Chicago, Ill. -- Families and individuals hoping to increase their savings, launch a business or make smart financial choices received actionable advice on how to create and pass on generational wealth at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago’s 2nd Annual WealthNOW Conference last Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Malcolm X Community College. Once a teenger using street-smarts to sell cannabis, Mensa is now launching the first black-owned and equity focused cannabis company, 93 Boyz.

A new initiative from the YWCA’s Small Business Development Center provided aspiring female entre preneurs with valuable information on how to start their own home childcare centers. Additional presentations focused on ways to reduce the racial wealth gap through entrepreneurship, funding and franchise ownership.

AMA FURTHERS COMMITMENT TO AD VANCING HEALTH EQUITY ON CHICAGO’S WEST SIDE WITH $3M INVESTMENT

CHICAGO – The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced a new $3 million multi-year investment in Chicago’s west side neighborhoods. This investment leverages AMA’s new commitment as an anchor mission partner with West Side United (WSU)—adding to a group of collaborators committed to addressing structural inequities, eliminating health disparities and improving economic vitality and educa tional opportunities in Chicago’s west side communities, which have been devastated by decades of neglect and disinvestment.

The announcement, hosted by the City Club of Chicago at The Hatchery on Chicago’s west side, builds on the AMA’s initial $2 million investment in 2020. The new funding announced today will support WSU’s multi-pronged social impact investing approach. WSU-coordinated impact investing is done in partner ship with community development financial institutions (CDFIs) to help provide much-needed capital to foster economic opportunity, revitalize neighborhoods and support community transformation. AMA’s renewed commitments will lead to more investments in affordable housing, healthy food options, job creation projects and educational programs.

To date, West Side United partners have invested a combined $177 million in Chicago’s west side neighbor hoods through local procurement, small business grants, and impact investing, including the AMA’s 5-year, $5 million investment.

Formed in 2017, West Side United’s mission is to improve social, economic, and structural determinants of health, particularly through improving access to care and community resources, improving mental and behavioral health, and preventing and reducing chronic disease. More specifically, West Side United’s primary goal is to reduce the life expectancy gap between Chicago’s Loop and 10 west side neighborhoods, especially considering the decrease in life expectancy across the nation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social Change’s ChangeFest brings global issues to the forefront

At the time, polarization was an issue in communities, and there was a lack of understanding of people from differ ent communities who weren’t living in the same space.

ChangeFest, also known as the International Social Change Film Festival, was launched. It was a way to bring people together from all over the world, create a community and mobilize them around issues being talked about in the films, as well as existing movements, to bring about change.

This is the 11th year for the International Social Change Film Festival. Throughout the years, the film festival has showcased the work of artists, filmmakers and activists all over the world. It has also provided opportunities for people who have expertise or are directly impacted by the issues in the films that are shown. Those people have the opportunity to showcase their expertise and lead talkback sessions. More than 500 films have been shown during the film festival.

“There’s a lot of incredible filmmakers, storytellers, who are out here not only experiencing immense, incredible hardship and trauma, but also absolutely life-saving, trans formative triumph. What are we doing to capture that? What are we doing to share that? Sharing our joys, our love for things that aren’t being shared in the media,” Belcore said.

In 2015-2016, Social Change decided more should be done to ensure organizations that were already providing resources on the frontlines, had the additional capacity to go from direct services to systemic reform.

“I can be distributing food every day, but until I actual ly address the reason why so many people in our community need food and are in line for food in the first place, we are helping, but we’re not really eradicating, we’re not disman tling,” Belcore said.

Social Change began to work on the advocacy aspect, to ensure it was fighting to remove barriers to justice, freedom and opportunity. It has passed more than 30 pieces of legislation across the United States that have increased the access to justice, reformed sentencing, provided viable mechanisms for people to get education while in prison,

reformed bail, expanded remedies like ceiling expungement, and reform how police interact with people in their commu nities.

