NEWS briefly EDUCATION COVID-19 VACCINE TO BE TESTED IN UIC CLINICAL TRIAL The University of Illinois at Chicago will soon test a vaccine for COVID-19. Expected to launch July 9, the trial — a phase 3 clinical study— will test the efficacy of a vaccine developed by biotech company Moderna. “We want to see if the vaccine will prevent people from getting COVID-19 or if it will prevent people from experiencing severe illness if they do get the disease,” said Dr. Richard Novak, lead investigator of the clinical trial at UIC. UIC is expected to be the only site in Chicago selected to launch the Moderna phase 3 trial, which is being administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “UIC has a history of engaging diverse communities in our research programs and I believe our ability to reach the communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic is one of the reasons that we were selected for this clinical trial,” Novak said. “We want to test this vaccine in people who are most at risk of experiencing complications and death due to the virus.” The UIC vaccine trial will be accessible through a number of clinical locations in the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, or UI Health, including sites in Pilsen, Little Village and Hyde Park. U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RELEASES DOG ATTACK NATIONAL RANKINGS The number of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees attacked by dogs nationwide fell to 5,803 in 2019 — more than 200 fewer than in 2018 and more than 400 fewer since 2017. According to USPS Safety Awareness Program Manager Chris Johnson, technology supports carrier safety in two ways: Mobile Delivery Devices, handheld scanners used by carriers to confirm customer delivery, include a feature to indicate the presence of a dog at an individual address. And the Informed Delivery service alerts customers to mail and packages coming to their homes, allowing them to plan for the carrier’s arrival by securing dogs safely. A total of 5,803 USPS employees were attacked by dogs in 2019. The top 20 rankings comprise 30 cities, as some cities reported the same number of attacks. In 2019, Chicago, Illinois ranked third on the list with 54 attacks.

“THE ECONOMIST US PRESIDENTIAL FORECAST” FINDS THAT JOE BIDEN CURRENTLY HAS 83% CHANCE OF WINNING AMERICA’S PRESIDENCY The Economist recently launched its first-ever statistical forecast of a US presidential election, calculating that Joe Biden currently has 83% chance of winning the presidency. https://economist.com/ us2020model The model, called “The Economist US presidential forecast,” was created by The Economist’s data team with help from Andrew Gelman and Merlin Heidemanns, political scientists at Columbia University. It estimates Joe Biden’s and Donald Trump’s probabilities of winning each individual state and the election overall. To produce these figures, it combines fundamental factors, such as economic conditions, presidential popularity and the amount of time one party has been in power, with polling data at both the national and state level. The model’s projections will be updated daily until the election to reflect the latest available data. G. Elliott Morris, data journalist at The Economist, said: “Among other innovations, The Economist US presidential forecast is the first of its kind to correct for partisan bias inherent in many presidential election polls. The award is part of a partnership with The Field Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It is a continuation of the Field Foundation’s investment in racial justice visionaries and organizations addressing systemic issues in Chicago’s disinvested communities. There are 11 leaders in this year’s cohort from three different categories, which include Art, Justice, and Media & Storytelling. Each cohort received a $25,000 cash award and the organizations they are affiliated with, received $25,000 for operating cost. The Black Ensemble Theater has been an arts and cultural institution in the city of Chicago for 45 years. The theater, located on the city’s North side in Uptown, is known for “The Other Cinderella.” Taylor said the award announces that the Black Ensemble Theater “is an important element in moving our society forward in terms of leadership and it magnifies at this time, an

organization - whose mission for the last 44 years - has been to eradicate racism.” She added it puts a spotlight on the Black Ensemble Theater at a “vitally important time in our history.” Taylor said that being named a Leaders for a New Chicago cohort means that the Black Ensemble Theater’s work is necessary and that more work needs to be done, adding what is needed for a new Chicago is a transformation. “And, that’s not going to be easy. Chicago, like most major cities in America, have been racist for a long, long, long, long time, we’re still dealing with it,” she said. Taylor added the Field Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation are philanthropic organizations that have been a big part of changing the trajectory and trying to create an equitable field. “They’re ahead of the game, in not only trying to create an equitable field, but focusing on not being ashamed, or afraid to say, ‘we’re going to focus on those people who have not had the focus.’ And, that’s important. Not only is it equitable, but they realize they have some catching up to do,” she said. Majeed is part of the collective for the Floating Museum, which includes Avery R. Young, Andrew Schachman and Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford. The

