OBAMA FOUNDATION’S MY BROTHER’S KEEPER ALLIANCE YOUTH MAKE DREAMS REALITY IN MONTANA Youth from the South Side of Chicago had the opportunity to make their dreams a reality over the Independence Day weekend. Five young men from the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance joined top media company, Turner Sports, for its sports Emmy-nominated premier live golf event series, Capital One’s The Match, in Montana. The event featured top athletes, including Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Phil Mickelson. The young men had a one-of-akind opportunity to shadow Turner experts, getting hands-on experience in public relations, photography, talent relations, and production, among other roles. Baltacesar Salinas, one of the youth who attended the weekend event and who is involved in La Villita Basketball with New Life Centers, a MBK Alliance seed community, said “New Life Centers, and the mentorship provided through the MBK Alliance support, has provided a safe place for the youth in my community and has nourished the younger generation to become the future of tomorrow.” My Brother’s Keeper launched in 2014 in the Obama White House to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color. Today, the work continues through the Obama Foundation and young men like Balatcesar.
Augustana Church, located at 5500 S. Woodlawn, now has a Love Fridge, the food-sharing collective. The goal of the Love Fridge is to provide food for those in need, as well as give those who want to donate food a chance to give back to the community. A Love Fridge was previously located in Hyde Park in August 2020 but removed because there was some pushback. Velma Smith, the organizer for the Love Fridge, said the collective always wanted to come back to Hyde Park because it was so well-connected within the community, for the people who wanted the fridge there. Kafi Moragne-Patterson, director of civic engagement at University of Chicago, said the Love Fridge is an opportunity for mutual aid for community members and University affiliates. She said it is her hope that University of Chicago students will serve as managers of the fridge, as well as serve as ambassadors to make people aware of the fridge. “It was all about partnering with the right folks to get a fridge there, luckily, Kafi and the church reached out to us,” Smith said. Smith said the Love Fridge is rooted
in mutual aid where the collective believes in food sovereignty as well as not giving out food waste. Smith said Love Fridge partners with businesses, community organizations and churches to host fridges. Those partners clean the fridges and put food inside them. Smith said there is food distribution where people get food from different partners to fill the fridge. And, people can buy food to put in the fridges. Food distribution takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays and there are 30 Love Fridge locations throughout Chicago. “Some of the things we see is people who need food are able to just go in and get food, no questions asked, no one telling how much they should get, no one telling them how much they need, which I think people really love,” Smith said. “One of the things we’ve seen within the pandemic is that, food pantries sometimes require identification to get food. With the Love Fridge, you don’t need that. You just go in and get whatever you need. Most of our fridges are 24-7 as well so you can get food at any time from one of the fridge locations.” Yael Hoffman posted on a neighborhood listserv that she was trying to bring the Love Fridge back to Hyde Park and looking for a privately owned space. Hoffman said the one reply she
www.citizennewspapergroup.com
received was from Augustana’s Pastor Nancy Goede. Hoffman said she thinks the concept of the Love Fridge is wonderful. She said one week it is completely filled and the next completely empty and needs to be stocked. “People have found it; people are using it. I think it’s a well-managed organization. I think it’s very organized and there is obviously a need,” she said. “We have the food pantries that provide beans, rice, cans goods, but people need fresh food for their kids, themselves and for the elderly. You need dairy, meat, and vegetables. So, this fills that need.” “The challenges of the pandemic suggested that at any point any of us could find ourselves and our families in precarious situations related to food security, so we wanted to acknowledge that a wide variety of people may be in need of healthy food options,” said Kafi Moragne-Patterson. “Students, coming from both international and domestic locations, community members, staff, and others may be in need of temporary, or long-term assistance, and if this fridge can ease that burden in some small way until larger systemic issues of class inequity are addressed, the University Community Service Center wanted to play that small role.”

