HUNTER PLAN TO PREVENT FUTURE CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL CLOSURES BECOMES LAW State Senator Mattie Hunter’s (D-Chicago) plan to prevent future closures of Chicago Public Schools without proper warning was signed into law recently. “As we’ve seen in the news lately, CPS has been closing school doors without notice, leaving thousands of students without a neighborhood school to go to or forcing them to travel to a new consolidated school,” Hunter said. “That’s unacceptable.” House Bill 5721 requires more long-term planning, transparency for capital spending, community input and district collaboration to prevent inefficient and disruptive school closings. It also mandates CPS to provide more notice and information on the status of schools. The governor recently signed House Bill 5721. It takes effect immediately.

CHICAGO DENTIST INVITES THE PUBLIC TO 2ND ANNUAL ORAL CANCER WALK TO HELP SAVE LIVES With oral cancer on the rise, Chicago Dental Society (CDS) member Dr. Josephine Chang Pallotto and the Oral Cancer Foundation recently invited the public to join the 2nd Annual Oral Cancer Walk to raise funds and awareness of this disease. The event was held at the University of Illinois Chicago at the Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium locates on 901 Roosevelt Road in Chicago. Roughly 52,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2018, according to the American Cancer Society. Because oral cancer is often discovered at a late stage, more than 10,000 of those cases may be terminal – so early detection is key to increasing survival rates. Inspired by her mother’s perseverance and strength during her own cancer treatments to help find a cure for other patients, Dr. Chang Pallotto organized the first Oral Cancer Walk in 2017. Proceeds raised from the 2nd Annual Walk will go toward increasing awareness about the signs and symptoms, and how to screen for the disease – as well as toward oral cancer prevention through lifestyle changes, improved treatment modalities and research.

Career Coach Gives Advice On How To Prepare For a Career Change Or Promotion Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
Career Coach, Success Mentor and Speaker, Lakrisha Davis, recently visited the Chicago Citizen Newspaper to talk about her work and share some of her tips and tricks for making a career transition. Not too long ago, Davis found her self in a job that she was not fulfilled by. She made the choice to leave her job without any idea of what might follow that decision and quickly learned the job market had drastically changed since the last time she had been submitting her resume. “I had to really get out there and figure out how to make this work for myself after being at a job for several years and the job market changing right before my eyes. I had to figure out how to make my resume work and pass the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Going on an interview, we can’t any longer go and just say we are looking for a better opportunity, you have to be creative and there is a lot more competition,” said Davis. After navigating all of these unexpected barriers to employment, Davis said she was able to secure a better position than

she ever expected and increased her salary by 60 percent. Though finding success for herself, Davis realized that she wanted to teach other people how to do what she had just done. “What I do is I help mid-career to executive level professionals usually make their career transitions all the way from resume writing and I also offer full service coaching from interviewing, job search strategies, and leveraging LinkedIn which I think a lot of people miss out on opportunities on LinkedIn. Also, I help people that are looking to create their own jobs for themselves, I help them create their own careers from the ground up,” said Davis. For people who have found themselves at a job they no longer enjoy, Davis recommends developing an exit strategy that could include either organizing your
money in a way which makes it possible to take a couple months off to focus on job hunting, or building an after work schedule that focuses on searching for and applying to new positions. “Figure out what your goal is to make this transition, whether it’s three months or six months, and what do you need to do to get there,” said Davis. “Make a plan for yourself where you can recharge and focus on what’s next. If you have savings already then that works and if you don’t then you have to figure out how to make it work for you.” For those who love their company, but see themselves in a higher role, Davis tells people to “consult their leader” and let them know what work they want to do and what position they want to hold. Combined with $500 million from public/private park partnerships, total park spending totaled $8 billion in this last fiscal year. The 2018 City Park Facts report also reveals an increased investment in certain park features over the last year including a 22% increase in community gardens, a 69% increase in pickleball courts, and a 35% increase in splash pads. Still, there is significant work to be done to provide access to parks, as 30% of people do
not live within a 10-minute walk of a park. “Everyone deserves a great park within a 10-minute walk of home,” said Diane Regas, president and CEO of The Trust for Public Land. “Sound research and data are necessary tools for increasing access to parks, so that every person—regardless of their income, race or zip code— can experience the immense benefits that parks provide.” The Trust for Public Land is leading a national movement to ensure that everyone has access to a great park within a 10-minute walk of home. City Park Facts, published annually since 2010, is a tool for both park professionals and advocates alike. By tracking where park