Social Change is directly responsive to the needs of people in the community. It has garnered the trust of the community by holding pop-up Farmers Markets, as well as pop-up legal and health clinics, and ceiling expungement workshops.

Because the need is great nationwide, Social Change has been asked by stakeholders in other cities, which in clude Baton Rouge, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Indi anapolis and St. Louis. Social Change is not just supporting movements on the ground in eight states, but also providing trainings to engage in a level of advocacy to address the root causes of the tremendous needs the community feels so acutely.

While Social Change trains activists and advocates, Belcore also teaches people how to do that work in a formal capacity at law schools. He does mediations, as well as represents people.

“It’s not just about disrupting the system and changing it, it’s about making sure it’s felt on the ground in our com munities,” he said.

Belcore recognizes the responsibility of that comes with the opportunities his mother has garnered for him, and he’s just doing everything he can to make sure he yields real fruit for the community.

Belcore acknowledges that when people are on the frontlines for change, it can be tiring and people need as much love, support, encouragement and wisdom as they can get.

Belcore credited the people who led the film selection committee that did the work to view, discuss and vote on the films. There are more than 150 films people can watch online now at changefest2022.eventive.org. There is a diversity of films available. Some of the films that standout are “Unguard ed,” “The Blue Cave” and “Engage Englewood.”

MAYOR LIGHTFOOT ISSUES RFI TO BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO — Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather recommendations and ideas for how to provide affordable, quality, and reliable internet service options that meet the needs of communities most burdened by the digital divide. Through the RFI, the City seeks ideas for increasing broadband ac cess and adoption in communities with low rates of internet adoption.

The City is particularly interested in hearing ideas on how to leverage its physical assets (such as light poles and rooftops) in this effort.

The intent of this initiative is to ensure people living in historically underinvested communities receive access to affordable, high-quality internet so they can fully participate in an increasingly digital world.

“Today marks an important milestone in our commitment to ensuring all Chicagoans have affordable, quality broadband options that work for them,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Through the Chicago Recovery Plan, I committed to expanding upon Chicago Connected and increasing broadband affordability and accessibility in commu nities. Now, I am thrilled to be collaborating with mission-aligned City departments and sister agencies to elicit innovative digital equity recommendations and bring this vision to life.”

Responses are encouraged from internet builders, operators, and investors, in addition to non-profits and philanthropic foundations interested in supporting innovative broadband connectivity solutions. The City also welcomes joint responses between private sector and non-profit organizations that identify creative ways for different sec

tors to solve for the shared goal of ending the digital divide.

Additionally, Chicago’s Digital Equity Council is currently seeking feedback from community members on their experience with internet, devices, and digital support through a survey, available here. Feedback from the survey will inform a citywide digital equity plan.

This RFI builds on the work of Chicago Connected, a firstof-its-kind broadband program which provides no-cost Internet to qualifying Chicago Public Schools (CPS) families for four years Chicago Connected has also made digital learning resources available to families for free, through partnerships with more than 20 commu nity-based organizations. In May 2022, Mayor Lightfoot launched the Chicago Digital Equity Council (DEC), a cross-sector, communi ty-driven effort to understand and overcome the nuanced barriers to digital equity by engaging those most burdened by digital inequities.

The City’s broadband consultant, the Broadband Equity Partner ship, advised the City on issuance of the RFI and will help analyze responses.

THE CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS (CHIARTS) INVITES PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS TO OPEN HOUSE EVENTS THIS FALL

CHICAGO – Chicago’s first public arts high school, The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts), located at 2714 W Au gusta Blvd., invites interested 8th grade students and their families to three open house “Backstage Pass” events.

ChiArts immersive Open Houses will give students, parents, and guardians a “Backstage Pass” to check out the campus, meet with department heads and teachers from different conservatories, learn about the admissions process, see student performances, learn how to successfully audition, and ask any questions they may have. Every Open House will also include an Academic and Admissions informa tional session for families to learn about courses and how to apply.

