REPS. ROBIN KELLY AND MIKE SIMPSON INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN REAUTHORIZATION OF ACTION FOR DENTAL HEALTH ACT
WASHINGTON, D.C – Reps. Robin Kelly and Mike Simpson introduced the bipartisan Action for Dental Health Act for reauthorization. The legislation is co-authored by Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust Chair, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL), and Congressman and dentist Mike Simpson (R-ID). The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House and signed into law in 2018 and is due for reauthorization this year.
This legislation directs federal support to organizations that provide oral health care to underserved populations, especially seniors, children and those living in rural and urban communities. The bill strengthens the impact of existing resources that provide oral healthcare to populations that may lack sufficient access.
The legislation will continue to reduce the number of oral health emergency room visits, by increasing access to holistic, preventative dental care.
“I am proud to lead this bipartisan effort with Congressman Simpson for a second time to ensure that more Americans can access the oral health care that they need,” said Rep. Kelly (IL-02). “Oral health care is a critical part of our overall health, and preventative dental care can reduce costs for families and help so many people live better lives.”
“This reauthorization is an important step in addressing barriers to oral health care services. The more we can address early diagnosis, intervention, and preventative dental treatments, the better off our patients and our health care system will be. As co-chair of the Congressional Oral Health Caucus, I am pleased to reintroduce this bill and look forward to its progress in Congress,” said Simpson.
REP. KELLY CELEBRATES GROUNDBREAKING OF DIXMOOR WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
Dixmoor, Ill. -- Congresswoman Kelly was joined by Congressman Jonathan Jackson, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Village of Dixmoor to break ground on a new water main project. Largely supported by federal funds secured, in-part by Rep. Kelly, Dixmoor’s new water main would preserve and protect the village’s critical water supply.
Dixmoor’s water main infrastructure project is planned to build a 3,700 ft 12-inch water main, which would stretch from Seeley Avenue, cross south under the I-57 overpass, and east onto 13th St. in Dixmoor. The project would also cap five other water mains in the area to help prevent future water main breaks.
Congresswoman Kelly celebrated the over $2M she helped secure for the project, which included funds from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the most significant commitment to public infrastructure the United States has made in decades.
“These investments are the very foundation of how we work, learn, and go about our daily lives,” said Rep. Kelly. “I have been fighting in Congress for the infrastructure needs of Dixmoor and all communities across Illinois’ Second Congressional District – and I’m committed to continuing this critical work.”
Father-Daughter Duo open store in Hyde Park

“When you come into this store, and to separate this store from just your typical shoe store, I feel like it’s more homey. You should feel more comfortable coming in here to spend your money with us. When you come in, we’re attentive, we want to help you find the shoe for you, not just any shoe,” Jamee Denman said.
Sneakerville 88 in Hyde Park has shoes that people might not be able to find at typical shoe stores. The location really caters to young people with its selection. Layaway is available for those high school students and college students who come into the store. Jamee Denman is aware that some young people might not have all the money to purchase shoes that day. She wants the young people to know they can attain the nice shoes they see in the store. The goal is to be more attainable and Jamee wants to work with them.
“I know how it feels to be in a CPS school and see all of the Jordans and stuff, that’s something that’s big in school. To have on the newest pair of shoes is something that’s super important to students these days. That’s something I want them to still be able to enjoy, regardless of whether they have the funds or they don’t,” Jamee Denman said.
James Denman’s first business was named after his daughter, Jamee’s Italian Beef & Pizza. After that, he opened Harold’s Chicken on 35th and Indiana. In 2019, he opened Harold’s Chicken 88 Sports Bar, located at 1450 S. Michigan Ave. James Denman wanted Jamee to get an opportunity to see what it takes to run a business. He wanted to give her a head start, with the hope she will be able to pass the businesses down.
Since she was a kid, Jamee was hands on with the businesses. Now that she is older, she can be more hands on and step in and be the face. She is aware that father-daughter entrepreneurs is not something that you see often.
James Denman said 88 represents good luck and he graduated from high school in 1988. So, all of the businesses have 88 in their name.
James Denman said owning businesses is not easy but if it is someone’s goal, they can accomplish it, it takes a lot of hard work, drive and patience. He wants people to know: Things don’t come overnight.