Rep. Kelly Announces Economic Development Community Project Included in Appropriations Bill
POLITICAL Affairs
Congresswoman Kelly’s Request for $200,000 for Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation Included in FY 2022 Appropriations Bill Washington, DC – Today Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) announced her request of $200,000 for Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation (CSEDC) has been included in the text of the FY 2022 Appropriations bill, which will be considered by the House in the coming weeks. CSEDC requested this funding for their project, the 4343 Ascending House, the Chicago Southland Tech Incubator. “I am thrilled that my request for $200,000 to support the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation’s tech incubator project has been included in the FY 2022 appropriations bill,” said Rep. Kelly. “Our entire community will benefit from continued support of innovative new projects and businesses. I look forward to seeing the work CSEDC will be able do for Chicago and the South Suburbs once this bill has passed.” “Thank you to Congresswoman Robin Kelly and the Community Project Funding Committee for supporting advanced technologies in business development that will create a localized accelerator model with mentors, investors, and sector stakeholders to establish a supportive ecosystem where enterprises can thrive,” said Reggie Greenwood, Executive Director of Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation. “This is another indication that the federal government recognizes the need to invest in logistics and innovation to enhance the booming e-commerce industry that’s reshaping the Chicago Southland and reinforcing Illinois’ historic role as a leader in building wealth and opportunity for our citizens and our
nation. By collaborating with community partners and engaging key business partners such as Nicor Gas and Comcast, the 4343 Ascending House will help the Southland communities and small businesses thrive in the post-Covid era.” The Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation (CSEDC) is collaborating with partners to create 4343 Ascending House, the Chicago Southland Tech Incubator. The group sought $200,000 to support its incubator pilot programs, including creating a video conference center, a podcast studio, and an advanced printing lab. These resources will support the E-Commerce Entrepreneurs training program which operates InternMatch Illinois, a match-making platform for small businesses to find the right interns. The 4343 Ascending House will support start-ups by providing the necessary software, tools and connections to interns and new employees that start-ups otherwise may not be able to access due to high costs and the challenges of starting a new business. Under guidelines issued by the Appropriations Committee, each Member of Congress may request funding for up to 10 projects in their community for fiscal year 2022 – although only a handful may actually be funded. Projects are restricted to a limited number of federal funding streams, and only state and local governments and eligible non-profit entities are permitted to receive funding. Congresswoman Kelly is awaiting notification on her nine other Community Project Funding requests.

Leo Burnett Pilots Creative Boot Camp at Chicago State University In partnership with Marcus Graham Project, creative executives forge a fresh pathway for underrepresented talent; enrolled students secure internships within Publicis Groupe Five students from Chicago State University, Illinois’ sole four-year Predominantly Black Institution for higher education, began summer internships this week across Publicis Groupe, including at Leo Burnett Chicago, Arc Worldwide, and ThePub; and one of their classmates has accepted a full-time position at Publicis Health Media. The connection is the culmination of a decades-long partnership, and pro bono work through the Pencil Project, most recently with a boot camp creative curriculum during the Spring semester, with support from Marcus Graham Project. “This boot camp provided
a proxy of what it’s like to work at an ad agency – not just land the job,” explains Aki Spicer, Chief Strategy Officer for Leo Burnett. “We’ve made great strides with recruitment, but retention of diverse talent requires industry role models.” As Aki explains the “radical empathy” that drives the agency’s work, he points to the gift of time and talent in addition to financial support – an “innovation of donation” with hands-on mentorship from creative leads. “Chicago State University recognizes the power of workplace experiences, striving to secure experiential learning opportunities for
all our students that complements lessons from the classroom,” said Dr. Leslie Roundtree, Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Leo Burnett and the Marcus Graham Project are exemplary partners who are at the cutting edge of providing meaningful learning experiences that translate into paid internship and career opportunities.” Matthew Weiner, SVP, Group Creative Director at Arc Worldwide and a program lead on the boot camp, marvels at the next generation of creative talent. “Their technical abilities are off the chart, and they are ready to make it work,” referencing
busy students who were not necessarily advertising majors but did double duty at their day jobs to engage with the curriculum and excel. The Boot Camp included Jameelah Hargrove, Denae Hill, Ryonn Gloster, Archie Shaw, and Malcolm Conyers, who are Media Arts majors in the Department of Communications, Media Arts & Theatre at CSU. Students with business majors also participated in the Boot Camp. According to Matthew and his co-leads, the first step was to step back and simplify industry jargon while decoding corporate constructs for the students. Weekly lesson plans covered the creative process

in full, from brief writing to pitching and measuring results. Mary Daniels is the Associate Provost for Academic Innovation and Strategic Initiatives at CSU, where she is tasked with pushing curricula to meet industry standards while also drawing from the strength of students’ lived experiences. “Students not only applied skills from the classroom on a project much like the challenges they will encounter in their professional work but also created a final project that was stronger because they drew on their diverse lived experiences. This project is already resulting in meaningful progress in
expanding equity in the pathway from higher education to the workforce.” Lisa Ivy, VP, Global Strategy Director at Leo Burnett and a lifelong Chicagoan, proudly supports this critical resource for students of all ages who may not take the traditional path into advertising via portfolio school and specialized training. She and her team were brought into the partnership originally for brand identity, though her goal is for the students to ultimately lead branding in-house. “The boot camp was a beta. This is just the beginning,” she vows, with more updates to come for Fall 2021 and beyond.