Instrumental Music & Voice Open House will take place on Tuesday, November 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Theatre & Dance will be on Wednesday, November 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Creative Writing & Visual Arts will be Wednesday, November 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Due to the high volume of demand, ChiArts asks that each student bring along with them no more than two guests to ensure that as many students and their families get an opportunity to attend. At ChiArts, students can study in one of five disciplines: music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and creative writing. ChiArts strongly encourages all student artists to attend the Open House events and apply, and is currently expanding admission in dance, vocal, and instrumental (particularly strings, brass, piano and woodwinds, among others) departments. Young artists attending ChiArts represent all 50 of Chicago’s wards, study ing with the city’s most motivated educators and professional teaching artists. All scholar-artists graduate with 2,500 hours of tuition-free arts training. ChiArts receives upwards of 4,000 yearly applications, an average of 1,500 yearly admission auditions and their average ac ceptance rate is between 160-170 scholar-artists.

CASTEN ANNOUNCES $2,250,129,111 HEADED TO ILLINOIS TO STRENGTHEN ROADS, BRIDG ES UNDER DEMOCRATS’ INFRASTRUCTURE LAW

October 13th, 2022 – Today, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) announced that Illinois will receive $2,250,129,111 from the historic Infrastructure Law to strengthen roads, bridges and tunnels across the state.

“The Infrastructure Law is delivering historic investments to build safer, stronger, smarter roadways,” said Rep. Casten. “This deeply needed funding for our roads, bridges and tunnels that Illinoisans rely on every day will slash commute times, lower car repair costs, reduce pollution and support good-paying, union jobs. Decades of underinvestment has left Illinois’ roads, bridges and tunnels in poor condition: causing longer commute times, higher car maintenance costs and more pollution in neighbor hoods. Nationwide, the United States ranks 13th globally in terms of the quality of our infrastructure, and the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the condition of our infrastructure a C-.

Applications for enrollment at ChiArts are now open and students can apply via GoCPS at www.cps. edu/GoCPS until December 2. The GoCPS application will provide each applicant with a sign-up for an audition slot and the option to audition in-person or virtually.

With equity being central to ChiArts’ mission, the school continues its unique model of admitting novice students and encourages those with no training in the arts but who demonstrate a strong natural ability and a desire for learning to apply.

Each year, more than 60% of students accepted to ChiArts are novices. As Chicago’s first and only public high school offering pre-professional arts training, the school seeks to remove tuition and other barriers that exist for Chica go’s youth and create a space for them to develop their talent, hone their skills, and thrive as creators, thinkers, and community members.

Students at ChiArts participate in a rigorous program, including five hours of academics, three hours of arts education, and one to four hours of practice or rehearsal per day. The academic curriculum provides students with a college preparatory education. ChiArts utilizes a research based multiyear curriculum in each discipline ensuring instructional sequencing across grade levels and alignment with Illinois State Standards and College Readiness Standards. ChiArts offers college prep, honors and advanced placement (AP) classes. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included the single larg est dedicated investment in surface transportation infrastructure since the construction of the Interstate Highway System: creating good-paying jobs while improving the safety and efficiency of our roadways.

The new funding for Illinois announced today comes from twelve initiatives under the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration for the upcoming fiscal year. Illinois’ allocation is part of a nearly $60 billion tranche from the Department of Transportation to support critical infrastructure in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each state and territory will have the flexibility to determine how these funds can best address longstanding needs.

Communities across the country are already feeling the transformative impact of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: The Bridge Formula Program has supported repairs on over 2,400 bridges.

The Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) Formula Program has funded over $200 million of projects in 21 states.

The Highway Safety Improvement Program supported improvements on more than 5,300 projects, including a total of 155 roundabout projects throughout the country that will reduce the number of traffic conflict points.