James Denman recalled telling people years prior to owning his first Harold’s Chicken that it was something he wanted to do. He also realized that 20 years ago, he wanted to own sneaker stores and now he owns them with his daughter. “Whatever it is that you want, put it out in the world, and if you really work hard for it, you’ll get it,” he said.
Jamee Denman wants those who are entrepreneurs to keep going. She has started a few businesses and said being consistent is hard when things aren’t turning out the way a person might expect. At 26, she is just beginning and does see herself going further with it. She has a vision for franchise locations of Sneakerville 88 and Sneaker Ville 88 in other states.
“We’re here for the community. We’re a big part of the community and we’re looking forward to enjoying Hyde Park and being a part of Hyde Park for years to come,” James said. Sneakerville 88 is located at 5241 S. Harper Ave. The website is sneakerville88.myshopify.com.

More than 150 Teachers Join Chicago Public Schools After Completing Rigorous Teacher Residency Program
CHICAGO – On Monday, Monday, June 12, Mayor Brandon Johnson, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez, and Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates honored 156 new resident teachers who will join classrooms next fall through an innovative CPS program that helps current employees or career changers obtain the credentials and training to become CPS teachers.
“Congratulations to our newest resident teachers and welcome to the amazing community of educators we have here in the city of Chicago,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Building a stronger and more equitable city starts in our schools, and programs like this are an important part of that work. I’m proud to recognize this diverse group of new teachers today and look forward to seeing their positive impact on our students, schools, and communities.”
The CPS Teacher Residency,
launched in 2017, is a full-time, paid, teacher training program that offers a bridge to teaching — both for career changers who wish to pursue a new career in education as well as paraprofessionals who work in classroom support roles and want to become full-time teachers leading a classroom.
The 2022-23 cohort of 156 resident teachers who completed the Teacher Residency program represent the largest cohort since the program’s launch in 2017. This year, 74 percent of the residents are Black or Latinx. This cohort is also focused on filling high-need positions, with 80 percent of this year’s residents eligible to teach special education, 72 percent eligible to teach early childhood education and 53 percent eligible to teach bilingual education. The District anticipates the Teacher Residency program will grow to more than 200 candidates next year.
“I am so pleased to welcome this diverse cohort of new resident teachers to our schools,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “When our students see teachers and school leaders that look like them and are part of their community, it makes a difference for those students socially, emotionally, mentally and academically. My sincerest appreciation to our newest resident teachers on their dedication and commitment to our students and our schools.”
Speakers at tonight’s ceremony at the Chicago Cultural Center also included Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy Principal Kamilah Hampton and Giovanny Navarro Aguilar, who recently completed his residency at Wentworth Elementary School in Englewood and accepted a position at Finkle Elementary School in the Pilsen neighborhood, where he will be a special education teacher.
“Programs like CPS Teacher Residency increase access and equity for members of our community,” said Principal Hampton. “Having a teacher resident in my building that I can hire after their residency helped me not only fill high need positions, but also ensured I had the best candidate to support our students and school community.”
How the Residency Program Works
Residents begin the higher education coursework in the summer before their first year in the classroom.
CAN TV...
The residents are paired in the classroom with mentor teachers during their first year, for hands-on experience and training. As CPS (Talent Office) employees, they earn salaries and health benefits during this residency.
After demonstrating effectiveness during their training, residents receive support in finding a full-time position for their second year, during which they lead their own classrooms, at a significant increase in pay.
Following program completion and a commitment to work at CPS for at least two additional years, residents are hired as full-time CPS teachers and receive another pay increase.
A Growing Network of Diverse, Talented Teachers
Chicago Public Schools renewed its commitment to recruiting and retaining excellent educators in the Three-Year Blueprint, which are supported by CPS’ Teach Chicago program, a comprehensive initiative to recruit, support and retain highly-qualified, diverse teachers specifically for high-need subject areas (such as special education and bilingual teaching) and hard-to-staff schools, promoting equity across the district. The CPS Teacher Residency is an example of one Teach Chicago program helping to move the needle on staffing challenges.
The CPS Teacher Residency has grown steadily since 2017, when it began with a pilot cohort of 12 teachers-in-training and grew to 156 teachers this year. The growth is expected to continue as the District continues its focus on recruitment of educators in high-needs subject areas. The program currently allows participants to focus on several subject areas, including early childhood education, special education, bilingual education, and dance, and for the first time this year – theater.
