GRASSE ADVANCES BILLS TARGETING PUBLIC HEALTH TO HOUSE FLOOR

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working to improve public health and alleviate bureaucratic burdens, state Rep. Nicolle Grasse, D-Arlington Heights, passed a series of measures out of House committees last week addressing several challenges in healthcare.

“These measures take meaningful steps to expand access, improve patient care, and strengthen accountability in our healthcare system,” said Grasse. “By addressing critical gaps, we’re ensuring better outcomes for those who need it the most.”

Notably, Grasse passed House Bill 2493 out of its committee requiring county clerks to create a remote marriage application process, allowing those in hospice or impaired by disability to go through the marriage application process with their partner in a remote setting.

Aiming to expand coverage and improve healthcare efficiencies, Grasse’s House Bill 3699 requires insurance to start covering any medically necessary prescribed vitamins. Additionally Grasse garnered the votes to pass House Bill 2371, streamlining reimbursement and removing out of pocket costs for dental patients. And, Grasse’s House Bill 3849 authorizes hospice or home health service employees to deliver a patient’s prescription order or controlled substance — ensuring essential medications are delivered faster.

To increase accountability in healthcare, Grasse’s House Bill 1712 further protects patients’ end of life medical preferences, requiring the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to establish clear oversight and uniform training to ensure adherence to POLST forms — documents that guide emergency and long-term care for patients.

Plus, Grasse’s House Bill 2397 responds to the rising number of deaths of incarcerated elderly by requiring IDOC to publicly report on Hospice and Palliative Care, giving the legislature insight into the true state of hospice care in correctional facilities. Similarly, House Bill 2877 would require the Hospice and Palliative Care Advisory Board to inform the legislature on the state of care for those experiencing a serious or life-limiting illness, in order to provide actionable recommendations for state hospice and palliative standards.

“I’m thrilled to gain bipartisan support with many of these measures which will positively impact healthcare patients and providers,” said Grasse. “I look forward to bringing these in front of the House floor and getting smart pieces of policy across the finish line.”

AMMONS ADVANCES BILL PROTECTING LOCAL DRINKING WATER FROM UNDERGROUND CONTAMINATION

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working toward protecting clean water access as Chair of the Energy & Environment Committee, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, has successfully passed a measure protecting critical sources of drinking water like the Mahomet Aquifer from pollution by banning carbon sequestration — a process involving injecting captured carbon underground — in areas that overlie or are near sole-source aquifers.

“I fought for a sole source designation for the Mahomet Aquifer in 2015, and I’m standing up again to protect over 15 counties that count on this aquifer’s safe drinking water,” said Ammons. “By banning carbon sequestration in areas with only one aquifer, we ensure these communities have clean water for generations to come.”

Sole-source aquifers are classified by the EPA as an underground water supply that provides at least 50% of its drinking water for its area and has no safe, alternative water source.

House Bill 3614 would amend the Environmental Protection Act by restricting carbon sequestration activity within a facility that is near sole-source aquifers, eliminating the risks of water pollution.

“We cannot afford to gamble with corporate interests when clean water for over a million Illinoisans is on the line,” said Ammons. “Carbon sequestration is damaging to communities with limited water sources, and it’s big business who’s taking home the extra cash. If we don’t put protections in place for carbon sequestration, counties will have no economic alternative for safe drinking water.”

House Bill 3614 passed out of the Energy & Environment Committee, and will be favorably reported to the House Floor for consideration.

CHICAGO NATIVE AND OPERA SINGER PERFORMS IN ‘THE LISTENERS’ PRODUCTION

Continued from page 1

When McLin heard Heaston sing, she told her that she was really a soprano and an opera singer. She then showed Heaston photos of Black opera singers and told her that she was one of them.

McLin also encouraged Heaston to compete in the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), which was founded by Journalist Vernon Jarrett. She won first place in her Junior and Senior year of high school. She decided to get a degree in Classical Music. Once in school at the University of Akron, she fell in love with it.

