During summer months, young people who might rely on school to receive meals often have to look for other options in order to get healthy meals. With this in mind, the Obama Foundation partnered with the Shah Family Foundation, to bring a pilot program to Chicago that will feed healthy, culturally relevant food to young people. briefly CHICAGO HOSPITALITY & BUSINESS LEADERS RALLY TO REIGNITE TRAVEL TO CITY AND REGION CHICAGO – The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) joined hospitality and business leaders from Choose Chicago, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, Oxford Hotels and Resorts and LondonHouse Chicago on Wednesday, July 13, to discuss reigniting travel and tourism to the Chicago area. Due to pandemic-related travel reductions in 2020 and 2021, Illinois and Chicago hotels lost more than $5.4 billion in room revenue, resulting in a drop of more than $1 billion in state and local tax revenue. Travel is booming this summer, however, with nearly seven in ten Americans (69%) planning to travel this summer and 60% saying they are likely to take more vacations this year compared to 2020-21, according to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and commissioned by AHLA. Another national survey shows that 77% of business travelers say it is more important than ever to bring back business travel. The same survey showed nearly two-thirds of business travelers said increased reliance on virtual work during the pandemic negatively impacted both productivity (64%) and workplace culture (65%). Speakers at the event discussed recent data and opinion research underscoring optimism for reigniting travel to the Chicago region as well as new travel trends and opportunities to attract more travelers to the area. The Wednesday, July 13, event is one in a series of “Reigniting Travel” events AHLA is hosting in major cities across the nation in conjunction with its Hospitality is Working campaign.
GOVERNOR PRITZKER APPOINTS HEALTH POLICY EXPERT DR. SAMEER VOHRA TO LEAD ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH SPRINGFIELD — Governor JB Pritzker has appointed Dr. Sameer Vohra, a distinguished pediatrician and healthcare policy expert, to lead the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) beginning August 1. Dr. Vohra, the Founding Chair of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s (SIU-SOM) Department of Population Science and Policy, follows Dr. Ngozi Ezike, who stepped down in March after leading IDPH and the State of Illinois through the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Vohra is a general pediatrician who holds degrees in law and public policy. He is a cross-disciplinary leader in state and national health policy formulation, and his recent focus has been on improving health outcomes in Central and Southern Illinois. An Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, Medical Humanities, and Law at SIU-SOM, he currently serves the State of Illinois as the Interim Chair of the Children’s Mental Health Partnership. On Thursday, July 7th, the Obama Foundation hosted an event at Overton Elementary School to celebrate the launch of the Local Lunchbox Chicago pilot program. During this summer, more than 100,000 meals will be served with the program. Local Lunchbox Chicago launched a few weeks ago and 10,000 meals had been served before the community launch. The goal of Local Lunchbox Chicago is to leverage the money the USDA already provides for organizations that feed children during the summer, with foods they prefer, taste wise and culturally, keeping in mind food allergies and nutrition. The aim is to ensure children lead healthy lives. The Obama Foundation has been in the community on the ground for years, building relationships and having conversations, as well as listening. Michael Strautmanis, Executive Vice President for External Affairs for the Obama Foundation, said there was a conversation between the Obama Foundation and the Shah Family Foundation to see if it was something that could be done in Chicago. One of the pillars of the effort with the impact the Obama Foundation wants to have in Chicago is built around healthy communities. “This is the kind of programming you’re going to see when the Obama Presidential Center opens a few years from today. Obviously, we can’t wait until then to get the work done. We wanted to get started right away,” Strautmanis said. President Barack Obama has always believed that change starts in communities. When trying to solve a challenge like young people needing food in the summer, that has to start in the neighborhood. When Overton Elementary School closed, the community stepped up and turned it into a community center. The Obama Foundation also is working with Emerald South to create economic opportunities for people in the neighborhood, leveraging the investment of the Obama Center. Emerald South is providing opportunities to repurpose