Key supporters of the CPS Teacher Residency are the Joyce Foundation, the Crown Family Philanthropies, and the National Center for Teacher Residencies. Teach Chicago is also supported by the Crown Family Philanthropies and the Joyce Foundation, with additional support provided by the U.S. Department of Education.

CAN TV also launched its YouthVoice Digital Literacy & Storytelling Institute, which aims to narrow the generational gap between 16-24 yearolds and traditional media by amplifying youth voices that have traditionally been excluded from conventional media.

HUNTER’S CHILD WELFARE MEASURE BECOMES LAW
To further reinforce the goals of the Department of Children and Family Services, State Senator Mattie Hunter’s legislation that removes obsolete language from the Children and Family Services Act was signed into law.
“DCFS services are meant to be temporary, and our focus should remain on reuniting children with their families or placing them in safe, permanent homes,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “This law makes these goals clear and ensures the language within this important act is current and compliant.”
Amending the Children and Family Services Act, the new law provides that DCFS is responsible for placing children in permanent family homes through guardianship or adoption — rather than adoptive homes — when restoration to the biological family is not safe, possible or appropriate. The measure clarifies DCFS’ responsibility for children or youth whose jurisdiction could not be clearly named as under one individual agency, or whose services may be provided by multiple agencies, and reaffirms that welfare services offered by DCFS are intended to be temporary until safe reunification or timely and permanent placement can be achieved.
Additionally, the measure removes outdated language, including a provision requiring DCFS to establish the Governor’s Youth Services Initiative, which was disbanded in 2019. The elimination of this language brings the Children and Family Services Act in compliance with changes implemented by the Reproductive Health Act.
“While this may seem like a minor change, this legislation is vital in enabling DCFS to effectively provide children the care and support they need and deserve,” Hunter added.
House Bill 3705 was signed into law June 9 and will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024.
FOSTER LEADS CALL TO ALLOW DREAMERS TO SERVE IN MILITARY
Recently, Congressman Bill Foster (DIL) led eight of his Democratic colleagues in introducing a resolution that calls on the Secretary of Defense to authorize Dreamers to serve in the armed services.
“For many Dreamers, the United States is the only home they have ever known. Every American deserves the right to serve their country through military service, and Dreamers should be no exception,” said Foster. “Allowing our Dreamers to enlist and serve in the military would make sure our armed forces have some of the best and brightest young minds in their ranks. I strongly encourage the Secretary of Defense to review the current policy and authorize these patriotic individuals to serve their country.”
Original cosponsors of the resolution include Mark Takano (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Donald Norcross (D-NJ), Donald M. Payne Jr. (D-NJ), Dina Titus (D-NV), James P. McGovern (D-MA), Adriano Espaillat (DNY), and Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY).

Group Black and Nielsen Uncover That Black Creators Deliver More Media Value Than Their Non-Black Counterparts in Key Categories
NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- Group Black, a modern media company with the largest collective of Black-owned media, and Nielsen, a global leader in audience measurement, data and analytics, announced that they will be unveiling a first of its kind Black Creator Impact Report. Comparing Black creators to their non-black counterparts, this report takes a deep dive into the economic and cultural impact of Black creators based on their influence on social media platforms including Instagram, Tiktok, Youtube and Twitter.
Using Nielsen InfluenceScope, the report analyzed creators based on three metrics: follower growth, follower interaction and media value. Media value is a proprietary Nielsen metric to determine a monetary value for digital and social content, based on the audience’s exposure and engagement. The study focuses on creators in three categories: fashion, lifestyle and gaming.
Steve Evans. PRNewsfoto/ Smithfield Foods, Inc.
The study found that Black creators generate a higher media value compared to non-Black creators in fashion, lifestyle and gaming. Black creators in the lifestyle category performed 10.5 times better than their non-Black counterparts, 6.7 times better in gaming and eSports, and 1.6 times better in fashion..
In addition to generating a higher media value, Black creators also saw higher levels of follower growth and interaction rates between 2020 to 2022. In the lifestyle category, which make up 40% of paid advertising opportunities, they outperform non-Black creators by 10.5 times. Even though diverse Black creators possess immense cultural influence and credibility, the influencer pay gap between Black creators and their white counterparts is nearly 35%.