Heaston portrays Claire Devon in “The Listeners,” which opened at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Sunday, March 30th, and runs until Friday, April 11th.

“The Listeners” is about a woman who is suffering from a persistent hum that no one else in her family hears. She joins a community group who also hears the hum. The role of Claire was written for Heaston by Missy Mazzoli. Heaston was recommended to Mazzoli by the Opera Philadelphia.

“She sent a questionnaire with all of these questions about my voice and the things I like to sing and where my voice feels the most comfortable, and she literally wrote the role for my voice, based off that questionnaire,” she said.

Heaston said it is a bit surreal to have a role in an opera written for her, even though historically composers have singers in mind when they write most of their operas. She said it is an honor to have the piece written by Mazzoli and

Royce Vavrek. Knowing that her name will be attached to the opera forever, Heaston said, it is something that is really incredible.

Heaston said “The Listeners” is set in current time. Heaston said she wants people to come and see the show and watch it unveil, the way they would if they were watching a television show on Netflix. She hopes that the audience takes away the fact that they are seeing something new and really enjoy it. She also hopes it can bridge the gap between people who are not really opera aficionados, and it makes them want to come back and experience more opera performances.

“I also want people who have been opera fans their whole lives to expand and to add something else to their repertoire of something that would love to see at the Lyric,” she said.

“The Listeners” world premiered with the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and premiered in the United States with the Opera Philadelphia.

Heaston said she enjoys the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet theatre. She said the people were so welcoming and received the opera very well. With the Philadelphia theatre, it was smaller and more intimate, and they responded as if they were in a movie theatre. Heaston said it was really exhilarating to hear the audience’s reactions -- the gasping and laughing and the quietness.

Chicago Department of Public Health Partnering with Department of Family and Support Services Senior Centers to Offer COVID-19

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is reminding individuals 65 and older to stay current on their COVID-19 vaccinations, which means receiving a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine six months after their initial dose. The 2024-2025 vaccine was released this past September, so seniors who received their first dose around that time would now be eligible for their second dose.

As part of its commitment to protecting the city’s most vulnerable residents, during March and April CDPH hosted several senior clinics in partnership with the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS). The clinics offered COVID-19 and flu vaccines to individuals 65 and older. If you have insurance, please bring your card. If you do not have insurance, you can still receive both vaccines with no out-of-pocket cost. No appointment necessary.

The final event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at the Englewood Satellite Senior Center, located at 653-657 W. 63rd St.

and Flu Vaccines

March 11, 2025 marked the 5th anniversary of the day the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.

“CDPH recognizes the dedication of frontline healthcare workers, providers, community organizations and everyone else that has worked tirelessly to keep Chicago healthy. This anniversary serves as a reminder to all Chicagoans to stay up to date with their vaccinations. COVID-19 vaccination rates have been decreasing every year since 2021 and we need to increase vaccine uptake to continue to protect public health,” said CDPH Commissioner Dr. Olusimbo ‘Simbo’ Ige, MD, MS, MPH.

As of March 8, only 13.3% of Chicagoans have received the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine. CDPH reminds everyone that staying current on COVID-19 and flu vaccines offers the best protection from serious illness and hospitalization.

Visit CDPH’s Immunization Clinics page to find the list of clinic locations and the full calendar of vaccination events.

GRAMMY-Nominated Classical-Meets-Hip-Hop Duo Black Violin Releases

New Single and Video

GRAMMY-nominated classical-meets-hip-hop duo Black Violin released their new single and video “Smoke.” Produced by Phil Beaudreau (Dr. Dre, Justin Bieber, The Game, Lalah Hathaway), the song is the second single released from their upcoming album Full Circle, set for release later this spring. “Nothing has ever been recorded like this song,” says Black Violin’s Kev Marcus. “There is no song in the history of songs that’s a viola solo like that. I watch a lot of Beat Bobby Flay, and the chefs are like, ‘This is me on a plate’—this is Wil on a track. It’s what the viola has always wanted, since the days of Bach, to be able to shine in a melodic, super-soulful way, and no one else in the world could make that song but us.”