vacant lots. “When we knew there was this opportunity to feed children that needed food, and support their families in that way, we had to find a way to get it done,” Strautmanis said. Gary Comer Youth Center, After School Matters and YMCA partnered with the Obama Foundation for Lunchbox Chicago. The emphasis on culturally relevant foods is for young people to eat delicious, fresh, healthy food. Dorri McWhorter, President and CEO of YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, said the YMCA has 30,000 children enrolled in summer camp and some of those children might not have access to high quality food. Partnering with the Obama Foundation and Local Lunchbox Chicago would allow the YMCA to upgrade the quality of the meals the campers receive; ensure they are getting healthy and nutritious meals and help support community vendors. Campers from the YMCA attended the event on July 7th and were able to sample the food prepared by local vendors. McWhorter was glad the campers were able to have the experience and participate. “One, they get to experience this delicious food. Then, they also get to recognize how important that investment is that we’re making in them, in terms of making sure they have this access to food,” McWhorter said. Jill Shah, Founder and President of the Shah Family Foundation, said the organization wanted to partner with the Obama Foundation because the Obamas are leaders when it comes to health and wellness. Shah acknowledged the impact Local Lunchbox Chicago has made already, in just a few weeks of launching. “You can take every USDA dollar that flows into summer feeding and into school feeding, and you can optimize it around these things. Children can have things that are cooked around the corner, by people who know you, know your community and are served to you by people who love you. It’s an entirely different impact for the same dollar,” Shah said. For more information about Local Lunchbox Chicago, visit www.locallunchbox.org/chi.

ELIZABETH “LIZZIE G” ELIE LICENSED REALTOR
CHICAGO – ComEd has announced the launch of three new studies to better understand the technical and community challenges and opportunities presented by the clean energy transition envisioned by the newly enacted Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). “CEJA provides a roadmap to an equitable clean energy future for Illinois. The state’s utilities must now plan and execute the investments that will enable the rapid growth of renewables and electric vehicles, ensure the grid’s resilience to more extreme weather caused by climate change, and balance the need to keep electric bills affordable,” said ComEd CEO Gil Quiniones. “This transformation will offer tremendous economic, environmental and public health benefits, and these studies will help us design our grid plans to ensure that every community benefits.” These studies complement the comprehensive Climate Risk and Adaptation Study announced last week by ComEd and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science. The findings will inform ComEd’s grid investment plans, as described by CEJA, as well as how ComEd can support the state’s ambitious clean energy goals. For each of the new studies, ComEd has retained experienced research teams who have worked on these issues around the country. Stakeholder feedback and discussion will also be vital to helping inform the studies with a full picture of the challenges and opportunities associated with meeting the state’s energy goals and creating an equitable clean energy economy. These new studies will focus on three topics: • Decarbonization Pathways o ComEd is partnering with Energy+Environmental Economics (E3) to explore different pathways for Illinois which would achieve a net zero economy by 2050. While CEJA focused on power generation and achieving a decarbonized energy sector, this study will look beyond CEJA to full, economy-wide decarbonization. • Disadvantaged/Underrepresented Communities o ComEd is partnering with ILLUME Advising (ILLUME) to investigate clean energy services within disadvantaged communities. Through stakeholder engagement and regional analysis, ILLUME will explore the barriers that disadvantaged and environmental justice communities face in equitably receiving services toward clean energy transformation. • Jobs comed.com
o ComEd is partnering with BW Research to study the clean energy transformation’s impact on the Illinois workforce – particularly, the potential for new jobs in disadvantaged communities. This study will identify emerging employment opportunities in clean energy as well as potential transitions for those workers displaced from the retirement of fossil fuels. The research will include both statewide and regional analyses to support strategic planning as well as identifying workforce development opportunities for career pathways, economic mobility, and improved education and training programs. All three studies are intended to be complete by the fall of 2022, and a final report will be made publicly available for each. “As we build our clean energy future, we have an opportunity to address longstanding public health disparities and income inequality that disproportionally impact low-income residents and people of color,” said Carl Ellis, Chairperson of the Economic Development Committee for the NAACP, Westside Branch. “We’re proud to work alongside ComEd to identify and address existing barriers and find new ways to lift communities in need.” Separately, the Climate Risk and Adaptation Study will examine the impact of changing weather due to climate change, including sustained