first project was the Calumet Park Assembly in 2016, then they floated a barge down the Chicago River. And most recently was the Cultural Transit Assembly, using the CTA Green Line as a moving cultural destination. Majeed said the recognition is a huge thing, both in terms of him being identified as a leader and also for the organization being recognized. He said he will be sharing the money with the co-directors. “We do this as a passion project. We haven’t taken salaries from this for some time. So, I’m really excited to share my portion with my collaborators,” he said. Majeed said there are some big plans in the future. One will give the Floating Museum and other Chicago artists the opportunity to do work on an international scale. He said the group also wants a practice space. “After you float down the river, after you do installations all over the city, we always intend to work in the communities we nestle in, we actually need a little bit of rehearsal space,” he added. Majeed said the award shows that the Field Foundation has been supportive of artists and of the Floating Museum. “It’s not surprising because it’s a really smart way of supporting the cultural production in the city. So, I’ve always appreciated them for that,” he said.

Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.) joined the Black Press of America for a live interview to discuss the plight of African Americans during the coronavirus pandemic. Congresswoman Bass, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), called the pandemic a “double-punch” to African Americans. She also called out President Donald Trump for what she stated was his lack of leadership as the virus has claimed more than 100,000 lives, including as many as 40,000 black people and the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. Arbery, an African Amer-

ican Georgia resident, was shot and killed while jogging by a former law enforcement officer and his son. Floyd died after a police officer inexplicably and aggressively pressed his knee into the handcuffed Minneapolis resident’s neck. Bass also warned that Republicans led by Lindsay Graham (R-SC) are trying to get certain federal judges off the bench so that the GOP can shape the judicial branch for generations to come. She said the Trump administration’s failure to act and to lead during the pandemic has damaged America’s reputation on the world stage and the president’s obsession with former President Barack Obama is in large part because Obama was superior in every way. “The man [Trump] has

a very serious inferiority complex, I think he knows that President Barack Obama is superior to him intellectually, morally, physically, and I think that’s very troubling to him,” Bass stated. “How dare this black man be better than him. Obama’s popularity around the world is off the charts. Trump has never been able to arrive at the same standard, quality, effectiveness, honesty, moral character of Barack Obama.” During the 30-minute exclusive interview, Bass said the Black Press and local newspapers were essential, and she and the CBC continue to press for a financial set-aside for publishers. “It’s not only discussions, and it was on our priority list. It still is,” Bass said of efforts to assist struggling African American newspaper

publishers financially. “The best way to come at it is that the CBC has been calling for specific intervention in areas where COVID-19 specifically is killing black people,” Bass stated, adding that it’s a four-pronged effort. “One is testing, one is treatment, one is tracing, and one is a public education campaign,” she said. “The way we have packaged this; we think the public education campaign should provide direct resources to black newspapers, and that’s part of our plan. The Census needs to invest in our (blackowned) newspapers heavily. There’s no reason the federal government doesn’t do business with our newspapers. Of the billions of dollars they spend in advertising, some of it should be spent with our newspapers,” Bass stated.

Study Shows Significant Shift in Dining Behavior Resulting from COVID-19 As the United States begins to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers place health and safety as their main focus in making decisions on whether or not they’ll dine in restaurants, according to a new study of nearly 7,000 Americans, released recently by restaurant discovery platform Zagat. The Zagat Future of Dining online study was conducted in May and distributed in partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The results included 6,775 consumer responses. 76% of respondents reported that pre-COVID-19 they dined out 2 or more times per week. Among the Zagat Future of Dining study’s key findings were: * Health and Safety Is Paramount - 3 in 4 diners cite health and safety concerns as the biggest deterrent to dining out, far outweighing financial reasons. Outdoor seating and reduced restaurant capacity are most likely to increase comfort levels and influence return. 83% of those not immediately interested in returning to restaurants will be made more comfortable with social distancing measures and masks worn by staff. * Consumers Taking a Wait and See Approach The study clearly showed that diners miss restaurants and the entire experience of dining out, but when restaurants reopen, comfort levels vary. 2 of 3 diners are planning to wait more than a week to return to a restaurant. Of those, 93%