Black Violin members Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus met on the first day of orchestra class in 1996 at Dillard High School of the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. (Baptiste originally wanted to play saxophone in the band, but the orchestra teacher got him assigned to his class after winning a golf bet with the band instructor.) Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges—Marcus attended Florida International University and Baptiste went to Florida State—but then reconvened, moved into an apartment together, and started trying to produce other musicians.

They developed an act covering hip-hop songs on their violins, which became popular in local clubs. Two years after sending in a tape to Showtime at the Apollo, they were invited to appear on the show—which they won, and kept

“Smoke”

winning. They were approached by the manager of Alicia Keys, who asked them to perform with the singer at the Billboard Awards. Other offers followed—they toured with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, and worked with the likes of Alessia Cara, 2 Chainz, and Lil Wayne. All the while, Black Violin continued touring non-stop (playing as many as 200 shows a year) and released two independent, self-financed albums before putting out the acclaimed Stereotypes in 2016, followed by 2019’s Take the Stairs, which was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2020 GRAMMYs.

Black Violin has always been about taking things further, exceeding expectations, challenging conventions. The duo has steadily built a devoted following and a diverse touring base— culminating in such triumphs as two sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, and appearances on the Today Show, CBS Mornings, and PBS Newshour—while occupying a musical lane that’s entirely its own.

Black Violin’s work extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into communities nationwide with numerous free performances for students and hands-on engagement with youth symphonies and community centers. Through collaborations with local and national education programs such as Turnaround Arts, Baptiste and Marcus connect with more than 100,000

students throughout the year, including low-income and Title 1 schools, and adopted Bethune Elementary, in Florida’s Broward County (near where they grew up) to initiate an ongoing mentorship program. In 2019, the duo launched the Black Violin Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth by working with them in their communities to provide access to quality music programs that encourage creativity and innovation.

Op Ed: Black Press and Black Church Unity Targeting TARGET

For over 198 years the Black Press and the Black Church have joined together for causes of freedom, justice, equality, equity, and empowerment. Today more than ever before there is renewed urgency for the Black Church and the Black Press to publicly amplify our mutual interests to protect and maintain the hard-fought gains and progress that has been accomplished by African Americans in the last two centuries.

On the record, “We are not going back in America and nowhere else in the world in 2025.” We have already suffered too much from the vicious unprecedented genocide, terrorism, and crimes against humanity during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, global imperialism, racism, colonialism, neocolonialism, reconstruction and Jim Crow, mass incarceration, and present day repressive policies and Executives Orders in an attempt to erase our history and legacy with libelous actions and falsehoods.

The prophetic voice of the Black Church continues to resonate with historic and contemporary inspiration and power. Together we are resolutely de -

manding respect from Target and those companies that make billions of dollars from our consumership.

We are not begging. We are demanding respect and an equitable business relationship with Target and corporate America. From executive decision makers to marketing and promotions account managers, to Human Resources directors, and to the shareholders of the companies, we demand economic restoration and respect.

We salute the bold leadership of The Reverend Jamal Harrison Bryant and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta and other Black Church leaders across the nation who are standing up and preaching liberation theology.

TARGET will continue to be our target. We in the Black Press of America will continue our public education and selective buying campaign. No respect, no buying. No justice, no peace. May God continue to bless the Black Church and the Black Press.

Rev. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and BlackPressUSA

For a fully-immersive experience each night after the show ends, shoppers should plan to experience the iconic public art projection, ART on THE MART. Get Your House In Order

I am not a betting woman, but I bet that those of you reading this column now—and have read it before—DO NOT have an estate plan. I am so confident in this that I’d be willing to put up a wager for everyone who presents their estate plan to me.