“For too long Black creators haven’t had access to the same opportunities as their non-Black counterparts due to the myth that they were unable to deliver the same ROI as other creators in the industry, “ says Kerel Cooper, President of Advertising at Group Black. “With our Black Creator Impact Report, we are delivering concrete proof of the opposite. Black creators have the ability to deliver exponential growth for brands—now brands must provide the opportunities.”
“Black America influences both content and brand engagement as consumers of media and creators of trends,” says Charlene Polite Corley, VP, Diverse Insights and Partnerships at Nielsen. “By investing in Black influencers, brands can amplify their authentic voices—driving deeper engagement with Black communities and other consumers who follow their lead.”

African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Announces $3.8M in 2023 Grants
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In recognition of Juneteenth, the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, announced $3.8 million in grant funding to protect and preserve 40 sites representing African American history. With more than $95 million raised, the Action Fund is the largest resource dedicated to the preservation of African American historic places.
“The Action Fund’s investment in and celebration of 40 historic African American places illustrates our belief that historic preservation plays an important role in American society,” said Brent Leggs, executive director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and senior vice president, National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The history embodied in these places is emblematic of generational aspirations for freedom, the pursuit of education, a need for beauty and architecture, and joys of social life and community bonds. That’s why the Action Fund believes all Americans must see themselves and our shared history in this year’s grantee list if we are to create a culturally conscious nation.”
Since 2017, the Action Fund has received an unprecedented total of 5,638 funding proposals requesting $655 million. The program has supported 242 grantee projects through its investment of $20M.
“The Action Fund and the local preservationists it supports across the nation are leading crucial work to protect and promote undervalued places and stories that are an essential part of our shared American history,” said Justin Garrett Moore, program officer for the Humanities in Place program at the Mellon Foundation. “Grants supporting projects
designed by Black architects and at HBCUs will better acknowledge the power and creativity of those who have shaped and stewarded spaces and experiences that build more just communities. By elevating these places through much-needed organizational capacity, technical assistance, capital funding, and programming, these projects will help tell a fuller American story.”
New to this year’s list is a targeted focus on conserving modernist structures designed by Black architects. In its first grant round, eight historic structures will receive $1.2M to help advance long-term preservation planning. This funding is part of the Conserving Black Modernism partnership led by the Action Fund with support from the Getty Foundation.
“Our understanding of modernism in the United States will remain incomplete until we recognize the extraordinary contributions of Black architects and designers, whose buildings speak to the experience of Black communities in this era,” said Joan Weinstein, director of the Getty Foundation. “These grants will preserve important sites, deliver training to the people who care for them, and reveal new stories for all of us about the talents and resiliency of Black architects in twentieth century America.”
The preservation of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) across the country is also a focus of this year’s grant announcement. Through the Action Fund’s HBCU Cultural Heritage Stewardship Initiative , six HBCUs will receive nearly $700,000 funding to ensure the protection of their cultural assets.
The Action Fund’s 2023 list of grantees’
expand the American story by including sites like: Idlewild’s Hotel Casa Blanca (MI), Calfee Training School (VA), Watts Happening Cultural Center (CA), McAfee Swimming Pool (KS), Dew Drop Inn (LA) and more.
As our nation honors Emancipation and Juneteenth, the Action Fund asks the public to learn more about these sites, consider donating to their specific fundraising needs and make certain the full American story is told.
Together, we can honor the contributions of those who came before us while ensuring that future generations can connect with their roots, draw inspiration and lessons from the past, and appreciate the cultural, architectural, and social legacies of the world they will inhabit.
With amounts ranging from $50K to $150K, Action Fund grants support preservation efforts across four categories:
Building Capital: Supporting the restoration and rehabilitation of cultural assets important to Black history
Increasing Organizational Capacity: Providing leadership staff positions within nonprofits stewarding Black heritage sites
Project Planning and Development: Funding planning activities tied to the development of preservation plans, feasibility studies, and fundraising
Programming and Education: Advancing storytelling through public education and creative interpretation

Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular Disease
MISSION, Kan., PRNewswire -- (Family Features) Now, more than three years from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impacts can be seen more clearly.
For example, the rise in the number of cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, represents the largest single-year increase in CVD deaths since 2015 and topped the previous high recorded in 2003, according to the latest available data from the Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics –2023 Update from the American Heart Association.
The biggest increases in CVD-related deaths were seen among Asian, Black and Hispanic people, populations most impacted in the early days of the pandemic and brought into focus by increasing structural and societal disparities.