heat and flooding risk, on the design and performance of the region’s power grid. It is the first study launched in concert with the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Climate READi™: Power (REsilience and ADaptation initiative), a recently announced, three-year global program on climate change risk. This will be the first climate adaptation study in the region and one of the only studies in the nation to incorporate the impact of increased electrification into the climate risk planning process. These studies will inform ComEd’s planned grid investments that will continue to enable the clean, reliable and affordable power that ComEd customers have come to expect. ComEd in the first three months of 2022 delivered its most reliable service on record for any first quarter in the company’s history. Since starting smart grid investments in 2012, ComEd has avoided more than 17 million customer interruptions due in part to smart grid and system improvements, including digital “smart switches” that automatically reroute power around potential problem areas. These investments have helped save customers more than $3 billion in avoided outages and many millions more through efficiencies created by technologies like smart meters that help resolve outages remotely.

Foster Votes to Restore Reproductive Rights and Abortion Access Nationwide Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, two bills that would ensure access to abortion care nationwide: “As the Trump-packed Supreme Court and radical lawmakers across the nation wage an all-out assault against reproductive rights, Congress’ work to defend every woman’s basic health freedoms has never been more important. The Women’s Health Protection Act, which I was proud to help pass for a second time, would enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law to ensure access to reproductive health care, including abortion care, for women in every state. I was also proud to vote for the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which would protect women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to seek reproductive health care. “The American people overwhelmingly support access to safe, affordable reproductive care for all, and I am proud to stand with them in this fight. The House has done its part – it’s time for the Senate to vote to place these protections into federal law.” More information on the Women’s Health Protection Act can be found here, and the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act here.
Rep. Casten Votes for Active Shooter Alert Act Rep. Casten voted for legislation to quickly warn Illinois communities of a nearby active shooter. The Active Shooter Alert Act will establish a program similar to the AMBER Alert system, allowing law enforcement to effectively and efficiently alert the public during a shooting. Secured by the Democratic House Majority, today’s passage follows House Republicans’ inexplicable attempt to obstruct this life-saving legislation last month. Said Rep. Casten. “Law enforcement shouldn’t be relying on social media to alert the public about dangerous situations. Yesterday, I voted for The Active Shooter Alert Act to give departments the technology to send out AMBER Alert-like messages in the case of active shooter incidents. This bill will help law enforcement keep Illinoisans safe and informed during active shooter incidents, as well as make sure that communities have the resources, training and strategies they need to save lives. As we work to enact this urgently needed legislation, House Democrats will continue fighting to overcome Republican obstruction and bring our nation’s gun violence epidemic to an end.” Since 2009, communities across the nation have been torn apart by nearly 300 mass shootings – attacks that have killed more than 1,500 people and wounded 1,000 more. Among the most urgent challenges during an active shooter incident is the need to prevent additional victims from unknowingly walking into the line of fire. The Active Shooter Alert Act will support these life-saving efforts by establishing an Active Shooter Alert Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Coordinator will offer state and local law enforcement officials voluntary access to training, technical support and advice for improving or implementing active shooter alert systems. These resources include guidance on the most effective alert content, delivery strategies and recommendations such as silencing alerts in the immediate vicinity of a shooter. This legislation is strongly supported by major law enforcement organizations, including the National Sherriff’s Association, Major Cities Chiefs Associations, National Association of Police Organizations, Fraternal Order of Police, National Police Foundation and National District Attorneys Association. Last month, Rep. Casten voted for the the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the country’s first major gun violence prevention legislation in nearly three decades. This landmark legislation secured life-saving measures to keep weapons out of dangerous hands, strengthen mental health services and bolster school safety. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was recently signed into law by President Biden.

