JOHN W. ROGERS JR. GIVES $10.5 MILLION TO FUND STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS, CAREER PATHS
A
$10.5 million gift from University Trustee John W. Rogers Jr., LAB’76, will support a scholarship fund for Laboratory Schools students at the University of Chicago. The gift will also establish a professional development program for underresourced college students to pursue careers in finance. This raises Rogers’ total giving to the University of Chicago and its affiliated Laboratory Schools to $15 million. Of the new gift, $4 million is a bequest to the John W. Rogers and Victoria Marie Rogers Scholarship Fund, a part of the University’s endowment that is used to provide scholarship support at the Laboratory Schools, which Rogers has been involved with for more than 40 years. “The Laboratory Schools and the University of Chicago teach students how to think while respecting different points of view and different experiences,” said Rogers. “It’s part of what makes them such great places.” Rogers, the chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, served on Laboratory Schools’ board from 1987 until 1994, the same year he was honored with the Laboratory Schools Distinguished Alumni Award. He returned to the Laboratory Schools board in 1998. President Robert J. Zimmer appointed Rogers to the role of the Laboratory Schools chair in 2009, and in Rogers’ roles as chair and Lab+ Campaign co-chair, he has helped the Laboratory Schools raise $80 million. “John Rogers has contributed his time, energy and unbridled enthusiasm to our community,” said Beth A. Harris, interim director of the Laboratory Schools, who has known Rogers since they served on the board together. “Once again, his generosity is helping to make our schools stronger. His bequest will help to provide an experience that he so valued to outstanding students—ones who might not otherwise be able to benefit from a Lab education.” Another $4.5 million of the gift will establish and endow the Ariel Investments Internship Program in Finance, an extensive series of new programming that will encourage students from low-income families and racial and ethnic

in civil rights for women, people of color, immigrants, religious minorities, the disabled, the LGBTQIA community, and many other vulnerable groups, is in danger of being erased. We stand in solidarity with our partners, children, and allies for the protection and in defense of our rights, our safety, and our individual voices,” organizers stated. “As the Illinois organizers for the March, we invite all women and our allies to join this national effort and turn fear into direct, positive action by demanding protection of civil rights for all Americans,” said spokeswoman Chakraborty. “It is our vision that the Women’s March on Washington will be a springboard for action and will galvanize the hundreds of thousands of marchers to return to their local communities and participate in a multitude of local efforts directed at positive social change.”
The work of the Illinois chapter has already been endorsed and aided by Chicago Women Take Action (CWTA), the National Organization of Jewish Women (NOJW), Rainbow PUSH Coalition, among other organizations and local advocacy groups. The national efforts have been lauded and supported by organizations such as Amnesty International, National Organization for Women (NOW), The Gathering for Justice, CHIRLA, 1199 SEIU, and many more. The Illinois organizers are calling for partnerships and community allies to help with a wide range of support, including but not limited to: getting the word out through meetings and social networks, sponsorships/ donations for marchers who need assistance to go to D.C., and forming a statewide network of support and resources for Illinois marchers.
Millennials' Savings Priorities? Depends on Their Sex NewsUSA - One of the biggest differences between millennial men and women when it comes to saving? Vacations. Women cited it as their top short-term savings goal in TD Ameritrade's illuminating "Millennials and Money Survey," while men were most concerned with having an emergency fund. But don't think those females surveyed aren't also worried about coming up short in a crisis. In fact, by a 12-percent margin -; 62 percent vs. 50 percent -; more females were focused on socking money away to deal with what's described as "the potential for a financial disruption."

minorities to pursue career paths in the finance industry. Specifically, the gift will expand opportunities for minority students to obtain paid internships at endowment, foundation and non-profit investment offices. Rogers believes this aspect of the program sets it apart, as it will allow more minority students to pursue careers in an industry that traditionally has lacked diversity. “Many groups have historically been underrepresented in the finance industry,” Rogers said, “and none more than blacks. For example, a recent study showed blacks as holding only 1 percent of top investment roles,” he noted. “This program will not only enable students to learn about career paths within different endowment and foundation and non-profit investment offices, but will expose them to opportunities within the different types of firms managing a vast range of traditional and alternative asset classes on their behalf,” Rogers said. “The University of Chicago has a large population of bright, talented and diverse students who can make a difference in the field, and I am very proud to support this initiative,” he added. Rogers’ gift will support career advising, professional development workshops, networking opportunities and funded internships for College students. “The University of Chicago has a deep commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity,” said Meredith Daw, executive director of Career Advancement. “Because of John Rogers’ gift, more students than ever will be able to go after their dreams and find meaningful careers, regardless of their background.” The gift also includes a portion of unrestricted support. In recognition of Rogers’ support and the groundbreaking public service of his late parents, the University named Rogers Family House in the Campus North Residential Commons.

PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP MEETS WITH BLACK CELEBRITIES By Lauren Victoria Burke (NNPA Newswire Contributor) In an effort to show that he plans to be the “president for all Americans” and to bolster support in the Black community, President-elect Donald Trump recently met with a number of Black celebrities and businessmen including rapper Kanye West, billionaire Robert Johnson and NFL Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Ray Lewis. Unlike so many other visitors to Trump Tower, Trump greeted West in the lobby; members of the media snapped pictures and yelled questions. “We’ve been friends for a long time,” Trump told reporters at the end of the meeting. “We discussed life.” With rumors swirling that Trump is having difficulty finding someone to perform at his January 20, 2017 inaugural, there was unconfirmed speculation that West may serve as some form of entertainment at an inaugural event. In a separate meeting, Trump talked to Brown and Lewis about economic empowerment in the Black community and urban development. Trump recently selected famed neurosurgeon and presidential candidate Ben Carson to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. After the meeting, Brown said that he fell in love with Trump, “because he really talks about helping African-American, Black people. That’s why I’m here.” Brown continued: “When he goes through what he went through to become the president, he got my admiration, because no one gave him a chance.” CNN contributor and former HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill expressed concerns about Brown’s comments during a recent segment on the network. “I don’t have a problem with Jim Brown saying, look, we want to do urban development,” said Hill. “We want housing. We want to make demands of you, but to say you ‘fell in love with’ Donald Trump or his platform or his campaign to me is disturbing.” Hill added: “That’s not to suggest that Donald Trump didn’t have any real Black friends. But when [you] look at where his political commitments and economic investments are, they don’t suggest any kind of care for the Black community.” On the same morning of West’s visit the Trump transition team announced that Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson was selected as Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State. Tillerson is yet another businessman with close ties to Russia who has no foreign policy or federal government experience. President Obama once called Kanye West a “jackass”; he was also quick to add that West was talented. Over the years, Trump has been in the company of several African American celebrities including Mike Tyson, Don King and Russell Simmons. Most of those affiliations appear to be related to charity events and other happenings around New York City. So far, Trump has selected Steven Mnuchin for Secretary of Treasury; Elaine Chao for Secretary of Transportation; Wilbur Ross for Secretary of Commerce; Rep. Mike Pompeo as CIA Director; Jeff Sessions for Attorney General; South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as Ambassador to the United Nations; Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education; Rep. Tom Price for Health and Human Services; Ben Carson for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Mick Mulvaney as the director of White House Office of Management and Budget; and Vincent Viola for the Secretary of the Army. DEVRY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO BENEFIT FROM $100 MILLION FTC SETTLEMENT New Federal Educational Requirements Designed to Eliminate More Fraud
By Charlene Crowell (NNPA Newswire Columnist)
For the third time in two years, a large for-profit college has faced charges of defrauding its students. This time the charges stem from promises of jobs and incomes that never materialized. On December 15, the suburban Chicago-based DeVry University agreed to a $100 million settlement to end a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Filed in January, the FTC charged that from 2008 to 2015 the for-profit institution engaged in deceptive marketing and advertising. According to FTC, prospective DeVry students were told in recruitment and in advertising that 90 percent of its graduates secured employment in their chosen fields within six months of matriculation. A second institutional promise was that one year following graduation they would earn incomes that were 15 percent higher than those earned by graduates from other colleges and universities. Under the settlement terms, DeVry will pay $49.4 million in cash to qualifying students who were harmed by the deceptive ads, as well as provide $50.6 million in debt relief. The debt being forgiven includes the full balance owed—$30.35 million—on all unpaid private student loans that DeVry issued to undergraduates between September 2008 and September 2015, and $20.25 million in student debts for items such as tuition, books and lab fees. “When people are making important decisions about their education and their future, they should not be misled by deceptive employment and earnings claims,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “The FTC has secured compensation for the many students who were harmed, and I am pleased that DeVry is changing its practices.” Once approved by federal courts, DeVry will be required to immediately notify the students who will receive debt relief as well as credit bureaus and collection agencies of the impending debt forgiveness. DeVry will also release transcripts and diplomas previously withheld from students due to outstanding debt, and will cooperate with future requests for diplomas and transcripts and related enrollment or graduation information. This most recent settlement is yet another reminder of how some of the largest for-profit colleges have failed their students and caused them to become indebted without the educational