NBA champion Stephen Curry joined members of the golf team, Howard alumni, members of the Board of Trustees, corporate sponsors and friends of the University for the two-day event that raised over $3 million in support of the golf program’s endowment. “I am deeply appreciative of all the sponsors for the Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic, including Zendesk, Nuna, Workday and Follow Alana. I am also immensely grateful to Stephen Curry for his continued support and generosity, which has enabled our Division I men’s and women’s golf teams to thrive,” said Wayne A. I. Frederick, president of Howard University. “Our goal is to introduce and inspire much-needed diversity into the world of golf. And as the golf course continues to serve as an important forum for business, the presence of Howard’s student-ath-
letes will only increase professional opportunities for students from historically Black colleges and universities and minority communities. I am grateful to Pebble Beach for hosting our event.” The event was hosted at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the No. 1 public golf course in America and six-time host of the U.S. Open Championship. An opening reception and private auction kicked off the event, followed by a day of golfing at the world-renowned public golf course. Curry golfed alongside student-athletes as they completed the 18-hole course. A closing reception was held to celebrate the outcome of the fundraising event and recognize the top five golfers. Over $3 million were raised as a result of event sponsorships, the private auction and participation in the event. “The Bison at the Beach Golf Classic was an experience I’ll never forget, and it was truly an honor to play at Pebble Beach Golf Links,” said Everett Whiten Jr., rising senior and student athlete for the men’s golf team. “I also got to meet the people who have impacted mine and my teammates futures
by donating to our golf program. It was a great networking opportunity, and I will always cherish this trip and the memories made with my team. I am grateful to all the sponsors and everyone that contributed to this successful event.” The Howard University golf program made its debut in the 2020-2021 academic year with Curry’s support. The golf team recently completed a successful inaugural season, which ended with Howard University rising senior Gregory Odom Jr. winning the individual title at the HBCU national championship, the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Works Collegiate Championship. “The Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic at Pebble Beach was incredible,” said Samuel G. Puryear, head coach for the Howard University men and women’s golf program. “The love and energy and the extreme kindness everyone showed at the event has already gotten me excited about next year’s Bison at the Beach, when we return to Pebble Beach during the Summer of 2022. We are truly trying to serve as the North Star for others to follow. This experience will create opportunities for years to come.” “Our inaugural golf classic marks an incredible milestone in the development and success of our golf program,” said Kery D. Davis, Howard University athletics director. “The support from
our sponsors and other members of the Howard community who participated in the event was inspiring to me, and it sends a very encouraging message to our student-athletes. I am so grateful for the support, and I look forward to returning to Pebble Beach for this event next year.” “Nuna is proud to support the personal and professional opportunities of Howard University’s student-athletes,” said Brad Bickley, Nuna global president. “We were thrilled to be a part of the Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic and to contribute to the endowment for Howard’s golf program. We look forward to a continued and successful partnership.” “Howard University is known for removing barriers for students to access top-level education, including matriculating with critical leadership skills needed in the world today,” said David W. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten Reacts to Latest CDC Guidance for Schools Washington—In response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated COVID-19 guidance for schools, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement: “Today’s guidance is grounded in both science and common sense. It takes what we’ve learned about COVID transmission in the last few months—from in-school learning, camps and the efficacy of vaccines— and charts a course for schools to fully reopen this fall.