The National Highway Performance Program has funded more than 6,000 projects to improve safety and efficiency.

JOYCE EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF MANUFACTURING IN ILLINOIS

ESSEX – The “Makers on the Move” statewide bus tour put on by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association visited CSL Behring in Bradley last week, where State Senator Patrick Joyce spoke about the contributions of CSL to the community.

“Manufacturing has continued to have a significant impact to our state’s economy,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “The amount of jobs and revenue manufacturing brings to our region and state shows this is a major economic driver in Illinois.”

CSL Behring is a pharmaceutical manufacturer that is a global leader in creating products to cure rare and serious diseases. The company employs over 1,800 individuals in the area.

A recent study found the total economic impact of manu facturing in Illinois is estimated to be between $580 billion and $611 billion every year – the largest share of any industry to the state’s Gross Domestic Product. Manufacturing directly employs 662,298 workers but ultimately supports as many as 1,771,928 jobs, generating up to $150 billion in labor income for Illinois residents annually.

Modeling the Spirit of Democracy

Some things are unthinkable—until they happen.

For Jamie Raskin, a congressman and father, the first unthinkable thing was the loss of his beloved son Tommy to suicide on New Year’s Eve 2020. As a father myself, my heart breaks when I imagine the grief experienced by Raskin and his family.

The second unthinkable thing hap pened less than a week later. Enraged supporters of the defeated President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol and hunted for members of Congress to prevent them from affirming the results of the presidential election.

Raskin was at the Capitol that day— the day after his son was buried—to do his duty. And that meant he and the family members who were there to support him had to live through the terror of the attack and evacuation.

After all that, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked Raskin to lead an effort to impeach Trump for his role in the insur rection. Raskin said yes. He did a brilliant job. It was a remarkable show of strength and resilience. The House did vote to

impeach Trump for a second time, though most Senate Republicans refused to con vict him.

Raskin wrote a book about that 45day period between the loss of his son and the impeachment of Trump. “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy,” is powerful and surprisingly hopeful.

I recently had a chance to talk with Raskin when he spoke with People For the American Way’s new online book club. I asked him about the grounds for his hope. How, given the rising threats to freedom and democracy, does he continue to con sider himself a “constitutional optimist?”

What makes the U.S. exceptional is not that we are somehow immune to the erosion of democracy, he said. What makes us exceptional is the progress we have made together. We can take hope and strength from our own history, and the example of courageous people around the world.

“We are not the first generation to face authoritarianism.”

He reminded all of us that the spirit of freedom and democracy lives in people’s hearts even in the face of repression and attempts to snuff it out—and efforts by farright strategists to smother it.

Raskin has modeled that spirit of democracy as a member of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection and all that led up to it. In the face of every effort by Trump and his al lies to stall, stonewall, and shut down the investigation, Raskin and his colleagues refused to back down. They have dug out evidence and presented it to the Ameri can people.

Without the committee’s investiga tions, we would know far less about the effort by Trump and his henchmen to overturn the election. Without the com mittee’s truth-telling, there would be no hope for holding them accountable.

The threat to democracy is real. Con spiracy theories are helping drive a rightwing turn away from democratic values and toward repressive authoritarian rule.

At this moment, Americans face a choice: do we go back to the worst of the past, to voter suppression and political violence fueled by racism? Or do we move forward, building on the progress we have made in becoming a multiracial, multiethnic, multireligious democratic society?

It’s up to us. As Jamie Raskin reminded us, “Democracy is always unfinished.”

Jayce Baron and Hailie Sahar Kick-off Black Alphabet Film Festival with ‘Beyond Ed Buck’ Screening

9th Annual LGBTQ/SGL Visual Arts Festival Comes to Chicago Nov. 4-6

CHICAGO, Ill. – Black Alphabet, a nonprofit committed to promoting equity awareness on behalf of the Black LGBT+ community through the use of media and the arts, announced today the 9th Annual Black Alphabet Film Festival (BAFF) will kick off with the screening of Beyond Ed Buck on Saturday, Nov. 5. At the opening event, documentary filmmakers Jayce Baron and Hailie Sahar will join local leaders, including Dr. Keith Green, Executive Director of the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus and D’Ontace Keyes, Director of Communications at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) for a live, in-person Q&A.