“We know COVID-19 took a tremendous toll and preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show there was a substantial increase in the loss of lives from all causes since the start of the pandemic,” said Michelle A. Albert, M.D., M.P.H.,
FAHA, American Heart Association volunteer president, who is also the Walter A. Haas-Lucie Stern Endowed Chair in Cardiology, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and admissions dean for UCSF Medical School. “That this likely translated to an increase in overall cardiovascular deaths, while disheartening, is not surprising. In fact, the Association predicted this trend, which is now official.
“COVID-19 has both direct and indirect
impacts on cardiovascular health. As we learned, the virus is associated with new clotting and inflammation. We also know many people who had new or existing heart disease and stroke symptoms were reluctant to seek medical care, particularly in the early days of the pandemic. This resulted in people presenting with more advanced stages of cardiovascular conditions and needing more acute or urgent treatment for what may have been manageable chronic conditions. Sadly, this appears to have cost many their lives.”
According to Albert, who also is the director of the CeNter for the StUdy of AdveRsiTy and CardiovascUlaR DiseasE (NURTURE Center) at UCSF and a leader in health equity and adversity research, the larger increases in the number of coronary heart disease deaths among Asian, Black and Hispanic adults appear to correlate with the people most often infected with COVID-19.
“People from communities of color were among those more highly impacted, especially early on, often due to a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and obesity,” Albert said. “Additionally, there are socioeconomic considerations, as well as the ongoing impact of structural racism on multiple factors, including limiting the ability to access quality health care.”

New research from the Stowers Institute reveals the start of Huntington’s disease
KANSAS CITY, Mo., PRNewswire -- Devastating neurodegenerative diseases like Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s are all associated with protein deposits in the brain, known as amyloid. Despite extensive research investment into the cause and toxicity of amyloids, deciphering the first step in formation along with effective therapies has remained elusive.
For the first time, scientists at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research have uncovered the structure of the first step in amyloid formation, called the nucleus, for Huntington’s disease. The study published in eLife on June 13, 2023, from the lab of Associate Investigator Randal Halfmann, Ph.D., proposes a new, radical method for treating not only Huntington’s but potentially dozens of other amyloid-associated diseases—preventing the initial, rate-limiting step from occurring.
Co-first authors Tej Kandola, Ph.D., and Shriram Venkatesan, Ph.D., uniquely identified the structure of the amyloid nucleus for huntingtin, the protein responsible for Huntington’s disease, discovering that the nucleus forms within a single protein molecule.
Proteins are the cell’s factory workers constructed from unique sequences of 20 amino acids, their building blocks. Some proteins have repeats of one of these amino acids—glutamine (abbreviated as Q). Huntington’s and
eight other diseases, collectively called “PolyQ diseases,” occur when certain proteins have a repeat that is too long. Somehow, this causes the proteins to fold into a specific structure that starts a chain reaction that kills the cell.
A paradigm shift and potential therapeutic method
These new findings are potentially a paradigm shift for how we view amyloids. The results from this research suggest that it is the early committed steps of amyloid formation, right after the nucleus forms, that cause neuronal cell death.
Along with uncovering the key structure that begins polyQ amyloid formation, researchers found that it only formed in isolated molecules of the protein. Clumping the proteins together in cells stopped amyloids forming altogether. This is a novel therapeutic avenue the team plans to explore further in mice and brain organoids.
A new technique
A technique recently developed by the Halfmann Lab, Distributed Amphifluoric Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (DAmFRET), shows how a protein self-assembles in single cells. This method turned out to be crucial for observing the rate-limiting amyloid-forming nucleation event.
Designing and testing specific patterns of Qs enabled the team to deduce the minimum structure that could
form amyloid—a bundle of four strands each with three Qs in specific locations. This tiny crystal inside a single molecule of the protein is the first step in a chain reaction that results in disease.
In essence, this work provides a molecular model to investigate the structure of any amyloid nucleus. Additionally, the correlation between aging and amyloids suggests that this method may ultimately uncover molecular mechanisms that cause aging. The preemptive approach to eliminate or at the very least to delay nucleation provides hope for people with pathologic PolyQ proteins.

How to Protect Your Favorite Outdoor Gear
The survey found that 65% of Americans do not have a protection plan for any of their outdoor products, and 56% were not even sure they could purchase one. With American households spending hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of dollars a year on outdoor equip- ment, furniture and supplies, adding protection can be a smart idea.