“The guidance confirms two truths: that students learn better in the classroom, and that vaccines remain our best bet to stop the spread of this virus and get our kids and educators fully back to those classrooms for in-person learning. It also makes clear that masking is important in the absence of vaccination. For educators across the country, this guidance sets a floor, not a ceiling; it builds on the evidence we have about COVID transmission and reminds us that we must remain com-
mitted to other mitigation strategies so every school building is safe and welcoming for all, including those who are still too young to be vaccinated and those who cannot be. These additional safety measures include masking if not vaccinated, upgraded ventilation, regular testing, three feet of physical distance, and accommodations where necessary, particularly for those for whom vaccines are not efficacious. As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 reality, we are working hard to build
trust in our public school communities, which means listening to the parents and educators who are worried about safety as well as those who are eager to return to a world without COVID protocols— everyone has a place in our public schools. “We share the growing concern over the delta variant, as well as the evolving science around COVID transmission in young people, all of which make it incumbent upon school districts to remain committed

both to vaccinations, and to these safety protocols. But our ultimate goal remains: to get students, teachers and staff back in school buildings full time, and to make sure they’re safe while doing it. Right now, the best way we know how to do that is to encourage as many people as possible to get vaccinated, and in fact, dozens of AFT affiliates around the country are holding vaccine clinics and drives in their communities to make that happen.”

The ‘Yet, Still We Rise’ Scholarship Fundraiser, Gala and Silent Auction will highlight the academic achievements and success of young black males in the Chicago area. The event honors the legacy of Ezekiel Taylor who was robbed, and killed on Chicago’s Southside in the early 80s. The gala, usually an in-person affair, is virtual again due to the Covid pandemic. “The pandemic has forced our students to survive, thrive and think outside of the box, and it has also caused our foundation to become more innovative and creative,” says Tenisha Taylor, daughter of Ezekiel Taylor and ETSF CEO. “These young men have survived a tumultuous year. From the public health crisis, to the cloud of Black
on Black crime, to the Black Lives Matter movement, young Black men are traumatized on every level. Despite the negative news and societal constraints, we are celebrating the achievements and academic success of young men who are making positive life choices”, adds the former CNN Executive Producer. ‘Yet, Still We Rise’ is a one-hour production that celebrates the 2021 scholarship winners, and highlights their achievements. “You can’t be what you can’t see,” says Dennis Banks, annual donor and owner of C.F.K. ETSF celebrates its 5th year of operation. To date, it has awarded more $100,000 in college scholarships from a grass roots level. “This is an amazing foundation. COVID ‘Surge Teams’ May Be Coming To Your Town Black PR Wire - The White House is readying COVID-19 “surge teams” to send to communities with low vaccination rates to help combat the rapidly spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus, officials announced Thursday. The teams will work with local public health authorities to conduct contact tracing and will distribute supplies as needed or requested by states, such as therapeutics and additional tests. The teams will also help augment staffing at local vaccination sites. The Biden administration plans to deploy “surge response” teams to some states, including Missouri, in response to rising COVID-19 cases across various parts of the country. Nevada and Missouri have had the highest rates of COVID-19 infection in recent weeks, and there have been recent outbreaks in Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming, as well. According to the Kansas City Star and multiple media reports, Missouri has requested aid from the White House, which announced
the newly-formed federal “surge response” teams on Thursday. Teams will be deployed to several states where the COVID-19 Delta
variant presents risks to unvaccinated Americans. In a recent report, the CDC says the highest proportion of Delta variant was
detected in southwest Missouri, which accounted for nearly twothirds of all Delta variants identified in the state.
The teams are designed to “surge additional testing into communities to expand detection of the virus and allow public health authorities to do contact tracing to help contain outbreaks,” according to an announcement from the White House. State data shows that 44.6% of residents have received at least one shot, far short of the 54.7% rate nationally. In more than 60 Missouri counties, less than 30% of the population had received their first shot, according to state data. Arkansas has less than 35% of residents fully vaccinated as of Sunday, and the state averaged 16 new cases per 100,000 residents every day over the past week, according to Johns Hopkins. That’s about five times the nationwide rate of new cases. The surge teams will work with public health department officials to conduct contact tracing. They will also distribute supplies such as therapeutics or COVID-19 tests and bolster staffing levels at vaccination sites.