investment is occurring, the report empowers residents and park officials to advocate for resources and amenities to better serve their community. The data in City Park Facts supplements The Trust for Public Land’s annual ParkScore® index, which ranks parks systems in the 100 largest U.S. cities. As the report also shows, volunteers make a huge contribution to our public parks, donating 16.9 million hours in 2018. Volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks, from assisting with recreation programs to coaching teams to weeding, planting, and watering. The cities with the most park volunteer hours are Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Jacksonville, and San Diego. Splashpads—which are increasingly including water-saving features—are one of the fastest growing amenities in the 100 largest U.S.
cities, up 35% from 2017 to 1,797 in 2018. Cities with the most splashpads per capita are Louisville, Cleveland, Boston, New York, and Chicago. Pickleball courts are another fast growing amenity, with 708 courts in public parks, up 69% from 2017. The sport, played with inexpensive rackets and a “whiffle-like” ball, is popular with all ages, especially seniors. The cities with the most pickleball courts per capita are Seattle, St. Paul, Madison, Virginia Beach, and Omaha. Community garden plots located in public parks number 29,251, up 22% from 2017, making them another of the fastest growing park amenities. Top cities for community gardens per capita are St. Paul, Portland, Washington, DC, Madison, and Louisville. The University of Chicago’s Community Programs Accelerator is currently accepting applications for this year’s program cycle. The initiative supports non-profit organizations that are based in, or serve, Chicago’s Douglas, Grand Boulevard, Greater Grand Crossing, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, South Shore, Washington Park, and Woodlawn neighborhoods. The Community Programs Accelerator is an initiative out of the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago and provides multiple levels of tailored assistance to strengthen the selected organizations based on their needs by connecting them with University resources and partnerships. “The Community Programs Accelerator, as I see it, is a unique opportunity to create a front door to the resources that the University of Chicago offers for community-based non-profits in the nine neighborhoods that surround the University.,” said Ryan Priest director of community programs in the Office of Civic Engagement.
The Accelerator’s core program provides funding, in the form of grants, and human support, meaning access to faculty, staff, and students from the University of Chicago, for non-profit organizations along with customized support based on what the organization’s specific needs are for up to three years. Associates Level organizations in the Accelerator program will receive capacity building support to help fulfill a core function in several relevant projects over the course of a year. Special Projects organizations will receive discrete technical assistance through staff support and student engagement to address a specific issue or project over the course of 10 to 20 weeks, according to a press release from the University of Chicago’s Office of Civic Engagement. “We provide both the material incentive through the grant that we offer, which is up to $50,000, to these organizations, but equally important, we are gathering together the intellectual and human capital in terms of people who are willing to engage these organizations and help to increase their infrastructure,” said Priest. The Community Program Accelerator is aimed at commuwww.thechicagocitizen.com
nity-based organizations that reside in the nine neighborhoods surrounding the school or have a majority of their participants coming from those nine neighborhoods, but there is also a magnet category in the application process that is designed for organizations that want to bring services to the area to fill a service gap. “I think organizations that are looking for a way to grow and develop their organizational capacity are the ideal candidates. People that are interested in investing in the long-term strength of the organization,” said Priest. Community organizations that are interested in accessing resources from the University of Chicago, but aren’t quite ready for the full Accelerator program are still welcome to apply and the odds are that the University will still be able to find a way to engage with them. The application is simply “the central portal for support,” according to Priest. The application for the Community Programs Accelerator is available online at communityprograms.uchicago.edu and will be accepted until August 31.

BE AUTHENTIC A former Marine and fulltime pharmacist, Starsky Clark of Baton Rouge, LA, initially joined Avon to make some extra income as a side hustle. She quickly realized her potential to grow her business in a big way and has since forged a career as
a successful Representative and leader in the community. Her recipe for success? “Be passionate about your business and the products you’re selling,” says Starsky. “Use the products yourself! That way, you’ll be able to share your authentic anecdotes with others to build personal relationships and special connections with your customers.” LEAN ON YOUR MENTORS Andres Taberes of Grayson, GA, was working in a car body shop when he met his now wife, Valeryn, and it was love at first sight. A few years ago, when they were expecting their first child, Andres realized that his long hours at the body shop would keep him from partaking in important milestones. So, he turned to his mentor for help: his mom, who happened to be a successful Avon Representative. “My mom encouraged me to become an Avon Representative and I’ve never looked back, says Andres. “Listening to her share her own journey and the mistakes she made helped me carve out my own path. Soon after, my wife joined as well and now we live an incredible lifestyle and still make time for our son and each other.” DEDICATE TIME CONSISTENTLY Donna Reid-Mitchell of Frisco, TX was a single mother