Beyond purchasing protection plans, Siciliano also recommends taking steps to extend the life of your outdoor products. For example, use the proper fuel in lawn care equipment, clean your grill and cover it when it’s not in use, and apply protectant to furniture to guard against rust and sun damage. For specialty items like fire pits and patio heaters, be sure to read the instruction manuals and follow the manufacturer’s care and maintenance recommendations. Finally, at the end of the summer, store seasonal items in your garage or shed.
For more information about product protection, look for Allstate Protection Plans at your favorite retailers. You can also visit www.allstateprotectionplans.com, which features tips and resources for making the most of your outdoor products, as well as tips and advice on maintaining your home electronics and appliances. “When we take care of the outdoor items that make summer enjoyable and relaxing, we’re also protecting ourselves against the expensive repairs that can pop up every spring if we don’t,” says Siciliano. “That means more in our budgets for popsicles and lemonade.”
GREEN LIVING
(StatePoint) With warmer weather here, more and more people are spending time on their decks, patios, and in their gardens and yards using outdoor products. From grills to furniture to mowers, 88% of Americans have invested in products dedicated for outdoor use and 65% of those that have use them at least several times a week, according to an Allstate Protection Plans survey.
Unfortunately, 83% of those surveyed who own outdoor products have experienced damage to one or more of them. That damage has been more than a little expensive: Americans have spent over $44 billion repairing or replacing their outdoor products.
“It’s no surprise that the outdoor products we use so much this time of year, that make life so great during the warmer months, can be especially vulnerable to damage,” says Jason Siciliano, vice president and glob- al creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “What some people may not realize is that the same protection plans that are available for indoor furniture, electronics and major appliances are also available for outdoor products. They can be a great way to protect your investments in the great outdoors.”
It’s BBQ Season. Do You Know Where Your Beef Came From?
(StatePoint) As barbecue season heats up, you may be wondering how to square your love for Tbone steaks and spareribs with your concern for the environment. The good news? Science is delivering new, game-changing solutions to tackle the environmental footprint of the beef and livestock industries.
The Problem
Approximately 9 mil- lion dairy cows, 90 million beef cattle, 60 million swine and billions of poultry in the United States produce more than 100 times more organic waste than humans; but where human waste makes its way to a septic tank or sewage treatment plant, livestock waste is usually spread untreated on the ground as fertilizer.
While this practice has short-term agricultural benefits, it’s ultimately a major contributor to a number of environmental and health issues. Phosphorous, nitrogen (mostly as ammonia), pathogens and bacteria from manure run off the soil and pollute waterways. This nutrient runoff fuels increasingly toxic algae blooms in fresh, estuary and coastal salt waters, creating areas where most aquatic species can’t survive. What’s more, the highly mobile and volatile nitrogen from ammonia in animal waste can become airborne, a difficult and expensive to control problem that poses significant health risks to humans.
Finally, the 1.5 billion tons of manure generated in the United States annually also plays a major role in climate change. Manure emits carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, all of which are potent greenhouse gases.
New Solutions
An advanced livestock waste collection, treatment and recycling system from Bion Environmental Technologies Inc. is transforming manure from a liability to an asset. It starts with an innovative barn design that houses the livestock, collects waste, and feeds the treatment system on a continual basis. This patented technology not only provides comprehensive waste treatment that
neutralizes pathogens, bacteria and ammonia and minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, but also produces superior organic, and climate- and watersmart, fertilizers with a low carbon footprint, as well as generates clean water and renewable natural gas.
Typical beef production uses an extraordinary amount of water, particularly from crops for feed. With Bion, 30% of the waste stream is processed into recycled, clean water.
And, thanks to precise application of organic and climate-smart fertilizers produced by the system, the resulting soil is healthier with a better balance of nutrients. In short, more abundant crops are produced, less water is used and greenhouse gas emissions are
Along with environmental stewardship and resource efficiency at the forefront of the technology’s design, experts have been retained to ensure that animal accommodations, hygiene, care and feeding are all optimized for animal health and welfare. To learn more, visit bionenviro.com.
“Today’s consumers want sustainable, transparent and ‘better for you’ food,” says Bill O’Neill, Bion’s CEO. “Through innovation, we are bringing real beef to tables that is both sustainable and ethical.”