adidas Originals Launches Fall/Winter 2021 Forum Collection Celebrating Those Who Turn an Open Mind into a Way of Life PRNewswire - For Fall/Winter 2021, adidas Originals has once again reimagined the iconic Forum silhouette, this time in celebration of the cultural leaders who are redefining the style of tomorrow. Encouraging a new generation to embrace an open attitude, the latest Forum collection is informed by an innate ethos of unapologetic amateurism and the irreverent spirit of never being afraid to experiment with new ideas. In the decades since the adidas Forum first debuted on the court, the timeless sneaker has played an integral part in shaping culture as a bona fide style icon, continually being adopted and recontextualised by those who effortlessly embrace a new world of unknowns. With its roots in basketball, today the silhouette represents an open invitation for aesthetic self-expression — standing out on the feet of artists, musicians, designers, grassroots community organisers and beyond. Inspired by the fervent spirit of open-minded experimentation that defines some of this generation’s most forward-thinking cultural tastemakers, the seasonal Forum campaign stars British artists Slowthai and Beabadoobee, alongside a cast of creative polymaths as they descend upon their local parks where the courts are teeming with energy. This season’s Forum offering is inspired by the innate essence of the 1980s. Championing those who never cease to express themselves, the iconic Forum sneaker has been reimagined in distinct new looks — each one drawing on the silhouette’s heritage. First up, the Forum Exhibit Low features all the sneaker’s classic elements wrapped into a low-profile look, matched with a removable strap, a luxe white leather upper with red accents and navy blue details, as well as a courtready rubber outsole. The iconic Forum Low rounds out the collection, elevating the sneaker’s classic look with a basketball inspired white, navy, red, and yellow colorway. In addition, for Fall/Winter 2021 adidas Originals pays homage to the timeless sneaker’s roots by reintroducing modernized versions of the Forum Low in the silhouette’s quintessential white and blue colorway. In celebration of the launch of the collection, adidas Originals has partnered exclusively with Snapchat to offer Bitmoji renditions of the iconic silhouette, allowing users to update their avatar to match their look. Championing those who turn an open mind into a way of life, the next iterations of the iconic adidas Originals Forum silhouette are available at adidas.co.id and via select adidas retail locations soon.

Enjoy Wearing Contact Lenses Again
(NewsUSA) - Contact lenses allow those individuals who need vision correction the freedom to see better without the inconvenience of glasses. However, contact lenses can also cause inflammation, pain, and dry eyes, according to Dr. Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, FACS. "More than fifteen percent of people suffer from a problem called contact lens intolerance, where discomfort and dryness is so great, they have to give up their
lenses," says Dr. Donnenfeld, a board-certified ophthalmologist, clinical professor of ophthalmology at New York University, and past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. In addition, contact lens wearers run the risk of serious eye infections. A recent report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that approximately 20 percent of infections associated with contact lens wear led to serious eye damage. "Many of my own patients are upset and frustrated because they can no longer wear contact lenses," says Dr. Donnenfeld. However, several new treatment approaches, including an eyelid cleanser called Avenova, can help, he says. "The most common cause of contact lens intolerance is dry eye, which occurs when the eye doesn't have a sufficient film of protective tears," Dr. Donnenfeld explains. "That problem, in turn, is caused or exacerbated by bacteria and tiny parasitic mites that live on the eyelids. The microbes not only irritate sensitive eye tissue, causing pain and inflammation (and, sometimes, serious eye infections), they also make enzymes that break down a crucial oil layer that protects the tear film," he says. Avenova with Neutrox, from NovaBay Pharmaceuticals, has become Dr. Donnenfeld's first line therapy of choice for managing the bacteria associated with chronic dry eye. Avenova "inactivates the bacterial enzymes, helping to stabilize the tear film and improve comfort. So far, every single one of my patients suffering from contact lens intolerance or other chronic eye conditions has been helped by simple twice-daily wipes with Avenova. It truly is a breakthrough," Dr. Donnenfeld says. Two additional devices can be used to help make contact lens use more comfortable: a new device called LipiFlow applies heat and controlled pressure to the inner eyelid, unblocking the glands that produce the crucial oil; and another device, called BlephEx, deep cleans the lid margins with a disposable sponge, Dr. Donnenfeld says. Visit Avenova.com for more information about appropriate eye and eyelid hygiene products.