will wait more than 3 weeks and 20% say they’ll wait more than 3 months. * Cooking and Home Delivery Surge As expected, consuming meals at home has become a much larger part of consumers’ lives during the crisis. In terms of economic impact, 51% of people are very/somewhat likely to reduce spend on dining. Grocery shopping, along with streaming service subscriptions and contributing to investments were the areas of spending least likely to be cut. In addition, restaurant delivery continues to grow. 69% of consumers ordered delivery pre-COVID-19 growing to 88% during — a +19% increase. Of those not dining out immediately, 82% will continue to order delivery/ takeout. “Restaurants play a vital role in every neighborhood. This study serves as further evidence that COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the people, businesses, and the communities that rely so heavily on their operations,” said Chris Stang, chief executive officer, Zagat and co-founder of restaurant discovery platform, The Infatuation. “Our goal with conducting the Future of Dining study was to help understand the COVID-19 related challenges that restaurants face in hopes that the local, state and federal government will identify ways to assist the industry in returning to operation safely and rebuilding itself to best address consumers’ needs.”

Governor Signs Legislation to Expand Vote by Mail To ensure safe and active participation in the 2020 general election during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor JB Pritzker signed SB 1863 and HB 2238 into law recently to provide vote by mail (VBM) applications to all recent voters in Illinois. The legislation also expands early voting hours at permanent polling places, improves the signature verification process and makes election day a state holiday, according to a press release. “In the face of a pandemic, massive economic upheaval, and renewed calls for racial justice, it’s more important than ever that Illinoisans can hold accountable a truly representative and transparent government – and that means ensuring all eligible residents can wield their right to vote in a way that doesn’t risk their personal health,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Sending vote by mail applications to residents who have participated in recent elections will allow more people to exercise that right from the safety of their own homes and help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. I applaud Leader Kelly Burke, Senator Julie Morrison,

the House Democratic Women’s Caucus and leaders in the General Assembly for working to ensure Illinoisans can continue to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general election.” In anticipation of the continued need for social distancing measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, vote by mail may be the safest method to cast a ballot in November. Under the new law, local election offices must mail or email vote by mail ballot applications and the VBM timeline to voters who cast a ballot in the 2018 general election, the 2019 consolidated election or the 2020 general primary election, including voters who registered or changed addresses after the primary election. Voters who submit their application for a VBM ballot by October 1 will receive their VBM ballot by October 6. The legislation requires the Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE) to: • Post an application for a vote by mail ballot on its website; • Modify the online voter registration system to allow a new registrant to apply for a VBM ballot when completing the online registration;

• Provide notice to each election authority about what it must do to comply with the new law and; • Adopt emergency rules to provide reimbursement for expenses related to the 2020 general election incurred as a result of COVID-19 and the new requirements. To improve the signature verification process, the legislation raises the standard for rejecting a VBM ballot. The election authority will be required to appoint a bipartisan panel of three election judges to verify voters’ signature and the validity of the ballot. Currently, only a single election judge makes this determination. In an effort to prevent overcrowding at the polls on election day, expanding early voting hours will help ensure election authorities are able to comply with the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) safety and health guidance. Permanent branch polling places are required to be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends and holidays. The legislation permits the use of curb-side voting, in which voters can fill out the ballot outside www.citizennewspapergroup.com

of the polling place. The bill also authorizes election authorities to establish additional early voting hours for voters whom COVID-19 presents increased health risks. To further promote safety on election day, the legislation requires local election authorities to establish a central voting site where anyone who lives in the jurisdiction can vote, regardless of their precinct. Additionally, the bill makes election day a holiday for all government offices, except election authorities, k-12 schools, and post-secondary institutions governed by the State Universities Civil Service Act. The state has already established election day as a holiday for state employees. The trailer bill, HB 2238, would require collection boxes to be locked and opened only by election authorities. It also requires ISBE to establish additional guidelines for the security of these sites. “On behalf of our 1.7 million members, AARP IL commends Gov. today offers innovative solutions and timely measures that allows older Illinois residents to choose the option that best keeps them safe and healthy during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.” “Ensuring voters in Illinois can safely participate in elections is a cornerstone of our Democracy,” said Gretchen DeJaynes, Chair of the Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders Legislative Committee. “Expanding vote by mail will allow more people to vote safely and county clerks and election authorities across the state are working to implement this important legislation.” “The COVID 19 pandemic has created many challenges, but participation in the November election should not be one of them,” said Rep. Kelly Burke (D-Evergreen Park), Assistant Majority Leader. “Just as we have taken precautions to make shopping, traveling, and other everyday tasks safer, we must also take precautions and make adjustments to ensure everyone can safely exercise their right to vote.” The new laws take effect immediately.