Magnum ice cream Partners with Cindy Bruna and Iris Van Herpen to Debut the World’s First Haute Couture Vegan Dress Made from Cocoa Beans ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., PRNewswire -- Magnum ice cream, the chocolatiers of ice cream, has partnered with luxury Dutch fashion designer, Iris Van Herpen – one of the industry’s most talented and forward-thinking creatives – to design a Haute Couture vegan dress inspired by the iconic Magnum vegan ice cream. Unveiled during Paris Fashion Week at Elysée Montmartre on July 4, the Magnum Vegan Dress was revealed to the world as Cindy Bruna took to the runway in Iris Van Herpen’s 15th Anniversary show debuting the unique design to the world and paving the way as Magnum ice cream’s first steps into circular fashion. The Magnum Vegan Dress is a celebration of Magnum ice cream’s vegan range; an expertly crafted and award-winning collection of delicious, plant-based indulgence and 100% Magnum ice cream decadence, without any dairy. Magnum ice cream believes a day without indulgence is a day lost, and that everyone should be able to pursue what brings them joy, whatever this may be. This campaign brings together Magnum ice cream fans from across the world to indulge in the decadence of plant-based deliciousness and invites them to experience and celebrate Magnum Vegan through an all-new fusion of Magnum ice cream, iconic fashion cocoa and haute couture. designer Iris Van Herpen and model The Vegan Dress Cindy Bruna debut first-ever haute The first of its kind for the brand, the Magnum Vegan Haute Couture Dress has been couture vegan dress to the world at Paris Fashion Week. PRNEWSFOTO/ designed and created using an intricate 3-diMAGNUM ICE CREAM mensional design, incorporating sustainable materials that reference Magnum ice cream’s vegan ingredients in an indulgent fusion between the brand’s iconic melting chocolate and Iris’ luxurious fluid designs. With the aid of 3-D printing technology, the Magnum Vegan Dress is also the first haute couture dress to be made from cocoa bean husks, which have been processed to create a fully organic biopolymer material. The dress features intricate details including plantlike body embellishments which are copper-coated, draped and entwined with upcycled and pliseed organza, while other 3-D elements have been printed using innovative SLS technology (Selective Laser Sintering). The creation of the Magnum Vegan Dress marks a dynamic collision between ice cream and haute couture, supporting both Magnum ice cream and the Maison of Iris van Herpen’s ambitions to work towards a fully sustainable production chain within the fashion industry and beyond. Speaking about the collaboration, Iris said: “I am honored to have been approached by Magnum ice cream as a partner to bring to life the Magnum Vegan Dress. As a designer, I have always worked to push the boundaries of design and this collaboration has really allowed us to take this one step further by linking the ingredients of an iconic Magnum Vegan to create a haute couture design. The opportunity to work with the brand on such an innovation in sustainable fashion has been a very special experience.” Cindy, who modeled the Magnum Vegan Dress said, “What an honor to be able to reveal the Magnum Vegan Dress to the world - and to be able to do this at Iris’ 15th anniversary show just makes this even more special. Bringing together ice cream and haute couture in such an unexpected and impactful way is so exciting, making this a partnership that I am delighted to be a part of.” Iris Van Herpen AW22 Collection The Magnum Vegan Dress is part of Iris van Herpen’s 15th anniversary collection titled “Meta Morphism.” The collection explores society’s embrace and acceptance of a new world of digitalism with the arrival of the Metaverse and how this is becoming an increasingly prevalent part of everyday life. Inspired by Ovid’s canonical poem “Metamorphoses,” the designer breaks down the lines between reality and digital realms in a futuristic, avant-garde collection designed to inspire and evoke the question of who we are beyond a perceived reality. Magnum ice cream’s Commitment to Sustainable Fashion Magnum ice cream is always looking to lessen its impact on the world and this partnership with Iris van Herpen marks the brand’s first step towards a wider ambition of circularity in the fashion industry. Magnum ice cream aims to strengthen its long-term commitment