Knowing If It's Alzheimer's Or Just Typical Age-Related Changes (NewsUSA) - Maybe your mom forgot where she parked her car. Or maybe you had to resort to describing "the thing that gets the creases out of clothes" to a salesperson because you couldn't remember the word "iron." In either case, part of you may have been worried it could be … Alzheimer's disease. With good reason. Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. joins the more than 5 million Americans now living with this fatal brain disease, which slowly destroys memory and thinking skills before ultimately making even a simple thing like swallowing impossible. And with no current cure, it's no wonder a recent poll found that no other life-threatening condition - not cancer, not strokes - instills more fear among those 65 and older. "One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia," says a spokesperson for the association. "But it isn't just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under age 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer's disease." To help raise awareness and critical funds for care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held through November in more than 600 communities nationwide. It's the largest event of its kind, and the financial services firm Edward Jones has committed to raising $12 million over five years as its national presenting sponsor. "This is about empathy," says the firm's Ken Cella. "And not just for the estimated 150,000 Edward Jones clients suffering from Alzheimer's, or another dementia, and those upending their lives to care for them." Given all the understandable fear surrounding the disease, it's important to distinguish between what may be early symptoms of Alzheimer's or another dementia and the typical age-related changes most everyone experiences now and then: * Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. (A typical age-related change: Sometimes forgetting appointments or names, but remembering them later.) * Difficulty completing familiar tasks. They may have trouble driving to a familiar location or remembering the rules of a favorite game. (A typical age-related change: Occasionally needing help recording a TV show.) * Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. Vision problems can be a symptom for some. That may lead to difficulty with balance or trouble reading, and they may also have problems judging distance and determining color or contrast that cause issues with driving. (A typical age-related change: Vision changes related to cataracts.) * Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. They may put things in unusual places - and even accuse others of stealing, especially as the disease progresses. (A typical age-related change: Occasionally misplacing things and retracing steps to find them.)
* Withdrawal from work or social activities. They may experience changes in the ability to hold or follow a conversation, which can cause them to withdraw from hobbies, social activities or other engagements. (A typical age-related change: Sometimes feeling uninterested in family or social obligations.) * Changes in mood and personality. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may also be easily upset at home, with friends, or when out of their comfort zone. (A typical age-related change: Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted.)
Study Refutes Link Between Strokes, Chiropractic Care Every once in a while, when some high-profile young man or woman dies unexpectedly from a stroke, the media races to find an explanation. Aha! She ran a marathon without being in shape! Aha! He visited a chiropractor several days before to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck! The latter theory at least is refuted by research done this year by a team of neurosurgeons at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. They performed what they described as "a systematic review and metaanalysis of published data" to determine whether there's a direct correlation between the manipulation performed by doctors of chiropractic -- manual adjustments widely acknowledged to relieve muscle-related pain -- and a condition called cervical artery dissection(CAD) in which a small tear opens in the artery walls of the neck. That's important since such a tear can result in a stroke should a blood clot form and later break free to block a blood vessel in the brain. The team's conclusion? "There is no convincing evidence to support a causal link between chiropractic manipulation and CAD." CAD is actually quite rare. It's been estimated that it annually strikes only two to three people, per 100,000 of the population, and various epidemiologic studies through the years suggest that strokes can occur at an equal rate whether sufferers are under chiropractic or other medical care for the headaches and neck pain it often produces. As for chiropractic care in general, it's worth remembering that -- after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged doctors last March to avoid prescribing potentially addictive prescription painkillers in the face of mounting deaths -- a slew of health experts joined the chorus of those who'd already been praising chiropractic as a safe and effective treatment for neck, mid back, and lower back pain. "Not only is chiropractic care very safe, it actually poses fewer risks than medical or surgical treatment," says Gerard Clum, DC, a spokesperson for the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress.