By laying the groundwork and pushing herself to continuously make time to work on and grow her business, Donna was able to transform her side hustle into a lucrative business long-term. “As soon as I started, I found that consistency was the difference between a good business and a great business,”
says Donna. “I wanted to build something that would be sustainable; an empire that I could pass on to my children. I developed a real business plan that unfolded consistently over time, and 15 years later I’m continuing to reap the benefits.” Interested in learning more about starting your own business with Avon? MONEY MATTERS
How Much Do Your Kids Know About Money? StatePoint - With consumer debt on the rise and many failing to adequately save for the future, experts say that financial illiteracy is a major problem for Americans -- and one that communities and parents have a joint responsibility to address, starting in childhood. And right now, most children are coming up short in this area. Over 62 percent of the 15- to 18-year-olds tested by the National Financial Educators Council received either a “D” or “F” on the 2017 National Financial Literacy Test. Without intervention, these young people could grow up without the skills needed to manage credit cards, loan debt or savings goals. If you’re a parent, you’ve likely already instilled in your children the importance of good grades and healthy decisions, but if you aren’t also discussing concepts like overall saving, budgeting and the importance of having an emergency fund, now is the time to start. Children are never too young to learn skills needed for a secure financial future. To get started, consider these tips: • Teach young children money basics by playing “store” at home. Take turns being the customer and the cashier. Play board games involving money exchanges to practice addition and subtraction. • Give children an allowance and help them create a budget. Stress the difference between needs vs. wants to help them make smart decisions when it comes time to shop for clothes, school supplies, toys and more. • Offer children incentives to save, promising to match any money they sock away so they’ll learn how invested money grows. • Encourage teenagers to get part-time jobs, then help them make smart decisions about how to allocate their income, whether that’s saving for big-ticket items, putting money away for college or donating to charity. • Review free, online financial education materials together that are geared for school-age children, such as those found at PurchasingPower.com and JuniorAchievement.org. “Purchasing Power has been helping adults learn to manage their money in smarter, more flexible ways for years,” says Richard Carrano, Purchasing Power CEO. “Expanding these efforts to include resources for young people empowers parents to put their kids on the right path in their formative years.” • Seek out community initiatives helping to combat financial illiteracy. For example, Purchasing Power, LLC, a workplace voluntary benefit that allows US workers to buy brand-name products and services interest-free through payroll deduction versus traditional high-interest credit options, partners with Junior Achievement USA, an organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need for economic success. In Atlanta, for example, more than 30,000 middle school students visit the Junior Achievement Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center yearly, where they work with business leaders to learn about real-life financial situations. Together with Junior Achievement, Atlanta corporations including Purchasing Power are supporting a generation that knows how to budget, save and invest. “Financial illiteracy and confusion over money matters is a national problem that won’t be solved overnight,” adds Carrano. “However, families, employers and communities can take proactive steps to raise money-smart kids and foster healthy financial futures.” Children are never too young to learn how to spend responsibly and save for the future. Get started now in your household.

Additionally, Sunday, September 2nd is designated as ‘Social Justice Sunday.’ We are asking every pastor to preach a sermon related to social justice,” said Bishop Reginald Jackson, president of the Bishops Council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He continued, “There are some who think the Black Church is weak and has little strength or influence. This thinking is incorrect. We are at war, and we call all soldiers to active duty. “Our coming together will also kick-off our efforts for the mid-term elections. Our priority will be to register, educate, organize and mobilize our people to vote in November. If Blacks turn out in large numbers, we will determine the outcome in a large number of races,” said Jackson. “It is time for the Black Church to speak, our congregations and the nation need to hear us. Therefore, It is not only time for us to say something, we must do something. We must fight against spiritual wickedness in high places.” The itinerary for the “Call to Conscience — Day of Action” is as follows:

For the first time in history, an Illinois resident will be honored with the World Peace Prize. The World Peace Prize Awarding Council (WPPAC) recently announced that Michael T. Carrigan president of the Illinois AFL-CIO will receive the prestigious prize of “Roving Ambassador for Peace.” The presentation ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 8, 2018, in Burr Ridge. It will be preceded by a Brunch at 11 AM, with the ceremony to commence at 12:45 PM at 999 McClintock Dr. Burr Ridge. IL 60527. World Leader and Master Planner, Rev. Dr. Han Min Su, founded the World Peace Prize in Seoul, South Korea, in 1989. Dr. Han is a Presbyterian Minister. Dr. Han said: “Our Washington office, headed by Fr. Sean Mc Manus and Barbara Flaherty of the Irish National Caucus, nominated the Honorable Michael Carrigan. Our 14-member Board of International and Interfaith judges unanimously selected Mr. Carrigan. Our Board is comprised of representatives of the world’s nine major religions: Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Russian Orthodox, and Zoroastrianism. We congratulate Mr. Carrigan, while also knowing that his acceptance honors our noble idea and mission of world peace.” Fr. Sean Mc Manus — President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus and Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize Awarding Council (WPPAC)— said: “I have the honor of being the Chief Judge of the World Peace Prize Awarding Council
(headquartered in Seoul, South Korea). We were pleased to be able to propose Michael Carrigan because of the intrinsic link between justice and peace: peace is, indeed, the fruit of justice. Labor Leaders who spend their entire lives working in solidarity for justice for working men and women are, indeed , working for peace—not only nationally but also globally. Hence, Labor leaders — and Michael Carrigan in particular—are eminently qualified to be candidates for the World Peace Prize of Roving Ambassador for Peace. Furthermore, our Peace Prizes encourage members of the Labor Movement to positively think of themselves as not just fighters for justice but as peace builders as well. I believe this gives an important dimension to Labor’s selfunderstanding, self-image, and selfidentity. And, I urge all members of the Labor Movement to embrace it —as I know Michael Carrigan does. So, too, does the national president of the AFLCIO, the great Richard L. Trumka.” Michael Carrigan said: “I am humbled and deeply honored to receive this recognition from the World Peace Prize Awarding Council. The Labor Movement and its allies build peace through economic and social justice causes throughout the world. Our fight for justice knows no borders and the enemies of peace are the enemies of justice. The work continues and the Labor Movement will not be distracted from its goals. I would like to thank the Awarding Council for this great honor and accept it on behalf of all in the Labor Movement fighting for justice and building peace throughout the world.” END.

Memorial Services Planned for Sen. John McCain On Aug. 25, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) died of a brain tumor, specifically glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of the cancer, according to reports. McCain would have been 82 on Aug. 29. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his family and had served the United States of America for sixty years, according to a released statement from his office. BACKGROUND McCain was a war hero and had a media reputation as a maverick for his willingness to disagree with his party on certain issues. “The son and grandson of distinguished Navy Admirals, Sen. McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958, and served as a Naval aviator for 22 years, including in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War,” according to his website, johnmccain.com. “On Oct. 26, 1967, during Sen. McCain’s 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam, a missile struck his plane and forced him to eject, knocking him unconscious and breaking both his arms and his leg. Sen. McCain was taken as a prisoner of war into the now-infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton,’ where he was denied needed medical treatment and subjected to years of torture by the North Vietnamese. He spent much of his time as a prisoner of war in solitary confinement, aided by his faith and the friendships of his fellow POWs. “When he was finally released and able to return home years later, Sen. McCain continued his service by regaining his naval flight status. His last Navy duty assignment was to serve as the naval liaison to the United States Senate. He retired from the Navy in 1981. His naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Sen. McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and elected to the United States Senate in 1986. He was the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 2008 election. Over the course of his career, Sen. McCain served as Chairman of the Senate Committees on Indian Affairs, Commerce, Science and Transportation, and most recently, Armed Services,” according to johnmccain.com 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION In his 2008 concession speech where he was defeated by President Barack Obama, McCain said, “This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight. I’ve always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Sen. Obama believes that, too. “But we both recognize that though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation’s reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still had the power to wound.” He continued, “A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt’s invitation of Booker T. Washington to visit — to dine at the White House — was taken as an outrage in many quarters. America today is a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time. There is no better evidence of this than the election of an African-American to the presidency of the United States. Let there be no reason now for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth.” OBAMACARE In his last Senate race, McCain campaigned on the platform to repeal and replace Obamacare. However, many will remember him as the incidental savior of the Affordable Care Act, whose late-night thumbs-down vote kept his party from overturning Obamacare. But in his 2018 memoir entitled, The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciation, McCain said, “I was thanked for my vote by Democratic friends more profusely than I should have been for helping save Obamacare. That had not been my goal.” In a released statement on July 28, 2017, he