Even for borrowers who did not default, interest rates were more than twice as expensive as interest rates on federal loans. Corinthian Colleges was forced in 2015 to close its 107 campuses while its parent organization, ECMC Group agreed to multiple stipulations that included: • $480 million in debt relief for Genesis loan borrowers; • An end to improper debt collection practices; and • The removal of negative information from student borrowers’ credit reports. • Unfortunately, these three colleges and universities often perpetrated their frauds against veterans and people of Charlene Crowell says that under the settlement terms, DeVry will pay color. $49.4 million in cash to qualifying students who were harmed by the “There must be more vigorous efforts to prevent deceptive ads, as well as provide $50.6 million in debt relief. schools that use deceptive practices from accessing federal credentials promised. student aid in the first place,” remarked Whitney BarkleyCalifornia’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education Denney, a policy counsel with the Center for Responsible issued an emergency decision on August 26, directing ITT Tech Lending. “We’ve seen the fallout from these abusive recruitment and its subsidiaries to cease enrollment of any new students at 15 practices over and over again.” locations across the state. ST. LOUIS-- The Peiffer Rosca Wolf law firm filed a class action in the Circuit Court for St. Louis County, Missouri, alleging discrimination against two African American female employees in late 2015. The lawsuit alleges that after an African American female employee of the defendants made claims of sexual harassment against a white male assistant manager, she was put on two week unpaid leave, and then multiple African American female employees were fired, including the plaintiffs to the suit. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges “…during the period of Friday’s ‘investigation,’ the assistant manager… who was accused of sexual harassment was promoted to the manager of the Downtown St. Louis Friday’s.” The lawsuit contains eight counts: race discrimination, race by association discrimination, sex discrimination, and retaliatory discharge for each plaintiff. The lawsuit seeks damages including “monetary damages to compensate for lost wages, lost benefits, damage to their personal and professional reputations, emotional distress, and for punitive damages.

The Experts At George Street Photo & Video Identify Top Wedding Trends For 2017 CHICAGO - As a premier, award-winning wedding photography company that spans more than 40 cities, George Street Photo & Video is uniquely qualified to predict the hottest trends that are sure to be part of many nuptials throughout 2017. And there are five trends – from fashion to food to photography – that the experts at George Street expect to see couples embrace in the new year, as they look for creative ways to personalize their big day and make it even more memorable for everyone involved. “Couples want to make their day a true reflection of themselves and their love for each other,” says Nicole Ettenhofer, director of marketing and public relations for George Street. “These creative trends for 2017 are things we’ve been seeing more of lately, and we expect them to really take off in the coming months.”
w DECADENT DONUTS: Why get rid of the traditional wedding cake in favor of donuts? Because you might as well give the people what they love – fried pastries! Plus, donuts are a memorable replacement for cake, especially if you get creative with the presentation. CROWNS: Bridal crowns are hot and can be created to achieve almost any look -- from a romantic floral crown to a glamorous crown of jewels. Brides have embraced crowns for their flattering look and because they’re a departure from the expected. MISMATCHED BRIDESMAIDS’ DRESSES: Brides are often relieved to hear that mismatched dresses for the bridal party are not only acceptable but “en vogue.” After all, it can be difficult and stressful to find one perfect dress that is the right fit for each person and her fashion preferences. NIGHT VIEWS: Gorgeous wedding photos taken at night are a hot trend, thanks to the romantic, modern look of evening landscapes and starry skies. Photographers can get especially creative with lighting after the sun goes down. ONLINE PLANNING: We do everything else online, so why not plan a wedding that way? It can be the most time-efficient method of shopping around for locations and services and finding great ideas. Couples can also use the George Street Photo & Video online planning guide.