to fashion by announcing its intended partnership with the University of Leeds. The brand intends to commission a research project with the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC) in the School of Design to further this commitment and look at how Magnum ice cream can bring to life accessible, sustainable fashion using by-products from its core ingredients. This is part of the brand’s long-term commitment of putting sustainability at the heart of the brand and working towards revolutionizing its waste product into a viable, circular solution inspired by its longstanding inspiration from fashion. Throughout Paris Fashion Week, Magnum ice cream and Iris Van Herpen will be sharing exclusive behind-the-scenes content on TikTok and Instagram, inviting fans to experience the partnership and magic of fashion week virtually from across the globe. CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness Wins National Award for Leadership in Providing Comprehensive Student Services agriculture lab that provides a training space to equip teachers and school garden teams in various agriculture processes that can be used in classrooms and gardens. Over 200 schools have Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSA) to enhance safe and supportive school environments, and 130 schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, bringing hands-on nutrition education to thousands of students each year. In addition, OSHW experts provide programming and technical assistance to schools around mental health, sexual health education, LGBTQ+ support, physical activity, school gardens, direct health services, and enrollment in and utilization of public health benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP. Schools achieve Healthy CPS status by meeting at least 90 percent of criteria ranging from weekly physical education minutes and daily recess to staff training and healthy celebrations. As of SY18-19, the last year of reporting before the pandemic, 90 schools had achieved Healthy CPS certification, and 72 percent of the total criteria were met across the District. In 2019, OSHW expanded on the Healthy CPS programs by establishing the Whole Child Advisory Council, which regularly convenes departments, including the Office of Social Emotional Learning, the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services, the Office of School Safety and Security, the Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Support, and 019822_1E03_QEXL1313000_COMED22_EVRALLY_AWARENESS_CHICAGOCITIZEN_10-75X6-5.INDD Nutrition Support Services, to share initiative updates and Healthy CPS Bleed: 10.75" x 6.5" priorities, review policies Client: ComED Notes: Surburban Journal andWest programs through a whole child In addition to EV being Campaign: ComED Rally the primary CPS entity responsible Trim: 10.75" x 6.5" lens, and discuss opportunities for cross-departmental partLive:estab10.75" x 6.5" for providing health services to students, OSHW has Agency Job #: B1124-019822-00 nerships. CHICAGO -Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is honored to announce that the District’s Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW) will receive the American School Health Association’s (ASHA) Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Award, which recognizes organizations that have implemented a collaborative model that supports each child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. This award is being presented to CPS for its leadership in establishing the Healthy CPS program, which aligns with the District’s core value to serve the whole child so students are healthy, safe, engaged and academically challenged. As the nation’s third-largest school district, serving more than 330,000 students in 600-plus schools, the District aims to be a national leader in the field of school health and in providing comprehensive services as outlined in this video. “I’m proud of the dedicated team that makes up our Office of Student Health and Wellness, and this well-deserved award honors the work they do every single day to serve our students,” said CEO Pedro Martinez. “Our OSHW colleagues work extraordinarily hard on any given day, but particularly over the past two-plus years. OSHW set a goal to create a consistent, unified message to help school leaders understand how these pieces all fit together. Specific to the COVID-19 pandemic, OSHW has worked to support the whole child by leading the District’s effort to provide access to vaccines, free COVID-19 testing, personal protective equipment, and contact tracing to keep school communities safe. Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot along with First Lady Amy Eshleman, the Community Safety Coordination Center (CSCC), the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Parks Foundation, the Chicago Public Library, the Department of Family and Support Services, the Chicago Department of Public Health, Amazon, and 15 community-based organizations across the city announced the launch of the second annual Summer Kickback Series with extended evening programming on Saturday nights. The Summer Kickback Series was launched in 2021 in an effort to ensure youth across Chicago have access to engaging activities and necessary resources within their communities. This year, the City engaged and received additional feedback from community leaders, youth organizations, and Chicago’s youth on how to keep youth safe and create more opportunities in communities experiencing high levels of violence. Mayor Lightfoot and City departments launched the first youth-led Summer Kickback Series to provide teens with fun and safe activities in their communities on Friday nights in 2021. Building upon the success of last summer’s Friday Kickback Series, Mayor Lightfoot and the First Lady Amy Eshleman are now expanding programing to Saturday evenings to ensure even more weekend opportunities for youth are available. “This year, First Lady Amy Eshleman and I will continue to deepen our focus on ensuring Chicago’s families and young people have access to enriching opportunities this summer while simultaneously addressing the lack of safe, productive spaces for youth,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Through the launch of the My CHI. My Future. app, which contains thousands of opportunities, and the second year of the Summer Kickback series, our youth will have several safe and fun activities to choose from. This year’s Summer Kickbacks are made possible through a whole-of-government approach and partnerships with the Chicago Park District, the Department of Family and Support Services, the Community Safety Coordination Center, Amazon and 15 community-based organizations that are working together to create spaces where our young residents can safely gather.” The two-part Summer Kickback Series programming includes Friday events designed by teens for teens and City-led Saturday night events. Through community-based organizations, the City hired 210 teens who plan Friday events that are designed for teens ages 13 to 24 and their families in 15 communities on the South and West sides. Each of the 15 community-based organizations have hired 14 teens for 8 weeks, with each teen being paid $15 an hour. During the eight weeks of employment, the planning team promotes youth-focused opportunities and plans and hosts a Summer Kickback event every Friday between 5 and 9 p.m. The first event will be Friday, July 8, and will conclude on Friday, August 12. Each community will also have one “mothership” event this summer, an enhanced version of a kickback that will include a smoothie bar, e-gaming, a DJ and more activities with support from the Chicago Park District. This summer, the City will also host ten supplemental Low-Key Kickbacks: Saturday Edition, on Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The LowKey series will bring food, entertainment, and various activities to the South and West sides, starting July 23 at Grand Crossing Park. Entertainment will include prominent Chicago DJs, steppers and breakers, sporting events, a selfie station, art activations, and free COVID-19 vaccination sites. Below is a list of the Low-Key Kickbacks. July 23 at Grand Crossing Park July 30 at Franklin Park August 6 at Ogden Park August 16 at Humboldt Park August 20 at West Pullman Park August 27 at Abbot Park September 3 at Garfield Park September 10 at Foster Park September 10 at Cornell Square Park Using American Recovery Plan (ARP) funding and with the support of philanthropy, the City is investing nearly $1,000,000 in the 2022 Summer Kickback Series. Funding to hire the teens and young adults is provided by the Department of Family and Support Services and is being administered by the Chicago Parks Foundation. In addition, Amazon is providing funding for all Kickback events for a second summer in a row.

