2 briefly MAYOR LIGHTFOOT UNVEILS CITYWIDE VISION FOR CONNECTED NETWORK OF TRAILS AND CORRIDORS
CHICAGO – Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gia Biagi, Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Commissioner Maurice Cox, and Chicago Park District Interim General Superintendent and CEO Rosa Escareño released a citywide vision of trails and open spaces that will contribute to a network of community-led green infrastructure projects that promote the health and well-being of Chicago residents and visitors. The citywide vision map is intended to add 48 miles of new assets to an existing 79-mile network. This vision also features Mayor Lightfoot’s $15+ million commitment to jumpstart key projects citywide. These projects include: Englewood Nature Trail African American Heritage Trail Chicago Boulevards System The 606/Bloomingdale Trail Weber Spur Chicago Riverwalk Extension to Ping Tom Park The Wild Mile Major Taylor Bike Trail Indian Ridge Marsh Big Marsh Hegewisch Marsh North Branch Parks In addition to these transformative projects enhancing the outdoor experience in neighborhoods, they will also assist in building community wealth.
MAYOR LIGHTFOOT ANNOUNCES $12.5 MILLION IN TRANSPORTATION COST RELIEF
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot announced Chicago Moves, a financial assistance program aimed at providing financial relief for Chicago residents struggling with transportation expenses, making Chicago the first and largest major city in the country to do so. Chicago Moves aims to help combat spiking costs of gas and rising inflation by providing $12.5 million in relief funding for disadvantaged Chicagoans. The program will be comprised of $7.5 million earmarked for $150 physical prepaid cards eligible for redemption at local Chicago gas stations as well as $5 million earmarked for $50 prepaid cards eligible for use on public transit. Chicago Moves comes at a critical moment in recent history for Chicago and the nation. Over the past several months, domestic and international pressures have forced the cost of gas to record highs. To make this program possible, the City has partnered with Fifth Third Bank and Onbe, a market-leading corporate disbursements fintech. Up to 50,000 physical prepaid cards of $150 will be distributed to eligible residents via a lottery system. These cards will be valid for one year after receipt and may only be spent on the cost of fuel at gas stations located within Chicago. Applications are limited to one per household. Beginning in May, cards will be distributed in five successive monthly waves of 10,000 residents. To be eligible for these cards, applicants must: Be residents of Chicago Be at least 18 years old Have a current and valid City sticker with correct mailing information for their vehicle Have a household income at or below 140% of the Area Median Income for Chicago (available here) The City will also distribute or add value to 100,000 cards for use on public transit in the amount of $50 each. These cards will not only help ease the burden of record-high gas prices but will help advance clean transportation by offering weeks of free public transit access to thousands of commuting Chicagoans. Of these 100,000 transit cards, 75,000 will be distributed based on geographic data, prioritizing high CTA-utilizing residents in low-income neighborhoods. An additional 25,000 transit cards will be distributed citywide. To be eligible for these cards, applicants must: Be residents of Chicago Have a household income at or below 140% of the Area Median Income for Chicago Applications for Chicago Moves will open on April 27, 2022. More information will be made available pending City Council approval.

14 designers named to Dorchester Industries Design Lab Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES
The three-year program is meant to amplify the work of creatives of color from different industries. The 14 people in the inaugural cohort are artists in fashion design, architecture, product design, dance, visual arts, culinary arts, fine art and design, agriculture, graphic design and fine jewelry design. Seven out of the 14 artists are from Chicago -- Norman Teague, Kendall Reynolds, Damarr Brown, Maya Bird-Murphy, Brandon Breaux, Summer Coleman and Catherine Sarr. The other artists are from London, Miami, Niger, New York and Los Angeles -- Tolu Coker, Germane Barnes, Mariam Issoufou Kamara, Kyle Abraham, Yemi Amu, Salome Asega and Kenturah Davis. Gates started thinking about the project a year and a half ago, when he became a part of Prada’s diversity and inclusion team. Prada was trying to find ways to manage and deal with issues around diversity and inclusion. Part of that work was internal work to ensure the team understands how race works around the world, and the politics of racial representation. The project Gates proposed was a cohort of great talent that would get to know each other and be able to support each other. The goal is for the cohort to be “more amplified, more networked and more cashed.” The artists were chosen by Miuccia Prada, Prada S.p.A. Co-CEO and Prada Creative Director; Ava DuVernay, writer and director; Sir David Adjaye, architect; and late designer Virgil Abloh, along with other dignitaries. There were 200 nominations and from that, 14 were chosen. “Prada has been an amazing ally to me,” said Gates. “In some ways the arts and the fashion world are coming together.” At the event on Tuesday, April 5th, at Stony Island Arts Bank, there was a conversation about design and the arts. Sarah Lewis, Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture and African and African American Studies at Harvard University; Dr. Louise Bernard, director of the Obama Presidential Library Museum; and Kimberly Drew, Associate Director at Pace Gallery, joined Gates for the conversation. Gates talked about the Design Lab is a way to acknowledge designers, not just in the fashion space or art space, but to expand the definition of designer. “For me, I know there are moments when my friends are solving life problems. They’re doing it in beautiful ways. And, they may not call themselves designers, but there’s this world that has a platform, that has resources, it has a way of moving things that if they were connected, and their ideas and very intentions were connected to that world, they would find themselves, not just making like ‘ I carve knives on the side as a hobby,’ they might find themselves carving knives all the time or they might have a subsequent new revenue stream,” Gates said. It led him to think about how to intentionally create a broad bandwith for understanding the word, designer, and then ask how someone like a choreographer can be considered a designer and offer the world something that can help solve its problems. Bernard said the idea of interdisciplinarity was natural to the idea of experimental and that led to a range of designers in the cohort. Gates believes that design is a byproduct of creative people being together and experimenting. “We’re sometimes just solving life problems. I think because Black people and this work … because we can’t always buy the things we want so it’s like, ‘let’s just build this addition onto the house,” Gates said. “In a way I think, sometimes, poor people and people of color are more directly connected to their bodies through the world of design than others who have been trained to think about design.”