(Family Features) Skillfully balancing an entire family’s demands from school, sports, activities and careers leaves little down time, but keeping family values front and center may be easier than you think when you make a commitment to carving out meaningful moments to share.
schedule, which is why consciously setting aside family time is essential. Once it’s set, you may be tempted to turn the open night at home into an invitation to catch up on housework or even just relax. Avoid the temptation and instead look for fun ways to spend that time as a family. The dishes and laundry will still be waiting after you spend a few hours together. Start a puzzle or play a board game. Initiate a DIY project for the house, spend time baking or cooking a meal or simply sit together and talk about what’s happening in the lives of those who matter most.
Unplug from the digital world.
Today’s technology-ridden world makes it easy for families to be present but not engaged. When you create a technology-free zone, you eliminate distractions so you can keep the focus on each other. Dedicate time every week to spend as a family without the use of TV, tablets, computers and phones.
Create traditions.
Bond and bake together.

Comcast Cable Accepting Proposals for Two New African American Owned Independent Networks Comcast Cable recently announced the company is now accepting proposals for two substantially African American owned, independent networks that it will launch in select Comcast markets by January 2019. The announcement is part of the company’s commitment to launch independently owned and operated networks as part of a series of public interest commitments made by Comcast in connection with the NBCUniversal transaction completed in 2011. Since the NBCUniversal transaction, Comcast has successfully launched over 20 independent networks, doubling the number of independent networks launches that it committed to as part of the transaction. Four of those networks were launched as a result of a public request for channels that satisfied the criteria established in several agreements between Comcast and leading diversity organizations: two African American majority owned networks (ASPiRE and REVOLT) and two Hispanic American operated networks (Baby First Americas and El Rey). Additionally, two substantially Hispanic American owned networks, Kids Central and Primo TV, will launch on Comcast Cable systems beginning in January 2017. “We are looking forward to receiving another round of great proposals as we begin the process to launch two more African American majority owned networks,” said Justin Smith, Senior Vice President of Content Acquisition for Comcast Cable. Criteria for selecting the next two substantially African American owned networks that Comcast will launch include: the content of the network; whether the network is fully financed; whether the network’s ownership and/or management group(s) are well established, have relevant experience, and are substantially owned by African Americans; whether the network is already launched and has existing or potential multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) distribution; price; and whether the network and its potential carriage provide value to Comcast and its customers. Comcast will accept proposals for every major genre, including general entertainment, movies, music, kids, news, and sports. Applicants may visit http://corporate. comcast.com/diverseprogramming to submit a proposal and learn about the terms and conditions. Proposals are due by March 15, 2017, and the two networks will be selected in the coming months.

COULD RELIGION BE GETTING THE BACK SEAT IN COLLEGE? (FAMU-TALLAHASSEE) – Being away from home with newfound freedom creates the perfect mixture of circumstances for college students who want to place their religion on the back burner. For many, the college lifestyle involves partying while mixing their obligations to education. As a result, college students are minimally, if ever, focused on their religion. “College is like a whole other world,” said DeKierra Barber, a senior pre-physical therapy student at Florida A&M University, who believes she is not 100 percent religious. “You have the parties, Greek life and extracurricular activities,” said Barber. “Religion just ends up going down on students’ priority list. I think that students get sucked into the college lifestyle.” Students leave their parents’ household and are no longer bound by the rules that governed them. Pastor Dave Hess from Every Nation Tallahassee, who is also a campus pastor at Florida A&M University, said, “I think a lot of people never really believed the teachings of their so-called religion in the first place. When they got to college, away from the supervision of their parents, they begin to live out what they had really believed and what they really wanted to do all along.” Hess continued, “Some people actually become more serious about their beliefs during college. This was my experience when I was a student. I was close to walking away from my
forget the values that their parents instilled in them,” she said. Asonya Tomlinson, a freshman nursing student from Miami, thinks people may be frustrated with how religious practices affect society. “There are a lot of homosexuals in the world, and religious acts hold up reasons why they can’t get married and get judged differently than everyone else.” There is really no correct answer when asked if religion is really getting left behind in college. Every college is different, as is every student. Making time to find a campus ministry and getting involved is always a good option for those who want to continue their faith after starting college. Sometimes just making that connection will be the difference between spiritual isolation and the development of a faith-filled home away from home. Christian faith, but when I began to study it more seriously I became a convinced believer.” Students may turn from religion because the teachings of scripture may conflict or may not condone the activities students engage in. A lot of students feel they will be looked down upon by the church. Darnica Hookfin, a third year history student from Cleveland, who is also the vice-president of Every Nation Tallahassee campus ministries, said, “If your faith wasn’t well-grounded, it was easily shaken.” Hookfin believes higher education is moving students away from religion. “When people get to college, they
