KAZOOM FEST TO BRING MULTICULTURAL KAZOOM KIDS’ iSTORYBOOKS TO LIFE ONSTAGE KaZoom Kids Books (www.kazoomkidsbooks.com), an interactive digital publishing company dedicated to bringing greater diversity to children’s literature, recently announced KaZoom Fest, a collaboration with the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA). HSA’s youngest theater and acting students, and some of their parents, will bring three KaZoom iStorybook titles to life as three short plays complete with theatrical performances, music, and choreography provided by Harlem School of the Arts’ theater, music and dance departments. The three stories are Taking the E Train and Everybody Loves Cake by Lapacazo Sandoval, and Alyssa Marissa and Her Magical Hair by Angela Williams. Both authors will attend the event and discuss their work prior to the show. Representing and immersing children of color in stories and the arts is an aim that resonates deeply with both KaZoom and Harlem School of the Arts. ASSOCIATION OF BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), an inclusive organization dedicated to eliminating disparities in cardiovascular diseases, has recently installed John M. Fontaine, MD, MBA, FACC, FHRS as its 17th President and Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH as its first woman Chair of the Board of Directors. Among other notable accomplishments, Dr. Fontaine is a Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and Director of Arrhythmia Services. He possesses an MBA in Healthcare Management and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Dr. Pegus currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU School of Medicine. She is the President of Caluent, a healthcare data analytics company, a Director of Tactile Medical (Nasdaq: TCMD), Cogentix Medical (Nasdaq: CGNT) and US Acute Care Solutions (USACS). DUCKWORTH & FAMILY WELCOME SECOND DAUGHTER INTO THE WORLD U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) became the first U.S. Senator to give birth while in office when she delivered her second daughter, Maile (pronounced MY-lee) Pearl Bowlsbey recently. “Bryan, Abigail and I couldn’t be happier to welcome little Maile Pearl as the newest addition to our family and we’re deeply honored that our good friend Senator Akaka was able to bless her name for us—his help in naming both of our daughters means he will always be with us,” said Senator Duckworth in a released statement. Though millions of American women have become mothers while continuing their careers, Senator Duckworth is one of only 10 women since our nation’s founding who have given birth while serving in Congress.

he University of Chicago Office of Civic Engagement recently announced the winners of their new Urban America Forward Catalyst Grant program that awards a $35,000 grant to two racial justice or social justice non-profit organizations. The two grant winners are Sunshine Enterprises and the Chicago Jobs Council. The Catalyst Grant is part of the Urban America Forward conference hosted by the University of Chicago. The conference was designed to bring policymakers, practitioners, scholars, academics, and community leaders together to identify the challenges that urban communities currently face and the best practices and solutions to help address those challenges, according to Derek Douglas, vice president for civic engagement and external affairs at the University of Chicago. “The idea behind the Catalyst Grant was to provide some seed funding to organizations that were part of the dialogue at the Urban America Forward conference to help catalyze work that they are doing to address economic mobility and economic inclusion targeting low-income communities,” said Douglas. “These are not huge grants but they are important grants.” The Chicago Jobs Council is a non-profit organization that works to move people out of poverty through employment with the help of their member organizations, according to Carrie Thomas, executive director of the Chicago Jobs Council. www.thechicagocitizen.com
The Chicago Jobs Council will use the Catalyst Grant money to expand their research and strategic work of their Transit Table coalition that addresses how a lack of transportation can create a barrier to employment that many people experience, according to a press release from the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago. “This grant is going to support the work of our Transit Table. We want to expand the Transit Table to include more non-traditional partners and some job seekers to participate in problem-solving and advocacy work. We also want to do more communications related work to get the word out about these knotty transportation problems and how they are directly related to employment outcomes for people,” said Thomas. The other grant recipient, Sunshine Enterprises, is an organization that supports small business and entrepreneurs on the south and west sides of Chicago. Their money will be used to continue empowering local entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and transform their under-served communities, according to a press release from the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago. “Our neighborhoods have so many really wonderful, creative folks who have dreams to build their businesses locally,” said Joel Hamernick, executive director of Sunshine Enterprises. “We are just delighted, you can’t help but be inspired by our entrepreneurs and their dreams and ideas and to have an opportunity to get behind peoples dreams like this is just really a privilege.” For more information on Sunshine Enterprises visit www. sunshineenterprises.com, and for more information on the Chicago Jobs Council visit www.cjc.net.

All Girls STEM School Hosts Annual Girl Power Luncheon BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
T
he Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS) recently hosted their annual Girl Power Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago. The event celebrated the accomplishments of YWLCS students and featured a panel discussion to accentuate the need for more women in government, STEM fields, and the workplace in general. The YWLCS was founded in 1999 and is the only all-girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) charter school in Chicago. There are nearly 350 young women who attend YWLCS and the school boasts a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate, according to a press release from the YWLCS. “It was my goal when I came here to revitalize our mission which says that we inspire urban girls to engage in rigorous college preparatory learning in a small school environment that focuses on Science Technology and Math,” said Dr. Vanesa ScottThompson, principal of YWLCS. Golder, a founding board member of Golden Apple, honors exemplary performance in school leadership by a principal or head of school from the Chicagoland area. Students, community members/parents and colleagues nominate school leaders who have demonstrated remarkable commitment, passion, and results. This is the fifth year that a school leader has been recognized with the Golder Leadership Award. Jones was surprised with the award during a school assembly. Jones is being recognized for his exceptional leadership to over 150 staff members and approximately 1800 students in grades 7-12,
according to a Golden Apple press release. Despite the challenges of a school with almost 60 percent of its students at poverty level, Kenwood Academy High School has seen impressive achievements since Jones arrived in 2012. In collaboration with teachers and counselors, Jones’s team dramatically improved the graduation rates, and led a college matriculation program that resulted in a significantly larger college-going population. As a leading indicator of future graduation rates, the freshman on-track measure shows that the graduation rate will likely continue to climb in future years. Jones and his team also improved student attendance and redesigned the instructional program that resulted in a very high percentage of students testing well on the SAT. Additionally, he led Kenwood to reach the highest School Quality Rating Performance of Level 1+. Jones is keenly aware of student

progress and makes every effort to help them excel. When students receive either a “D” or “F” in a course, a mandatory meeting takes place with the student, his/her parent(s) and Jones to review the situation and discuss improvements. Jones also fosters a strong sense of community at Kenwood, according to a Golden Apple press release. While college readiness is an important message that he shares with teachers and students at Kenwood, he also works closely with their parents during Saturday meetings to help them understand the college application process. He strongly supports students’ passions and interests. Another student, Kiarra Pearson, is a junior at YWLCS and has already been working with her mentor Anne Pramaggiore, the CEO of ComEd. “Since I met Anne she has been in my ear helping me to prepare for college and trying to get me into different programs to make my resume look really nice,” said Pearson. “I want to come out of my senior year with straight A’s so I can get as much money as I possibly can to go to college.” Both girls are thankful for what they have learned from their mentors and the impact that YWLCS has had on their futures. “Young Women’s has really impacted my life to be more socially aware of what goes on around me and be aware that people do look at me and see what I’m doing,” said Kennedy.

Darielle Kennedy, 2018 valedictorian of YWLCS, has been working with her mentor Tammera Holmes, president and CEO of AeroStar Corporation, all year to prepare for college. Originally, Kennedy planned to pursue a career in aerospace engineering like Holmes, but after