Reps. Davis, Gomez, Peters, & Panetta Introduce Bill to Help Millions of Struggling Renters via Innovative Tax Credit WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (DCA) introduced innovative legislation to help millions of cost-burdened renters at a time when housing costs are skyrocketing as the gap between incomes and housing costs grows. The Rent Relief Act creates a new tax credit for renters that would cover a percentage of the difference between 30 percent of their adjusted gross income and the actual cost of rent and utilities, capping the benefit at 100% of Small Area Fair Market Rent. The bill makes the credit available to most working families by allowing the credit for families earning up to $100,000. Further, it delivers help when needed with monthly payments to pay bills when they are due, building on the successful advanced Child Tax Credit that helped tens of millions escape poverty. Stable housing is foundational for the social, emotional, and economic well-being of individuals and families. Nationally, 8 million of the lowest-income renters spend at least half of their income on rent, leaving them little remaining to cover other basic needs for food, clothing, and health care. Despite the profound need, only 1 in 4 eligible households receives any help, and some households spend years on waitlists due to inadequate funding. Creating a new renters’ tax credit – along with expanding targeted investments to increase supply – can help end America’s housing crisis. “Every day thousands of people in Chicago struggle to pay rent,” said Rep. Davis. “The Rent Relief Act will help renters in a real, life-changing way so that they can better care for their families without fear of eviction or making the horrible choice between a roof over their heads or medicine and food for children. Direct grant assistance and affordable housing are essential, but only help a limited number of families. A renter’s credit could help every eligible taxpayer afford housing and improve their quality of life, working in concert with the
other supports to help end America’s housing crisis.” “As people struggle to recover from the pandemic and the cost of rent continues to rise, we need significant investments to ensure that families and individuals with the lowest incomes can afford and stay in their homes,” stated Foluke Akanni, Housing Policy Organizer at Housing Action Illinois. “More resources will support cost-burdened renters, prevent homelessness, and help stabilize our communities.” The Rent Relief Act is supported by over two dozen housing, ability, and family advocates, including: Autistic Self Advocacy Network; Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network; Center for Disability Rights; Church World Service; Coalition on Human Needs; Community Change; Epilepsy Foundation; Funders Together to End Homelessness; Housing Action Illinois; Housing California; Justice in Aging; LeadingAge; Liberation in a Generation; Local Initiatives Support Corporation; National Association for County Community and Economic Development; National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies; National Center for Housing and Child Welfare; National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development; National Health Care for the Homeless Council; National Homelessness Law Center; National Housing Law Project; National Housing Trust; National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund; National Low Income Housing Coalition; National NeighborWorks Association; National Network to End Domestic Violence; National Women’s Law Center; NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice; the Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign; and the Poverty & Race Research Action Council.

On-Trend Kitchen Upgrades
(Family Features) Designers from coast to coast are cooking up fresh ideas for kitchen upgrades. This year’s hottest trends bring numerous fresh aesthetic approaches while functionality also plays a leading role in top design ideas. If you are planning a kitchen upgrade, take inspiration from these on-trend elements spotted by the design experts at Wellborn Cabinet:
Unique Tile In recent years, backsplash tile has taken a more prominent role in kitchen design and has continued to grow in popularity to the point where tile is now a fullstop focal point. From eye-catching colors and patterns to texture that brings new dimension, kitchen tile can make a big statement. In fact, bold tile is not just limited to the backsplash. Patterned tile is an on-trend option for adding character to your flooring and dressing up commonly under-designed spaces like the window jamb with a practical material, like tile, that is easy to clean and maintain. Multiple Appliances Function is front and center in residential kitchen design this year, and homeowners’ growing demands to go big on appliances is proof. From double ovens to extra dishwashers, homeowners are committing to more useful features. There are even some kitchens that boast two refrigerators, which may be a nod to the way grocery shopping habits shifted during the pandemic, with fewer,
but larger, trips to the store.
Walk-Through Pantries Whether you are capitalizing on the mystique of a “hidden” room or attracted to the idea of a more seamless aesthetic, a walk-through pantry can be a stunning and functional solution. With a walk-through pantry, you can add extra space to an existing pantry to create a better flow to your floor plan. Available in a variety of widths and heights, Wellborn Cabinet’s Walk-Through Pantry blends naturally into the rest of your cabinetry to create visual continuity. Integrated magnetic door catches add stability and keep doorways securely closed. Wood Finishes After years of painted cabinets and woodwork dominating kitchen design, wood grain finishes are making a comeback. The look is cozy and inviting, and with a wide span of stain options, it is equally possible to take the look ultra-modern or veer toward a more traditional style. Outside of cabinetry, there is plenty of room to incorporate the warmth of wood, such as butcher-block counters or exposed beams. Green, Blue and Earth Tones Jewel-inspired hues had their moment, but this season’s color scheme is more about subtle shades that meld with neutrals for lighter, brighter spaces that feel airier and more spacious. Greens, in particular, pair well with an array of wood finishes, whether cabinetry, coun-
tertops or furnishings. Integrating greens, blues and other nature-inspired colors allows you to bring earthy serenity to a bustling and busy room, and this motif lends itself well to a design that creates a cohesive connection with adjacent outdoor living space.