One of the longest running Black LGBTQ/SGL film festivals in the world, the 9th Annual Black Alphabet Film Festi val will run from Nov. 4-6 at the Univer sity of Chicago’s Reva and David Logan Center and feature more than thirty films, including Black Beauty, I Wish I Never F*cking Met You, Rainbow Migrants, Manifold, The Funnel, and Jabari Dreams of Freedom. An opening reception hosted by comedian Otis Mack will be held on Fri., Nov. 4 at 6 PM, at Sip and Savor, 78 E 47th St., sponsored by Miller Coors.

Written, directed by, and starring Jayce Baron and Hailie Sahar (Pose), the documentary film Beyond Ed Buck fol lows the tragic murders that took place at the hands of political donor Edward Buck. The film expands the conversation of the history of Black trans and Black gay-iden tified men falling prey to the sexual fetishes and baiting of crystal meth that exist in America. These encounters often result in fatal endings for many innocent people living under the umbrella of being queer and Black in America. Filled with

real-life survivors, community leaders, and families who give heartfelt testimo nials, Beyond Ed Buck is a call-to-action meant to inspire change.

CHA Partners with Jonathan Rose Companies to Preserve Affordable Housing at Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments Development partner says unit preservation through CHA was critical

CHICAGO (Oct. 13, 2022) – The Chicago Housing Authority has part nered with Jonathan Rose Companies to preserve affordable housing at the Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments, a 272-unit development located on Chicago’s Near West Side. Rose’s preservation acquisition will secure affordable housing in a quick ly gentrifying community. The purchase of the property closed last month.

CHA will administer 164 tenant protection vouchers that were provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Eighty-two of those vouchers will be converted to a long-term Project Based Voucher (PBV) contract. There are an additional 108 units that receive rental assistance through a HUD-administered long-term contract.

CHA’s financial support will provide more than $32 million in rental assis tance to residents during the 15-year PBV contract. This project highlights the range of CHA’s investment in housing and communities over the past several years, which includes new buildings like the Lucy Gonzalez Parsons development in Logan Square as well as preservation projects such as Mattie Butler Apartments in Woodlawn.

“It’s important that CHA not only focus on building new housing, but also preserving affordable housing stock that’s already here,” CHA CEO Tracey Scott said. “CHA is actively looking for inno vative partnerships that allow families to stay in the communities they love.”

Karyntha Walsh, Senior Project Manager for Jonathan Rose Companies, worked closely with CHA throughout the process.

“CHA has been instrumental in the redevelopment of Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments,” Walsh said. “The new Project Based Voucher units through CHA are critical on two fronts: the rental assistance ensures long-term affordability

for rent-burdened families; and it also allows the team to leverage additional financing resources to fund the renovation work.”

Barbara Jean Wright Court Apart ments contains 12 four-story walk-up buildings and 15 townhomes. As part of the preservation effort, Jonathan Rose Companies will improve the building exteriors with new roofs, windows, tuckpointing, and HVAC. All apartments will receive new kitchens and bathrooms, flooring, and lighting. The company also plans to offer improved basketball courts and playground, updated landscaping, free Wi-Fi for tenants, and meeting rooms and administrative offices.

This is the first CHA PBV contract with Jonathan Rose Companies, a national owner, developer, and manager of over $1.8B of real estate specializing in the creation and management of affordable housing. The preservation of Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments represents an $85 million investment in affordable hous ing in Chicago. Additional funding sources include loan funds from the City of Chica go, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, and Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds.