Ultimately, P&Q received 243 nominations from 68 programs, including nearly every MBA program ranked among the world’s best. The 2020 list includes

representatives from the most prestigious programs, including Stanford, Wharton, MIT, INSEAD, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and London Business School. By gender, the Best & Brightest were an even 50-50 even split, with 38 students hailing from outside the United States. This year, McKinsey & Company hired the largest number of Best & Brightest MBAs with nine, followed by Microsoft and Amazon with five each. The “Best & Brightest MBAs” is the second of a four-part series recognizing the world’s top business students. As the number of those living with dementia grows, experts offer advice on how to be a compassionate caregiver StatePoint - Dementia can be devastating for the people who live with it and their family members, and it’s a diagnosis more Americans will face as the U.S. population ages. The National Football League’s social justice initiative has continued to inspire change in underserved communities, including a $250 million commitment to bring awareness, dialogue, and a renewed direction to the conversation of racial and social inequality. On Thursday, June 11, officials revealed exclusively to Black Press USA, that the commitment includes dedicated financial resources from the league, clubs, and players to nonprofits. The commitment is also a league-wide amplification of inspiring stories of players making differences in their communities and society and deploying public policy and government affairs resources at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2019 season, NFL teams participated in or hosted more than 500 social justice events. Since 2017, teams have contributed $44 million from sources including social justice grants approved by the league’s players and owner’s workgroup; the NFL Foundation matching grants; an ongoing financial commitment to the Player’s Coalition; and as part of 32 teams’ social justice matching funds. “What inspired [the NFL] is the players lending their voices, their work, to issues of social injustice and racial injustice,” stated Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility and community relations. “This work didn’t start yesterday. Around 2016 and 2017, Colin Kaepernick and other players raised their voices and protested and started a movement which then inspired the NFL and our ownership to launch our Social Justice Initiatives.” As a result of those efforts, continued discussions and dialogue, Isaacson said the NFL prioritized four key areas: education, economic

advancement, criminal justice reform, and community and police relations. Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback famously took a knee during the playing of the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice. However, the Super Bowl quarterback’s protest was widely misconstrued and condemned by many, and teams have failed to sign the former star. In the wake of continued police violence against African Americans and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the NFL recently issued an apology for failing to understand the scope of the injustice African Americans have faced. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been watching what’s going on, and there have been tons of discussions about what else we can do, how can we make it clear that this is an authentic and long-term commitment from the NFL,” Isaacson told Black Press USA. “That commitment is a standard $250 million over 10 years,” she stated. Isaacson noted that the league’s 100-year history hasn’t just been about football. “We’d be nowhere without our fans, and nowhere without our players and the communities that invest in us,” she pronounced. “We’ve always been about investing in our communities, and a lot of that investment has been in underserved communities, Black communities, and communities of color. Whether it be on cancerrelated work, health and wellness, physical activities, or domestic violence. What the NFL players have brought to the forefront over the past couple of years have been the importance of bringing community and law enforcement together. We’ve put our resources, money, and time into education and awareness. The NFL has stood for communities and giving back to communities, and particularly underresourced and underfunded communities.”

But due to COVID-19, most local news publications are losing money, fast. Advertising has plummeted during the crisis and readers aren’t subscribing fast enough to fill the void. This has led to thousands of local reporters being laid off. Just as our society faces numerous, urgent challenges. Millions of people are in danger of losing access to the authoritative local

information they need to stay informed. That’s why the Local Media Association and the Local Media Consortium are working with local news providers to build a strong future for local journalism. And that’s why our long-time partner Google is purchasing ads like this in local publications across the country, as well as providing a Relief Fund to help struggling local news outlets. But those actions alone aren’t enough.
