True or false? Answer: False! Your body actually needs some cholesterol - a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs in two “forms.” Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) makes up most of the body’s cholesterol, and is the “bad” cholesterol. Having high levels of LDL-C can lead to plaque buildup in your arteries and result in heart disease and stroke. Statins work by blocking the important enzyme that your liver needs to produce the bad cholesterol in your body. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is “good” cholesterol, with doctors recommending having levels of 60 or higher. 2. High cholesterol is caused by: A. Diet; B. Lifestyle; C. Heredity; or D. All of the above. Answer: D. All of the above! While diet and lifestyle are leading
causes of high cholesterol, some people may be predisposed to having high cholesterol due to family history. 3. I can control my high cholesterol by: A. Eating fewer fatty foods and carbohydrates; B. Exercising more; C. Taking medication; D. All of the above. Answer: D. All of the above! Many people will need to take medication like a statin to help control their high cholesterol, on top of practicing healthy food habits and exercising. 4. Cholesterol-lowering medications, called statins, are all the same. True or false? Answer: False! Statins are the most common type of cholesterollowering medication, but they are not all the same. In fact, there are seven different statins currently available. Many statins have a risk of interacting with other drugs or substances due to how they’re processed in the body. Perhaps the most commonly known interaction
is the conflict between some statins and grapefruit, but medications such as those for high blood pressure and the prevention of blood clots, even many over-the-counter medications and supplements, also have the potential to cause issues when taken with certain statins. However, LIVALO, along with a heart-healthy diet and regular exercise, can improve overall cholesterol levels while having a lower risk of certain
unpredictable drug interactions based upon how it’s processed in the body. Finding the right statin to treat your high cholesterol is vital, Dr. Dhillon says. “Statins are first-line medications for treating high cholesterol, and their safety and effectiveness are supported by years of research, clinical trials and years of good patient outcomes,” he says. “However, common side effects, such as muscle aches and overall fatigue, may deter people from taking their medication. That’s why it is essential that people have an open dialogue with their doctor to ensure they find a statin that works for them, as an individual.” Dr. Dhillon says LIVALO is his top choice to help his patients manage their cholesterol because the medication differs from other statins in some important ways, including: * The body breaks down LIVALO differently than most other statins, so it can be less likely to interact with other medicines (including commonly prescribed medications for high blood pressure and the prevention of blood clots), vitamins and supplements. * Because LIVALO is metabolized through a different pathway in the body, patients are also able to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. Certain statins, other than LIVALO, may interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice resulting in too much drug in the blood stream, increasing the risk of adverse events. * The FDA has recently cautioned the public on the potential adverse effect of statins on glucose levels as a side effect of statin therapy. Importantly, LIVALO has been studied in patients with Type 2 Diabetes, many of which are on multiple medications and demonstrated a non-significant change in blood glucose levels. “Unmanaged high cholesterol can lead to serious health consequences, including heart disease,” Dhillon says. “The good news is, making healthy lifestyle choices including diet and exercise, and finding the right statin for you, are effective ways to manage your high cholesterol.”