American Expat Appears in Second Major Streaming Release

BANGKOK, PRNewswire -- Most would never think that moving to Southeast Asia as a black expat would yield unique entertainment opportunities but for Dezmon Landers that’s how the story has unfolded.

Landers moved to Thailand in 2016 to ex plore more of the world and establish a business presence in Asia Pacific. Since that time, he has been fortunate enough to participate in 2 major streaming releases for Netflix and Apple TV+.

He first caught the entertainment bug back in 2019 with his wife Maria. They hosted Thailand’s largest black casting party at The Entrepreneurship Center for Spike Lee’s Netflix classic Da 5 Bloods. The special event provided an opportunity for black and brown people from across the region to gain work in a high-profile movie production.

As Landers remarked, “The casting party was a great chance to help people of color in Thailand get small but meaningful acting roles and break into the industry. We’re very proud of the work we did in organizing the event and accomplishing that goal.”

During this time, Landers made many long-term friendships with those that worked in TV and film. One of those relationships provided him with the opportunity to play an extra in Zac Efron’s latest movie - The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

“I received a call from a good friend I met a few years ago,” Landers said. Her name came across my phone and all I could do was smile. I didn’t even know she’d be connecting us with

another opportunity.”

The role was to play a background soldier in the Vietnam War. Shooting took place in Chi ang Dao (Northern Thailand) and weather con ditions were quite challenging. Cast and crew alike fought through heat and torrential rain to ensure all necessary scenes were completed.

Next, Landers was asked if he’d like to work in Bangkok to further support the film, he graciously accepted.

Landers’ first day on set was mostly quiet. He was asked to stand by his phone and wait for a call when the crew was ready to have him film.

“It was great, the staff was amazing, food was abundant and I felt very supported. At the same time, I felt a bit confused and unworthy. Just a few days ago, I was in the background with a big community of battlemates. Then sud denly, I’m working with professionally trained actors. It was a good reminder that even if you’ve made progress in one industry, it doesn’t always transfer to another.”

Novel Clinical Trial Begins to Help Black and Latina Women Concerned About Chemotherapy-Induced Hair Loss

BRONX, N.Y., PRNews wire -- For many women of color, hair styles such as braids and Afros can represent an important link to their history, culture, and identity. Yet, there are no proven therapies to prevent hair loss for women with tightly curled or kinky hair undergoing cancer chemotherapy.

A clinical trial now kicking off at Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center (MECC) will test whether scalp cooling can protect Black and Latina women with textured hair types from hair loss due to chemotherapy, known as chemo therapy-induced alopecia (CIA). The trial will also determine which women are at high risk for permanently losing their hair due to CIA.

“For too long, science has failed to identify strategies for preventing hair loss in a diverse patient population despite the psy chological distress we know hair loss can cause,” said Beth N. Mc Lellan, M.D. director, Supportive Oncodermatology at Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center, chief of the division of dermatology at Montefiore Health System. “Our goal is to predict who is at high risk for persistent CIA and to see if we can modify existing scalp cooling techniques for Black and Latina women with ‘natural’ hair. We’re not only addressing a top quality of life concern, but also ensuring we are doing everything possible so that worry over hair loss won’t cause women to avoid what might be their most effective cancer treatment.”

CIA is one of the most common and distressing side effects of chemotherapy, affecting some 65% of people who undergo treatment. Chemotherapy attacks rapidly dividing cells—cancer cells as well as the skin’s hair follicles from which hair grows.

Scalp-cooling systems use “cold caps,” which are tight fitting helmet-like hats filled with a cold gel or liquid. By reducing blood flow to the scalp, the caps prevent chemotherapy drugs from reaching and destroying hair follicles and causes cells to divide at a slower rate. Cold caps are most effective when the cap is close to the scalp, which can be difficult to achieve when hair is thick or tightly curled compared to straight hair.