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s songs from the Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to Lebo M’s rich choral numbers. Elton John, Lebo M, and Hans Zimmer all collaborated on the 2019 version of the film, executive produced by Julie Taymor and Thomas Schumacher, which has gone onto extraordinary worldwide success. SIMS, SENATE DEMOCRATS UNVEIL TAX RELIEF PLAN FOR ILLINOIS FAMILIES
Illinois State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) joined several other Senate Democratic Caucus members to unveil a $1.8 billion relief plan that suspends state taxes on groceries, gas, back-to-school shopping and delivers tax refund checks to taxpayers statewide. “When budget negotiations began this spring, I vowed to move Illinois toward fiscal stability,” Sims said. “By working with other budget leaders and taking a responsible approach, I am proud to say that we’ve put Illinois on a path to fiscal success and are now able to return taxpayers’ their hard earned money.” The plan, outlined Friday, seeks to address inflation and the rising prices at the pump. The plan will suspend the 1% state grocery tax and the state’s portion of the gas tax increase for six months. Parents will see additional relief with a suspension of the state sales tax on clothing, shoes and school supplies from Aug. 5 to Aug. 14 as they go back-to-school shopping. The relief plan would directly deliver refund checks valued at $100 per person and $50 per child to state taxpayers making $250,000 individually or $200 for joint taxpayers up to $500,000 – sending money to 97% of taxpayers. A household of four would see a $300 check. Taxpayers could also see an additional $300 property tax relief check – a proposal mirrored after Governor JB Pritzker’s budget proposal. “The pandemic recession has taken a major financial toll on families across the state,” Sims said. “Our plan allows taxpayers the relief they need to help them address the higher prices families are facing. With the Pay it Forward Plan, we’re going to drive down skyrocketing gas and grocery costs and give people some needed relief.” The comprehensive proposal also includes expanded economic aid for lower-income workers and increased tax credits for teachers and volunteer first responders. Senator Sims is working with his colleagues to vote on the measure – Senate Bill 1150 – Prior to April 8th adjournment.
SENATOR JONES MEASURES TO CHANGE SPEEDING IN PARKS THE SAME FINE AS A SCHOOL ZONE To keep children safe from reckless drivers, State Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) passed legislation to make speeding in park zones an equivalent punishment to speeding in school zones. “Parents should have the peace of mind that when their student is at school or at the park playing or running around with friends that they’re safe from reckless drivers,” Jones said. “When children are outside, drivers must be cautious and careful behind the wheel.” House Bill 5328 would make speeding in a park zone the same as speeding in a school zone. Additionally, it clarifies that school zone speed limits apply to local, county and state roadways. “Please drive safely and responsibly when you are driving around schools or parks,” Jones said. “Keeping our kids safe from reckless drivers is commonsense.” House Bill 5328 passed the Senate and will move to the governor’s office for further action.
MARTWICK STANDS IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SAFETY PACKAGE THAT ADDRESSES LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDS A legislative package intending to provide greater support for law enforcement agencies ranging from mental health support, to hiring and retaining officers and the purchase of body cameras was unveiled at a press conference Monday with strong support from State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago). “I am proud to join my colleagues in support of this legislative package to show that we are working to address the practical concerns of law enforcement agencies across the state,” Martwick said. “From clarifying when officers can use body cameras to getting more support for mental health issues in jails and helping local agencies recruit more highly qualified officers, Illinois is continuing to show up for our hardworking officers.” House Bill 3863 creates the Law Enforcement Recruitment and Retention Fund to help law enforcement agencies hire and retain qualified law enforcement officers. House Bill 3893 would extend the Jan. 1, 2023 sunset date for allowing officers to use a device to record a conversation during an investigation. House Bill 4364 would create the Mental Health and Substance Use Prevention Fund to allow the Department of Human Services to fund grants to offer mental health and substance use prevention to people who are incarcerated and individuals in county jails or people who have been recently discharged. To address disparities in pay across the justice system, House Bill 4228 would require that County Sheriffs are paid 80% of the salary of a State’s Attorney. House Bill 4608 would allow body camera grant funds to be used for data storage costs. It would also allow officers to flag video if they believe it may have evidentiary value. The measure also clarifies when an officer does not have to have a camera turned on, such as in training or only in the presence of other officers. Martwick joined the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, the Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois State Police to express support for the package. He plans to work with his colleagues in the Senate to advance the package before the scheduled April 8 adjournment.