elaborated on this decision to vote “no” on the so-called “skinny repeal” of Obamacare where he said, “From the beginning, I have believed that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with a solution that increases competition, lowers costs, and improves care for the American people. The so-called ‘skinny repeal’ amendment the Senate voted on today would not accomplish those goals. While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacare’s most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement to actually reform our health care system and deliver affordable, quality health care to our citizens. The Speaker’s statement that the House would be ‘willing’ to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time. “I’ve stated time and time again that one of the major failures of Obamacare was that it was rammed through Congress by Democrats on a strict-party line basis without a single Republican vote. We should not make the mistakes of the past that has led to Obamacare’s collapse, including in my home state of Arizona where premiums are skyrocketing and health care providers are fleeing the marketplace. We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle, heed the recommendations of nation’s governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people. We must do the hard work our citizens expect of us and deserve.” Writing about his life in his memoir he said, “It’s been quite a ride. I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a www.thechicagocitizen.com

war, and helped make peace. I’ve lived very well and I’ve been deprived of all comforts. I’ve been as lonely as a person can be and I’ve enjoyed the company of heroes. I’ve suffered the deepest despair and experienced the highest exultation. “I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times.” MEMORIALS AND EVENTS CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF SEN. vulnerable to financial aid and scholarship scams. “Scammers know to take advantage of those who are stressed,” says Robert C. Ballard, president and CEO of Scholarship America, the nation’s largest nonprofit scholarship and education support organization. “Fortunately, there are some ways you can avoid getting duped.” To help you spot scams, Scholarship America offers the following insights. Fees and Other Red Flags Scholarship programs charging a fee to apply often look legitimate. But look at the bigger picture: if the provider is awarding $500 in scholarships and collecting fees from thousands of applicants, it’s not funding education so much as making money. Your chances of earning a scholarship are slight if not impossible -- sham providers often collect fees and disappear. Some providers claim to have a nostrings-attached grant or an incredibly lowinterest loan to offer, as long as you pay a tax or “redemption” fee in advance. Others offer to match you with guaranteed scholarships -- if you pay for a premium search service. Keep in mind, there’s no such thing as a “guaranteed scholarship.”

EDUCATION How to Recognize and Avoid College Scholarship Scams (StatePoint) Average college costs have doubled in the last two decades, and this financial pressure along with new technologies makes today’s students particularly
Free, comprehensive scholarship searching and matching services like Fastweb and Cappex will connect you to legitimate, competitive scholarships that don’t charge application fees. Too Good to Be True Be wary of the “too-good-to-be-true” scam model: an official-sounding organization tells you about an incredible opportunity, offers you a coveted spot at a scholarship seminar, or just sends you a check with a note of congratulations, using messaging designed to get your adrenaline pumping and make you act fast. Remember, scholarship providers aren’t in the practice of sending funds out randomly; it’s likely the check will bounce, or you’ll be asked to send money back for “processing” or an “accidental” overpayment. Your safest bet? Tearing up the check and, if you have time, filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Often unexpected “opportunities” are attempts to get you to divulge personal information. Even clicking on links can expose your data to scammers. Be cautious: Google the name of the scholarship or organization. Scams have often been flagged by the FTC or Better Business Bureau. Social Scammers A new scam making the rounds starts with a random friend request on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. Accept, and your new friend will start messaging you about a foolproof way to make money for college: they work for a scholarship provider and have found a loophole. They just need to enter you as a winner and you can split the money. If this was real, it’d be incredibly unethical. However, in the midst of stress, you may be tempted -- and that could cost more than money. While you may be asked to send cash as an advance, most such scammers are phishing. Give them enough info, and you’ll be worrying about getting your identity back. For more scholarship tools, resources and opportunities, including the annual Scholarship America Dream Award, please visit scholarshipamerica.org. “Scholarship scams seem to work just enough for people to keep trying it,” says Ballard. “However, two main rules will help you avoid them: never pay to apply and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” PHOTO SOURCE: (c) Burst __________________________________