Clever Storage Solutions The kitchen is a busy place prone to clutter, and this season you will find multiple examples of practical solutions showing up in showcase kitchens. The features that can make your kitchen chores easier and neater come in all shapes and sizes. For example, discreet knife blocks tucked into drawers, drawer dividers for maximum customization and sliders that make it easy to empty the trash and recycling bins. Marble Countertops Marble is not necessarily a new trend, but this year’s attention is on slabs of marble with eye-catching veins that make counters really pop. For a fresh take on marble, forgo the typical white, gray or black styles in favor of color. Standout gold veining or even full slabs with stunning greens, blues and reds can make a statement. If budget is an issue, or you are worried about too much of a good thing, consider using a bold slab on a smaller space, like the island, rather than outfitting the entire kitchen. The brown rice provides the ideal texture for the ginger, sesame and nutty notes in this dish, and the whole recipe can be on the table in 10 minutes. Because white fish fillets are neutral and mild, they absorb all the flavors from the dish, and are an ideal protein for those with busy schedules due to their short cooking time. Or, bursting with colors and flavors, this Fiesta Rice satisfies fresh cravings with an irresistible combo of white rice, tomatoes, green onions and creamy avocado. Ready in less than 5 minutes, this dish can also be customized with a different grain variety or extra juicy, sweet cherry tomatoes in place of diced tomatoes. • Maximize Your Phone Plan Internationally: When traveling overseas, purchasing a local SIM for that designated country will save you roaming charges and fees. An international SIM card is another option for those traveling to multiple countries for short periods of time. Make sure to check with your wireless provider for what’s included in your plan. For example, T-Mobile customers get 5GB of free high-speed data each month with no international data-roaming charges, with up to 5G speeds where available, in more than 210 countries and destina-

Stay Connected this Summer (StatePoint) After more than two years of pandemic-related restrictions, Americans are ready to break free and travel again. According to Expedia’s 2022 Travel Trends Report, more than two-thirds of Americans say they’re planning to “go big” on their next trip. But planning and budgeting for a trip can be stressful. With inflation rising, many people are watching their wallets more closely, so finding ways to save money and stay connected while traveling this summer is more important than ever. Here are some of the latest travel tips to make your next getaway more affordable: • Book Flights Like a Pro: According to NerdWallet, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to travel when flying within the United States. NerdWallet also suggests booking domestic airline tickets one to three months in advance. The more flexible you can be with your desired timeframe, destination, and airport, the better. Be on the hunt for exclusive partnerships that offer travel discounts, like T-Mobile TRAVEL with Priceline, a new site with travel deals of up to 40% off hotels
tions on the provider’s most popular plan, Magenta MAX, and on the Business Unlimited Ultimate plan. • Road Trip Smarter: Even though gas prices are soaring, those with large families, pets and a love for singalongs often still prefer to travel the open road when vacationing. Finding the best gas prices is easy with apps like GasBuddy and Gas Guru, which provide updated gas prices in your area. You can also save money at the pump leveraging other rewards programs, such as those offered by your phone provider. TMobile teamed up with Shell and the Fuel Rewards program to offer customers on qualifying plans an exclusive 25 cents off per gallon of gas this summer through the week of Labor Day via T-Mobile Tuesdays.
• Bring it, Don’t Buy it: If you’re looking to save a few dollars while traveling, bring your own snacks and reusable water bottle. Many airports have refillable water stations available. Having a designated travel charging kit in your luggage with charging cables for your smartwatch, phone, computer and more will save you the added and often inflated cost of buying on the go.