Quinton and Terran Lewis founded Herb’N Eden in 2015 to bring natural skincare products to the forefront of the market. Mercantile Venture Capital led the investment with participation from The Core Venture Studio. This new funding will amplify their efforts, enabling them to efficiently meet the demands of their rapidly growing clientele without sacrificing what makes them so successful: their all-natural therapeutic products. “Through our tremendous growth, we still maintained the same formula and process of making our products,” says Terran Lewis. “We know Black-owned businesses face challenges around funding and equitable partnerships. For us, it was important we remain the majority owners and stay faithful to the tried-and-true process our supporters count on us for.” Before receiving this funding, Herb’N Eden received remarkable success through grassroots efforts such as in-house marketing, hiring local workers for their warehouse and store, and maintaining the direction of the product development. CDPH Warns Chicagoans Not to Serve or Eat Potentially Contaminated Raw Oysters from Canada
T:6"
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is recommending that Chicagoans not eat raw oysters from a specific area in British Columbia, Canada, after they were linked to an outbreak of norovirus. The FDA has also issued an advisory to restaurants and retailers not to serve or sell potentially contaminated raw oysters and has confirmed that potentially contaminated raw oysters were distributed to restaurants and retailers in 13 states, including Illinois . Restaurants and retailers should not serve raw oysters harvested from the BC 14-8 or 14-15 regions within Baynes Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Oysters should be disposed of by throwing them in the garbage or returning to their distributor for destruction. Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, and fever. Symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after eating contaminated food and resolve within 1 to 3 days. Young children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness. For more information about Norovirus, go to the CDC website here. To protect yourself and others from norovirus: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water often. Carefully wash fruits and vegetables before preparing and eating them. Cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly before eating them. Do not prepare food or care for others when you are sick, and for at least two days after symptoms stop. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based household cleaner. Wash contaminated laundry thoroughly. CDPH is monitoring closely for additional reports of illness. If you experienced diarrheal illness after consuming oysters, contact the Chicago Department of Public Health by calling 312-746-SICK (7425) or emailing outbreak@cityofchicago.org to file a suspected food poisoning complaint.

Clever Storage Ideas for Small Spaces
(Family Features) No matter how cramped and cluttered your living space may be, you can almost
always find a spot or two for extra storage. It’s often just a matter of getting creative and utilizing a few clever solutions. Consider these simple ideas to create some extra space in oft-used rooms: Kitchen • Metal rods with hanging hooks can create storage space on your blank walls. Use them to hang coffee cups, cooking utensils, dish towels or pots and pans. • Magnetic strips mounted on the wall or the inside of a cabinet door can be a simple way to hang knives and free up counter space normally taken up by a knife block. • If your countertop is cluttered with small spice containers and oil bottles, elevate them with a decorative cake stand. Place small jars below and top with pretty decanters and additional spices. • If you’re using prime cabinet space for items you only use once a year, such as holiday cake pans or a big serving bowl you pull out for parties, consider storing them in the attic or a closet instead. Bathroom • Instead of hanging just one towel bar on the back of the bathroom door, hang multiple to maximize your drying space. • Most modern cabinetry has adjustable shelving. If you haven’t customized the heights of your shelving to accommodate different sized bottles and containers, give it a try. • A three-tiered fruit basket might seem perfect for the kitchen, but it’s also a handy way to store bathroom essentials right beside the sink. • Flour and sugar canisters can also be repur-
posed in the bathroom to keep makeup, toiletries, cleaning supplies and soaps contained. Make sure to buy bins that stack easily. Bedroom • Nix those nightstands and hang small shelves on either side of the bed. This cuts down on the clutter you can keep and makes cleaning underneath a breeze. • Rolling bins that fit under the bed are perfect for storing linens, out-of-sea-

son clothing and children’s toys. They’re also the perfect way to slide building block projects out of sight without destroying your child’s latest masterpiece. • Closets with a single hanging rod are one of the biggest space-wasters in the bedroom. Double their storage capacity by hanging a second rod or shelf below shorter jackets and shirts. Find more ideas to maximize your space at eLivingtoday.com. PHOTO COURTESY OF UNSPLASH