Why don’t more people, especially Black folks, have estate plans? From my experience, the reasons are clear:

1. They don’t believe they need one.

2 They don’t want to contemplate the inevitable.

3. They believe an estate plan is only for when you die.

4. They believe that an estate plan is cost prohibitive.

None of these are true.

An estate plan isn’t solely about distributing your assets after you pass. It’s also about protecting your wishes and ensuring a plan of care should you become incapable of making decisions for yourself. When done correctly, an estate plan provides both financial security and peace of mind—not just for you, but for your loved ones.

I once worked with two families in similar situations. One had a matriarch who had taken the time to create an estate plan, ensuring that her wishes were clear. The transition of her assets and care was seamless, reducing stress for everyone involved. The other family, however, had no such plan in place. What followed was years of confusion, legal battles, and fractured relationships. One family preserved their legacy with dignity, while the other endured unnecessary hardship.

People often ask me: What’s the biggest mistake in estate planning? The answer is simple. The biggest mistake is not having an estate plan at all. No matter your age or financial status, you need one. The best way to avoid this mistake is simply- JUST DO IT.

Don’t leave your family guessing. Make the decision today to protect your legacy. Will your estate plan be perfect? Probably not—what in life is? But families with a plan in place experience far less stress than those forced to navigate the chaos of an unplanned estate. A word to the wise is sufficient. Again - JUST DO IT!

Bye for now, Bren

Stakeholders Unite to Address Policy Barriers to Breast Cancer Care

WASHINGTON, PRNewswire -- Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, launched the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy, a bold initiative that unites stakeholders to improve access, affordability and outcomes for the breast cancer community.

“Too many people in the breast cancer community face unnecessary hurdles when it comes to getting the care they need, whether it’s the high cost of breast imaging or access to needed treatments. We also fail those living with stage 4 breast cancer as they are not fully represented in the data captured today”, said Molly Guthrie, Susan G. Komen vice president of policy and advocacy. “The Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy is about bringing people together—patients, advocates and experts—to tackle these challenges and create real change.”

The coalition will champion critical policy reforms, including the federal Access to Breast Cancer Diagnosis Act. This legislation aims to reduce financial barriers by requiring private health plans, including high-deductible plans, to fully cover the cost of diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging.

The coalition will also focus on more accurately capturing the scope and experiences of those living with metastatic, or stage 4, breast cancer. By working with regulatory and scientific agencies to improve data collection and count every person diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy aims to equip policymakers with needed information to strengthen treatment access, properly allocate resources and improve health outcomes for individuals living with metastatic breast cancer.

“Despite the great strides that have been made in screening and treating breast cancer, several barriers remain that hinder timely access to quality care,” said Reshema Kemps-Polanco, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Novartis US, steering committee member of the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy. “We have a long history of pioneering breast cancer research and now, through this partnership, we take a significant step forward to address challenges faced by patients and families that go beyond the medicine. Together, we can drive meaningful change for generations to come.”

“We are excited to be a part of this collaborative movement of game changing health leaders working towards proactive policy change to advance breast cancer science, address barriers to quality screening and treatment, improve access to affordable and high quality care, and favorably change patient outcomes,” said Ricki Fairley, CEO of TOUCH, the Black Breast Cancer Alliance and steering committee member of the Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy.

The need for patient-centered, evidence-based policy solutions to improve breast cancer care has never been more urgent. Every two minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer. Every 12 minutes in the U.S., a woman dies from breast cancer. One-third of these deaths could be prevented if everyone had affordable, timely, high-quality care. Our government must do more.

The Alliance for Breast Cancer Policy members collaborate on policy priorities, direct advocacy and developing educational materials. The coalition will also host high-impact virtual and in-person events to empower stakeholders, engage policymakers and improve the visibility of breast cancer issues at the federal levels.