MECC’s study will enroll 30 women undergoing tax ane-based chemotherapy. The taxanes are a class of drugs that are often used as a “first-line” therapy for breast, lung, and gyneco logic cancers, which are among the most prevalent cancers in the

Bronx, where MECC is based. Taxanes are also associated with an eight-times higher risk of persistent, suboptimal hair growth six months after treatment compared to other chemotherapies. The commonly used taxanes are the drugs Paclitaxel (Taxol) and Docetaxel (Taxotere).

Participants will be assigned to one of two different study arms based on their preference. The participants who select the treatment arm will undergo scalp cooling after their hair is prepared with a deep conditioner and put into loose braids or twists. There will also be a control group in which the participants will receive no hair preparation or scalp cooling. The goal is to determine if using this specialized hair preparation technique, intended to reduce the volume of hair, improves scalp cooling efficacy and CIA pre vention in patients with textured hair. The investigators have partnered with a local hairstylist to perform onsite hair preparation and to assist women with styling.

To investigate cellular and genetic determinants of CIA, investigators will perform genomic sequencing on samples of plucked hairs, rather than traditionally used, more invasive skin biopsies, to identify possible biomarkers for CIA.

“We have a lot to learn to identify who is likely to perma nently lose their hair due to CIA,” said Dr. McLellan, who is also an associate professor of medicine at Einstein. “We look at gene expression and molecular markers to distinguish who is at risk for cancer recurrence and to tailor cancer treatments, why can’t we do the same for hair?”

This trial is being supported by Paxman, which is covering the cost of the cooling caps and machines, and is being funded by grants from Pfizer/Skin of Color Society and the American Academy of Dermatology.

Chicago Paramedics to Aid Community Health Centers in Medical Home Network Partnership

CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- A team of Chicago Fire Department Community Paramedics are piloting an innovative home visiting program focused on transforming care for patients who have chronic conditions or need extra help managing their health at home. The MHN Paramed ic Partnership, a pilot program funded by Medical Home Network (MHN), connects Chicago Fire Department Community Paramedics with patients who live on the South Side to bring preventive care to those with the greatest medical need and build healthier communities.

The first cohort of 12 community paramedics is making non-emergency field clinical assessments on South Side patients of Chicago Family Health Center, Friend Health and Sinai Medical Group.

The MHN Paramedic Partnership will swiftly connect patients with their care managers and primary care physi cians to address any issues.

Paramedics Take Wellness Checks to Deeper Level

In addition to their regular training as community

paramedics, MHN provides training that helps improve their understanding of how community health centers manage cases and coordinate care.

Paramedics put their training to work in field clinical assessments in under-resourced South Side neighborhoods. They follow up with patients after transitions of care such as a transport to an emergency department or following discharge from a hospital stay back to home.

Connecting with a patient’s medical home is central to the program, so paramed ics have an opportunity to provide an update to the primary care physician – especially for the those who have not seen a doctor or have chronic conditions.

During the pilot program, community paramedics will check on high-risk patients up to four times. They size up potential home health and safety hazards, answer patient questions about their conditions and treatments, check the medicines they currently take and help them follow treatment plans. In addition, they are in a unique position to assess if a patient has social determinants such as food

insecurity or transportation issues that are impacting physical health.

Community Health Centers Extend Reach of Safety Net MHN technology helps paramedics collaborate and connect with the community health centers. The secure MHNConnect care management platform gives them patient information, including access to the MHN Baseball Card summary of ED visits, inpatient stays and a care manage ment plan. Paramedics use MHN’s Community Connect software to confer with care teams at the primary care clinics. Care managers schedule medical appointments and reach out to providers who can address social determinants of health.

If the pilot is successful, MHN hopes to renew its year long funding and work with the city to expand the project to other regions served by Chicago EMS.

1. Find Community

The world of hiking gear, apparel and footwear is vast, which might be a bit confusing for those new to the outdoor experience. Look for brands that make things simple.
